This book on the important question of village viability arose from several organizational innovations. It presents the important experience of intensive village studies conducted by anthropologists and sociologists and describes it with the views of development economists and administrators.

First published in 1999, this volume features articles from 19 contributors on local responses to global integration, with a focus on rural areas and their adoption of new functions as both producers and consumers. It responds to a crisis in the regulatory framework and reconsiders globality, revealing new forms of production and consumption developing in diverse ways amongst these global rural communities. Authors from Australia, Bulgaria, Finland, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Venezuela are represented.

The last decade or so has witnessed a flourishing of research in rural geography; in particular, approaches which have developed socio-cultural perspectives on rural issues. This book brings together well-established and newer researchers to examine the position of rural social and cultural geography at the beginning of the 21st century and to suggest new research agendas. It offers critical evaluations of theoretical positions and advances, introduces new conceptual and methodological tools and reports on recent empirical work on a variety of topical issues in a number of countries. This edited book contains salient papers presented at the XII World Congress of Rural Sociology held in South Korea in 2008. These papers have been selected for their quality and have undergone a peer review process. The rationale behind this book rests on the desire to share the wealth of research presented at the World Congress with interested individuals who could not attend the event and it reflects the empirical work and thinking characterizing contemporary rural sociology. As this sociological sub-discipline evolves along with society and the rural world, it appears of paramount importance to make available ground-breaking research to the international scientific community. Rural sociology is changing and this volume testifies of this change by documenting the introduction of new themes of research as well as the evolution of established ones. In this regard, it provides a unique and uniquely international view of the most recent advanced production in rural sociology. The volume consists of eighteen chapters representing original pieces of research and an introduction that frames them in the context of the evolution of the discipline.

This book takes a fresh look at understanding the dynamics of the organic agricultural sector in Europe, Australia, South America and the US. Many of the authors explore the use of combined methodology, drawing on theory from a range of social sciences to demonstrate that the complexity of organic agriculture lies in the close connection between nature, society and the economy. Likewise, whilst the book depicts organic agriculture as an engine of growth for the organic sector, it reflects also the important role played by, not only producers but also, other actors in the supply chain, such as consumers and certification standards.
