Straipsnyje nagrinėjamos Friedricho Nietzsche‘s pastangos adekvačiai įsisąmoninti Vakarų kultūrą ištikusią krizę ir tos krizės įveikimo būdų paieška. Nietzsche siūlo kultūrą traktuoti kaip apraišką to, ką jis vadina „gyvenimu“. Šia sąvoka jis įvardina tikrovės pradą, kurio struktūrai būdingas autoreferentinis pobūdis, iš dalies primenantis tiek Aristotelio noēseōs noēsis, tiek Descartes‘o cogito, tiek Hegelio „dvasią“. Tačiau Nietzsche puikiai supranta, kad „gyvenimas“ neišsitenka tradicinių mąstymo formų rėmuose ir kad būtent pastangos jį į tuos rėmus įsprausti ir yra kultūros krizės priežastis. Šis supratimas skatina ieškoti naujos mąstymo formos – rizikingo mąstymo. Bet rizika neatsiejama nuo nesėkmės galimybės ir, suvokdamas šitai, Nietzsche galiausiai priima jį ištikusią nesėkmę kaip nobilitaciją. The article examines the efforts of Friedrich Nietzsche to recognize the crisis of Western culture adequately and to find ways of overcoming of this crisis. Nietzsche proposes to consider culture as manifestations of what he calls “life”. With this word, he denotes a certain principle of reality, the structure of which is characterized by self-referentiality, suggestive of Aristotle’s noēseōs noēsis, Descartes’ cogito or Hegel’s “spirit”. However, Nietzsche is well aware that “life” goes beyond the framework of traditional forms of thinking, and that the attempts to squeeze it into this framework is the cause of the crisis of culture. This understanding pushes Nietzsche to search for a new form of thinking – risky thinking. However, risk is inseparable from possible failure. In recognizing this, Nietzsche ultimately accepts his failure as a nobilitation.

It is usually assumed that the main goal of seminars delivered between 1959 and 1969 by Martin Heidegger to the Swiss Psychotherapists in Zollikon were the philosopher’s attempt to make his own philosophy useful. According to Medard Boss, Heidegger’s “philosophical insights” can be useful insofar as they can serve as a theoretical basis of psychotherapeutic practice. But such an interpretation of Heideggerian philosophy could hardly be acceptable to Heidegger himself. One of the main features of Heideggerian thinking is the longing to return to the primordial θεωρία, i.e. to the knowledge as an aim in itself. Therefore, the relationship between Heidegger’s thought and Boss’ Daseinsanalysis can be understood as a kind of “war of the worlds” between psychotherapy that seeks to turn philosophy into a means of increasing the efficiency of the practice and philosophy that seeks to preserve the status of θεωρία. However this “war” belongs to another dimension too. “War” can be understood as πόλεμος mentioned in the 53rd fragment of Heraclitus, i.e. as a tragic action, through which the openness of being is accomplished. In the article this action is viewed through the prism of the confrontation of the two modes of attunement (Befindlichkeit), which Heidegger calls the “resoluteness” (Entschlossenheit) and “detachment” (Gelassenheit). These modes can be thought of as two emotional spaces, a confrontation of which Heidegger himself has experienced when he was treated by the psychotherapist Viktor von Gebsattel in 1946. In the fight between “resoluteness” and “detachment” the openness of being is accomplished. But in order to participate in this openness, it is necessary to hear it as call and to accept as challenge. Such call Heidegger hears first and foremost in the language of poetry. The proximity of poetry and philosophy he recognizes as a “ dangerous proximity”. But, according to Heidegger, this is the “ healing danger”, because exposing ourselves to it, we participate in the “war of the worlds”, in which the openness of being is accomplished. It seems that similar “healing danger” arises from proximity of philosophy and psychotherapy. If so, then the Zollikon seminars can be viewed as Heidegger’s trial to enter into the “war of the worlds” as the openness of being.

Nors „ontologijos“ terminas atsirado tik septynioliktame šimtmetyje, tačiau avant la lettre ontologija egzistavo nuo pat filosofijos atsiradimo. Ontologiją atpažįstame jau Aristotelio „pirmojoje filosofijoje“, kurios pagrindinis uždavinys yra atskleisti „buvinio kaip buvinio“ prasmę. Tačiau ši prasmė atsiveria ne tiesiogiai, bet tik per tam tikrą mediją. Ilgą laiką vienintele medija, pajėgiančia atskleisti „buvinio kaip buvinio“ prasmę, buvo laikoma kalba. Straipsnyje bandoma parodyti, kad toks požiūris gali būti kvestionuojamas, t. y., kad „buvinys kaip buvinys“ gali būti atvertas ne tik per kalbą, bet ir per kitas medijas. Viena iš tokių medijų gali būti laikomas kinas. Kino, kaip „buvinį kaip buvinį“ atskleidžiančios medijos, specifika straipsnyje išryškinama remiantis Vilémo Flusserio išplėtota „techno-vaizdų“ samprata. Ši samprata leidžia traktuoti kiną kaip mediją, atveriančią buvinyje glūdintį Niekį. Ekrane matomi „techno-vaizdai“ yra savotiški „vaiduokliai“. Tad norint nusakyti kino ontologijos specifiką, puikiai tinka Jacques’o Derrida sukurtas „hantologijos“ terminas. Although the notion of ontology only emerged in the vocabulary of philosophers in the 17th century, ontology has existed avant la lettre from the beginning of philosophy. It is already recognisable in Aristotle’s “first philosophy”, whose task is to study the meaning of “being qua being”. The thing is, though, that this meaning does not open itself directly but only through certain means, or media. For a long time it has been considered that language was the sole media that was able to disclose the meaning of “being qua being”. This article tries to show that this view can be challenged insofar as the “being qua being” can be disclosed not only through language but through other media as well. Cinema can be considered one such media. Making reference to Vilém Flusser’s notion of technical images, the article highlights the peculiarity of cinema as a media that discloses “being qua being”. This notion enables us to view cinema as a media that discloses being’s Nothingness. Technical images appearing on the screen can be regarded as specters of sorts. This is where the notion of “hauntology”, as introduced by Jacques Derrida, comes in as a perfect tool for describing the ontology of cinema.

Dvidešimto amžiaus pradžioje „šventybės“ sąvoka pasirodė filosofų, sociologų ir religijos istorikų žodyne. Bendras šių skirtingų požiūrių bruožas buvo pripažinimas, kad šventybė yra aukščiausia visuotinė gyvenimo vertė bei prasmė ir kaip tokia turi būti priešinama pasaulietiškumui. Tačiau šalia šventybės / pasaulietiškumo priešpriešos šventybei būdinga ir imanentinė pozityvios, gyvybę teikiančios galios, ir pavojaus, implikuojančio griežtą draudimą paliesti tai, kas šventa, priešprieša. Straipsnyje pirmiausia bandoma parodyti, kad pastaroji priešprieša yra pamatinis šventybės bruožas. At the beginning of the 20th century the term "holy" has emerged in the vocabulary of philosophers, sociologists and the historians of religions. Common characteristics of these different interpretations were recognition that the holy is the ultimate total value and meaning of life and as such must be opposed to the profane. Besides the opposition of holy / profane, however, the holy includes some immanent opposition of a positive, vitalizing power and a danger that implicate rigorous prohibition against the touching the holy objects. The main aim of the article is to show that last mentioned dichotomy is fundamental feature of the holy.

Publikacijoje aptariama Linos Vidauskytės knyga „Tikrovė ir literatūra: Czeslawo Miloszo literatūrinė filosofija“ (2007). Autorius kritikuoja Gintarės Bernotienės parašytą šios knygos recenziją, svarsto literatūrologinio ir filosofinio skaitymo skirtumus. Teigia, kad Vidauskytės knyga įdomi ir vertinga filosofiniu tyrinėjimu. Monografijos autorė skaito Miloszo tekstus kaip pastangą kelti vieną iš pamatinių filosofijos klausimų apie kalbos ir tikrovės santykį. Vidauskytė Miloszo tekstuose aptinka nuorodų, leidžiančių teigti, jog rašytojas praktikavo ketmaną ir gyvendamas Vakarų Europoje. Monografijos autorė identifikuoja Miloszą pirmiausia kaip religinį mąstytoją. Tačiau sykiu ji atkreipia dėmesį ir į nemenkus keblumus, su kuriais susiduriama bandant vienareikšmiškai įvardyti Miloszo religines pažiūras. Ji atskleidžia Miloszo poetikos sąsają su fenomenologine filosofija. Monografijoje parodoma, kad vienas iš pamatinių Miloszo poetikos principų, kurį jis pats įvardija kaip subjektyvaus išgyvenimo išgryninimą, iš esmės yra ne kas kita, kaip tai, ką Edmundas Husserlis vadino fenomenologine redukcija – metodine procedūra, kurią taikant sąmonė grąžinama į būseną, pirminę subjekto ir objekto perskyros atžvilgiu. Subjektyvaus išgyvenimo „distiliavimas“ – tai fenomenologinis „grįžimas prie pačių daiktų“, t. y. grįžimas prie verbalinių konstruktų neužgožtos tikrovės. Vis dėlto, kol kalba yra vien kalbėjimas apie tikrovę, jos atotrūkis nuo tikrovės lieka neįveikiamas. Šiuo požiūriu recenzuojama monografija gerokai išsiskiria iš daugelio Miloszo kūrybai skirtų tyrinėjimų. The publication discusses a book by Lina Vidauskytė “Reality and literature: literary philosophy by Czeslaw Milosz” (2007). The author critises a review given to this book by Gintarė Bernotienė, discusses differences in the literature studies-based and philosophical reading. He claims that the book by L. Vidauskytė is both interesting and valuable for philosophical research. The author of the monograph reads texts by C. Milosz and effort to raise some of the key philosophical questions regarding relationship of language and reality. L. Vidauskytė finds references in texts by C. Milosz supporting idea that the writer practised Ketman even when living in the Western Europe. The author of the monograph identifies C. Milosz primarily as a religious philosopher. She also points out to material difficulties in trying to come up with single-sided religious views of C. Milosz. She reveals the connection of poetics by C. Milosz to the phenomenological philosophy. The monograph reveals that some of key principles of poetics by C. Milosz, that he refers to as purification of subjective experience, is just what Edmund Husserl calls a phenomenological reduction, i.e. methodical procedure, where the consciousness is returned to s state primary to the separating of subject and object. “Distillation” of subjective experience is a phenomenological “return to the true things”, i.e. return to reality uncovered by verbal constructs. Still, as long as language is merely reflection of reality, its separation from reality cannot be tackled. In this respect the monograph under review is very different from most of studies dedicated to works of C. Milosz.

In his essay “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” Walter Benjamin discusses a loss of the aura through the rise of photography and cinema. The notion of aura for Benjamin represents the originality and authenticity of a work of art that has not been reproduced. But at the same time it represents connection of the realm of art to the experience of the sacrum. The article deals with the correlation between the loss of aura and the desacralisation of the contemporary world.

Marshallas McLuhanas, dažnai vadinamas medijų kultūros „guru“, turbūt geriausiai žinomas kaip aforizmo „The Medium is the Message“ autorius. McLuhano indėlis į komunikacijos tyrinėjimų sritį plačiai pripažįstamas populiarioje kultūroje, bet akademinėse sferose jis kelia abejonių. Svarbiausia McLuhano mintis yra tai, kad pranešimą esmiškai įtakoja jį perteikianti medija. Atrodytų, jog čia turime reikalą su kraštutinio medijų determinizmo pozicija. Tačiau McLuhanas pabrėžia savosios „teorijos“ humanistinį pobūdį. McLuhano teorizavimo maniera esmiškai skiriasi nuo tradicinės. Jis yra aforizmų, netikėtų ištarų, šmaikščių pastabų, žodžių žaismo meistras. Marshall McLuhan, again and again referred to as a "guru" of media culture, is perhaps best known for his aphorism "The Medium is the Message". McLuhan’s contribution to the field of communication study was highly praised in popular culture but in academic spheres being received as doubtful. His basic idea is that the message is very much influenced by the medium of delivery. One would recognize this position as the definitive media determinism. McLuhan however emphasize the humanistic character of his "theory". McLuhan’s manner of theorizing is other than traditional. McLuhan is a master of aphorisms, incredible pronouncements, humorous quips, and wordplay.

Skaitydami Thomo Mertono knygas jaučiame, kad prisilietėme prie didžiosios krikščioniškosios mistikos tradicijos. Tačiau šių dienų skaitytojui toji tradicija nebėra jokia akivaizdybė. Žodžio „mistika“ paakinta, mūsų vaizduotė dažniausiai ima piešti kažką panašaus į manieringus barokinius šventųjų atvaizdus: akrobatiškai išsiraitę kūnai, „ekstatiškai“ išverstos akys, .pamaldžiai-grakščiai. išsukiotos rankos... Tačiau mistikos esmę sudaro ne ekstazė, vizijos ar kiti panašūs .aštrūs pojūčiai., taip žavėję ir tebežavintys „barokinio religingumo“ gerbėjus. Greičiau priešingai: mistika prasideda ten, kur žmogus nuščiūva ir nuoširdžiai meldžiasi. Tyla, tamsa, tuštuma - tai orientyrai, kurių laikydamasis žmogus išsivaduoja nuo prigimtinės vaizduotės sukurtų vaizdinių bei prigimtinio proto suformuotų sąvokų. While reading Thomas Merton’s books one receives the impression of coming into contact with the great tradition of Christian mysticism. For a present-day reader, however, that tradition is no longer selfevident. Upon hearing the term of “mysticism” our imaginations start drawing something akin to the Baroque images of saints: bodies, twisted like those of contortionists, “ecstatic” big eyes, wrenched hands in a “piously elegant” manner, etc. Yet the essence of mysticism does not consist in ecstasy, visions or in any other kind of “strong sensations” which still enchants the admirers of the “Baroque religiousity”. It is quite the opposite: mysticism starts with silence and a sincere prayer. Silence, obscurity, emptiness are the landmarks which set a human person free from the images created by his imagination and liberates him from the concepts formulated by his natural mind.

Prie diskursyvaus santykio su mistine literatūra pripratusiam šiuolaikiniam žmogui keblu suvokti Dykumos Tėvų posakius ir taikyti juos kasdieniame gyvenime. Pirmiausia tokį skaitytoją trikdo tai, kad čia primygtinai pabrėžiama askezės būtinybė. Dykumos tėvams tai nebuvo problema. Patirtis, kurią Dievas savąja begaline meile suteikia tiems, kas Jo siekia visa širdimi, visuomet yra dovana ir todėl negali būti užsitarnauta. Dykumos dvasingumo esmė yra tai, kad čia nėra doktrinos, kurios būtų galima mokyti. Dykumos Tėvai tiesiog atkakliai dirbo, stengdamiesi kiekvieną savo kūno ir sielos dalį atgręžti į Dievą. Ši pastanga yra ne kas kita, kaip malda. Malda jiems buvo ne vien keletą kartų per dieną atliekamas veiksmas, bet ir gyvenimas nuolat atsigręžus į Dievą tyloje. The modern man, used to a discursive reading and explanation in mystical literature may find the Sayings of Desert Fathers difficult to assimilate and to apply to everyday life. The first thing that strikes a reader is the insistence in the stress laid on the necessity of askesis. Such a problem was unknown to the Desert Fathers. The experience which God in His infinite love gives to those who seek Him with their whole heart is always a gift and cannot therefore be deserved. The essence of the spirituality of the desert is that there is no doctrine that would be learned. Desert Fathers had the hard work of striving to re-direct every part of body and soul to God, and that is what they meant by prayer. Prayer was not only an activity undenaken for a few times each day, but rather a life continually turned towards God in silence.

A text is usually considered to be the unique and universal medium of the meaning. However, the comparision of main principles of Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology and the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola reveals that it is not true. Both phenomenology and Spiritual Exercises may be considered as a „theory” in the sense of the primordial meaning of the Greek word theoria, i.e. as a practice of „being-near-by” (Dabeisein), but not in the sense of ‘producing any text’. Both for Husserl and St. Ignatius the meaning reveals primordially in the medium of imagination rather than in that of the text. Transformed by meditation and contemplation, however, the imagination turns into love which is considered to be the ultimate principle of the unity of meaning and being beyond the medium of the text. Straipsnyje yra svarstomos religijos filosofijos galimybės ir ribos. Daugiausiai dėmesio filosofai yra linkę skirti religijos pretenzijų į tiesą įvertinimui, nors paprastai religijos yra sudarytos iš teorijos ir praktikos, sudėtingos sistemos, apimančios mitus ir ritualus. Religijos ir filosofijos siekiai yra panašūs, t.y. dėmesys yra sutelkiamas į tai, kas yra amžina ir esmiška. Religiją ir filosofiją sieja bendra teleologija bei etiologija, kurios pasireiškia siekiu kelti aukštyn žmogaus sielą link esminių dalykų bei kilimu iš logos kontrolei nepaklūstančio pathos. Vis dėlto, kai yra keliamas klausimas ką gali religijos filosofija?, religijos ir filosofijos bendrybės nepašalina įtampos. Gyvename pasaulyje, kuriame nėra pakankamai tikėjimo gyvybės, kurios perteklių reikėtų skiesti "mąstymu". Religinės žmonių gyvenimo šaknys yra tokios silpnos, kad kartais jos yra neatsparios net menkiausiam filosofinės refleksijos dvelktelėjimui. Yra įprasta manyti, jog logiškai pagrįsti religijos teiginius galima religijos filosofijai racionaliai reflektuojant religijos prigimtį. Logos, šiuolaikinio žmogaus požiūriu, yra aukštesnė instancija negu pathos. Vis dėlto iš tam tikro pathos kyla pati filosofija. Dėl to būtina tikros filosofijos sąlyga yra tam tikras religinis tikėjimas. The philosophy of religion deals with the reflection of the nature of religion. The main task of the philosophy of religion is to prove the rational validity of the theological propositions and in this way to give the logical foundations to religious belief. Philosophy deals with logos, religion with pathos. For the modern man logos seems to be higher than pathos. Therefore, the philosophical consideration of religion seems to be of primary importance for religious belief. However, in the consideration of the origins of philosophy, it's possible to see that philosophy itself arises from some kind of pathos. Consequently, we can say that some kind of religious belief might be necessary for true philosophy itself.
