Today, cities are being intensively reshaped by unexpected dynamics. The rise and growth of the digital economy have fundamentally changed the relationship between the urban fabric and its resident community, overcoming the conventional hierarchy based on production priorities. Moreover, contemporary society discovers new labour conditions and ways of satisfying needs and desires by developing new synergies and links. This book examines cultural and urban commons from a multidisciplinary perspective. Economists, architects, urban planners, sociologists, designers, political scientists, and artists explore the impact and implications of cultural commons on urban change. The contributions discuss both cases of successful urban participation and cases of strong social conflict, while also addressing a host of institutional contradictions and dilemmas. The first part of the book examines urban commons in response to institutional constraints from a theoretical point of view. The second and third parts apply the theories to case studies and discuss various practices of sustainable planning and re-appropriation in the urban context. In closing, the fourth part develops a new urban agenda as artists imagine it. This book will appeal to scholars interested in the social, economic and institutional implications of cultural and urban commons, and provide useful insights and tools to help local governments and policymakers manage social, cultural and economic change.

Occorre mettersi al servizio di un dialogo difficile, offrendo una prospettiva che illumina la stessa teologia dell'evangelizzazione. Le tre sezioni in cui si articola il volume – che in appendice riporta anche un breve saggio sul tema della teologia pubblica – riguardano il vedere, il discernere e il giudicare la realtà urbana alla luce della fede, attraverso una analisi e una lettura del contesto multiculturale e multireligioso, con la prospettiva dell'accoglienza e del dialogo. L'approccio ai temi è di carattere multidisciplinare – dalla sociologia alla filosofia, dalla teologia alla Bibbia e alla storia – con l'intento di rivolgere lo sguardo a una realtà che fa parte della vita di tutti, ma nello stesso tempo rimane per tanti aspetti difficile da indagare e da vivere.

Gli insediamenti urbani e territoriali stanno attraversando un periodo turbolento di cambiamenti materiali e immateriali, morfologici e sociali, tutti segnati da una progressiva erosione dei confini tra urbano e suburbano, tra centro e periferia, tra città e campagna, nonché da una crescente differenziazione (culturale, sociale, funzionale, simbolica) del territorio ex periferico che ha portato alla diffusione di stili di vita urbana a scala territoriale. Diventa doveroso quindi interrogarsi, e questo libro prova a farlo in un'articolata sequenza di saggi e contributi, sulle conseguenze della transizione in corso sulla forma e sul metabolismo dei territori e degli insediamenti urbani. Esistono ancora le città, secondo le modalità in cui siamo stati abituati tradizionalmente a definirle? Quale forma e quale metabolismo assumono i processi di urbanizzazione a scala regionale e planetaria? In che modo i cambiamenti climatici – e la ribellione della terra – agiscono sull'immenso lavoro di costruzione dei luoghi dell'abitare? Come continuare a garantire alle popolazioni il diritto alla città, al movimento, alla coesione sociale, alla giustizia spaziale? Come estendere questi diritti a tutti gli esseri viventi, anche oltre il perimetro delle esistenze umane? Loïc Wacquant is one of the most influential sociological theorists of the contemporary era with his research and writings resonating widely across the social sciences. This edited collection critically responds to Wacquant's distinct approach to understanding the contemporary urban condition in advanced capitalist societies. It comprises chapters focused on Europe and North America from leading international scholars and new emergent voices, which chart new empirical, theoretical and methodological territory. This book is the result of an international conference organized by the Commission on Urban Anthropology, the Commission on Human Rights of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES) and the Department of Anthropology of West Bengal State University, in collaboration with the Anthropological Survey of India, the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, the Indian Council of Social Science Research, the Indian Council of Medical Research, the Indian Museum, and the Centre for Alternative Research in Development. The theme of the conference was “Mega-Urbanisation and Human Rights: Emerging Challenges and Opportunities”. Rapid urbanisation began with the onset of industrialization, and has numerous social, economic, political and environmental implications. In the context of cities, where society is essentially heterogeneous and pluralistic due to the presence of several ethnic communities, the process of urbanisation becomes further complicated. This has particular implications for many people immigrating to the city, because the shifting of base involves not only the transcending of long physical distances, but also navigating additional cultural barriers that are associated with alien languages and different regions.Increasing urbanisation is emerging as a dominant trend all over the world, particularly in developing countries such as India. Besides examining the impact of urbanisation on human society, this volume also analyses the various different facets of urbanisation, including cultural adaptation; migration; gender distinction in the context of urbanisation; the growth of the Scheduled Tribes in the urban population; slums; urban space; entrepreneurship in the urban context; and the urban environment. Given its cross-cultural perspective, the book will be of great interest to researchers in the social sciences, including anthropologists and sociologists, academicians, planners, and policy makers, as well as anyone interested in urban issues.

Urban space is a commons: simultaneously a sphere of human cooperation and negotiation and its product. Understanding urban space as a commons means that the much sought-after productivity of the city precedes rather than results from strategies of the state and capital. This approach challenges assumptions of urbanization as capital-driven, an idea which resonates with a range of recent urban social movements, from the Arab Spring and the Occupy movement to the “Right to the City” alliance. However commons exist in a tense relationship with state and market, both of which continually seek to exploit and control them. Initiatives to create “commons” are welcomed and even facilitated by governments in order to (re-)valorize urban space and lessen the impacts of economic restructuring, while, at the same time, the creative and reproductive potential of the urban commons is undermined by continuing attempts to commodify them. This volume examines these topics theoretically and empirically through a wide spectrum of international case studies providing perspectives from a variety of cities as diverse as Berlin, Hyderabad and Seoul. A wider discussion of commons in current scientific and activist literature from housing, public space, to urban infrastructure, is explored through the lens of the urban condition.

Henri Lefebvre is undoubtedly one of the most influential thinkers in the field of urban space and its organization; his theories offer reflections still valid for analyzing social relations in urban areas affected by the crisis of the neoliberal economic system. Lefebvre's ideal of the “right to the city” is now more widely accepted given today's current cultural and social situation. Most current research on Henri Lefebvre refers solely to his ideas and their theoretical discussion, without focusing on the empirical transcription of the philosopher. This book fills this gap, and proposes examples about the empirical use of Henri Lefebvre's sociology from the perspective of different cities and researchers in order to understand the city and its evolutions in the context of neoliberal globalization. The book's main purpose is to revisit Lefebvre's still-relevant key concepts to propose new comprehensions of the contemporary city. Case studies in this book will show also that the reception of Lefebvrian concepts differs across different contexts, depending on the social and political circumstances of each country. The debates in this book both expand the scope of urban imagination, and help to reinvigorate, unify, and empower shared desires for just urban outcomes. The contributions to this book also illuminate the everyday choices concerning the form and social processes of the city, and the inspiration that they draw from Lefebvre's theoretical legacy in the realm of urban sociology.

Durch diese gemeinsame Konnotation scheinen sie häufig zu verschmelzen, zu Synonymen zu werden, so daß es manchmal wenig ergiebig wirkt, von Kultur in der Stadt oder Kultur der Stadt zu sprechen. Das gilt nicht minder, wenn man einen weniger umfassenden, einen neuzeitlichen oder aufkläreri­ schen Begriff von Kultur und Stadt zugrunde legt. Wie Kultur und Stadt als Gegenpole zu Natur von deren Zwängen befreien sollen, so bildet Stadtkultur auch das Gegenmodell zu feudaler Ordnung. Stadt und Kultur befreien nicht nur von Natur sondern auch von transzendental begründeten Normen und Traditionen, Abhängigkeiten und Hörigkeiten. In der bürgerlichen Kultur der · Stadt vollzieht sich die Selbstkultivierung des Menschen. Stadt und Stadtkul­ tur sind Ausdruck dieses emanzipatorischen Schritts. Die Stadt wird kulturel­ ler Mechanismus und kulturelles Symbol dieser Selbstkultivierung des Bür­ gers, so daß auch aus dieser aufklärerischen Sicht Stadt und Kultur als Syn­ onyme erscheinen und verschmelzen können.

The contributors to this book have explored various aspects of urban imagination, so intimately related to a peculiar social environment. They are historians and geographers, linguists and cultural students. Their methodologies are very different, their sources poles apart. And yet, they address the same object of study, social and spatial segregation and urban eruptions, though severally defined: from epidemics to anarchist scares, urban uprisings to mental maps, or the reverberations of urban memories in song, novels and museums. Case studies consider the towns of Liverpool, London, Hull, New York, Salvador de Bahia, or more generally France and America. The networks created among intellectuals and labourers, anarchists and migrants, or the lack of communication between those who feel oppressed (rioters, strikers, anti-vaccination protesters) and those in control, are a further common denominator.In a way, urban epidemics were the epitome of the repulsive character large cities possessed in the eyes even of their own inhabitants. If they were the receptacle of so many foreigners, and shady political characters, if they were the scenes of social and ethnic conflict, and violence, and promiscuity, and prostitution, and drunkenness, and pauperism, they were of necessity a festering sore which nothing could eradicate.It is strange that something of this fear should linger on today—otherwise, how can one explain the lacunae in the official memory of museums?—despite the cultural efforts produced in the opposite direction, with Ackroyd's love for East-End London, with the revival of a Little Italy in every major American city, with the nostalgic folklorisation of past miseries in Salvador de Bahia and in popular song. What sense of belonging can be generated by an obliteration of the past, what dynamic local culture can spring from an absence, from a hole in collective memory? This book goes some way to filling those gaps.

Städte sind Zentren der Kommunikation, hochaktive Knotenpunkte globaler Netzwerke. Hier treffen Menschen mit den unterschiedlichsten ethnischen, sozialen und kulturellen Hintergründen sowie musikalischen Bedürfnissen und Fähigkeiten aufeinander. Aus dieser Konfrontation entstehen Musiken, in denen sich ihr Anderssein und ihre Identität manifestieren, in denen sich aber auch Spuren der Anpassung und Integration finden - und die fast immer populäre Musikformen annehmen. Denn die Stadt als Handelsplatz macht zur Ware, was zuvor als Volksmusik mündlich tradiert wurde oder als Kunst gemeint war. Die Stadt ermöglicht unendlich viele Chancen der Kommunikation, die doch nie ausreichend zu sein scheinen.
