Modern developments in the state-of-the-art open-source activation functions for Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have broadened the selection of benchmark activations for Deep Learning (DL)-aided classification. Nevertheless, achieving discrimination of non-linear input image data in CNN is still not straightforward and it is unclear how such novel activation functions can have translational applications with tangible impact. hyper-sinh, made freely available in TensorFlow and Keras, was demonstrated as a benchmark activation function on five (N=5) datasets in its ground-breaking paper. Measuring the value from deploying this activation in a specific application is pivotal to supply the required evidence of its performance on real-life supervised DL-based image classification tasks. In this study, a CNN was for the first time combined with hypersinh to aid early detection of Parkinson’s Disease (PD) from discriminating pathophysiological patterns extracted from spiral drawings. Thus, the hyper-sinh activation was deployed to maximise the separability of the input features from spiral drawings via automated pattern recognition. We demonstrate the accuracy and reliability of hyper-sinh-CNN to aid early diagnosis of PD, evaluated against other gold standard activation functions, including the recent Quantum ReLU (QReLU) and the modified Quantum ReLU (m-QReLU) that solved the ‘dying ReLU’ problem for the first time in the literature of DL. Two (N=2) benchmark datasets from the database of the Botucatu Medical School, São Paulo State University in Brazil, scaled to be in 28 by 28 pixels as the MNIST benchmark data, were used to discriminate between input image patterns of 158 subjects (53 healthy controls and 105 patients with PD) from spirals drawn on graphics tablets. Overtraining was avoided via early stopping and the models were developed and tested in TensorFlow and Keras (Python 3.6). The supervised model (hyper-sinh-CNN) could detect early Parkinson’s Disease with 81% and 91% classification accuracy from the two datasets respectively (F1-scores: 73% and 91% correspondingly). Furthermore, the model achieved high sensitivity (81% and 91%). Thus, this study validates the application of hyper-sinh to aid real-life supervised DL-based image classification, in particular early diagnosis of PD from spiral drawings.

This chapter describes what is meant by semantic interoperability of geographic information, the elements involved in semantic interoperability of geographic information, and how semantic interoperability of geographic information has been addressed in spatial data infrastructures (SDIs), standards, and in the Semantic Web. It is formed of ten sections. Semantics is a term used frequently in many contexts. Section 15.2 is dedicated to the description of semantics. Cognition is an area of study about the abstraction of phenomena by human beings. It is significantly related to semantics. Section 15.3 introduces basic notions of cognition related to semantics. Ontology is a well-grounded notion in the study of semantic interoperability and in the Semantic Web. Section 15.4 explains what ontology is about. This will lead to the description, in Sect. 15.5, of semantic interoperability in the context of geographic information, i.e., geosemantic interoperability. A spatial data infrastructure is the typical way in which interoperability of geographic information is implemented. Section 15.6 addresses geosemantic interoperability with respect to spatial data infrastructures. Standards underpin interoperability for geographic information and spatial data infrastructures. Section 15.7 provides an overview of the current contribution of standards bodies with respect to geosemantic interoperability. The Semantic Web makes an important contribution to semantic interoperability. Section 15.8 gives an account of the Semantic Web and its development. The Geospatial Semantic Web brings together the effort of geosemantic interoperability with the effort of the Semantic Web, as presented in Sect. 15.9. Section 15.10 provides concluding remarks on the chapter.

In the parlance of Library and Information Sciences, metadata refers to information dimensions which are created, stored and shared in order to understand the value and contextual relevance of an information resource. It is inspired from the very idea of cataloguing library resources that has been the bread and butter of librarians for centuries. With the evolution of the World Wide Web and more recently the social semantic web, the importance of metadata has acquired a new dimension specific to web information management systems. The paper attempts to be a primer of various dimensions of metadata management for students, researchers and practitioners in the domain of Library and Information Sciences. It addresses wide ranging theoretical, technical and research issues in metadata management, and concludes with a fervent appeal to take up metadata practice and research.

Η συγκεκριμένη διατριβή στοχεύει στον σχεδιασμό της μεθοδολογίας που θα εφαρμοστεί για την υλοποίηση ενός προσκομιστή πληροφορίας από τον Παγκόσμιο Ιστό, ο οποίος θα λειτουργεί λαμβάνοντας υπόψη θεματικά κριτήρια. Τέτοιου είδους προγράμματα ανίχνευσης πληροφορίας, είναι ευρέως γνωστά ως θεματικά εστιασμένοι προσκομιστές ιστοσελίδων. Κατά τη διάρκεια της μελέτης μας, σχεδιάσαμε και υλοποιήσαμε ένα καινοτόμο σύστημα θεματικής κατηγοριοποίησης ιστοσελίδων που κάνει εκτεταμένη χρήση των σημασιολογικών δεδομένων τα οποία περιέχονται στο σημασιολογικό δίκτυο WordNet. Η απόφαση για την αξιοποίηση του WordNet ελήφθη με τη φιλοδοξία να αντιμετωπιστούν αποτελεσματικά φαινόμενα ασάφειας εννοιών που μειώνουν τις επιδόσεις των διαθέσιμων θεματικών κατηγοριοποιητών. Η καταλληλότητα του WordNet για την επίλυση της σημασιολογικής ασάφειας έχει αποδειχθεί στο παρελθόν, αλλά ποτέ δεν εξετάστηκε σε ένα σύστημα εστιασμένης προσκόμισης ιστοσελίδων με τον συγκεκριμένο τρόπο, ενώ ποτέ δεν έχει αξιοποιηθεί στην κατηγοριοποίηση ιστοσελίδων για την ελληνική γλώσσα. Δεδομένου ότι ο όγκος των δεδομένων που είναι διαθέσιμα στον Παγκόσμιο Ιστό αυξάνεται με εκθετικό ρυθμό, είναι πρακτικά αδύνατο να προσκομιστούν όλες οι ζητούμενες πηγές πληροφορίας ανά πάσα στιγμή. Ένας τρόπος για να αντιμετωπίσουμε το συγκεκριμένο πρόβλημα είναι η εκμετάλλευση συστημάτων εστιασμένης προσκόμισης ιστοσελίδων που στοχεύουν στη λήψη ιστοσελίδων συγκεκριμένης θεματολογίας που εκφράζουν κάθε φορά το θεματικό προφίλ του χρήστη, σε αντίθεση με τους προσκομιστές ιστοσελίδων γενικού σκοπού που καταναλώνουν πόρους άσκοπα προσπαθώντας να προσκομίσουν κάθε πιθανή πηγή πληροφορίας που συναντούν. Οι εστιασμένοι προσκομιστές χρησιμοποιούνται εκτενώς, για την κατασκευή θεματικά προσανατολισμένων ευρετηρίων ιστοσελίδων, κάθε ένα από τα οποία έχει την δυνατότητα να εξυπηρετήσει αιτήσεις χρηστών με συγκεκριμένο θεματικό προσανατολισμό. Με αυτό τον τρόπο είναι δυνατόν να αντιμετωπιστεί το πρόβλημα της υπερφόρτωσης πληροφοριών.Προκειμένου να επιτελέσουμε την συγκεκριμένη εργασία μελετήσαμε εκτενώς υπάρχουσες τεχνικές εστιασμένης προσκόμισης, στις οποίες στηριχθήκαμε ώστε να ορίσουμε την μεθοδολογία που θα ακολουθήσουμε. Το αποτέλεσμα είναι η υλοποίηση ενός θεματικά εστιασμένου πολυνηματικού προσκομιστή, ο οποίος ενσωματώνει τις εξής καινοτομίες: είναι ρυθμισμένος προκειμένου να εκτελεί εστιασμένες προσκομίσεις σε ιστοσελίδες ελληνικού ενδιαφέροντος, αποσαφηνίζει το κείμενο που αντιστοιχεί σε ιστοσελίδες προκειμένου να ανακαλύψει τον θεματικό τους προσανατολισμό. Επιπλέον προτείνουμε μία σειρά υποσυστημάτων τα οποία θα μπορούσαν να ενσωματωθούν στο σύστημα εστιασμένης προσκόμισης προκειμένου να ενισχύσουμε την απόδοσή του. Τέτοια συστήματα είναι το υποσύστημα ανίχνευσης όψεων που αντιστοιχίζονται σε επώνυμες οντότητες καθώς και το υποσύστημα εξαγωγής λέξεων κλειδιών που μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν ως χαρακτηριστικά κατηγοριοποίσης από το αλφαριθμητικό των διευθύνσεων (URL) ιστοσελίδων. Για να παρουσιάσουμε την αποτελεσματικότητα της προτεινόμενης μεθόδου, διενεργήσαμε μία σειρά πειραματικών μετρήσεων. Συγκεκριμένα αξιολογήσαμε πειραματικά τα ακόλουθα: την αποτελεσματικότητα του αλγορίθμου αποσαφήνισης που ενσωματώσαμε στον προσκομιστή, την απόδοση του θεματικού κατηγοριοποιητή ο οποίος καθορίζει την συμπεριφορά του εστιασμένου προσκομιστή σχετικά με το αν μια σελίδα θα πρέπει να κατέβει ως θεματικά σχετική με το θέμα ενδιαφέροντος ή όχι, την απόδοση του εστιασμένου προσκομιστή καταγράφοντας τον ρυθμό απόκτησης που επιτυγχάνει κατά την διάρκεια της εστιασμένης προσκόμισης χρησιμοποιώντας κάθε φορά διαφορετικά χαρακτηριστικά κατηγοριοποίησης, την καταλληλότητα του υποσυστήματος εξαγωγής λέξεων-κλειδιών από το αλφαριθμητικό URL για την περιγραφή του θεματικού προσανατολισμού της ιστοσελίδας και τέλος τη χρησιμότητα του συστήματος αναγνώρισης επώνυμων οντοτήτων στην οργάνωση ιστοσελίδων των οποίων η σημασιολογία δεν αναπαρίσταται ικανοποιητικά σε σημασιολογικούς πόρους γενικού σκοπού συμπεριλαμβανομένου του σημασιολογικού δικτύου WordNet.Τα πειραματικά αποτελέσματα επιβεβαιώνουν τη συμβολή του θεματικά εστιασμένου προσκομιστή που προτείνουμε στην προσκόμιση περιεχομένου ειδικού ενδιαφέροντος από τον Παγκόσμιο Ιστό. Παράλληλα αποδεικνύουμε ότι όλες οι μέθοδοι που ενσωματώσαμε στο σύστημα εστιασμένης προσκόμισης είναι δυνατό να συνεργαστούν κατά τρόπο που να βελτιώνει την απόδοση του προσκομιστή .Τέλος από τα πειραματικά αποτελέσματα αποδεικνύεται ότι η προτεινόμενη τεχνική είναι εξίσου αποτελεσματική για ιστοσελίδες στα αγγλικά και στα ελληνικά. Επιπλέον πιστεύουμε ότι μπορεί να εφαρμοστεί με επιτυχία και σε ιστοσελίδες που περιέχουν κείμενα άλλων φυσικών γλωσσών, με προϋπόθεση την ύπαρξη σημασιολογικών πόρων, αντίστοιχων με το WordNet και διαθέσιμων εργαλείων που θα επιτρέπουν την ανάλυση των δεδομένων κειμένου τους.

Ο Σημασιολογικός Ιστός (ΣΙ) είναι μια απόπειρα ανάπτυξης προτύπων και τεχνολογιών που θα επιτρέπουν στους υπολογιστές να εντοπίζουν και να επεξεργάζονται ευκολότερα πόρους (έγγραφα, δεδομένα, υπηρεσίες) του Παγκόσμιου Ιστού. Κεντρικό ρόλο στο ΣΙ παίζουν οι οντολογίες. Μια οντολογία αποτελεί τον ορισμό μιας θεματικής περιοχής (π.χ., ηλεκτρονικά προϊόντα) ορίζοντας τις τάξεις και υποτάξεις των αντικειμένων του πεδίου, τους τύπους πιθανών σχέσεων μεταξύ τους κ.τ.λ. Το τρέχον επικρατών πρότυπο για τον ορισμό του Σημασιολογικού Ιστού είναι η OWL, μια τυπική γλώσσα που βασίζεται στην περιγραφική λογική και στην RDF, με την OWL 2 να αποτελεί την πιο πρόσφατη έκδοση του προτύπου OWL. Δεδομένης μιας οντολογίας OWL για κάποια θεματική περιοχή, κάποιος μπορεί να εκδώσει στον Ιστό δεδομένα, τα οποία μπορούν να διαβαστούν από υπολογιστές, σχετικά με αυτή την περιοχή (π.χ., καταλόγους προϊόντων, τα στοιχεία τους κ.τ.λ.), με τα δεδομένα αυτά να έχουν τυπικά ορισμένη σημασιολογία που βασίζεται στον ορισμό της οντολογίας. Έχουν αναπτυχθεί διάφορα συντακτικά OWL, αλλά όσοι δεν είναι είναι εξοικειωμένοι με τυπικές αναπαραστάσεις γνώσης συχνά έχουν δυσκολίες στην κατανόηση τους. Αυτή η διατριβή εξέτασε μεθόδους που επιτρέπουν σε τελικούς χρήστες να δουν αναπαραστάσεις γνώσης βασισμένες σε οντολογίες του Σημασιολογικού Ιστού στην μορφή αυτόματα παραγόμενων κειμένων σε πολλαπλές φυσικές γλώσσες.Το πρώτο μέρος της διατριβής βελτιώνει το NaturalOWL, ένα σύστημα Παραγωγής Φυσικής Γλώσσας από οντολογίες OWL που είχε αναπτυχθεί παλιότερα στο ΟΠΑ. Το σύστημα τροποποιήθηκε ώστε να υποστηρίζει την OWL 2 και να μπορεί να παράγει υψηλότερης ποιότητας κείμενα. Πειράματα έδειξαν ότι τα κείμενα που παράχθηκαν από την νέα έκδοση του NaturalOWL είναι πράγματι υψηλής ποιότητας και σημαντικά καλύτερα από κείμενα που παράχθηκαν από απλούστερα συστήματα, συχνά γνωστά ως ontology verbalizers, δεδομένου ότι οι απαραίτητοι γλωσσικοί πόροι (π.χ., σχέδια προτάσεων που εκφράζουν σχέσεις) είναι διαθέσιμοι στο NaturalOWL. Το δεύτερο μέρος της διατριβής εξέτασε μεθόδους εξόρυξης κειμένου και μηχανικής μάθησης για να εξάγει από τον Ιστό αυτόματα ή ήμι-αυτόματα τους πιο σημαντικούς γλωσσικούς πόρους που το NaturalOWL χρειάζεται για να παραγάγει κείμενα υψηλής ποιότητας. Πειράματα έδειξαν ότι η ήμι-αυτόματη προσέγγιση, όπου ένας άνθρωπος εξετάζει τους αυτόματα παραγόμενους γλωσσικούς πόρους, επιτρέπει στο NaturaOWL να παράγει κείμενα σχεδόν της ίδιας ποιότητας όσο με γλωσσικούς πόρους που έχουν συγγραφεί χειρωνακτικά από το μηδέν. Το τρίτο μέρος της διατριβής στόχευε να βελτιώσει περαιτέρω την ποιότητα των παραγόμενων κειμένων αναπτύσσοντας ένα μοντέλο Ακέραιο Γραμμικού Προγραμματισμού που εξετάζει παράλληλα την επιλογή περιεχομένου, την λεξικοποίηση, τον συνδυασμό προτάσεων, και μια περιορισμένη μορφή της παραγωγής αναφορικών εκφράσεων, σε αντίθεση με την αρχιτεκτονική διασωλήνωσης των περισσότερων συστημάτων Παραγωγής Φυσικής Γλώσσας, όπου τα τέσσερα στάδια εξετάζονται άπληστα το ένα μετά το άλλο. Πειράματα έδειξαν ότι το νέο μοντέλο επιτρέπει στο NaturalOWL να εκφράζει περισσότερες πληροφορίες ανά λέξη, το οποίο είναι χρήσιμο όταν ο χώρος είναι περιορισμένος (π.χ., στις διαφημίσεις), χωρίς κάποια αντιληπτή αλλοίωση στην ποιότητα των παραγόμενων κειμένων.Καθ’ όλη τη διατριβή, χρησιμοποιήθηκαν οντολογίες από διάφορες θεματικές περιοχές (π.χ., πολιτιστική κληρονομιά, ηλεκτρονικά προϊόντα, βιοπληροφορική). Χρησιμοποιώντας τις μεθόδους αυτής της διατριβής, οργανισμοί (π.χ., εταιρίες, βιβλιοθήκες, μουσεία) μπορούν να εκδώσουν πληροφορίες στον Ιστό που να διαβάζονται από υπολογιστές (π.χ., πληροφορίες που προέρχονται από βάσεις δεδομένων) και είναι διαθέσιμες σε πολλαπλές φυσικές γλώσσες (κείμενα που παράγονται αυτόματα από δεδομένα). Με αυτό τον τρόπο οι πληροφορίες γίνονται πιο εύκολα διαθέσιμες και σε υπολογιστές και σε τελικούς χρήστες.

The same assumptions that were essential in the document web are still applied for the Semantic Web (SW). They are radical notions of information sharing, which include [Allemang & Hendler, 2008]: (i) the Anyone can say Anything about Any topic (AAA) slogan; (ii) the open world assumption, i.e. there might exist more information out there that we are not aware of, and (iii) nonunique naming, meaning that different people can assign different names to the same concept. However, the Semantic Web differs from its predecessors in the sense that it intends to provide an environment not only for allowing information sharing but also for making it possible to have the effect of knowledge synergy. Nevertheless, this can lead to a chaotic scenario with disagreements and conflicts. We call an environment characterized by the above assumptions a Radical Information Sharing (RIS) environment. The challenge facing SW architects is therefore to avoid the natural chaos to which RIS environments are prone, and move to a state characterized by information sharing, cooperation and collaboration. According to [Allemang & Hendler, 2008], one solution to this challenge lies in modeling. Modeling is a simplified abstraction of some real world phenomenon, which, amongst other things, allows the organizing of information for the community use. Modeling supports information sharing in three ways: it provides a means for human communication, it provides a way for explaining conclusions, and it provides the managing of different viewpoints. There is an immense variety of modeling approaches. In this chapter we will go over a few of these approaches, showing how they can be used and their main limitations related to achieving the full potential of the Semantic Web. First we will show how to apply Unified Modeling Language (UML) [Rumbaugh et al., 1998] and Entity/Relationship (ER) [Chen, 1976] diagrams for modeling. Then we will present Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KR&R) [Brachman & Levesque, 2004] and describe how KR&R overcomes some of the limitations of UML and ER. Finally, we present Ontology and the Semantic Web [Berners-Lee, 1999] and discuss how it differs from and moves beyond the previous approaches.

Semantic annotations play an important role in semantics-aware service discovery, recommendation and composition. While existing approaches and tools focus on facilitating the development of semantic annotations on web services, the validation of the quality of annotations is largely overlooked. Meanwhile, the refinement of semantic annotations mostly goes through manual processes, which not only is time-consuming but also requires significant domain knowledge. To enhance the Quality of Semantic Annotation (QoSA), we have developed a technique to incrementally assess and correct semantic annotations of web services. Aiming at supporting web service interoperation, we have formalized the QoSA of input and output parameters. Based on such formalism, test cases are automatically generated to validate service annotations. Learned semantic instances are then accumulated to iteratively validate semantic annotations of other services. Furthermore, a three-phase optimization methodology including local-feedback, global-feedback, and global-propagate is developed to improve the QoSA by incrementally correcting inaccurate annotations. Experiments over a real-world web services repository have demonstrated that our technique can effectively improve QoSA of services, gaining a 78.68 percent improvement in input parameters annotations and identifying 36.47 percent inaccurate output parameters annotations. The proposed technique can be equipped at various service repositories to enhance service discovery and recommendation.

Folksonomies have become very popular as means to organize large sets of resources shared over the Social Web. The bottom-up nature of folksonomies has proved to be an interesting alternative to the current effort at semantic web ontologies since folksonomies provide a rich terminology generated by large user-communities. Besides, ontologies extracted from folksonomies can represent the intelligence collective of social communities. Such ontologies also represent a core element of a new feature of the Web, the Internet of Things. Many research studies have captured semantics in folksonomies, some of which have developed ontologies from folksonomy. However, the formal specific-domain ontology consisting of domain-dependent relations has not been researched yet. This paper introduces an algorithm for deriving a domain-specific ontology from folksonomy tags. The proposed algorithm starts by collecting a domain-specific terminology; next, discovering a pre-defined set of conceptual relationships among the domain terminologies. The evaluation of the algorithm, using a dataset extracted from BibSonomy, demonstrated that the algorithm could effectively learn domain ontologies consisting of domain concepts linked by meaningful and high accurate relationships. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm can help reduce common issues related to tag ambiguity and synonymous tags.

Objective: This paper focuses on integration of Semantic Web with E-Governance by developing a blog based portal for feedback to implement machine readable G2C in an automated way which is one of the targets of Government 3.0. Methods: We propose to change the representation system of blog based portals for linking data in accordance with a general schema to make it semantically meaningful for machines to perform queries. Citizen Feedback system is employed as a test case to extract raw data and associated metadata in an automated way without parsing any structure. Ontology is developed to help in identification of entities and interpret user comments. Findings: The proposed architecture will make it possible for machines to automatically extract and report the general feedback from comments given by a large community of users. Current Web 2.0 based portals show that for estimation of feedbacks, each blog needs to be evaluated either manually or by employing parsing techniques using Bag of Words approach. To implement our proposed approach, we have developed a social semantic-based networking system through which citizens give comments on the policies/decisions implemented or decided to be implemented by the Government. The system interprets machine-readable comments and generates a summary to report the overall public opinion on a certain government policy, hence reducing the gap between citizens and government - one of the primary objectives of eGovernment as Government 3.0. The use of W3C compliant framework in our implementation will lead to universal adaptability of system. It has been found that the proposed approach resulted in a more accurate and efficient analysis of user comments as compared to manual and NLP/Text Mining techniques within a restricted domain. There has been recently a growth of interest in developing the current machine-readable Web towards the next generation of machine-understandable Web - Semantic Web. The development of the Web to a global business was reasonably fast, whereas Semantic Web development has taken time from a plan to be used as the mainstream Web. It is also important to note that the use of Semantic Web would only be successful in small technologies. However, the goal of Semantic Web is to be used in big technologies and to be the mainstream Web. Some challenges may impede make further progress of Semantic Web. In this review paper, an overview of the current status and future needs of Semantic Web will be presented. Specifically, the challenges and needs of Semantic Web in the hope of shedding some light on the adoption or infusion of Semantic Web in the future will be discussed. Then, a critical evaluation of these challenges and needs will be presented. Semantic Web has a clear vision. It is moving, in line with this vision, towards overcoming the challenges and usability in real world applications.

The notion of validity fulfils a crucial role in legal theory. In the emerging Web 3.0, Semantic Web languages, legal ontologies, and normative multi-agent systems (nMAS) are designed to cover new regulatory needs. Conceptual models for complex regulatory systems shape the characteristic features of rules, norms, and principles in different ways. This article outlines one of such multilayered governance models, designed for the CAPER platform, and offers a definition of Semantic Web Regulatory Models (SWRM). It distinguishes between normative-SWRM and institutional-SWRM. It also compares existing principles in privacy by design, linked open data (LOD), legal information institutes (LII), and online dispute resolution (ODR). The article concludes by proposing the notion of Relational Law to summarize the ethical dimension of SWRM. Ethics are the only regulatory way to constitute a global space, out of the jurisdictional public domain set by national, international, or transnational law, and opposed to the private one.

Ontology-driven systems with reasoning capabilities in the legal field are now better understood. Legal concepts are not discrete, but make up a dynamic continuum between common sense terms, specific technical use, and professional knowledge, in an evolving institutional reality. Thus, the tension between a plural understanding of regulations and a more general understanding of law is bringing into view a new landscape in which general legal frameworks – grounded in well-known legal theories stemming from 20th-century c. legal positivism or sociological jurisprudence – are made compatible with specific forms of rights management on the Web. In this sense, Semantic Web tools are not only being designed for information retrieval, classification, clustering, and knowledge management. They can also be understood as regulatory tools, i.e. as components of the contemporary legal architecture, to be used by multiple stakeholders – front-line practitioners, policymakers, legal drafters, companies, market agents, and citizens. That is the issue broadly addressed in this Special Issue on the Semantic Web for the Legal Domain, overviewing the work carried out over the last fifteen years, and seeking to foster new research in this field, beyond the state of the art.

Key fields in the humanities, such as history, art and language, are central to a major transformation that is changing scholarly practice in these fields: the so-called Digital Humanities (DH). A fundamental question in DH is how humanities datasets can be represented digitally, in such a way that machines can process them, understand their meaning, facilitate their inquiry, and exchange them on the Web. In this paper, we survey current efforts within the Semantic Web and Linked Data, a family of Webcompatible knowledge representation formalisms and standards, to represent DH objects in quantitative history and symbolic music. We also argue that the technological gap between the Semantic Web and Linked Data, and DH data owners is currently too wide for effective access and consumption of these semantically enabled humanities data. To this end, we proposegrlc, a thin middleware that leverages currently existing queries on the Web (expressed in, e.g., SPARQL) to transparently build standard Web APIs that facilitate access to any Linked Data.

Industrial synergies join two or more organizations that initially functioned as independent economic actors—that may originate from different sectors—together in order to share resources and exchange by‐products for mutual environmental, financial, and social benefits for its participants. Industrial symbioses (ISs) are networks of industrial synergies that can be initiated and created over time in various manners. In practice, the initiation of an industrial synergy, and particularly the identification of by‐product compatibilities, relies on direct or facilitated knowledge and information sharing, which is essential for discovering industrial synergy opportunities. Beyond its potential contribution to facilitate knowledge and information sharing among organizations, the Social Semantic Web (SSW) also has the potential to facilitate the initiation of industrial synergy by systematically and automatically identifying and recommending by‐products exchange compatibilities to potential partners. This framework exploits the ability of the sematic web to enable the search for analogies between potential partners within a region or district and existing industrial synergies around the world. This paper proposes the Social Semantic Web for Industrial Synergies Initiation (SSWISI) framework for the initiation of industrial synergies, which is based on the Social Semantic Web. The framework proposed in this paper adopts the concept of Linked Open Data (LOD), which enables the sharing and exchanging of information with external systems. This feature distinguishes the proposed framework from the existing approaches in its initiation of industrial synergies.

As a media for sharing knowledge, forming communities with similar hobbies and interacting with friends, social networks are booming dramatically recently. The study on collective behaviors in social networks is a key to analyze community dynamics and network functionalities. Hence, it is significant and necessary to accurately extract and analyze these collective behaviors. At present, the semantic behaviors of any individual in semantic social networks can be extracted conveniently. However, how to automatically extract collective semantic behaviors, to a large scale, in social networks is still an open question. Our proposed collective semantic behavior extraction process works as follows: Firstly, as for the popular semantic social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter and QQ, it is convenient to extract semantic behaviors from any semantic information. Secondly, as similar behaviors will form a community spontaneously, the communities with similar extracted semantic behaviors can be determined with DeepWalk. Hence, as for a determined community, our proposed collective semantic behavior extraction approach can properly extract the collective semantic behaviors in social networks. The experimental results of our proposed approach executed on real semantic information show that our proposed approach can automatically extract collective semantic behaviors accurately.
