Recently, we reported the discovery of a novel endoglucanase of the glycoside hydrolase family 12 (GH12), designated IfCelS12A, from the haloalkaliphilic anaerobic bacterium Iocasia fonsfrigidae strain SP3-1, which was isolated from a hypersaline pond in the Samut Sakhon province of Thailand (ca. 2017). IfCelS12A exhibits high substrate specificity on carboxymethyl cellulose and amorphous cellulose but low substrate specificity on b-1,3;1,4-glucan. Unlike some endoglucanases of the GH12 family, IfCelS12A does not exhibit hydrolytic activity on crystalline cellulose (i.e., Avicel™). High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) analyses of products resulting from IfCelS12-mediated hydrolysis indicate mode of action for this enzyme. Notably, IfCelS12A preferentially hydrolyzes cellotetraoses, cellopentaoses, and cellohexaoses with negligible activity on cellobiose or cellotriose. Kinetic analysis with cellopentaose and barely b-D-glucan as cellulosic substrates were conducted. On cellopentaose, IfCelS12A demonstrates a 16-fold increase in activity (KM = 0.27 mM; kcat = 0.36 s-1; kcat/KM = 1.34 mM-1 s-1) compared to the enzymatic hydrolysis of barley b-D-glucan (KM: 0.04 mM, kcat: 0.51 s-1, kcat/KM = 0.08 mM-1 s-1). Moreover, IfCelS12A enzymatic efficacy is stable in hypersaline sodium chlorids (NaCl) solutions (up to 10% NaCl). Specifically, IfCel12A retains notable activity after 24 h at 2M NaCl (10% saline solution). IfCelS12A used as a cocktail component with other cellulolytic enzymes and in conjunction with mobile sequestration platform technology offers additional options for deconstruction of ionic liquid-pretreated cellulosic feedstock. Salt (NaCl), is an essential nutrient for survival, while excessive salt can be detrimental. In the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, internal taste organs in the pharynx are critical gatekeepers impacting the decision to accept or reject a food. Currently, our understanding of the mechanism through which pharyngeal gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs) sense high salt are rudimentary. Here, we found that a member of the ionotropic receptor family, Ir60b, is expressed exclusively in a pair of GRNs activated by high salt. Using a two-way choice assay (DrosoX) to measure ingestion volume, we demonstrate that IR60b and two co-receptors IR25a and IR76b are required to prevent high salt consumption. Mutants lacking external taste organs but retaining the internal taste organs in the pharynx exhibit much higher salt avoidance than flies with all taste organs but missing the three IRs. Our findings highlight the vital role for IRs in a pharyngeal GRN to control ingestion of high salt.

Iodized salt serves as an effective intervention strategy, combating iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) and promoting overall health. This study aimed to assess the household salt consumption status and its relationship with urinary iodine (UI) levels among school-aged children. This is a descriptive-cross-sectional study that was selected by cluster-random sampling from 5 girls' schools (182) and 5 boys' schools (169), with a total of 351 primary school students (8–10 years old) of Darab. To explore the relationship between independent variables and dependent variable, urinary iodine (UI) levels, linear regression model was applied. A significance level of 0.05 was adopted for all analyses. The median UI level was 138 µg/L (IQR = 111). Our findings revealed that 66% of used iodized salt. A significant majority of participants properly stored their salt in containers with lids. Nearly half of the students in Darab have insufficient iodine intake. Despite controlling for the effect of iodized foods consumption, no significant association (P-value = 0.693) was observed between the storage method and iodized foods. Our study showed that students do not receive enough iodine or have received more than the required amount of iodine. Marine clays are soft clays with low shear strength and high compressibility. These soils are prone to seawater intrusion, due to which their engineering properties may be altered. Therefore, the effect of salinity on engineering properties of marine clay has to be investigated prior to any engineering activity in those areas. In this paper, an attempt has been made to study the effect of salinity on various geotechnical properties of Cochin marine clay. As sodium chloride is the most abundant mineral salt in seawater, the effect of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, 3% and 4% sodium chloride on marine clay for different curing periods were studied. The results of the study show that liquid limit decreases whereas the strength and compressibility characteristics improve as the concentration of salinity increases. Leaching, however, reverses these improvements, amplifying compressibility by 30% and decreasing pre-consolidation pressure by almost 50%. ITherefore, prior to design of any foundation structures on coastal areas prone to salt water intrusion, the behaviour of clay with variation in salinity should be investigated. Background: Despite global efforts to promote universal salt iodization, iodine deficiency remains a public health issue in developing countries. Objectives: This study assessed the proportion and sociodemographic characteristics of households consuming adequately iodized salt in 49 low- and middle-income countries. Methods: Data from DHS surveys of 49 low- and middle-income countries (2005–2021) were used to analyze household iodized salt prevalence. R version 4.0 was employed for statistical analyses. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted to estimate overall and regional prevalence. Results: We found that 83.4% of households consume adequately iodized salt, although with high heterogeneity (I2 = 100.0%). The East Asia and Pacific and the Europe and Central Asia regions showed high consumption rates of 87.6% and 87.7%, respectively, while Latin America and the Caribbean presented a significantly lower proportion of 30.8%. Conclusions: The study highlights the need for enhanced public health strategies to increase iodized salt consumption, especially in low-income and rural households. Addressing disparities in access, education, and affordability is crucial for improving iodine intake and preventing deficiency disorders, particularly among vulnerable populations like children and pregnant women. This study reports on newly acquired density data of synthetically prepared pure and mixed NaCl and CaCl2 aqueous solutions that span a wide range of geothermally encountered concentrations and mixing ratios. The analytical data are provided for the temperature range of 293–353 K at ambient pressure. For the reproduction of that data, PHREESCALE was used. The predictive potential of this numerical tool regarding the density of geothermal fluids of known composition was the major target herein. As a result, the measured data are in good agreement with previous analytical studies found in the literature. Possible sources of errors are discussed in this paper. Density data of the mixed solutions at temperatures other than ambient are unique and close existing data gaps. The numerical model reproduces the newly measured and already existing density data within an error band of approximately 1%. For further use in geothermal applications, this can be considered an excellent agreement. Moreover, the model yields a direct calculation of density without the need to establish complex empirical equations of state and mixing rules. Finally, sensitivity calculations performed with a thermal–hydraulic (TH) numerical reservoir model demonstrate the required accuracy of fluid density for reliably predicting the long-term performance of deep geothermal energy systems. In terms of the productivity index and the timing of thermal breakthrough it shows that the present analytical and numerical uncertainty in density is small enough to reliably state both reservoir parameters. The objective of the study was to assess the efficacy of monoammonium glutamate (MAG) in reducing the sodium chloride (NaCl) content (CCRD) of food matrices, including shoestring potatoes, requeijão cheese, and beef burgers. To this end, a time intensity (TI) analysis, temporal dominance of sensations (TDSs), and acceptance tests were employed to evaluate the NaCl reduction in various food items. The TI analysis showed that all experimental units had a mean salty taste intensity that equaled or exceeded the control. The TDS profiles of shoestring potatoes and requeijão cheese and the control were similar. However, the requeijão cheese exhibited significantly lower acceptance than the controls. The food matrices influenced the potential use of MAG and the CCRD. The addition of 2% MAG to the formulation reduced the NaCl content by up to 50% in shoestring potatoes and 65% in beef burgers without compromising the temporal perception of a salty taste and sensory acceptance. In Europe, respiratory protective devices must be certified before they can be marketed. Among the parameters of interest, inward leakage (IL) characterizes the tightness between the face seal and the face, to verify that the device is well-designed. European standard EN 13274-1 (2001) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard ISO 16900-1 (2019) specify that IL should be measured using sodium chloride (NaCl) aerosol or sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas. For reusable masks made of nonporous materials, both test agents are considered equally acceptable. However, the few studies that have compared IL values measured with various aerosols and gases have come to divergent conclusions. This work then aimed to measure IL with the test agents recommended by the standards to determine whether they are really equivalent. Since krypton (Kr) is an interesting candidate for replacing SF6 in standard tests, IL was assessed with SF6 and Kr simultaneously, and with NaCl aerosol using various calculation methods. Tests were carried out on 5 models of full-face masks donned on a headform connected to a breathing machine simulating 3 sinusoidal breathing rates of various intensities. The respirator fit on the headform was evaluated using a controlled negative pressure method to determine a manikin fit factor. Four scenarios were then tested to represent very poor, bad, good, and excellent fit. Gas concentration was measured using a mass spectrometer, and IL was calculated for SF6 and Kr. A combination of 3 devices allowed the determination of the number-based concentration of particles with diameters between 20 nm and 2 µm, and IL was calculated for each of the 33 channels, as well as using a cumulative number concentration. In addition, to comply with standards, a conversion was carried out to calculate IL using a cumulative mass concentration. The results of this work evidenced that the IL values measured with NaCl were systematically lower than those determined with gases. IL was also shown to vary with particle size, with a maximum value exceeding that calculated with cumulative concentrations (in number or mass). As part of the revision of the standards, protocols for measuring inward leakage should be redefined. On the one hand, acceptability thresholds should be re-evaluated according to the nature of the test agent (gas or aerosol), as it is clear that the 2 options do not give the same results for a given configuration. On the other hand, the aerosol leakage measurement protocol needs to be reworked to enable the measurement of a well-defined, robust, and reproducible inward leakage value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Roadside habitat has been touted as a conservation opportunity for insect pollinators, including the declining monarch butterfly. The spectacular monarch migration is under threat from the loss of habitat and the decline of their milkweed host plants. In the northern part of their range, roadsides could potentially produce millions of monarchs annually due to high densities of milkweed; however, roadside milkweed can accumulate chemicals from roads, such as sodium from road salt. Controlled lab studies have shown mixed effects of sodium on monarch development: small increases can be beneficial as sodium is an important micronutrient in brain and muscle development, but large increases can sometimes decrease survival. It is unclear how dietary sodium affects performance in ecologically relevant conditions and the migration itself. In this experiment, we raised monarchs outdoors, in migration‐inducing conditions, on milkweed sprayed with three levels of sodium chloride. We released 2464 tagged monarchs and held an additional 246 for further lab assays. While our recovery rates to the wintering grounds were low (N = 7 individuals), individuals from all three sodium chloride treatments made it to Mexico. Butterflies reared on control milkweed and low salt concentrated sodium in their tissues, while those on high salt diets excreted sodium, suggesting high salt levels were above a physiological optimum. There were no effects of treatment on wing coloration, survival, body size, immunity, or parasite prevalence. Taken together, our results suggest that monarchs are robust to levels of sodium in milkweeds found along roadsides, which is promising with respect to the toxicity of roadside plants. Hyponatremia is the most common clinical electrolyte disorder. Chronic hyponatremia has been recently reported to be associated with falls, fracture, osteoporosis, neurocognitive impairment, and mental manifestations. In the treatment of chronic hyponatremia, overly rapid correction of hyponatremia can cause osmotic demyelination syndrome (ODS), a central demyelinating disease that is also associated with neurological morbidity and mortality. Using a rat model, we have previously shown that microglia play a critical role in the pathogenesis of ODS. However, the direct effect of rapid correction of hyponatremia on microglia is unknown. Furthermore, the effect of chronic hyponatremia on microglia remains elusive. Using microglial cell lines BV-2 and 6-3, we show here that low extracellular sodium concentrations (36 mmol/L decrease; LS) suppress Nos2 mRNA expression and nitric oxide (NO) production of microglia. On rapid correction of low sodium concentrations, NO production was significantly increased in both cells, suggesting that acute correction of hyponatremia partly directly contributes to increased Nos2 mRNA expression and NO release in ODS pathophysiology. LS also suppressed expression and nuclear translocation of nuclear factor of activated T cells-5 (NFAT5), a transcription factor that regulates the expression of genes involved in osmotic stress. Furthermore, overexpression of NFAT5 significantly increased Nos2 mRNA expression and NO production in BV-2 cells. Expressions of Nos2 and Nfat5 mRNA were also modulated in microglia isolated from cerebral cortex in chronic hyponatremia model mice. These data indicate that LS modulates microglial NO production dependent on NFAT5 and suggest that microglia contribute to hyponatremia-induced neuronal dysfunctions. Context: Germination and seedling growth are critical stages in the establishment of a species under adverse environmental conditions. Parkinsonia praecox is a species that can establish in soils with high salt concentrations and water deficit conditions. Aims: This study focused on the germination and early growth responses of P. praecox seeds exposed to different salinity and water deficit treatments, to understand its distribution and its potential to persist in stressful environments. Methods: P. praecox seeds were exposed to solutions containing NaCl (for salinity) and polyethylene glycol (PEG; for water deficit) at a range of potentials −0.4, −0.8, −1.2, −1.5 and −1.9 MPa, and germination and early growth responses were evaluated. Controls were exposed to distilled water treatments (0 MPa). Key results: The highest germination was obtained in the distilled water treatment, whereas drought imposed by PEG and salinity caused a decrease in the percentage and speed of germination. Seed germination significantly decreased at 1.2 MPa in the saline treatments but at −0.8 MPa in PEG solutions. However, at −1.2 MPa and higher, the germination rate was higher in PEG-treated seedlings compared to those exposed to NaCl. Considerable early seedling growth was observed in low potentials and high saline conditions. Conclusions: The effects of salinity and drought on germination and early growth response of P. praecox contributes to the species' restricted distribution in arid and saline regions. Implications: These findings advance our knowledge of P. praecox responses under stressful conditions, highlighting this woody species' potential as a candidate in the rehabilitation of degraded environments. This study explored how Parkinsonia praecox responds to salinity and drought during germination and early growth. It found that germination was highest in distilled water but decreased with increased salinity and drought. Germination was more sensitive to drought than to salinity. Interestingly, seeds exposed to drought had better germination rates beyond −1.2 MPa compared to salt-treated seeds. Primary alcohols 2(a–h) and o‐aminobenzamides 1(a–h) can be selectively oxidized electrochemically to yield dihydroquinazolinone 4(a–h) and quinazolinones 5(a–h) in an efficient and chemoselective manner. This methodology employs sodium chloride (NaCl) 3(a) as a co‐catalyst and electricity as the oxidizing agent, utilizing cost‐effective and commercially available materials such as Graphite anode, Iron (Fe) cathode, and isopropyl alcohol (iPrOH) as a solvent and weak base. The synthesis yields various quinazolinone derivatives with diverse structural characteristics in good quantities, showcasing the method's broad applicability. This approach facilitates the production of a range of dihydroquinazolinones and quinazolinones (24 examples), highlighting its versatility and compatibility with different functional groups. Introduction Non-compressible torso hemorrhagic (NCTH) shock is the leading cause of potentially survivable trauma on the battlefield. New hypotensive drug therapies are urgently required to resuscitate and protect the heart and brain following NCTH. Our aim was to examine the strengths and limitations of permissive hypotension and discuss the development of small-volume adenosine, lidocaine, and Mg2+ (ALM) fluid resuscitation in rats and pigs. Materials and Methods For review of permissive hypotension, a literature search was performed from inception up to November 2023 using PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases, with inclusion of animal studies, clinical trials and reviews with military and clinical relevance. For the preclinical study, adult female pigs underwent laparoscopic liver resection. After 30 minutes of bleeding, animals were resuscitated with 4 mL/kg 3% NaCl ± ALM bolus followed 60 minutes later with 4 h 3 mL/kg/h 0.9% NaCl ± ALM drip (n  = 10 per group), then blood transfusion. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) and cardiac output (CO) were continuously measured via a left ventricular pressure catheter and pulmonary artery catheter, respectively. Systemic vascular resistance (SVR) was calculated using the formula: 80 × (MAP − CVP)/CI. Oxygen delivery was calculated as the product of CO and arterial oxygen content. Results Targeting a MAP of ∼50 mmHg can be harmful or beneficial, depending on how CO and SVR are regulated. A theoretical example shows that for the same MAP of 50 mmHg, a higher CO and lower SVR can lead to a nearly 2-fold increase in O2 supply. We further show that in animal models of NCTH, 3% NaCl ALM bolus and 0.9% NaCl ALM drip induce a hypotensive, high flow, vasodilatory state with maintained tissue O2 supply and neuroprotection. ALM therapy increases survival by resuscitating the heart, reducing internal bleeding by correcting coagulopathy, and decreasing secondary injury. Conclusions In rat and pig models of NCTH, small-volume ALM therapy resuscitates at hypotensive pressures by increasing CO and reducing SVR. This strategy is associated with heart and brain protection and maintained tissue O2 delivery. Translational studies are required to determine reproducibility and optimal component dosing. A differential thermal analysis study was carried out on the formation and decomposition of hydrates in systems containing natural gas, sand, and 5 mass % aqueous NaHCO3 as well as natural gas, sand, and 5 mass % aqueous NaCl with initial gas pressures from 3 to 9 MPa. Equilibrium conditions, enthalpy of dissociation, and the kinetic parameters of hydrate formation were determined. Hydrate formation in the system containing aqueous sodium bicarbonate proceeds at higher temperatures and lower pressures and has higher kinetic parameters than in the system with aqueous sodium chloride of the same concentration. Composition of the solutions is one of the factors affecting hydrate formation in the studied systems. The HCO3– ion is found to have a greater structure-making effect than the Cl– ion, which leads to differences in the thermodynamic conditions and kinetic parameters of natural gas hydrate formation in a porous medium. Common salt, also known as sodium chloride, is widely distributed on earth, especially in the form of seawater, which is an inexhaustible source. Common salt is economical and an excellent supplier of balanced nutrients, viz., sodium, iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, etc., and even trace elements. Today majority of the farmlands are being depleted of minerals because of unwanted agricultural practices. Therefore, the soil has to be made fertile by the addition of nutrients in the form of different fertilizers. The organic mixture is the humus fraction, which improves soil structure and texture. One of the important sources for the synthesis of such fertilizers is the bittern, which is an unavoidable toxic material being let off from solar salt pans after crystallizing common salt. The electropolishing behavior of pure magnesium and its alloys in ethylene glycol (EG), diethylene glycol (DEG), triethylene glycol (TrEG), and tetraethylene glycol (TeEG) solutions containing sodium chloride was investigated using electrochemical measurements, microscopic observations, and reflectance measurements. Large light-grayish cloudy areas with micrometer-scale linear irregularities were formed on the magnesium surface via constant-voltage electrolysis in the EG solution, whereas mirror-finished magnesium surfaces were successfully obtained in the DEG and TeEG solutions. Among these, the DEG solution is considered appropriate for electropolishing because of its lower viscosity and market price. The reflectance of the entire visible wavelength region gradually increased with time during electrolysis in the DEG solution at 308 K. We found that short-term electrolysis for 3 min at the higher voltage of 75 V should be selected if a moderately polished surface is to be rapidly obtained, whereas long-term electrolysis for 60–300 min at 50 V should be performed if a highly polished surface with an extremely high reflectivity measuring more than 80% can be obtained. Three-dimensional magnesium specimens with curved and spiral shapes and an LZ91 magnesium alloy consisting of a simple solid-solution matrix can also be electropolished via electrolysis in a DEG solution. • Normal saline has been considered to have deleterious effects on kidney function. • We compared balanced solution versus saline in off-pump coronary bypass surgery. • The study did not demonstrate a significant difference in acute kidney injury. To determine whether balanced solutions can reduce the incidence of acute kidney injury after off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery compared with saline. Randomized controlled trial. Single tertiary care center. Patients who underwent off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery between June 2014 and July 2020. Balanced solution-based chloride-restrictive intravenous fluid strategy. The primary outcome was acute kidney injury within 7 postoperative days, as defined by the 2012 Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes Clinical Practice Guideline. The incidence of acute kidney injury was 4.4% (8/180) in the balanced group and 7.3% (13/178) in the saline group. The difference was not statistically significant (risk difference, −2.86%; 95% confidence interval [CI], −7.72% to 2.01%; risk ratio, 0.61, 95% CI, 0.26 to 1.43; p = 0.35). Compared with the balanced group, the saline group had higher levels of intraoperative serum chloride and lower base excess, which resulted in a lower pH. In patients undergoing off-pump bypass surgery with a normal estimated glomerular filtration rate, the intraoperative balanced solution-based chloride-restrictive intravenous fluid administration strategy did not decrease the rate of postoperative acute kidney injury compared with the saline-based chloride-liberal intravenous fluid administration strategy. The pozzolanic reaction of fly ashes with calcium-based additives can be effectively used to solidify and chemically stabilize (S&S process) highly concentrated brines inside a cementitious matrix. However, complex interactions between the fly ash, the additive, and the brine typically affect the phases formed at equilibrium, and the resulting solid capacity to successfully encapsulate the brine and its contaminants. Here, the performances of two types of fly ash (a Class C and Class F fly ash) are assessed when combined with different additives (two types of cement, or lime with and without NaAlO2), and two types of brine (NaCl or CaCl2) over a range of concentrations (0 ≤ [Cl-] ≤ 2 M). The best performing matrices - i.e., the matrices with the highest Cl-containing phases content - were identified using XRD and TGA. The experimental results were then combined with thermodynamic modeling to dissociate the contribution of the fly ash from that of the additives. All results were implemented in a machine learning model that showed good accuracy at predicting the fly ash degree of reaction, allowing for the robust prediction of extended systems performance when combined with thermodynamic modeling.

Summary: To conform to the trend of whole‐food diets in recent years, whole potato powder has been used for the processing of extruded vermicelli. The effects of different additives, such as NaCl, citric acid and ethanol, on the cooking quality and sensory quality of whole potato vermicelli obtained via twin‐screw extrusion were investigated. The colour, gelatinisation properties, water absorption, cooking loss, texture profile analysis, scanning electron microscopy analysis and correlation analysis of the whole potato vermicelli were determined and discussed. The brightness of the whole potato vermicelli increased from 52.0 to 55.4 at 1% NaCl addition and increased from 52.0 to 54.9 at 0.8% citric acid addition, and the water absorption of the whole potato vermicelli increased from 83.1% to 159.1% at 0.4% citric acid addition and increased from 83.1% to 258.9% at 8% ethanol addition. The cooking loss of the whole potato vermicelli decreased from 5.3% to 5.1% at 8% ethanol addition, indicating that ethanol could improve the cooking quality of whole potato vermicelli. The texture properties of the whole potato vermicelli decreased with the addition of ethanol, and the ΔH of the whole potato vermicelli decreased from 3.7 to 1.8 J g−1 at 0.8% citric acid addition and decreased from 3.7 to 1.5 J g−1 at 8% ethanol addition, respectively. Moreover, the addition of ethanol was negatively correlated with the max force, break distance, stretching work, hardness, adhesiveness and chewiness of the whole potato vermicelli. The addition of NaCl was positively correlated with the peak gelatinisation temperature. All three additives affected the microstructure of the whole potato vermicelli, including roughening the cross section and increasing the number of pores. In this study, NaCl improved the gelatinisation properties of whole potato vermicelli, citric acid and ethanol improved the water absorption of the whole potato vermicelli, and citric acid improved the anti‐browning effects of the whole potato vermicelli. Abstract Background Abiotic stress, such as salinity, affects the photosynthetic apparatus of plants. It is reported that the use of selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs), and biochemical compounds such as chitosan (CS) increase the tolerance of plants to stress conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the potential of Se NPs, CS, and their composite (CS + Se NPs) in improving the photosynthetic apparatus of C. sinensis under salt stress in greenhouse conditions. The grafted seedlings of C. sinensis cv. Valencia after adapting to the greenhouse condition, were imposed with 0, 50, and 100 mM NaCl. After two weeks, the plants were foliar sprayed with distilled water (control), CS (0.1% w/v), Se NPs (20 mg L− 1), and CS + Se NPs (10 and 20 mg L− 1). Three months after treatment, the levels of photosynthetic pigments, leaf gas exchange, and chlorophyll fluorescence in the treated plants were evaluated. Results Under salinity stress, total chlorophyll, carotenoid, and SPAD values decreased by 31%, 48%, and 28% respectively, and Fv/Fm also decreased compared to the control, while the ratio of absorption flux (ABS), dissipated energy flux (DI0) and maximal trapping rate of PSII (TR0) to RC (a measure of PSII apparent antenna size) were increased. Under moderate (50 mM NaCl) and intense (100 mM NaCl) salinity stress, the application of CS + Se NPs significantly increased the levels of photosynthetic pigments and the Fv/Fm value compared to plants treated with distilled water. Conclusions It may be inferred that foliar treatment with CS + Se NPs can sustain the photosynthetic ability of C. sinensis under salinity stress and minimize its deleterious effects on photosynthesis.

This is an article in the field of mineral materials. The utilization of desulfurized gypsum (FGD) to prepare more widely used hemihydrate gypsum plays a very important role in the resource utilization of industrial by-product gypsum. It can not only avoid the large-scale exploitation of natural gypsum, but also realize the resource utilization of desulfurized gypsum. In the process of converting FGD gypsum into hemihydrate gypsum, appropriate concentration of additive and sodium chloride were used as the reaction solution, and the process was heated and stirred under normal pressure. The effects of sodium chloride concentration, additive concentration, solid-liquid ratio, rotation speed and reaction temperature on the phase conversion time and crystal size of dihydrate to hemihydrate gypsum were studied. The increase of additive and sodium chloride concentration not only sped up the phase conversion process but also had a certain inhibitory effect on the average length and average aspect ratio of hemihydrate gypsum crystals. Higher or lower rotation speed hindered the nucleation and growth of hemihydrate gypsum crystals and affected the collision frequency of Ca2+ and SO42- in the NaCl added solution, thus delaying the formation of hemihydrate gypsum. Decreasing the solid-liquid ratio and increasing the temperature had a certain promoting effect on the phase conversion process. At a lower temperature, due to the insufficient driving force of the phase conversion process, it was difficult to transform FGD gypsum into hemihydrate gypsum. The optimal process conditions for preparing hemihydrate gypsum from FGD gypsum were determined as follows: sodium chloride concentration 10%, additive concentration 10%, solid-liquid ratio 1∶5, rotating speed 300 r/min, reaction temperature 100 ℃. Under the best process conditions, the reaction could be completed in 60 min. The average length of the prepared hemihydrate gypsum crystals was as high as 127 μm, and the average aspect ratio was as high as 19. At the same time, the relationship between the activity of water molecules in the solution, the degree of supersaturation and the reaction temperature was studied, and it was determined that the phase conversion process was determined by the temperature and the degree of supersaturation.

Purpose: The study aimed to explore the effects of biofertilizer inoculation on the growth and morphophysiological traits of Red Angel and Wonderful pomegranate cultivars under salinity stress. Research method: The experiment utilized a factorial design based on a completely randomized design with four replications to assess the effects of salinity stress at three levels (control, 4, and 8 dS/m) and biofertilizer at four levels (control, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Glomus mosseae, and P. fluorescens + G. mosseae) on pomegranate plantlets. Findings: The results showed that the highest percentage of symbiosis was observed in P. fluorescens + G. mosseae, with 89.16% and 90.55% in the Red Angel and Wonderful cultivars, respectively. Salinity did not have any influence on the percentage of symbiosis in both cultivars. Furthermore, the application of biofertilizers increased the stem diameter, number of lateral branches, total number of leaves, leaf fresh and dry weight, root diameter, number of lateral roots, and relative water content of leaves in both cultivars. Additionally, all biofertilizers reduced cell membrane injury at all salinity levels by approximately 40%. Salinity decreased the leaf fresh and dry weight, root fresh and dry weight, and number of lateral roots, while increasing cell membrane injury in both cultivars. Originality/Value: The results highlight the potential of biofertilizers in mitigating the adverse effects of salinity stress on pomegranates, particularly when P. fluorescens and G. mosseae are combined.

This work investigated in‐situ synthesis of porous silica‐nickel‐ruthenium composite catalysts for hydrolysis of ammonia borane. The precursors were prepared with an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), to form porous structure in the precursor particles, and the precursors was treated in aqueous solution including sodium borohydride and ammonia borane for in‐situ process to parallelly activate and use the catalysts for hydrolysis of ammonia borane. The result of TEM and nitrogen sorption measurements suggested that the primary particle size of the in‐situ synthesized catalysts decrease with increasing the amount of SDS and sodium chloride as the additive for controlling the primary particle size probably because of the effect of sodium ions to inhibit nuclei growth of the primary particles. From the EDS analyses, the composition of active nickel and ruthenium contents increased with increasing the amount of SDS and sodium chloride except for the highest amount of SDS probably because of adsorption of the metal cations with the excess amount of the surfactant anion to decrease the amount of the metal cations including the catalyst. The in‐situ synthesized catalyst including small size primary particles and high nickel and ruthenium content tended to exhibit high activity for hydrolysis of ammonia borane. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Salt-induced diffusiophoresis is the migration of a colloidal particle in water due to a directional salt concentration gradient. An important example of colloidal particles is represented by micelles, generated by surfactant self-assembly in water. For non-ionic surfactants containing polyethylene glycol (PEG) groups, PEG preferential hydration at the micelle–water interface is expected to drive micelle diffusiophoresis from high to low salt concentration. However, micelles are reversible supramolecular assemblies, with salts being able to promote a significant change in micelle size. This phenomenon complicates the description of diffusiophoresis. Specifically, it is not clear to what extent the salt-induced growth of micelles affects micelle diffusiophoresis. In this paper, a multiple-equilibrium model is developed for assessing the contribution of the micelle growth and preferential hydration mechanisms to the diffusiophoresis of non-ionic micelles. The available experimental data characterizing the effect of NaCl on Triton X-100 aggregation number are combined with data on diffusiophoresis and the preferential hydration of PEG chains to show that the contribution of the micelle growth mechanism to overall diffusiophoresis is small compared to that of preferential hydration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the phenotypic and genotypic responses of Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 19585 (ST) and Staphylococcus aureus KACC 13236 (SA) preadapted to sublethal concentrations of lactic acid (LA) and sodium chloride (NaCl) for 48 hr at 37°C, followed by re-exposure to lethal concentrations of LA and NaCl for 24 hr at 37°C. ST and SA treated in a sequential and ordered manner with LA and NaCl were assigned as LA-LA, LA-NaCl, NaCl-LA, and NaCl-NaCl. The treatments, LA-LA, LA-NaCl, NaCl-LA, and NaCl-NaCl, were evaluated by antimicrobial susceptibility, bacterial fluctuation, relative fitness, zeta potential, and gene expression. The MICt/MICc ratios of LA, NaCl, CIP, GEN, and TET against ST treated with LA-LA were 1.0 to 0.8, 0.8, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5, respectively. The MICt/MICc ratios of NaCl, CIP, GEN, and TET were between 0.5–0.8 for SA treated with LA-LA. ST treated with LA-LA and SA treated with LA-NaCl exhibited the highest coefficient of variance. The lowest relative fitness was observed at ST treated with LA-LA (0.5). ST and SA treated with LA-LA showed the lowest zeta potential. The transporter-, toxin–antitoxin system-, chaperone protein-, and SOS response-related genes were suppressed at ST and SA treated with LA-LA. The transporter-, toxin–antitoxin system-, and chaperone protein-related genes were overexpressed in SA treated with LA-NaCl, NaCl-LA, and NaCl-NaCl. A heat-resistant superalloy from destroyed special equipment was used for further processing to extract valuable metals such as rhenium, nickel, cobalt, tungsten, molybdenum, niobium, tantalum, and others. The need to develop an effective method for the electrochemical dissolution of this superalloy is due to the shortage and high cost of the component metals, especially rhenium. The electrochemical dissolution method is effective for the rapid and complete dissolution of such hard alloys, optimizing the extraction process of valuable components. In the course of the work, the composition of the unknown superalloy was determined, and the possible grade of the alloy was identified as JS32-VI. For the first time, a comparison of the anodic behavior of the heat-resistant superalloy containing rhenium in various electrolyte solutions, including methanesulfonic acid, was carried out. This comparison helped determine which electrolyte is best suited for dissolving the superalloy and extracting valuable metals from it. The results showed that solutions containing chloride ions (NaCl and HCl) are the most effective for the electrochemical dissolution of the superalloy. These results are explained by the fact that chloride ions help remove the passive oxide film from the metal surface. Thus, chloride solutions provide more effective dissolution of the superalloy compared to methanesulfonic acid and sulfuric acid. The key finding of the study is the identification of chloride solutions as the most effective for dissolving the superalloy, which optimizes the process of extracting valuable metals. Crystallization in supersaturated solution plays a fundamental role in a variety of natural and industrial processes. However, a thorough understanding of crystallization phenomena in supersaturated solution is still difficult because the real-time visualization of crystallization processes under supersaturated condition is a great challenge. Herein, an electron beam-induced crystallization method was carried out in in situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to visualize the crystallization of NaCl under supersaturated condition in real time. Crucial steps and behaviors in the crystallization of NaCl were captured and clarified, including the growth of NaCl nanocrystals with different morphologies, the formation of initial crystalline seeds from amorphous ion clusters, and the non-equilibrium growth behaviors caused by uneven distribution of precursor ions. This study provides the real-time visualization of detailed nucleation and growth behaviors in NaCl crystallization and brings an ideal strategy for investigating crystallization phenomena under supersaturated condition. Background. Phosphogypsum is a by-product of phosphoric acid production, the basis of phosphate fertilizers. Environmental problems of phosphogypsum waste are of concern, including due to the presence of radium-226 and heavy metals. Purpose. To study the effect of molar ratio on the conversion of sodium sulfate and potassium chloride obtained from phosphogypsum. Methodology. Sodium sulfate and potassium chloride solutions were mixed in a molar ratio of 1:4 and stirred at 50°C for 30 min ("MS-H280-Pro"). The temperature was maintained at 50°C. The SO₃ content was determined gravimetrically, K₂O and Na₂O - by flame photometry, Cl⁻ ions - by titrimetric method. The present article deals with the optimization of additives used to improve penetration resistance of Himalayan soil and designing the pavement thickness. Eggshell powder, polypropylene fiber and sodium chloride were used as additives in a fine-grained soil for improvement in soil properties as a subgrade material. Optimization of additives was done using Taguchi method and MINITAB 21 software was employed for the analytical analysis of the responses obtained from the laboratory tests. The test results showed that the additives have potential for improvement in penetration resistance of fine-grained soil by 2.26 and 2.0 times that of untreated soil under unsoaked and soaked conditions respectively leading to considerable reduction in pavement thickness. The correlations given by the US Army Corps of Engineers and Indian Road Congress were used for determining the pavement thickness. Pavement thickness offered by US Army Corps of Engineers method is less and misleading to consider for pavement construction, whereas Indian Road Congress method has proved far better by offering rational lateral dimension for designing Indian rural hilly roads. Background: While dietary salt intake has been linked with gastric cancer risk in Asian studies, findings from Western populations are sparse and limited to case—control studies. Our aim was to evaluate the frequency of adding salt to food at table in relation to gastric cancer risk among UK adults. Methods: We evaluated associations between the frequency of adding salt to food and the risk of gastric cancer in the UK Biobank (N = 471,144) using multivariable Cox regression. Frequency of adding salt to food was obtained from a touchscreen questionnaire completed at baseline (2006–2010). 24-h urinary sodium excretion was estimated using INTERSALT formulae. Cancer incidence was obtained by linkage to national cancer registries. Results: During a median follow-up period of 10.9 years, 640 gastric cancer cases were recorded. In multivariable models, the gastric cancer risk among participants reporting adding salt to food at table "always" compared to those who responded "never/rarely" was HR = 1.41 (95% CI: 1.04, 1.90). There was a positive linear association between estimated 24-h urinary sodium levels and the frequency of adding salt to food (p-trend <0.001). However, no significant association between estimated 24-h urinary sodium with gastric cancer was observed (HR = 1.19 (95% CI: 0.87, 1.61)). Conclusions: "Always adding salt to food" at table was associated with a higher gastric cancer risk in a large sample of UK adults. High frequency of adding salt to food at table can potentially serve as a useful indicator of salt intake for surveillance purposes and a basis for devising easy-to-understand public health messages. The use of ultrasound (us) for the determination of main component (NaCl) and main admixtures (CaCl2, MgCl2) of natural brine was investigated. The NaCl content was determined using us of ultrahigh frequency (10 to 25 MHz with the optimum at 20–22 MHz) and of 20 W·cm−2 intensity. The admixture concentrations were determined with the simultaneous application of us of ultrahigh (10–25 MHz) and low (18–23 kHz) frequencies at intensities of 20 and 1.3–1.5 W·cm−2, respectively. This approach reduced the lower determination boundary down to 0.1 g·dm−3, i.e., by a factor of 5. Fossil fuels that are used to generate electrical energy are running low. Besides that, energy generated from fossil fuels causes global warming and climate change due to gas emissions such as carbon dioxide, leading to a greenhouse effect. In addition, the development of small electronic devices has created power demands, from initially in milli watt (mW), to microwatt (W) level for wireless sensor networks, which generally use batteries as a power supply. Therefore, environmentally friendly and renewable materials like coconut shells are needed to generate electrical energy. This research aims to generate electrical energy from a model using coconut shell activated carbon with sodium chloride (NaCI) electrolyte. The electrical energy generation model is composed of counter electrode-electrode-counter electrode. The electrode used was coconut shell-activated carbon. Three counter electrodes were used: aluminum, zinc and copper plates. The electrolyte used was sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. The electrolyte was injected between the electrode and the counter electrode, and heat was applied. When the electrolyte was injected into the electrical energy generation model, interaction occurred between the ions from the electrolyte and the functional groups, the pores of the activated carbon, and the counter electrode, and then electrons were released. The research results show that the voltage produced due to an in- crease in temperature up to A7=54 °C, is 0.875 volts for aluminum, 0.767 volts for zinc and 0.091 volts for copper. The average ther- mal voltage sensitivity (dV/dT) for aluminum is 68.99297 mV/°C, while that for zinc is 61.34319 mV/°C, and copper is 7.02533 mV/°C. The currents produced by aluminum, zinc and copper are 5.9 µA, 3.8 μ.Α and 0.157 μ.Α, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: It is established that the immune system, namely T cells, plays a role in the development of hypertension and renal damage in male Dahl salt-sensitive (SS) rats, but far less is known about this relationship in females. Rats with genetically deleted T cells via CD247 gene mutation on the Dahl SS background (SSCD247−/−) were utilized to interrogate the effect of sex and T cells on salt sensitivity. METHODS: We assessed the hypertensive and kidney injury phenotypes in male versus female SS and SSCD247−/− rats challenged with 3 weeks of high salt (4. 0% NaCl). Differences in T cell activation genes were examined in renal T cells from male and female SS rats, and a sex-specific adoptive transfer was performed by injecting male or female splenocytes into either male or female SSCD247−/− recipients to determine the potential contribution of T cell sex. RESULTS: The lack of functional T cells in SSCD247−/− rats significantly reduced salt-induced hypertension and proteinuria in both sexes, although SSCD247−/− females exhibited greater protection from kidney damage. Adoptive transfer of either Dahl SS male or female splenocytes into SSCD247−/− male recipients exacerbated hypertension and proteinuria compared with controls, while in SSCD247−/− female recipients, exacerbation of disease occurred only upon transfer of male, but not female, SS splenocytes. CONCLUSIONS: The absence of T cells in the SSCD247−/− normalized sex differences in blood pressure, though sex differences in renal damage persisted. Sodium chloride in the fluid phase is important for the chemistry of natural hydrothermal processes in the Earth's crust and derived industrial utilizations, where thermodynamics is an essential part that can also to some extent fill in missing experimental data. The solubility of sodium chloride in crystalline form (halite) in water vapor is modeled using a novel combination of an accurate equation of state for pure water and a truncated virial equation for water mixed with sodium chloride. In the resulting Helmholtz energy expression, interactions between H 2 O and NaCl are incorporated through the second (B 12), third (C 112), and fourth (D 1112) cross virial coefficients. The temperature dependence of the coefficients has been determined by regression to experimental data. Specifically, the temperature dependence of B 12 is assumed to follow that of a square-well gas, whereas C 112 and D 1112 are calculated using purely exponential functions of inverse temperature. The temperature dependence of B 12 is supported by independent calculations of ab initio interaction energies between H 2 O and NaCl. For water itself, all terms in the virial equation are collectively modeled by the IAPWS-95 equation of state. For sodium chloride, interactions between two or more NaCl molecules are disregarded. The model shows quantitative agreement with available solubility data in the vapor–halite coexistence region, which implies that the water vapor density is approximately less than 130 kg m − 3 . Its theoretical basis ensures that predictions are reliable in regions where experimental data are missing. The direct calculation of cross virial coefficients is overall useful for modeling geochemical fluids with low solute concentrations, including systems with multiple solvents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The study aimed to explore the effects of biofertilizer inoculation on the growth and morphophysiological traits of Red Angel and Wonderful pomegranate cultivars under salinity stress. Research method: The experiment utilized a factorial design based on a completely randomized design with four replications to assess the effects of salinity stress at three levels (control, 4, and 8 dS/m) and biofertilizer at four levels (control, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Glomus mosseae, and P. fluorescens + G. mosseae) on pomegranate plantlets. Findings: The results showed that the highest percentage of symbiosis was observed in P. fluorescens + G. mosseae, with 89.16% and 90.55% in the Red Angel and Wonderful cultivars, respectively. Salinity did not have any influence on the percentage of symbiosis in both cultivars. Furthermore, the application of biofertilizers increased the stem diameter, number of lateral branches, total number of leaves, leaf fresh and dry weight, root diameter, number of lateral roots, and relative water content of leaves in both cultivars. Additionally, all biofertilizers reduced cell membrane injury at all salinity levels by approximately 40%. Salinity decreased the leaf fresh and dry weight, root fresh and dry weight, and number of lateral roots, while increasing cell membrane injury in both cultivars. Originality/Value: The results highlight the potential of biofertilizers in mitigating the adverse effects of salinity stress on pomegranates, particularly when P. fluorescens and G. mosseae are combined. ObjectivesCurrent literature is lacking a comprehensive review of data on dietary interventions in blood pressure (BP) management in sub-Saharan African countries. We assessed the association of dietary and other lifestyle interventions with BP-lowering effects in populations within sub-Saharan Africa.MethodsWe performed a systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis to determine the impact of dietary and lifestyle interventions on SBP and DBP in sub-Saharan Africa. We searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases. We included intervention studies that were randomized and nonrandomized conducted in Africans residing in sub-Saharan Africa investigating diet and other lifestyle, physical activity, weight loss, tobacco, and alcohol cessation modifications. We determined the effect of diet and other lifestyle interventions on SBP and DBP. We expressed effect size as weighted mean difference and 95% confidence interval (CI).Main results: We identified six studies with a total of 1412 individuals, 38% males, mean age of 52.8 years (SD = 11.5). Background: Potassium-enriched salt is a proven dietary intervention for reducing risk of stroke, cardiovascular disease, and premature mortality when used instead of regular table salt. Potassium-enriched salt products are available globally, but the on-pack health claims, product features, and instructions for use are diverse. Objectives: The objective of this study was to summarize the label features of potassium-enriched salt products available worldwide. Methods: A content analysis was conducted on the labels of potassium-enriched salt products available for sale in May 2023. Potassium-enriched salt products were identified through a systematic search of literature, major online shopping websites, and Google using similar keywords such as “salt substitute” or “low sodium salt.” Information on product labels was coded relating to health claims, product features, and instructions for use, and were quantitatively summarized. Results: A total of 117 potential potassium-enriched salt products were identified, with 83 included in the final analysis after excluding products containing no sodium (n = 15), no potassium (n = 5), or that were duplicates (n = 14). There were 23 (28%) products with on-pack claims for health benefits and 36 (43%) with health warnings. Twenty-five (30%) of product labels included descriptions of other product features such as taste and potassium content, and 36 (43%) had instructions for use. Conclusions: There was large variability in the label features of potassium-enriched salt products identified in this study. Most product labels made no health-related statements, but among those that did, warnings occurred more frequently than statements of health benefits. The diversity in labeling may cause confusion among consumers, and standardized, evidence-based labeling should be developed.

Abstract Roadside habitat has been touted as a conservation opportunity for insect pollinators, including the declining monarch butterfly. The spectacular monarch migration is under threat from the loss of habitat and the decline of their milkweed host plants. In the northern part of their range, roadsides could potentially produce millions of monarchs annually due to high densities of milkweed; however, roadside milkweed can accumulate chemicals from roads, such as sodium from road salt. Controlled lab studies have shown mixed effects of sodium on monarch development: small increases can be beneficial as sodium is an important micronutrient in brain and muscle development, but large increases can sometimes decrease survival. It is unclear how dietary sodium affects performance in ecologically relevant conditions and the migration itself. In this experiment, we raised monarchs outdoors, in migration‐inducing conditions, on milkweed sprayed with three levels of sodium chloride. We released 2464 tagged monarchs and held an additional 246 for further lab assays. While our recovery rates to the wintering grounds were low (N = 7 individuals), individuals from all three sodium chloride treatments made it to Mexico. Butterflies reared on control milkweed and low salt concentrated sodium in their tissues, while those on high salt diets excreted sodium, suggesting high salt levels were above a physiological optimum. There were no effects of treatment on wing coloration, survival, body size, immunity, or parasite prevalence. Taken together, our results suggest that monarchs are robust to levels of sodium in milkweeds found along roadsides, which is promising with respect to the toxicity of roadside plants.
