This book is about the choices that researchers can make when building knowledge in social and behavioural spaces. Knowledge is the unity we seek and, given that social and behavioural research is a human endeavour focusing on human lives and experiences, there are diverse and ever-evolving pathways towards achieving that unity. Any one pathway will only ever yield partial glimpses into human life and diversity of potential choices serves to enrich, expand, and enlarge those glimpses in pursuit of more complete understanding. The book shows that researchers and the researched are far more connected than disconnected in this world and those connections are spread out through a network of interlinked complex systems. The book argues that pluralist systemic thinking provides the means by which a researcher's methodological choices for navigating the ‘Data Triangle'(comprising data source, data gathering, and data analysis strategies) and the learning they provide can be fully and robustly contextualised with respect to those systems and the expectations and influences that emerge from them. Such contextualisations facilitate the refinement, augmentation, and/or narrowing of those choices during the researcher's journey. Anticipating choices downstream may have implications for more immediate choices and more immediate choices may create a cascade of necessary downstream choices. An essential part of contextualisation involves making choices about patterns of guiding assumptions, modes of knowledge building, and research frames. Researchers must develop the capacity to be flexible and adapt to unanticipated emergent events, obstacles, and political influences, making trade-offs where necessary throughout their research journey, always with an eye on both feasibility and quality. Importantly, research has no meaning unless the researcher can ensure that it connects with intended audiences via specific research outcomes, especially since the ultimate judgments about the convincingness, meaningfulness, quality, and utility of the research are vested in those audiences. Throughout the book, special attention is devoted to the role(s) that stakeholders and gatekeepers play in shaping the researcher's journey as well as to what can be learned from Indigenous/First Nations perspectives on social and behavioural research.

Chapter two proposes a systematization of modernization tendencies affecting secularization, and extensively discusses predictors of religiosity. The author of chapter three discusses some of the cognitive foundations that underlie vaccine hesitancy. The aim of chapter four is to closely examine the effects COVID-19 response has had on gender equity as well as on the disabled employees in the tourism sector in Zimbabwe and to suggest strategies that can be employed to mitigate these effects. In chapter five, the main objective of the study is to reduce poverty in Zimbabwe through informal sector support. Chapter six discusses agroforestry practices based on local wisdom of the indigenous people on the island of Java. In the final chapter, the author provides an examination of an international historiography on legal history, the two World Wars and the Cold War.

The Anthem Companion to Harold Garfinkel brings together leading scholars and upcoming researchers in contemporary ethnomethodology to bring out the experimental character of Garfinkel's legacy in the social sciences and beyond. Therefore, the Companion takes its cue from Garfinkel's noted “breaching experiments,” enabling the reflexive investigation of “trust conditions” in situ, and asks how this research interest has been productively pursued and distinctively rearticulated, both within and beyond Garfinkel's oeuvre. Whilst Garfinkel's experimental legacy is often acknowledged, no systematic introduction to its distinctive outlook, tension-riddled diversification, and heuristic interest(s) is available to date. The Anthem Companion to Harold Garfinkel both fills and reflects upon that “gap in the literature,” thereby articulating ethnomethodology's experimental outlook, if not recasting its current research directions.

The numerous and far-reaching socio-political transformations that have taken place on the European continent since the mid-20th century have stipulated the emergence of new approaches and research fields in the social sciences. This book presents a set theoretical approach to sociological research. It revisits existing sociological approaches and discusses their limitations, before suggesting an alternative. While the existing canonical approaches of Positivism, Conflictualism, and Pragmatism are based on biology, history, and physics, respectively, the set theoretical approach is based on mathematics. Utilising its philosophical exploration delineated by Alain Badiou, the book further translates his work into the field of social science. The result of this translation is termed Multiplitism, which evades the limiting contradictions of existing approaches. Drawing on the mathematical notion of ‘set'and relating it to recent sociological turns such as the relational and the ontological, the book proposes a scale-relativity through which the researcher (as subject) and the researched (as object) are integrated. The book will be of interest to social scientists, particularly social theorists and advanced level students.

Social Research and Disability argues that the contemporary rules of sociological methods outlined in numerous research methods texts make a number of assumptions concerning the researcher including ambulance, sight, hearing and speech. In short, the disabled researcher is not considered when outlining the requirements of particular methods. Drawing upon these considerations, the volume emphasizes how disabled researchers negotiate the empirical process, in light of disability, whilst retaining the scientific rigour of the method. It also considers the negative consequences arising from disabled researchers'attempts at'passing'and the benefits that can emerge from a reflexive approach to method. In the early 1970s, a group of Colombian intellectuals led by the pioneering sociologist Orlando Fals Borda created a research-activist collective called La Rosca de Investigación y Acción Social (Circle of Research and Social Action). Combining sociological and historical research with a firm commitment to grassroots social movements, Fals Borda and his colleagues collaborated with indigenous and peasant organizations throughout Colombia. In Cowards Don't Make History Joanne Rappaport examines the development of participatory action research on the Caribbean coast, highlighting Fals Borda's rejection of traditional positivist research frameworks in favor of sharing his own authority as a researcher with peasant activists. Fals Borda and his colleagues inserted themselves as researcher-activists into the activities of the National Association of Peasant Users, coordinated research priorities with its leaders, studied the history of peasant struggles, and, in collaboration with peasant researchers, prepared accessible materials for an organizational readership, thereby transforming research into a political organizing tool. Rappaport shows how the fundamental concepts of participatory action research as they were framed by Fals Borda continue to be relevant to engaged social scientists and other researchers in Latin America and beyond.

Advances in Sociology Research. Volume 33 first looks at the efficacy of a racially defined Black community (Gemeinschaft) in mobilizing participants in the “riots” in English cities in August 2011. Following this, the authors examine the causes behind the crisis in the welfare state, from its establishment to the present day. Additionally, a brief look at the different constitutions of the welfare state on both sides of the Atlantic is provided to assess what kind of welfare state should be modernized in Germany. One study argues that the COVID-19 pandemic ironically benefited the ruling Patriotic Front and opposition parties in campaigning for the August 2021 general elections in Zambia. The authors go on to discuss blame games, socially situated and discursively mediated processes that attempt to assign meaning to harmful events. The logistics of turning the rural community's challenges into opportunities within their existing social structures and conditions to develop a healthier rural community are evaluated. Arthur L. Stinchcombe has earned a reputation as a leading practitioner of methodology in sociology and related disciplines. Throughout his distinguished career he has championed the idea that to be an effective sociologist, one must use many methods. This incisive work introduces students to the logic of those methods. The volume discusses the possibilities and limits of the documentary method in terms of basic theory, methodology and methodology. Triangulation is important in two ways: as a research practice in itself and as a way of identifying blind spots. The interest in the topic of triangulation - taking on different perspectives - relates above all to questions about the possibilities and limits offered by the documentary method for triangulation in terms of basic theory, methodology, and method. This goes beyond the common understanding of triangulation as mixed methods, which involves the combination of different methods and the validation of results. The second part of the book deals with'blind spots'of the documentary method, which become clear in comparison with other methodologies and procedures of empirical social and educational research, but which are also constituted and revealed in the actual research practice (in the field of research). Both dimensions are taken into account in the volume.

Advances in Sociology Research. Volume 26 opens with an attempt to explore the impact and extent of Kuwait's religious freedom in encouraging the accumulation of social capital for the migration workers'community in Kuwait. Although Kuwait's constitution states that Islam is the state religion, numerous faith groups coexist with the majority Sunni and minority Shiite population in Kuwait. Next, the authors discuss the topic of “enlightened” burial reform in the 18th century Habsburg monarchy, with particular regard on Bohemia. Principal arguments are based on the idea of “egalitarian medicalisation strategy” which transcended social class in the new ways of treating the dead. Parental physical abuse is examined as a noxious problem in need of preventative research in China, as well as other places. Prevention may originate from professionals such as teachers, social workers, and police, as indicated by their visiting, helping, and/or punishing. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of professional prevention is unclear. Also discussed in this collection is adolescent pregnancy and early motherhood. The authors question why it is even possible to reproduce at such an early age despite the dangerous risk factors associated with adolescent pregnancies. The evolutionary history of adolescence and female reproductive strategies is analyzed from the viewpoint of evolutionary anthropology in an effort to draw conclusions. The authors also analyze the perceptions of key adults on their role in counseling adolescents to prevent unwanted pregnancies. A qualitative study based on 36 semi-structured interviews was conducted with mothers and health and academic staff in Morelos and Mexico City. Lastly, because Greece has faced the largest refugee and immigrant flows of recent years, one article highlights the efforts of the Hellenic Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs and the Hellenic Government, who prepared and implemented a pedagogically correct method to enable Hellenic schools to welcome the children of refugees in October 2016.

Advances in Sociology Research. Volume 25 opens with a chapter underscoring the importance of this age-old cultural practice of herding in relation to Basotho males and its implications to the non-formal education (NFE) policy and practice. To do this, the authors present the findings of an interpretative study conducted on a snowball-sample of thirty out of an approximated population of 22 0000 Basotho herders aged between 18 and 45 years using the transect walk, interviews and photo-voice data collection techniques. Following this, a study is presented which examined differences in the work-family conflict between the active parenting stage and the supportive parenting stage. Practical suggestions for working parents and professionals are also provided. A third study explores possible trends, issues and problems that hinder the labour market integration of youth immigrants in the EU, suggesting solutions to improve the situation. The economic recession has hit immigrants hard in most EU member states, and youth immigrants are especially vulnerable to the effects of unstable economic cycles in the labour market. Later, the methodological and ethical strengths and challenges of conducting cross-cultural qualitative interviews are analyzed. The authors conducted interviews with racial and ethnic minorities in the United States; the researcher with insider status is Chinese American and conducted research with Asian community leaders, while the researcher with outsider status is European American and studied adults who were unaccompanied refugee minors of a variety of non-European racial backgrounds. Afterwards, the American obesity epidemic is examined, particularly the way federal and state level efforts to decrease fast food consumption have been ineffective among African Americans. This is a call for a specific sociological framework that can be used to better understand race-based disparities in obesity. The succeeding chapter presents a systemic model of working with families of preschool-age children, based on Narrative Therapy and Strategic Family Therapy. The model utilises a relaxed and playful approach which assisted with engagement of all family members. Multi-sensory communication is integrated with language-based intervention, at the appropriate developmental level for young children. The advantages of whole family work for the treatment of common childhood problems are described. Next, the authors study the consumption of drugs by homeless children and adolescents. A dysfunctional family structure and the absence of adult role models negatively impacts access to continued treatment. The book attempts to identify and evaluate the causes, effects and treatment options for youth drug users, and the efficacy of the Mobile Outpatient Clinic's model to systematize and disseminate integrated healthcare strategies for children and adolescents. The final study aims to investigate possible shifts in economic activity due to the financial crisis that may contribute to the strengthening or weakening of productive sectors and, as a result, to the change of the economic map of Europe. The authors determine that appropriate state policies should be established, especially in countries affected by the crisis, such as Greece, in order to strengthen the competitiveness of their dynamic productive sectors.

Deep contemplation of the situation could be the epistemological choice for social scientists. It is a fundamentally different approach to the research, where the investigator is researching the object but also the situation of research and her-self/him-self. Contemplating is a dual way of the approaching the truth. It does not mean that the researcher is mentally divided; just the opposite, she/he wants to be complete and achieve the unity of being as a researcher-human being and an element of the situation (psycho-social and historical). Contemplating enables researchers to see how the mind works and creates the images and reports from the field – what is available for the mind and what is silent or repressed because of the dominating rhetoric of description and rhetoric of feeling?… Contemplation is not only analysis, it is also an ethical choice of stopping here and now to see the situation clearly and reporting it with the all reservations that could be the result of the mindfully-observed interaction of mind, self, and situation at one historical moment.

In this volume of Advances in Sociology Research. Volume 24, the consequences of entrapment in insecure, low-status/low wage jobs of migrants and how these affect their decision to return to their origin countries via the AVRR Program during the economic crisis in Greece are examined using results from in-depth interviews. The authors suggest that regardless of the socioeconomic conditions in their origin country, workers are negatively impacted due to prolonged stay and isolation in jobs with low or zero social and labor mobility, thus promoting their entrapment. Additionally, ethnic, racial and gender division of labor alienates workers from primary and secondary solidarity groups and ties related to their origin county. In a different study, 475,760 fifteen-year-olds in 65 countries were analyzed, showing that in countries with greater inequality of family income or school inequalities, students learned less mathematics. This study offers evidence that family and school inequalities operate in part through fewer educational resources both inside and outside school. This volume also includes a study on cyberbullying, utilizing cross-sectional, longitudinal, cross-sequential, mixed-methods, qualitative, and quantitative research designs. Research is drawn from various disciplines, including psychology, sociology, media and communication studies, education, social work, and computer science, ending with recommendations for ending cyberbullying and a demand that it be considered a global concern.
