Located at the interface of densely populated and complex urban areas, the beaches of large coastal cities are today subject to many pressures. In these cities, defined here as municipalities with more than 500,000 inhabitants, beaches are the first area of contact with the sea. As a result, they are particularly exposed to the risks associated with climate change, such as erosion or marine submersion. Due to their insertion in a dense, complex and sometimes very old urban environment, these beaches are frequently confronted with a degradation of their environmental quality, whether it is the quality of the bathing water or the sand. However, beaches play a key social role in these cities where the number of green and public spaces is sometimes limited. They are thus confronted with particularly large influxes of users, who frequent these beaches all year round and develop specific recreational and social practices. In large cities, these beaches have a dual function: they are both a popular point of contact with nature and an extension of the urban public space. The task of the public authorities responsible for the preservation of these spaces is therefore particularly heavy and difficult. Then, this thesis proposes an analysis of public policies for the management of beaches in three large cities in the north-western Mediterranean: Marseille, Barcelona and Valencia. Faced with the major social and environmental challenges arising on the beaches and coastlines of large coastal cities, the public management policies implemented in these three cities are compared and analysed using integrated coastal management as a conceptual reference. To this end, this thesis reports on the research activities carried out in these three study areas. These include an analysis of documents related to public beach policies; semi-structured interviews with stakeholders and associations; and a study of the answers given by public authorities to the impact of covid-19 on beaches. On the basis of the results obtained from these three methodological protocols, this thesis shows unequal progress in the field of integrated beach management. This work thus highlights the importance of using a systemic approach to beach management and of strengthening the cooperation and dialogue mechanisms between the numerous institutions responsible for beaches. As a valued, developed and endangered area, our analyses also highlight that beaches are a central issue in large cities that should receive the full attention of public authorities.; Situées à l’interface d’aires urbaines densément peuplées et complexes, les plages des grandes villes côtières, sont aujourd’hui soumises à de multiples pressions. Dans ces villes, ici entendues comme des municipalités de plus de 500 000 habitants, les plages constituent le premier point de contact avec la mer. De ce fait, elles sont particulièrement vulnérables face aux risques associés aux changement climatique tels que l’érosion ou la submersion marine. Du fait de leur insertion dans un environnement urbain dense, complexe et parfois très ancien, ces plages sont fréquemment confrontées à une dégradation de leur qualité environnementale, que ce soit au niveau de la qualité des eaux de baignade ou celle du sable. Pourtant, les plages jouent un rôle social de premier plan dans ces villes où le nombre d’espaces verts et publics est parfois limité. Elles sont ainsi confrontées à des afflux d’usagers particulièrement importants, qui fréquentent ces plages à l’année et qui y développent des pratiques récréatives et sociales spécifiques. Dans les grandes villes, ces plages remplissent une double fonction : elles sont à la fois un point de contact avec la nature particulièrement prisé et elles constituent une prolongation de l’espace public urbain. La tâche qui incombe aux pouvoirs publics responsables du maintien de ces espaces est donc particulièrement lourde et difficile à assumer. Dans ce contexte, cette thèse propose une analyse des politiques publiques de gestion des plages dans trois grandes villes de la méditerranée nord-occidentale : Marseille, Barcelone et Valence. Face aux grands défis sociaux et environnementaux qui se cristallisent sur les plages et les littoraux des grandes villes côtières, les politiques publiques de gestion déployées dans ces trois villes sont ici comparées et analysées en prenant la gestion intégrée du littoral pour référentiel théorique. Pour ce faire, cette thèse rend compte des opérations de recherche mises en œuvre dans ces trois terrain d’étude. Ces dernières comprennent une analyse des documents associés aux politiques publiques de la plage ; des entretiens semi-directifs menés auprès d’acteurs en responsabilité et d’acteurs associatifs ; et une étude des réponses apportées par les pouvoirs publics à l’incidence de la covid-19 sur les plages. Sur la base des résultats obtenus à partir de ces trois protocoles méthodologiques, cette thèse fait état d’avancées inégales en matière de gestion intégrée des plages. Ce travail souligne ainsi l’importance de recourir à une approche systémique de la gestion de renforcer les mécanismes de coordination et de dialogue entre les différentes institutions compétentes sur les plages. Espaces à la fois prisés, aménagés et menacés, nos analyses soulignent également que les plages constituent un enjeu central dans les grandes villes qui doit bénéficier de toute l’attention des pouvoirs publics.

Cet article est destiné à discuter des conditions de possibilité et d’impossibilité de faire du concept juridique (et donc normatif) de solidarité écologique, un instrument efficace pour renforcer l’entrée des politiques publiques dans la transformation vers la soutenabilité. Pour ce faire, il propose de décrypter de manière épistémologique et théorique, les dichotomies socialement construites telles que nature/culture, science/décision ou encore humains/non-humains, et qui structurent aujourd’hui encore les formes de gouvernabilité de nos environnements et des ressources naturelles dont nous dépendons. Nous soutenons que, dans le contexte du changement global, les régimes de gouvernement des relations humains/milieu doivent être réinventés, adaptés à la complexité, au changement et aux incertitudes, défragmentés et désectorisés afin de mieux intégrer les interdépendances comme substrat même de la soutenabilité. Le concept de gouvernance des socio-écosystèmes, fondamentalement basé sur la reconnaissance du principe de solidarité écologique au fort pouvoir transformateur, a selon nous la capacité de rendre ce principe opérationnel pour les politiques publiques. Mais pour ce faire, il est nécessaire de procéder à une introspection anthropologique et à une analyse combinée entre sciences sociales et sciences de la nature, seule capable de mettre au jour les conditions de possibilité et d’impossibilité du transfert de ce concept de la science juridique et de l’écologie elle-même, à l’action publique environnementale. C’est tout l’enjeu de cet article que d’expliciter ce qu’il ressort de cette analyse critique : au-delà des incitations, des injonctions normatives et des initiatives éparses, l’institutionnalisation de la transformation vers la soutenabilité continue d’être freinée à cause de trois types d’asymétries (gaps), étroitement imbriquées : la connaissance, l’implémentation et le pouvoir. This article is intended to discuss the conditions of possibility and impossibility of making the legal (and therefore normative) concept of ecological solidarity an a priori effective instrument for reinforcing the entry of public policies into contemporary environmental governance regimes and management modes, with a view to the transformation towards sustainability. To do this, it proposes to decipher in an epistemological and theoretical way the dichotomies socially constructed by modern European societies, such as nature/culture, science/decision or human/non-human, and which still structure today the forms of governability of nature, of our environments and of the natural resources we depend on. We argue that, in the context of global change, the regimes of governance of human/environment relations must be reinvented, adapted to complexity, change and uncertainty, defragmented and de-sectorized in order to better integrate interdependencies as the very substrate of sustainability. The concept of governance of socio-ecosystems, fundamentally based on the recognition of the principle of ecological solidarity with its strong transformative power as highlighted by science (in particular ecology), has, in our opinion, the capacity to make this principle operational for public policies. But to do so, it is necessary to proceed to an anthropological introspection, and to a combined analysis between social sciences and natural sciences, for the only one able to bring to light the conditions of possibility and impossibility of the transfer of this concept from legal science and ecology itself, to environmental public action. The challenge of this article is to make explicit what emerges from this critical analysis: beyond incentives, normative injunctions and scattered initiatives, the institutionalization of the transformation towards sustainability continues to be hampered by three types of asymmetries (gaps), closely intertwined: knowledge, implementation and power.

Ecosystems unfold over time in response to successive events that modify their components. These events, whether random or not, are the phenomena by which ecosystems assemble and disassemble. Each sequence of states - or trajectory - is a possible history of the ecosystem. Yet, if these events, or their order, had been different, the future state could have been different. However, the order of events, due to the limits of our knowledge, is often uncertain. When this uncertainty is important, it is therefore reasonable to conceive the dynamics of the ecosystem as a set of possible trajectories. If the set of possible trajectories were known, it could be useful to know if a desirable state is attainable, and if so, by which path(s).In this thesis, we propose a modelling approach named EDEN (for Ecological Discrete-Event Networks) to answer this question. It is presented in the form of a formalism whose variables are qualitative and whose values are modified by "if-then" rules representing the events of the ecosystem. These rules are executed one by one, in a non-deterministic way and without any probability. This non-deterministic and non-probabilistic approach has therefore been called possibilistic. The dynamics are then presented in the form of a state-transition graph whose dynamic properties (such as the fact that a species can persist) can be verified.First, a brief history of dynamical modelling in ecosystem ecology is presented, with a particular focus on qualitative modelling approaches, to which EDEN belongs to. Based on the limitations of existing approaches to answer certain questions, we propose the EDEN approach and justify the relevance of its properties with simple examples.Then, the EDEN approach is illustrated on semi-arid ecosystems in East and West Africa in order to know if certain states of interest are reachable (such as the maintenance of vegetation in savanna, or soil fertility in an agroecosystem). To do this, we present and use tools that have not been used much in ecology until now, such as summary graphs and temporal logics. For a given scenario, these tools enable to define (1) the possible transitions between the states of interest, (2) the conditions under which they can occur and (3) the events responsible for these transitions. In East Africa, the EDEN approach was able to determine the long-term effects on vegetation and human activities of reduced/increased surface water availability, indicating a strong indirect influence of the latter on woody vegetation. In West Africa, using EDEN, it was possible to determine the conditions that allowed small-scale producers in southwestern Burkina Faso to develop persistent agropastoralism, as well as the events necessary to achieve such a state.Finally, we discuss the contributions of the EDEN set of models to various fields of ecology, as well as possible improvements and bridges to be built between ecology, systems biology and theoretical computer science., Les écosystèmes se déploient dans le temps au rythme des événements successifs qui modifient ses composants. Ces événements, qu'ils soient aléatoires ou non, sont les phénomènes par lesquels les écosystèmes s'assemblent et se désassemblent. Chaque séquence d'états – ou trajectoire – est une histoire possible de l'écosystème. Mais si ces événements, ou leur ordre, avait été différent, l'état futur aurait pu l'être également. Or, l'ordre des événements, du fait des limites de notre connaissance, est souvent incertain. Lorsque cette incertitude est grande, il est donc raisonnable de concevoir la dynamique de l'écosystème comme un ensemble de trajectoires possibles. Si l'ensemble des trajectoires possibles était connu, il pourrait notamment se révéler utile pour savoir si un état souhaitable est atteignable, et si oui, par quel(s) chemin(s). Dans cette thèse, nous proposons une approche de modélisation nommée EDEN (pour Ecological Discrete-Event Networks) permettant de répondre à cette question. Elle se présente sous la forme d'un formalisme dont les variables sont qualitatives et dont les valeurs sont modifiées par des règles "si-alors" représentant les événements de l'écosystème. Celles-ci sont tirées une à une, de façon non-déterministe et sans aucune probabilité. Cette approche non-déterministe et non-probabiliste a donc été qualifiée de possibiliste. Les dynamiques se présentent alors sous la forme d'un graphe états-transitions dont on peut vérifier l'existence de propriétés dynamiques (comme le fait qu'une espèce puisse persister).Dans un premier temps, une brève histoire de la modélisation en écologie des écosystèmes est présentée, avec une attention particulière aux approches de modélisation qualitatives, dont l'approche EDEN fait partie. Prenant appui sur les limites des approches existantes pour répondre à certaines questions, nous proposons l'approche EDEN et justifions la pertinence de ses propriétés par des exemples simples.Dans un second temps, l'approche EDEN est illustrée sur des écosystèmes semi-arides d'Afrique de l'Est et de l'Ouest dans le but de savoir si certains états d'intérêt sont atteignables (comme le maintien de la végétation en savane, ou de la fertilité dans un agroécosystème). Pour ce faire, nous présentons et utilisons des outils jusqu'ici peu utilisés en écologie, comme les summary graphs et les logiques temporelles. Pour un scénario donné, ces outils rendent possible de définir (1) les transitions possibles entre les états d'intérêt, (2) les conditions dans lesquelles elles peuvent advenir et (3) les événements responsables de ces transitions. En Afrique de l'Est, l'approche EDEN a permis de déterminer les effets à long terme sur la végétation et les activités humaines d'une réduction/accroissement de la disponibilité en eau de surface, indiquant une forte influence indirecte de cette dernière sur la végétation ligneuse. En Afrique de l'Ouest, en utilisant EDEN, il a été possible de déterminer les conditions permettant à de petits producteurs du sud-ouest du Burkina Faso de développer un agropastoralisme persistant, ainsi que les événements nécessaires pour atteindre un tel état.Nous discutons enfin des apports de l'ensemble des modèles EDEN à divers champs de l'écologie, ainsi que des améliorations possibles et des ponts à dresser entre l'écologie, la biologie des systèmes et l'informatique théorique.

The “Researcher-in-residence” experiment was born in 2015 in the Écrins National Park with the aim of enriching collaborations between the world of research, in environmental sciences, and the world of nature conservation. This incentive is based on the observation, shared by various authors and actors, that the links between these two professional worlds are too distant. Creating mechanisms for getting to know each other in a transdisciplinary manner would thus improve the ways of working and responding to the pressing issues of biodiversity conservation. This article firstly traces the genesis and concretization of this experiment through the singular trajectories of its first protagonists, which inform us about the relational, institutional and professional investments made in order to “get to know each other.” Secondly, the story of this experience illustrates that transdisciplinary collaboration involves moments of cross-professional learning. The interest of a residency, even a one-time one, thus lies in the sharing of temporalities and everyday knowledge in order to get to know each other in an epistemic and professional way.

L’expérience « Chercheur en résidence » est née en 2015 au parc national des Écrins dans le but d’enrichir les collaborations entre le monde de la recherche, en sciences de l’environnement, et le monde de la conservation de la nature. Cette incitation s’appuie sur le constat, partagé par différents auteurs et acteurs, que les liens entre ces deux mondes professionnels seraient trop distendus. Créer des dispositifs pour faire connaissance de façon transdisciplinaire améliorerait ainsi les manières de travailler et de répondre aux enjeux pressants de la conservation de la biodiversité. Cet article retrace premièrement la genèse et la concrétisation de cette expérience à travers les trajectoires singulières de ses premiers protagonistes, qui nous informent sur les investissements relationnel, institutionnel et professionnel engagés dans le but de « faire connaissance ». Deuxièmement, le récit de cette expérience illustre que la collaboration transdisciplinaire passe par des moments d’apprentissage professionnel croisés. L’intérêt d’une résidence, même ponctuelle, réside ainsi dans le partage de temporalités et de savoirs du quotidien pour faire connaissance de façon épistémique et professionnelle. Du fait de sa position géographique (proximité avec l’océan Atlantique), de la richesse de ses écosystèmes (cours d’eau à prédominance de mangrove) et de l’importance des activités socio-économiques (pêche, riziculture, tourisme, etc.), l’Afrique de l’Ouest demeure une des régions les plus importantes du monde en termes de biodiversité. Elle est parmi les régions les plus touchées par les changements environnementaux et les dynamiques rurales. En s’appuyant, pour l’essentiel, sur les résultats obtenus dans le cadre du consortium Patrimoines et Territoires de l’Eau (PATEO), ce travail analyse la vulnérabilité et la résilience des socio-écosystèmes littoraux d’Afrique de l’Ouest en termes d’état de connaissances actuelles et s’interroge sur leur devenir. Les résultats ont révélé des mutations environnementales et socio-économiques relativement importantes, positives ou négatives, témoignant d’une forte dynamique des zones littorales ouest-africaines. Ces changements reposent sur diverses forces externes et internes qui s’exercent sur les écosystèmes et les sociétés, surtout rurales, et les font évoluer depuis les années 1970. Dans ce contexte, sociétés et milieux sont soumis aux mêmes aléas, mais se sont montrés plus ou moins vulnérables ou résilients en fonction de leur degré de dépendance à l’extérieur. Cette situation influe grandement sur les politiques publiques d’aménagement du territoire. Due to its geographical position (proximity to the Atlantic Ocean), the richness of its ecosystems (predominantly mangrove rivers) and the importance of socio-economic activities (fishing, rice growing, tourism, etc.), West Africa remains one of the most important regions in the world. It is among the regions most affected by environmental changes and rural dynamics. Basically based on the results obtained within the framework of the Water Heritage and Territories consortium (PATEO), this work analyzes the vulnerability and resilience of coastal socio-ecosystems in West Africa in terms of the state of current knowledge and questions their future. The results revealed relatively significant environmental and socio-economic changes, positive or negative, testifying to the strong dynamics of West African coastal areas. These changes are based on various external and internal forces exerted on ecosystems and societies, especially rural ones, and have been causing them to evolve since the 1970s. In this context, societies and environments are subject to the same hazards, but have shown themselves to be more or less vulnerable or resilient depending on their degree of dependence on the outside. This situation greatly influences public land use planning policies.

Spain has more than 2.5 M ha of olive groves, with 60% of this area (i.e., 1.5 M ha) concentrated in the region of Andalusia (Southern Spain). Assuming the socio-ecological characteristics of these crops, of which their contribution to ecosystemic services (ES) is fundamental for society, it is highly relevant to direct their management towards practices that guarantee their durability. Organic management of olive groves constitutes a multifunctional model that contributes to ensuring its sustainability and represents 2.4–3.5% of the olive grove area in Spain. Taking the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Estepa (Southwestern Spain) as a study model, where organic olive groves are novel, a study of the impacts of erosion on the economic, social, and environmental factors associated with this management was carried out in addition to estimating its impacts. The results showed how organic management promotes edaphic fertility, keeping the levels of diffuse pollution under the legislative limits. Although the increase in erosion has negative effects on the sustainability/durability of agricultural holdings, organic management consolidates a sustainable model that satisfies farmers’ demands. Therefore, organic farming is a model that focuses on the correct use of natural resources associated with the geographical region of study, and contributes to increasing the sustainability of olive groves.

Marine Recreational Fishing (MRF) is growing worldwide in scientific interest, as evidenced by the increasing number of dedicated publications. Studies on the impacts and benefits to socio-ecosystems and mental health are driving this gradual awareness. In the Mediterranean, MRF is currently responsible for 10% of the catches though, in the context of small-scale fisheries decline, it may become dominant. Sustaining this activity represents a universal challenge for the future of mankind. However, the potential influence of anglers' heterogeneity on both the environment and the Catch Per Unit of Effort (CPUE), used internationally to evaluate fish harvest and as a stocks indicator, hinders MRF management. In addition, little data is available on onshore fishing, while the number of practitioners may increase sharply in the context of a socio-economic crisis, especially in marine protected areas (MPA). We conducted a year-round survey in 2017–2018 in a French Mediterranean MPA subject to tourist flows, during which 144 onshore anglers were polled by semi-directive interviews. We used a typology based on technical and socio-economic data of anglers to describe their behaviour diversity and its influence on CPUE and, more broadly, the marine environment in multi-species fisheries. We characterised four onshore angler profiles, segregated in space and time, including one identified as at risk of causing impacts. Our analyses support using total and per species CPUE independently of profiles to evaluate onshore MRF harvest, except for four species. CPUE seem based on the profiles’ skills and self-regulation which induce similar yields between anglers in the absence of control. This demonstrates the importance of taking into account angler behaviour, as each profile could react differently to management actions and highlights that CPUE could be used to detect the effect of changes in regulation in the framework of adaptive management. Our results support that MRF regulations should be simplified and homogenised at the national level and cooperation with fishing shops in MPA co-management should be promoted.

Detecting socio-ecological boundaries in traditional rural landscapes is very important for the planning and sustainability of these landscapes. Most of the traditional methods to detect ecological boundaries have two major shortcomings: they are unable to include uncertainty, and they often exclude socio-economic information. This paper presents a new approach, based on unsupervised Bayesian network classifiers, to find spatial clusters and their boundaries in socio-ecological systems. As a case study, a Mediterranean cultural landscape was used. As a result, six socio-ecological sectors, following both longitudinal and altitudinal gradients, were identified. In addition, different socio-ecological boundaries were detected using a probability threshold. Thanks to its probabilistic nature, the proposed method allows experts and stakeholders to distinguish between different levels of uncertainty in landscape management. The inherent complexity and heterogeneity of the natural landscape is easily handled by Bayesian networks. Moreover, variables from different sources and characteristics can be simultaneously included. These features confer an advantage over other traditional techniques.

Species feeding on plants or animals raised or caught by humans, a behaviour termed “depredation”, often leads to severe Human-Wildlife Conflicts (HWC). Depredation has been reported worldwide, and in marine ecosystems, has been developed by many large predators feeding on fisheries catches, impacting both fishing activities and ecological interactions. However, although ecosystem-based approaches are increasingly used in fisheries management, the ecosystem-wide effects of depredation are still rarely considered holistically. Therefore, this thesis (i) identified limitations, gaps, and priorities for the development of modelling approaches that incorporate depredation and (ii) evaluated the ability of two existing modelling approaches to characterize the consequences of marine depredation and, more specifically, to understand the issues and conditions required for fishing activities and marine depredating species to co-exist. This thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the context this work.Chapter 2 identifies key knowledge gaps and highlights key future directions for providing effective inclusion of depredation in modelling studies through a systematic review. Chapter 3 uses the Ecopath framework to assess the ecosystem effects of depredation in a well-documented case study involving marine mammals and a commercial fishery. Chapter 4 relies on qualitative modelling of system feedback to assess the conditions for an exploited resource, a fishery and a depredating species to persist in depredation-impacted marine systems, and how marine depredation affects long-term responses to alternative scenarios. Finally, the general discussion presented in Chapter 5, provides recommendations to better understand and predict the effects of depredation at the socio-ecosystem level., Les espèces qui se nourrissent de plantes ou d’animaux élevés ou capturés par l’homme, un comportement appelé « déprédation », entraînent souvent de graves Conflits Homme-Faune sauvage (CHF). La déprédation a été signalée dans le monde entier et, dans les écosystèmes marins, elle a été développée par de nombreux grands prédateurs se nourrissant des prises de pêche, ce qui a un impact à la fois sur les activités de pêche et les interactions écologiques. Cependant, bien que les approches écosystémiques soient de plus en plus utilisées dans la gestion des pêches, les effets de la déprédation sur l’ensemble de l’écosystème sont encore rarement considérés de manière holistique. Par conséquent, cette thèse a (i) identifié les limites, manques et priorités pour le développement d’approches de modélisation intégrant la déprédation et (ii) évalué la capacité de deux approches de modélisation existantes pour caractériser les conséquences de la déprédation marine et, plus spécifiquement, comprendre les enjeux et conditions requises pour que les activités d’exploitation halieutique et les déprédateurs marins puissent co-exister. Cette thèse est composée de cinq chapitres. Le chapitre 1 présente le contexte dans lequel s’inscrit ces travaux. Le chapitre 2 identifie les principales lacunes dans les connaissances et met en évidence les principales orientations futures pour parvenir à une inclusion efficace de la déprédation dans les études de modélisation en réalisant une revue systématique. Le chapitre 3 utilise le cadre Ecopath pour évaluer les effets de la déprédation sur l'écosystème dans une étude de cas bien documentée impliquant des mammifères marins et une pêcherie commerciale. Le chapitre 4 s'appuie sur une modélisation qualitative pour évaluer les conditions de persistance d'une ressource exploitée, d'une pêcherie et d'une espèce déprédatrice dans les systèmes marins touchés par la déprédation, et la façon dont la déprédation marine affecte les réponses à long terme à des scénarios alternatifs. Enfin, la discussion générale présentée dans le chapitre 5, fournit des recommandations qui vise à mieux comprendre et prévoir les effets de la déprédation au niveau du socio-écosystème.

Transport infrastructures are known to have major negative impacts on species and ecosystems dynamics, leading to the alteration and fragmentation of habitats and landscape patterns. But the construction of these infrastructures can also be at the origin of the creation of new environments, in particular through the measures implemented to reduce their impacts. Originally built to prevent flooding, stormwater ponds also limit the release of pollutants from infrastructure into the natural environment, thus functioning as a buffer zone. Scientists and managers today note the spontaneous use of these ponds by several species of amphibians. These species, which depend on both terrestrial and aquatic environments, are particularly sensitive to the quality and connectivity of their habitats. Transport infrastructures are known to have major negative impacts on species and ecosystems dynamics, leading to the alteration and fragmentation of habitats and landscape patterns. But the construction of these infrastructures can also be at the origin of the creation of new environments, in particular through the measures implemented to reduce their impacts.Originally built to prevent flooding, stormwater ponds also limit the release of pollutants from infrastructure into the natural environment, thus functioning as a buffer zone. Scientists and managers today note the spontaneous use of these ponds by several species of amphibians. Globally there is a crisis due to the accelerated detriment of fishery resources, largely due to weak governance, lack of management and lack of knowledge. In Colombia, some management tools have been implemented to move towards co-management of fishery resources, highlighting the Exclusive Artisanal Fishing Zone (ZEPA) of the Colombian Pacific. The present research contributes to the knowledge of the state of the fishing resources and to the analysis of the management of the north zone of the Colombian Pacific, after the implementation of the ZEPA. It collects the fishery data of the area, registered by governmental institutions and NGOs, to analyze the interannual dynamics and compare the effects of the implementation of the ZEPA, in particular with indices such as landing by unit of effort, maximum sustainable yield and effort. Likewise, qualitative information was obtained, through four focus groups, with the participation of 27 fishers and 15 semi-structured interviews with researchers, in order to assess the state of the eight principles proposed by economist Elinor Ostrom for a successful co-management of the resources in the ZEPA. In addition, a catch quota from the MSY is proposed for each of the fishing gear and species of commercial importance, following the precautionary approach proposed by FAO. With the results, a vision of the state of the Ostrom principles was built, evidencing the willingness of fishermen to move towards collective management of resources, as well as the urgency of strengthening the monitoring of resources and rules and agreeing sanctions for Violators. This study highlights the strengths of the ZEPA in Colombia and presents the minimum factors required to strengthen and managed it effectively in the immediate future. A nivel global existe una crisis por el acelerado detrimento de los recursos pesqueros, en gran parte por una débil gobernanza, ausencia de manejo y la falta de conocimiento. En Colombia, se han implementado algunas herramientas de manejo para avanzar hacia la cogestión de los recursos pesqueros, destacándose la Zona Exclusiva de Pesca Artesanal (ZEPA) del Pacífico Colombiano. La presente investigación aporta al conocimiento del estado de los recursos pesqueros y al análisis del manejo de la zona norte del Pacífico colombiano, ante la implementación de la ZEPA. Recopila los datos pesqueros del área, registrados por instituciones gubernamentales y ONGs, para analizar la dinámica interanual y comparar los efectos de la implementación de la ZEPA, en particular con índices como el desembarco por unidad de esfuerzo, rendimiento y esfuerzo máximo sostenible. Así mismo, se obtuvo información cualitativa, a través de cuatro grupos focales, con la participación de 27 pescadores y 15 entrevistas semiestructuradas a investigadores, con el fin de evaluar el estado de los ocho principios propuestos por la economista Elinor Ostrom para una exitosa cogestión de los recursos pesqueros en la ZEPA. Además, se propone una cuota de captura a partir del RMS para cada una de las artes de pesca y especies de importancia comercial, siguiendo el enfoque precautorio propuesto por FAO. Con los resultados se construyó una visión del estado de los principios de Ostrom, evidenciando la disposición de los pescadores para avanzar hacia una gestión colectiva de los recursos, así como la urgencia de fortalecer el monitoreo de los recursos y de las reglas, como la necesidad de consensuar sanciones para los infractores. Este estudio destaca las fortalezas de la ZEPA en Colombia y presenta los factores mínimos requeridos para fortalecerla y manejarla efectivamente en un futuro inmediato. Los sistemas agroforestales familiares (SAF) reflejan las especies vegetales de importancia para quienes los manejan. Cada especie, se mantiene en el lugar gracias a un saber situado, culturalmente adscripto, una historia y un momento particular. El objetivo de este trabajo es identificar las plantas para la protección del hogar, así como su significado y función dentro de las relaciones intracomunitarias en un entorno urbano del Bosque Atlántico y uno rural en los Humedales del Iberá, en el Nordeste Argentino. Agroforestry systems can reflect the cultural identity of a human group. Family agroforestry systems (SAF) have shown a clear preservation of the plants that are significant for their owners. This occurs in both rural and urban settings. Each of the preserved species relates to a situated knowledge, culturally ascribed and with a particular history at a given moment. In this work, we will guide you along the paths of home protection through five plant species. These species are associated with different usehistories and traditions, which intertwine in an urban environment of the Atlantic Forest and a rural one in the Wetlands of Iberá. Both areas have similar pluricultural backgrounds with influence of Guaraní traditions.The objective is to identify the plants for home protection of the region under study, as well as their meaning and function within intra-community relations. Through the plants, we will show how this intra-community relation system works. In addition, how this system is codified with plants and finally their importance in the composition of the SAF. Olive groves are representative of the landscape and culture of Spain. They occupy 2.5 M ha (1.5 M ha in Andalusia) and are characterised by their multifunctionality. In recent years, socio-economic and environmental factors (i.e., erosion) have compromised their sustainability, leading farmers to abandon their farms or intensify their management. The main objective/purpose of this research was to study the drivers and concerns that condition farmers&rsquo, choice of a given olive grove management model. Taking the Estepa region as a case study (Andalusia, Spain), surveys were conducted among farmers with integrated and organic managed olive groves. The socio-economic aspects were the main objectives and concerns of the farmers with integrated olive groves. In the case of farmers with organic management, conservation objectives prevailed, and their concerns were oriented to environmental threats. The education level was a key factor in the adoption of given farm management, as it increased the level of environmental awareness. In the context of multifunctional agriculture, it would be desirable to increase this awareness of the environmental threats against olive groves, in order to provide incentives for the implementation of agri-environmental practices that would enhance the sustainability of these systems.

Adapting forest management to climate change (CC) is a key issue, as forests are crucial for mitigation policies and the provision of many ecosystem services (ES). Understanding the magnitude of the progress made in this respect can help shape further adaptation developments and avoid the putative maladaptive side effects of forest management evolutions. Here, I aim to bridge the knowledge gap of adaptation implementation in French forests.Chapter 1: Based on semi-structured interviews with foresters, my findings highlight unprecedented aspects of adaptations: (i) a focus on productive ES at the expense of other essential services such as water supply or natural habitats; (ii) adaptations rely on technical changes in forest management and do not deal with climate impacts through organizational or economic tools; and (iii) envisaging ecological processes through adaptations is instrumental and limited to small spatial and temporal scales. My results also extend the existing body of knowledge to the framework of forest management: (i) CC is not the main driver of forestry changes; (ii) extreme events are windows of opportunity to stimulate adaptive changes; and (iii) proactive adaptation to unexperienced hazards is very weak.Chapter 2: Assessment of the diversity of research projects in the forest sciences focusing on CC. I categorized projects according to discipline and main focus, using data from the online description of French public calls for proposals and from selected projects. Since 1997, mitigation research has gradually given way to adaptation. Despite pledges for the inclusion of social sciences, research rarely draws on the social sciences and focuses on ES of economic interest. Biomass production is paramount, being addressed either directly or through projects on tree species of industrial interest. Hence, instead of a diverse search for adaptation strategies, climate research is geared toward a few ES. Without denying the need for timber and biofuel production, I encourage public funders to complement current calls for proposals with more diverse approaches beneficial for both biomass production and other ES.Chapter 3: I study how multiple mechanisms for the mitigation of CC have been developed, drawing on a combination of reducing and offsetting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. While mechanisms are mandatory for certain economic sectors, some business that are not required to mitigate their GHG emissions would nevertheless like to do so. I examine two study cases in France to analyze how public and private foresters seized this opportunity to obtain complementary funding from such companies for forestry operations. I focus on offset contracts issued by associations linking public sector forestry agencies, forest landowners, and offset funders. Carbon mitigation was a reason shared by all contractors to commit to the agreement, although it concealed multifarious motivations. Hence, I argue that voluntary offset contracts act like a Trojan horse by enabling foresters to dialogue with entities that would otherwise not be interested in supporting forest management. Regional embedding was crucial to overcoming the mitigation challenges.Chapter 4: To gain insight on how can socio-economic adaptive tools complement technical evolutions of forestry, I designed Foster Forest, a participatory simulation of forest management. It combines a role-playing game, an agent-based model, and a scenario of CC with high uncertainties. Drawing from multiple applications in French regions, I show that climate change is not a short-term matter of concern for private and public foresters. I analyze the emergence of socio-economic changes (mainly payment for carbon storage) in the provision of ES, and participants’ negotiations to spontaneously change the simulation rules. I also highlight how collective adaptive action was steered by stakeholders with a public interest role.; Les trajectoires socio-écologiques des forêts sont considérablement dépendantes des pratiques sylvicoles retenues par leurs gestionnaires. Or, ces choix de gestion sont susceptibles d’évoluer afin de prendre en compte les impacts des dérèglements du climat sur les milieux forestiers. L’objectif des travaux qui suivent est donc de comprendre les évolutions de la gestion forestière induites par les adaptations aux dérèglements climatiques (ACC). Ils se concentrent sur la France métropolitaine, dont les forêts sont l’un des écosystèmes les plus importants – elles en couvrent trois quarts de la surface. Trois thématiques de recherche ont permis de décliner cette problématique : (1) la diversification des ACC (quels biens et services écosystémiques forestiers (BSE) cible-t-elle ?) ; (2) l’importance accordée par les forestiers aux approches techniques, en comparaison des réflexions portant sur l’organisation socio-économique de la gestion forestière ; et enfin (3) l’intégration des dynamiques écologiques dans la conception et la mise en œuvre d’adaptations aux changements climatiques.Chapitre 1 : Recensement, par des enquêtes de terrain, des ACC en forêts privées et publiques. Les adaptations répertoriées concernaient seulement quelques-uns des nombreux BSE forestiers, au premier rang desquels la production de bois, le stockage de carbone et la préservation des habitats naturels. Ces adaptations étaient avant tout mises en place pour répondre à des aléas climatiques déjà vécus par les forestiers. Surtout, ces adaptations relevaient d’évolutions des techniques sylvicoles, où les humains interviennent sur le socio-écosystème forestier, en modifiant les composantes naturelles.Chapitre 2 : J’ai étudié le financement public des projets de recherche portant simultanément sur les changements climatiques et sur la foresterie. J’ai montré qu’une des causes du manque de considération des aspects socio-économiques de l’ACC provient de la prééminence de recherches techniques, très peu tournées vers les services écosystémiques socio-culturels, de régulation ou de soutien.Chapitre 3 : Retour au terrain, pour une étude de cas sur le paiement pour stockage de carbone. J’ai mis en relief comment la diversification des revenus engendrée par ce type d’innovation est un moyen indirect pour les forestiers de s’adapter aux changements climatiques, en diminuant leur dépendance à une production ligneuse fortement menacée par les dérèglements climatiques. Les atouts, mais aussi certaines limites techniques et conséquences socio-économiques de cette approche ont été soulignés.Chapitre 4 : Synthèse des apprentissages des chapitres précédents, grâce à la création d’une simulation participative de gestion forestière. Dans Foster Forest, divers acteurs de la gestion forestière sont plongés dans un scénario de fort changement climatique. Pour mener à bien leur propre mission, ils disposent d’une panoplie de pratiques sylvicoles inspirée de pratiques usuelles, mais qui ne suffisent pas à faire face aux perturbations climatiques. Pour compenser, les participants ont toute liberté de proposer des changements des règles du jeu afin de faire évoluer l’organisation socio-économique de leurs activités forestières. La dizaine d’applications de cette simulation participative, dans différentes régions françaises, a permis de confirmer les résultats des chapitres précédents. Les parties jouées ont aussi apporté un éclairage sur l’importance des structures d’animation territoriale dans l’élaboration de projets d’adaptations, à des échelles complémentaires des seules visions « à la parcelle ».

Ecuador is facing several threats to its food and water security, with over a tenth of its population currently undernourished and living in poverty. As a response, its government is incorporating new patterns of land use and developing regional water infrastructure to cope with the related challenges. In this study, we assess to what point these efforts contribute to integrated water and food security in the country. We investigated the period 2004–2013 in the most productive agricultural region - the Guayas river basin district (GRBD) - and analysed the impacts of different scenarios of agricultural change on local water security. Our approach integrates MuSIASEM (Multi-Scale Integrated Analysis of Societal and Ecosystem Metabolism) with the hydrological SWAT model. Freshwater allocation is evaluated within all the water cycle from its source (natural systems) to the final users (societal systems). Water security is assessed spatiotemporally in terms of water stress for the population living in poverty. Water productivity is obtained in relation to agricultural production and nutrition. The multi-scale analysis shows that whereas at river basin district level the median annual streamflow has a similar magnitude than rainfall stored in soil, these two parameters differ spatiotemporally at subbasin level. The study finds the greatest challenge in achieving water security is the south-east and central part of the GRBD, due to water scarcity and a larger population living in poverty. However, these areas are also simultaneously, where the greatest crop water productivity is found. We conclude that food production for both domestic consumption and market-oriented exports can be increased while meeting ecosystem water demands in all the GRBD regions except for the east. Our integration of methods provides a better approach to inform integrated land and water management and is relevant for academics, practitioners and policymakers alike.

International audience; La mangrove, cette forêt entre terre et mer qui borde les littoraux tropicaux, a longtemps été perçue comme un milieu hostile ou inutile… Elle renvoie aussi à un puissant imaginaire des tropiques qui a inspiré bon nombre de nos plus grands écrivains. Cet écosystème, complexe,abrite les palétuviers capables de vivre les pieds dans l’eau salée, des poissons « gros yeux » pouvant respirer hors de l’eau, des crabes ingénieurs et une multitude de bactéries indispensables au recyclage de la matière organique. Aujourd’hui, confrontée à la crevetticulture, aux coupes de bois, à la pollution mais aussi sous l’emprise directe des changements climatiques, cette mangrove, grignotée de toute part, est en danger. Cet ouvrage, rédigé par des chercheurs spécialistes du milieu, nous montre combien sa préservation devient un enjeu écologique mondial tant cet écosystème contribue à l’équilibre des littoraux tropicaux et à ceux de la planète tout entière. Sait-on par exemple que ces forêts maritimes jouent le rôle de puits de carbone en absorbant de grandes quantités de CO2 ? Qu’elles peuvent servir de filtres ou d’éponges face aux pollutions humaines ? Qu’elles constituent un rempart contre les tempêtes ou les tsunamis ?
