First published in 1998, this wide-ranging and in-depth volume from specialists in economics and statistics examines leading indicators, the timing of cyclical turning points, firm behaviour, financial indicators, economic policy recommendations, transition economies and the service sector in relation to Finland's bid for European Monetary Union membership.

Survey Sampling and Measurement contains the invited papers presented at the Second Symposium on Survey Sampling held at Chapel Hill in April 1977. The volume is divided into seven parts. Part I makes a plea towards improving the quality of sample surveys via the creation of a computerized system of information on error estimates associated with the design and execution of surveys. It also suggests a realistic agenda for future work in survey sampling practice and theory. Part II contains papers dealing with specific methodological problems. Part III examines selected problems of analysis of survey data. The papers in Part IV deal with nonresponse, undercoverage, and related problems. Part V focuses on time series analysis. Part VI discusses applications of sample survey data and methods. Part VII addresses the gap between current survey practices and recent theoretical developments. It is hoped that this volume will be of interest to survey statisticians as well as to survey data users. If it stimulates thoughtful and courageous attack on some of the unresolved problems in survey sampling, its mission will have been amply fulfilled

This special issue revises and expands on presentations given at a conference on comparative research using international panel surveys held in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Five of the articles explicitly or implicitly examine international differences in savings behavior and wealth accumulation. The final two articles use international comparisons to assess the status of young children.

Current Topics in Survey Sampling contains all the invited papers as well as abstracts of the contributed papers presented at the International Symposium on Survey Sampling held at Carleton University in Ottawa, 7-9 May 1980. The topics covered here include nonsampling errors, current survey research activity, superpopulation models, variance estimation, and imputation techniques. The symposium was also dedicated to the memory of Professor William G. Cochran. The volume is organized into six parts. Part I includes papers by Cochran's close colleagues. Part II contains three papers on nonsampling errors. These cover the creation of a unified discipline of survey research to serve as the basis for total survey design; a''swapping algorithm''for interviewer assignment to minimize the effect of nonsampling errors; and the question of whether census counts should be adjusted for underenumeration when determining federal transfer payments to the provinces. Part III describes research activities at four major survey organizations in North America: Research Triangle Institute, Statistics Canada, Survey Research Center of the University of Michigan, and U. S. Bureau of the Census. Part IV discusses the use of superpopulation models in survey design and inference. Part V tackles a number of different problems in variance estimation while Part VI deals with imputation techniques.

On oublie parfois que les enquêtes d'opinion, introduites en France par Jean Stoetzel, on été et restent principalement un instrument de recherche pour les sciences humaines et sociales. Parce qu'elles utilisent le plus souvent la technique statistique du sondage, c'est sous ce terme que les enquêtes d'opinion ont connu le destin médiatique que l'on sait : mais la prolifération des enquêtes, la diversité des usages sociaux auxquels elles sont affectées, n'ont sans doute pas contribué à renforcer leur crédit scientifique. L'enquête d'opinion en tant qu'outil d'observation et de mesure, conserve cependant une place essentielle dans de nombreuses disciplines des sciences de l'homme : tout étudiant en sciences sociales est initié, dès les premiers cours de méthodologie, à l'utilisation de cet instrument, et la plupart des chercheurs en sciences sociales ont utilisé ou utiliseront dans leurs recherches des données provenant d'enquêtes d'opinion. Quels sont donc les possibilités et les limites de ce mode d'investigation scientifique? Quels sont les problèmes spécifiques posés par son application à certains champs de recherche? C'est à une véritable évaluation critique d'un outil de recherche que procèdent ici quelques personnalités scientifiques faisant autorité dans leur discipline respective.

Cross-National Comparative Survey Research: Theory and Practice contains the proceedings of the Roundtable Conference on Cross-National Comparative Survey Research held in Budapest, Hungary, on July 25-29, 1972. The papers focus on the theory and practice of cross-national comparative survey research. The organization and execution of cross-national survey research products are discussed, along with analysis and interpretation in cross-national survey research and the role of theory in the research process. This book is comprised of 12 chapters and begins with a discussion on the strategy of cross-national survey research for the development of social theory. The objectives and implications of cross-national surveys are also considered. Subsequent chapters explore cross-national comparative survey research in areas such as juvenile delinquency and development; time-budget and industrialization; and values in politics. The process of cross-national survey research is outlined, together with analysis and inference in such studies and the role of theory in the research process. The final chapter looks at ways of extending the global reach of survey research. This monograph will be of interest to social scientists, sociologists, and social science researchers.
