The data analysis given in this article made it possible to find out that for high school students in Kharkiv, Odesa, and Cherkasy, the value of education is not terminal but rather instrumental, expressed in various instrumental values. First and foremost, it is the value of high intelligence and abilities. This value is shared the most by respondents from all three Ukrainian cities under study, who see it mainly as a means to achieve material well-being in the future, an opportunity to make a career both in Ukraine and abroad. The hypotheses about correlations between the values of education and high intelligence, abilities with gender, parental education level, the feeling of going to school, and the overall schooling assessment were not confirmed for Kharkiv and Odesa high school students, leading to factor analysis. It was concluded that high school students in the three cities have much in common in their value consciousness; the most crucial terminal values are the same. However, in choosing this value, high school students in Kharkiv and Odesa are guided by their other values (terminal ones), while Cherkasy students are guided by the conditions and circumstances of the external environment, namely the level of education of their parents and their experience at school. In addition, for Cherkasy high school students, their parents’ desire for them to enter a higher education institution is significantly more important than for Kharkiv and Odesa students

The review of the HSE Youth Research Center conference demonstrates the actualization of youth research in the context of intergenerational transfers in modern Russia. The following issues have become particularly relevant: how young people comprehend reality, how their identity is formed; what are the new forms of youth activity and specific lifestyles. The focus is on the issues of patriotism, attitude to the state, trust in government institutions, youth migration, as well as employment. A diverse palette of studies using mainly qualitative methodology is demonstrated.

Studies about youth have gained greater relevance in academia in recent years, expanding the possibilities of analysis of this category, consolidating the idea of youth as a political and social actor. This expansion of studies has highlighted the heterogeneity of young people, fostering research on the various aspects of youth. Rural youth are part of the diversity of social actors that make up the youth, and studying their dynamics and social phenomena has been an emerging need. In this sense, this article seeks to analyze rural youth under the concept of symbolic power (BOURDIEU, 1989), in an attempt to understand how power relations and symbolic domination are present in the lives of young people from Bebida Velha, a traditional rural community located in Pureza, RN. We used as analytical methodology the Discourse of the Collective Subject, which is a technique with qualitative and/or quantitative bias that aims to build a collective discourse based on individual speeches of the same social group. From the analysis of the Discourse of the Collective Subject in a qualitative way, built through 15 semi-structured interviews conducted with rural youth, we realize that the main spaces of socialization of rural youth (education, work, family, and leisure groups) can be reproducers of symbolic relations of power and domination, while representing spaces of sociability and opportunities for social change. The article considers the stable ideas of the significant part of the Moscow students when assessing personal qualities typical for the Russian youth. The study presented in the report of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation in 2011 identified a high level of the youth’s criticism when assessing one’s generation and emphasizing its egoism and irresponsibility. In the surveys conducted in the Moscow University for Humanities in 2011-2019, a part of the same questionnaire was used to assess the qualities of the contemporary Russian youth, and the results were the same. In the ranking of such qualities in 2019, the first 10 positions were taken by laziness, selfishness, sociability, irresponsibility, aggressiveness, independence, indifference, optimism, naivety and cynicism, i.e. together with positive features there are qualities traditionally considered in the Russian society as unacceptable. The last 10 positions were taken by openness, kindness, pushfulness, initiative, greed, rationalism, responsibility, honesty, patriotism and conscientiousness. Thus, the highly appreciated by the society moral qualities are presented in the students’ estimates as not typical for the youth. The additional open questions clarifying the value orientations of students in terms of their estimates of such attitudes of people in the past, present and future showed that in older generations and one’s social circle the student youth appreciate the most the socially valued qualities and want their children in the future to have such. The ranking of such qualities starts with honesty, kindness, responsibility, purposefulness, openness, sociability, sincerity, responsiveness, punctuality and goodwill. The contradictions between the estimates of the youth qualities and the expected qualities of one’s social circle have been repeatedly confirmed at the empirical level. However, this is not a feature of the student youth but rather a result of the social anomie in the sphere of value orientations in the transition period. The authors believe that the transformation trend of students’ value orientations towards individualism is stable but not typical for the youth in general.

Abstract Analyzing the sociology in Central and Eastern Europe before and after the Great Change in 1989, the article aims to present the main epistemological questions that Post-Western sociology raises for the discipline of sociology as a whole. The focus is put on a paradoxical feature in the development of sociology in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe: before 1989, under conditions of Marxist monoparadigmality, relative isolation of scientific cognition, and political and ideological pressure, sociological research in these countries was characterized by methodological rigor and conceptual innovativeness, while after 1989, in the context of institutionalized plurality of paradigms (polyparadigmality), and intensive scientific exchange, the dominant tendency is—for social scientists in the countries in question—to borrow methodologies, theories, and concepts from the Western sociological tradition, without analyzing the epistemic relevance of these loans with regard to the societies in which they are applied. This paradox is examined in terms of sociological production in two research fields: the general sociological theory of society and sociology of youth. Comparing studies and analyses carried out in these two fields in Central and Eastern Europe before and after the Great Change, the article demonstrates that Post-Western sociology is a valid research posture for a wide variety of sociological practices regardless of the concrete national, theoretical, or institutional frameworks in which researchers are working. Sensitivity to the context of research is what permits Post-Western sociology to eliminate cognitive hierarchies and inequalities and restores the epistemic autonomy of each cognitive practice, emphasizing the inevitable cultural variations in the interpretation of one and the same phenomenon and the impact of these variations on methodology. In this sense, Post-Western sociology raises important epistemological problems regarding the relationship between maintaining the disciplinary principles of sociological knowledge on the one hand, and the application of those principles in different epistemic contexts on the other hand. The main question could be formulated as follows: how does Post-Western sociology enrich the deontological and epistemological principles of the discipline and in what way does it contribute to developing its scientific project?

sociology of youth ,quarter-life crisis ,identity ,emerging adulthood ,Sociology (General) ,HM401-1281 - Abstract
In today’s post-industrial societies, young people, compared to previous generations, experience longer and more complex processes of creating professional identity, developing a career or finding “one’s vocation”. They also face difficulties in achieving financial independence, starting a family, and leaving parental homes, which altogether define the status of an adult person. Based on the overview of sociological and psychological scholarly literature, the complexity of young people’s identity formation in the context of a passage towards social maturity is analysed. The most significant tensions related to the question of “who am I and what do I want” are emphasized in the article, together with the circumstances of contemporary society that stimulate them. (Non-)applicability of the concept of the quarter-life crisis is finally highlighted in order to summarise, reflect, and explain some of the experiences and life events of young people. The title of the article is a famous quotation of Tennessee Williams.

Sociological analysis of transformation trends of educational paths of high school seniors and students is presented. Satisfaction with higher education among young people in Russia and in comparison with foreign studies is examined. The article also presents the results of a longitudinal study of high school seniors and students of several Russian higher educational establishments. Defining characteristics and dominant career orientation have been studied. Russian students are generally satisfied with their choice and intend to continue their studies, although they would like to improve career guidance efficiency. Students are aware of perspectives and advantages and choose to obtain education. Most of them have no regrets concerning their choice, believe that their specialty is in demand and plan to work within their specialty.

Numerous negative representations of youth emerged in the aftermath of the 2011 English riots. This article intends to fill a gap in the literature on the 'riot-affected' areas by looking at how youths from Tottenham (the North London constituency where a peaceful demonstration escalated into the English riots of 2011) deal with stereotypical and homogeneous portrayals put forward by the British mainstream news media and many government ministers. In drawing on an alternative conceptualisation of reflexivity that spells out how reflexive orientations relate to lived experiences, the article aims to open up novel pathways for understanding youth reflexivity in the context of being regularly subjected to negative representations. This is achieved by tying reflexive activity more closely to Alfred Schütz's notion of 'stock of knowledge'. The study applies qualitative methods to empirically address how a group of eighteen 15- to 25-year-olds from Tottenham reflexively negotiate the harmful consequences of stigmatised identities. The most striking conclusion to emerge from the data is that Tottenham's young people embody a diverse range of youth identities and reflexive attitudes; a conclusion that flies in the face of the way in which much of the media depicted youths after the riots. In this paper, the authors consider the problem of intercultural communication on the example of comparison of images of self-presentation of Russian and American youth who use social networks “Vkontakte” and “Facebook”. The authors, jn the basis of the idea of double contingently and unity of information, namely the communication and understanding that is used in the theory of Nicholas Luhmann, conducted the survey. In this study, by analyzing public information on personal pages of users in social networks “Vkontakte” and “Facebook”, an atterupt was wade to identify the methods and forms of constructing identity of Russian and American social media users. The article compares and assesses the information that these users post on their personal pages in social networks. In the study the authors come to the couclision that American users are more dynamic and open in communication than Russian users, however, both groups of users from Russia and from America have been trying to build a positive social image of themselves on the Internet. The article has a theoretical and applied nature, and it will be relevant for researchers studying sociology of youth and intercultural communication.

Zanardi or about exactness. A tribute to the art of Andrea Pazienza in a mood of extreme nostalgia. Andrea Pazienza (1956-1988) was an Italian artist considered one of the most influential cartoonist of his generation and a great innovator of the European comics tradition. Prematurely dead for drug abuse, the artist created a narrative universe populated by young dropouts and animated by their strange and emotional adventures. The essay is especially dedicated to Zanardi, Andrea Pazienza’s most famous character, a sort of materialization of a new “cool” generation feature (the 80’s), following the “hot” political season of the 70’s. Behind the violent stories of Zanardi and his partners, Pazienza reveals an amazing competence to investigate the social world through his multiform graphic style and his extraordinary narrative talent

This thesis focuses on the roles that music can play in the identity construction of young listeners who consume it at high levels. While initially a popular topic of study during the 1990s and 2000s, the topic of music and identity has since lost its steam. Twenty years later, we are noticing important transformations in the music industry, as well as in the area of identity construction among the youth. Drawing on this turn-of-the-century literature, we attempt to shed light on how identity-related uses of music are articulated in a context of abundance and omnipresence of music where young people are also called upon to be themselves, in a context of normalized and generalized individualization. Using a cognitive approach to identity development, our research takes a holistic view of identity that avoids dividing it into different components. Rather than considering personal identity and social identity, we adopt a continuum that joins a reflexive pole and a social pole, on which each deploys a unique amalgam of identity processes. Finally, we also distinguish three identity profiles among our participants, the introspectives, the observers, and the explorers, who distinguish themselves by the sources from which they draw information about themselves. This research is based on 15 semi-structured interviews conducted with young students attending CEGEPs in the greater Montreal area. During these interviews, the participants shared their identity pathways, their habits of music consumption, as well as the place of music in their lives, and their concept of self. Our analysis reveals changing relationships to music, especially in terms of repertoires which are becoming more extensive and listening times which are becoming more frequent. We also observe that the identity profiles use music differently, notably at the level of reflection, self-analysis, and emotions for our introspective profile, music intervenes at the level of belonging and identification for the observers, and the level of exploration for the explorers. Finally, we observe changing logic at the level of self-reflection through music and propose the concept of self-mapping to substitute Simon Frith's identity badge.

Abstract: The objective of this article is to enter some productions about youth and generations, having as basis for analysis the ideological decadence, coined by Georg Lukács. With this I intend to affirm that the bases of some specializations contribute to the dissemination of concepts guided by expressions of the social issue attributed to the subjects individually, in a kind of affirmation of subject essence, which carries determinability, i.e., are impregnated with a depreciative ontology of the human.

The paper analyzes the recent changes in the senses of youth in sociology and public policies in Brazil, with the aim of understanding the intellectual and institutional origins of these senses. Highlights the constitution of a paradigm, th e young man as a social subject, which appears in the core of a vast repertoire of ideas in public and academic space. Bibliographical sources indicated remarkable merges between actors and social, political and academic institutions that have the youth as its motto. Approaches some of the new theoretical frameworks and research problems on youth, after a brief mention of classical references in the sociology of youth. Among these new standards, those who treat youth in a second modernity or late modernity, where precisely the paradigm of youth as social subjects will emerge, which will well serve as the official discourse of supranational development agencies). It finishes this text with a digression about the danger of smuggling and intellectual accommodations in the field of social research on the youths, a humble call to critical and reflexiv e sociological imagination.

SOCIAL skills ,RUSSIAN students ,LIFESTYLES - Abstract
Proceeding from the materials of published works on the topics range of the research and supplementing them with her own studies, the author singles out the healthy lifestyle discourse prevailing in the Russian student environment which is made up by the existing life experience of students, their communicative practices and represents a conscious or unconscious imbalance of practices in their daily life toward health risk factors. It has been found out that in spite of their realizing the risk factors that may affect their health in the future, Russian students are not eager to become champions of healthy behavior by default. Sociological research has found a need in the students of assistance and support for their informal efforts of implementing healthy behavior into their daily lifestyle. Moreover, in this social and demographic group the demand has been revealed for an "external organizer" of healthy lifestyle, which speaks about the social skills of "healthy behavior" being not formed at an earlier age. The research conducted places to the foreground the urge of massively involving students into the development and fulfillment of social projects associated with healthy lifestyle directly in their home university environment. The youths and its manifestations has gained more and more space in academia, that motivated his interest in research. Based on the Sociology of youth we seek to know and understand the manifestations of youth cultures, present in a room of high school to a public school in the city of Presidente Prudente. How they relate to one another and through the discipline of physical education-based on the principles of body Culture Movement-you can create a channel of dialogue between the same and consequently with the school. We use the methodology of the ethnographic type in this, the researcher is part of the analysis medium, aiming to meet the daily life of social actors. Thus, we observe the dynamism present in the school context, such as its heterogeneity. It was also noticeable that, through the discipline of physical education, it was possible to create a Dialogic channel, being class a space for cultural exchange and collective buildings, an eminently juvenile environment.

The present investigation, linked to "Line 3 - Formative Processes, Childhood and Youth" had as general objective to identify the motivations and causes of dropout of young students from a state school, located in the municipality of Presidente Prudente - SP. We analyzed which were the endogenous and exogenous factors to the investigated institution that corroborated for the young students to opt for the interruption of school life. We carried out a case study of the school unit, which included semi-structured interviews with young absentees. This stage of the research aimed to outline a profile of the students and identify their perception of the investigated phenomenon and the future possibilities of continuing school life. In addition, the study carried out the analysis of quantitative data on school dropout produced by the investigated institution in the last decade, such as the minutes of annual councils and the School Census carried out by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (INEP). The investigation also considered the documents that govern the operating norms and guidelines of the investigated institution. The collected data were cataloged and analyzed using the content analysis technique, taking as a reference and theoretical framework the Sociology of Youth, Studies on Youth Cultures, Merleaupontyan Phenomenology, Feminist Theory and Gender Studies. The research had a predominance of qualitative aspects, since its main objective was to understand the relationship between motherhood, youth and dropout, starting from the hypothesis that, in the investigated school, motherhood works as a preponderant factor for the abandonment of school. school life of the young mothers, as well as for the end of the youth experiences of these students. After the investigation carried out, we point out the following results: a-) in the investigated school space, most of the young dropouts due to maternity do not have a wide support network and are, in most cases, the only ones responsible for caring for the baby and, given this factor, they take care of themselves. all responsibility for their own school failure; b-) the lack of adequate Public Policies makes juvenile maternity an obstacle to the permanence of students in the school environment, this difficulty is due to the treatment they receive within the school, the lack of vacancies in public day care centers and, also, the lack of vacancies in institutions that offer night classes; c-) insertion in the informal labor market is also a factor that affects female youth, acting as a complicating element in the process of reconciling academic (school) life and work, many informal jobs do not respect the fact that the young employee is still in the schooling process; d-) most of the young dropouts are in a state of social vulnerability and, despite opting for the temporary interruption of studies, they consider the school environment and academic training as an important tool for social, personal and professional development and ascension; e-) in the perception of most of the collaborators, motherhood evidenced the end of youth and the beginning of adulthood, symbolizing a kind of rite of passage from one condition to another. The article focuses on the value of reading and the enjoyment of this activity by students of lower secondary schools. The subject of the analysis is the relationship of different factors on attitudes towards reading: gender and the social status of students' families. The aim of the analysis is to learn if reading books and engagement in reading could overcome the negative influence of low social and cultural capital and gender on reading performance and educational outcomes. The study is based on the results of three editions of the national study on reading habits and attitudes among students of lower secondary schools conducted in 2003, 2010, 2013 and two editions of the PISA international survey from 2000 and 2009. ABSTRACT The transformation of Brazilian education over the last three decades has changed the social and institutional landscape for the schooling of youth, with the expansion of secondary school enrollment, and the emergence of a significant number of young people who represent the first generation in their families to obtain a university degree. However, the question remains whether or not the educational inequalities faced by young people have been eliminated, minimized, increased or reshaped to new forms of educational stratification. Nowadays, does secondary school remain a barrier for the completion of compulsory education? Or, on the contrary, has the transition to postsecondary education been constrained by bottlenecks in the admission process? By framing socioeconomic, racial and gender relations, this article reflects on both existing and newly emerging barriers to youth schooling in Brazil between the 1990s and the current decade.

The paper highlights two key subjects of the new Handbook on the sociology of youth in BRICS countries. The first pay attention to mechanisms and structural contexts of youth social mobilization in the BRICS countries. The second deals with the effects of information technologies on social interactions between young people. The author argues that comparative analysis presented in the handbook demonstrates that development of South Africa, Brazil, China, Russia, and India does not follow strictly the path anticipated in the framework of modernization theory

This article explores how temporality and temporal regimes might be engaged in qualitative research in the sociology of education, proposing that such questions matter in relation to how research is done, not only to the topics and themes researched. The article shows how temporality enters into research designs, practices and imaginaries, arguing that research methodologies mobilise intersecting temporalities. Debates in the philosophy of history regarding the collision of temporalities are canvassed, and approaches are outlined for conceptualising temporality in reference to qualitative studies. To illustrate these arguments, an account is offered of theoretical and methodological approaches framing a new qualitative longitudinal study of young people and secondary schooling in Australia; to highlight the historicity of methodologies, comparisons are also drawn between this study and an earlier related longitudinal study undertaken in the 1990s. The article concludes by inviting a re-consideration of the possibilities for a renewal of historical sociology of education. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

- Abstract
Andrea Pazienza (1956-1988) was an Italian artist considered one of the most influential cartoonist of his generation and a great innovator of the European comics tradition. Prematurely dead for drug abuse, the artist created a narrative universe populated by young dropouts and animated by their strange and emotional adventures. The essay is especially dedicated to Zanardi, Andrea Pazienza's most famous character, a sort of materialization of a new “cool" generation feature (the 80's), following the “hot" political season of the 70's. Behind the violent stories of Zanardi and his partners, Pazienza reveals an amazing competence to investigate the social world through his multiform graphic style and his extraordinary narrative talent. In Britain, educational qualifications gained at school continue to play an important and central role in young people’s educational and employment pathways. Recently there has been growing interest in documenting the lives of ‘ordinary’ young people. In this paper we analyse the Youth Cohort Study of England and Wales in order to better document the experiences of those with ‘middle’ levels of school General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) attainment. The overall pattern of school GCSE attainment is one of increasing levels of performance. GCSE attainment is still highly stratified. Girls performed better than boys, and there were some marked differences in attainment for pupils from the main minority ethnic groups. Most notably, parental socio-economic positions are the most important factor. The analyses fail to persuade us that there are clear boundaries that demark a ‘middle’ category of school GCSE attainment. We conclude that sociologists should study ‘ordinary’ young people; however, school GCSE attainment is best understood as a continuum, and measures such as the number of GCSEs or point scores are preferable. The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) is the standard qualification undertaken by pupils in England and Wales at the end of year 11 (age 15–16). GCSEs continue to play an important and central role in young people's educational and employment pathways. Within the sociology of youth, there has been recent interest in documenting the lives and educational experiences of ‘ordinary’ young people. In this paper, we analyse school GCSE attainment at the subject area level. This is an innovative approach and our motivation is to explore substantively interesting patterns of attainment that might be concealed in analyses of overall attainment or attainment within individual subjects. We analyse data from the Youth Cohort Study of England and Wales using a latent variable approach. The modelling process uncovered four distinctive latent educational groups. One latent group is characterised by high levels of overall attainment, whereas another latent group is characterised by poor GCSE performance. There are two latent groups with moderate or ‘middle’ levels of GCSE attainment. These two latent groups have similar levels of agglomerate attainment, but one group performs better in science and the other performs better in arts GCSEs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Youth sociology has a dynamic structure in today's world. Just as young people are defined by their generations such as Generation X, Generation Y and Generation Z, they are also tried to be understood through typologies and definitions such as try to understand them with definitions such as cool youth, crystal youth, internet youth, and Islamist youth. Hedonism, on the other hand, is a philosophical doctrine put forward in Antiquity and argues that pleasure should be made the main purpose of life. This teaching, which started with Aristippus, continued with Epicurus, and was continued in the Modern Age under the name of utilitarianism through Mill and Bentham. Hedonism is also discussed in Islamic moral philosophy. Contrary to the discourse of hedonism, it has been said that ethereal pleasures should be preferred over worldly pleasures, and pleasure is a means, not an end. Today, modernization, individualism and rationalism brought by modernization, capitalism and consumption culture brought by capitalism are seen as effective factors in the birth of the hedonist youth. Considering that the tendency of pleasure exists in today's youth, the subject of this study is youth and hedonism. The aim of the study is to conduct a hedonist youth typology study, which is a new youth typology experiment, and develop a scale suitable for this youth typology. In our study, the scale form of the quantitative research method and the documentation technique of the qualitative research method were used together. In this direction, the hedonism scale with 34 items we prepared was applied to 172 young individuals between the ages of 18-25 and who were university students. At the end of the study, a valid and reliable hedonism scale consisting of 23 items was developed.

RELIGIOUSNESS ,YOUTH ,MODERNIZATION (Social science) - Abstract
Considering the multitude of factors having an effect on the religiosity and morality of the youth at the turn of the 20
th and 21st century, the direction of change cannot be determined straightforwardly. On one hand, young people remain under the influence of secularization, social modernization and religion privatization processes, on the other hand, they also are influenced by evangelization conducted by church institutions. What is more, their socialization takes place within families which, in Polish society, are the first resort when it comes to religious and moral upbringing. The transformation in Poland at the turn of centuries results from social processes based on industrialization, modernization, technological progress and Weber's rationalization. Religiosity in Polish society is not on the decline, rather changing forms, transmuting, adapting to social and cultural change that follows the process of social modernization. Polish Catholicism is viewed as a social phenomenon in laicized Europe That is why, prognoses regarding the Poles religiosity are divergent. According to some, Polish Catholicism will share the fate of laicized religions of West European countries, while others claim that Poles will maintain their religious identity, keeping their Catholic tradition despite progressive European integration and society modernization. This paper contains the analysis of available data, absent from professional literature, accompanied by a sociological commentary necessary to properly assess the phenomenon mentioned in the paper's title. ABSTRACT This article aims to analyze the perception of Brazilian youth on the green parties, as well as the profile of their young voters in Brazil. Therefore, the researchers conducted a questionnaire with 710 informants. The analysis was based on the theoretical contributions from political-environmental sociology and from the sociology of youth. Amongst the results from the cross-checking of variables, we could find that knowing the party and its proposals, being in a more advanced age group, having a higher level of schooling and higher family income are positively associated with the youth vote in the ecological parties. Furthermore, social attachments keep relevant to the social construction of the political reputation of the green parties, since young people get to know these institutions proposals (especially PV and REDE) through their friends. This paper reports a survey conducted in May 2010 on a nationally representative sample of fifteen-year olds from 70 lower secondary schools. The general research question concerned the prevalence of Polish adolescents who did not read books after completing the phase of compulsory education. The aim of this study was to describe the place of books in teenage everyday life in terms of their reading for school, leisure, spontaneous choice of reading matter, their favourites, books they recommended, value placed on enjoyable reading and their social circle of readers. Gender was found to be a differentiating factor in the reading habits of these young people which the paper broadly describes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
