This edited book focuses on the interconnections of STEM and Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) in higher education and offers novel approaches to reintegrating them. It paradoxically informs readers of how HSS got relegated to the periphery in the capitalist-driven higher education market and the pressing need to re-organise higher education to meet the demands of competencies in the same education industry. The Humanities, the Social Sciences and the University is an intellectual history of research in the humanities and social sciences. It scrutinizes the priorities, values, objectives and publishing agendas of the modern university in order to assess the institutional pressures on research in major disciplines such as literature, history, sociology and economics. It argues that all these disciplines are currently experiencing a deep malaise – though to different degrees – due to loss of faith in the Enlightenment project, which entailed the pursuit of knowledge through reason. Extreme scepticism, promoted since the 1970s by French Theory, which regards knowledge as an instrument of power, is a major factor in this disorientation. Overall, the book concludes that though universities have grown stronger, wealthier and more powerful in the last century, the quality and seriousness of the research they typically produce are weaker and intellectually less important and the institution is in danger of losing its way.An accessible and compelling read, this book will appeal to scholars of sociology, education and intellectual history with interests in higher education policy and academic life.

¿Cómo se forma un investigador? ¿Qué instancias se prevén en las carreras de grado para preparar en los quehaceres investigativos? ¿Qué características didácticas tiene la formación en investigación en la universidad? ¿Qué particularidad asume en las carreras de grado de las ciencias sociales y humanas? Estas y otras preguntas orientan el desarrollo de esta obra que abre a respuestas y a nuevos interrogantes para los docentes y estudiantes preocupados por la formación en la universidad, dado que investigación, docencia y extensión se constituyen en los pilares de nuestra institución. El rol de investigador se integra en las competencias a desarrollar en esa formación, y, a la vez, se constituye en un rasgo que distingue y caracteriza al profesional que desarrolla actividades académicas. La mayor parte de los planes de estudios universitarios explicitan la intención de formar profesionales capacitados para realizar investigaciones científicas, sin embargo, este interés no deriva necesariamente en el desarrollo de contenidos y estrategias tendientes al logro de esta finalidad. El presente trabajo, parte de un estudio didáctico general para, posteriormente, profundizar en las modalidades de relación teoría y práctica que adquieren las distintas instancias curriculares dedicadas a formar en investigación, especialmente aquellas que se encuentran en el ciclo de formación general. El estudio tiene su anclaje empírico en las nueve carreras de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Preguntarnos en torno a la formación de los investigadores en la universidad resulta de interés ya que problematiza y busca aportar conocimiento sobre un tema de relevancia académica y social, ya que no solo implica a la institución productora de ese conocimiento sino también a la sociedad que aparece como destinataria de ese conocimiento producido.

This book is an expedition into a number of controversial issues in the social sciences with the intention of challenging the conventional wisdom on those issues. While most social science research is interesting and important, a fair amount of social science research is thinly disguised advocacy research in which conclusions too often precede inquiries. The primary topics are those that the journal Nature described as'Taboo'. In order of the degree of censure, the topics are: race, sex differences, intelligence, and violence. The only way to examine these topics with the social science seal of approval attached is through a strictly environmental lens. To bring biological factors to bear on them is politically incorrect and can bring the wrath of the academy down on one's head. Although many researchers successfully bring biology into their research on these issues, they are said to risk career and reputation for doing so. Speech codes stifling free intellectual exchange pervade the ivory tower, and an overwhelmingly liberal faculty hell-bent on eliminating any vestiges of opposition to their ideology. This is unconscionable in an institution that is supposed to value free exchange of all ideas and opinions. The current state of academic social science is examined before entering the substantive realm to try to explore how the topics I explore have become protected from any claims of'naturalness.'Because the left rejects the idea of human nature, it insists that these things are products of social learning and/or social construction and are entirely fluid. To maintain this position in light of the huge and exponential successes of the natural sciences, the left embraces such frames of reasoning as postmodernism, radical relativism, multiculturalism, and political correctness, all of which are examined in this book. Also discussed are human nature, whiteness studies, political temperaments, various criminal justice issues, and capitalism versus socialism.
