Mortality among the Irkutsk region population was chosen as a research object. The aim of this study was to assess socioeconomic losses and the epidemiological risk caused by nutrition-related non-communicable diseases, including diseases of the circulatory system, among adult working age population in the Irkutsk region. The study was cross-sectional and observational. We analyzed data on mortality, gross regional product and employment provided by the Territorial office of the Federal State Statistic Service in the Irkutsk region over 2011–2020. Social and economic losses caused by early mortality among the population in the Irkutsk region were calculated in accordance with the Methodical Guidelines on using the Potential years of life lost (PYLL) indicator to establish priority health issues of the Russian population at the federal, regional and municipal level. Data were analyzed using Statistica 6.0. The assessment revealed that over 2011–2020 mortality caused by nutrition-related non-communicable diseases on average accounted for 13.85 % (13.64; 14.07) of the overall population mortality. Average annual social losses equaled 154,827.00 (153,098.56; 156,555.44) person-years lost before a person reached the end of working age. Accompanying probable economic losses aggregated over the analyzed period ranged between 9,560.58 and 15,934.29 million rubles. We managed to build acceptable predictive models (R2 > 0.5) on the growth in economic losses due to mortality caused by nutrition-related non-communicable diseases for both sexes and for males living in the Irkutsk region. Our findings highlight the significance of socioeconomic losses caused by nutrition-related non-communicable diseases and give evidence of suboptimal diets being widely spread among the population of the Baikal region.

Study region: The southwestern coast of Taiwan. Study focus: By employing sea-level rise (SLR) projections from the Sixth Assessment Report, we assess the future high tide flooding (HTF) and the resulting inundation extents and evaluate the impacts on populations and economic losses. New hydrological insights for the region: Under the low-emissions scenario, SLR-induced minor HTF days, i.e., 0.55 m above the mean higher high water (MHHW) are projected to exceed 300 annually by 2100; moderate HTF (0.85 m above the MHHW) events are expected to occur daily in the high-emissions scenario by 2090; major HTF (1.2 m above the MHHW) events were projected to occur in 2070, regardless of the emission scenario considered; regarding the extent of inundation, the projected HTF events would lead to a flooded area ranging from 30 to 600 km2. The impact on the present population ranged from 41,000 to 490,000 individuals. The upper limit of total economic losses based on current land use resulting from HTF was anticipated to range from 3.25 million US dollars to 35.31 million US dollars across the low-, medium-, and high-emission scenarios. The at-risk population decreased from 520,000 in 2008–490,000 in 2022, representing a decline of 5.8 % over 15 years in this coastal region.

Being in proximity of high-seismicity regions, Dubai and United Arab Emirates (UAE) in general are characterized by a high level of seismic hazard uncertainty. This study presents a seismic risk quantification for the existing building stock in Dubai. It provides the much needed and critical input toward enhanced seismic resilience and preparedness. Five archetype buildings ranging from 2 to 16 floors were meticulously modeled to represent the most common buildings stock. The seismic performance of the reference buildings was assessed using incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). The IDA was performed as per a methodology from current standards and far-field ground motion records. Fragility curves were developed for three damage states, namely Immediate Occupancy (IO), Life Safety (LS), and Collapse Prevention (CP). At the maximum considered earthquake (MCE) level, the economic losses due to structural damage were estimated based on accepted standard current values. Human losses and injuries were projected using a methodology from current standards. Finally, corresponding seismic risk maps were generated. The seismic risk maps illustrate that the estimated number of fatalities and major injuries at the MCE level is generally low. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The data provided in this article quantifies the potential seismic losses in multi-story buildings located in Dubai, UAE. Besides, it developed GIS-based seismic risk maps, which form essential inputs towards the seismic resilience of buildings. The GIS data described herein come from different sources. The base map including the major roads, key land use classes, and administrative boundaries are from the ArcMap maps library. The Dubai districts were digitized in ArcMap from a rectified Worldview imagery of Dubai. The seismic risk analysis data are represented as attributes of the centroids of Dubai districts, which is the main data layer. The GIS-based seismic risk maps are raster GIS layers, which are created in ArcGIS using the Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) interpolation method. The base map template is from the ArcMap maps library.

The number of earthquakes with high damage and high losses has been limited to around 100 events since 1900. Looking at historical losses from 1900 onward, we see that around 100 key earthquakes (or around 1% of damaging earthquakes) have caused around 93% of fatalities globally. What is indeed interesting about this statistic is that within these events, secondary effects have played a major role, causing around 40% of economic losses and fatalities as compared to shaking effects. Disaggregation of secondary effect economic losses and fatalities demonstrating the relative influence of historical losses from direct earthquake shaking in comparison to tsunami, fire, landslides, liquefaction, fault rupture, and other type losses is important if we are to understand the key causes post-earthquake. The trends and major event impacts of secondary effects are explored in terms of their historic impact as well as looking to improved ways to disaggregate them through two case studies of the Tohoku 2011 event for earthquake, tsunami, liquefaction, fire, and the nuclear impact; as well as the Chilean 1960 earthquake and tsunami event.
