We present the first results of the JWST Emission Line Survey (JELS). Utilising the first NIRCam narrow-band imaging at 4.7$\mu$m, over 63 arcmin$^{2}$ in the PRIMER/COSMOS field, we identified 609 emission line galaxy candidates. From these, we robustly selected 35 H$\alpha$ star-forming galaxies at $z \sim 6.1$, with H$\alpha$ star-formation rates ($\rm{SFR_{H\alpha}}$) $\sim0.9-15\ \rm{M_{\odot} \ yr^{-1}}$. Combining our unique H$\alpha$ sample with the exquisite panchromatic data in the field, we explored their physical properties and star-formation histories, and compared these to a broad-band selected sample at $z\sim 6$ which offered vital new insights into the nature of high-redshift galaxies. UV-continuum slopes ($\beta$) were considerably redder for our H$\alpha$ sample ($\langle\beta\rangle\sim-1.92$) compared to the broad-band sample ($\langle\beta\rangle\sim-2.35$). This was not due to dust attenuation as our H$\alpha$ sample was relatively dust-poor (median $A_V=0.23$); instead, we argued the reddened slopes could be due to nebular continuum. We compared $\rm{SFR_{H\alpha}}$ and the UV-continuum-derived $\rm{SFR_{UV}}$ to SED-fitted measurements averaged over canonical timescales of 10 and 100 Myr ($\rm{SFR_{10}}$ and $\rm{SFR_{100}}$). We found an increase in recent SFR for our sample of H$\alpha$ emitters, particularly at lower stellar masses ($<10^9 \ \rm{M_{\odot}}$). We also found $\rm{SFR_{H\alpha}}$ strongly traced SFR averaged over 10 Myr timescales, whereas the UV-continuum over-predicts SFR on 100 Myr timescales at low stellar masses. These results point to our H$\alpha$ sample undergoing `bursty' star formation. Our F356W $z \sim 6$ sample showed a larger scatter in $\rm{SFR_{10}/SFR_{100}}$ across all stellar masses, which highlighted how narrow-band photometric selections of H$\alpha$ emitters are key to quantifying the burstiness of star-formation activity., Comment: Submitted to MRNAS; 27 pages, 19 figures. We present the JWST Emission Line Survey (JELS), a Cycle 1 JWST imaging programme exploiting the wavelength coverage and sensitivity of NIRCam to extend narrow-band rest-optical emission line selection into the epoch of reionization (EoR) for the first time, and to enable unique studies of the resolved ionised gas morphology in individual galaxies across cosmic history. The primary JELS observations comprise $\sim4.7\mu$m narrow-band imaging over $\sim63$ arcmin$^{2}$ designed to enable selection of H$\alpha$ emitters at $z\sim6.1$, as well as the selection of a host of novel emission-line samples including [OIII] at $z\sim8.3$ and Pa $\alpha/\beta$ at $z\sim1.5/2.8$. For the prime F466N and F470N narrow-band observations, the emission-line sensitivities achieved are up to $\sim2\times$ more sensitive than current slitless spectroscopy surveys (5$\sigma$ limits of 1.1-1.6$\times10^{-18}\text{erg s}^{-1}\text{cm}^{-2}$), corresponding to unobscured H$\alpha$ star-formation rates (SFRs) of 1-1.6 $\text{M}_{\odot}\,\text{yr}^{-1}$ at $z\sim6.1$ and extending emission-line selections in the EoR to fainter populations. Simultaneously, JELS also obtained F200W broadband and F212N narrow-band imaging (H$\alpha$ at $z\sim2.23$) that probes SFRs $\gtrsim5\times$ fainter than previous ground-based narrow-band studies ($\sim0.2 \text{M}_{\odot}\text{yr}^{-1}$), offering an unprecedented resolved view of star formation at cosmic noon. In this paper we describe the detailed JELS survey design, key data processing steps specific to the survey observations, and demonstrate the exceptional data quality and imaging sensitivity achieved. We then summarise the key scientific goals of JELS and present some early science results, including examples of spectroscopically confirmed H$\alpha$ and [OIII] emitters discovered by JELS that illustrate the novel parameter space probed., Comment: Submitted to MRNAS; 13 pages, 8 figures. Over the past decades, several studies have discovered a population of galaxies undergoing very strong star formation events, called extreme emission line galaxies (EELGs). In this work, we exploit the capabilities of the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS), a wide field multifilter survey, with 2000 square degrees observed. We use it to identify EELGs at low redshift by their [OIII]5007 emission line. We intend to provide with a more complete, deep, and less biased sample of local EELGs. We select objects with an excess of flux in the J-PLUS mediumband $J0515$ filter, which covers the [OIII] line at z$<$0.06. We remove contaminants (stars and higher redshift systems) using J-PLUS and WISE infrared data, with SDSS spectra as a benchmark. We perform spectral energy distribution fitting to estimate the properties of the galaxies: line fluxes, equivalent widths (EWs), masses, etc. We identify 466 EELGs at ${\rm z} < 0.06$ with [OIII] EW over 300 \text{\AA} and $r$-band mag. below 20, of which 411 were previously unknown. Most show compact morphologies, low stellar masses ($\log (M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) \sim {8.13}^{+0.61}_{-0.58}$), low dust extinction ($E(B-V)\sim{0.1}^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$), and very young bursts of star formation (${3.0}^{+2.7}_{-2.0}$ Myr). Our method is up to $\sim$ 20 times more efficient detecting EELGs per Mpc$^3$ than broadband surveys, and as complete as magnitude-limited spectroscopic surveys (and reaching fainter objects). The sample is not directly biased against strong H$\alpha$ emitters, in contrast with broadband surveys. We demonstrate the capability of J-PLUS to identify, following a clear selection process, a large sample of previously unknown EELGs showing unique properties. A fraction of them are likely similar to the first galaxies in the Universe, but at a much lower redshift, which makes them ideal targets for follow-up studies., Comment: 22 pages, 22 figures. MiniJPAS is a ~1 deg^2 imaging survey of the AEGIS field in 60 bands, performed to demonstrate the scientific potential of the upcoming JPAS survey. Full coverage of the 3800-9100 \AA range with 54 narrow and 6 broad optical filters allow for extremely accurate photo-z, which applied over 1000s of deg^2 will enable new applications of the photo-z technique such as measurement of baryonic acoustic oscillations. In this paper we describe the method used to obtain the photo-z included in the publicly available miniJPAS catalogue, and characterise the photo-z performance. We build 100 \AA resolution photo-spectra from the PSF-corrected forced-aperture photometry. Systematic offsets in the photometry are corrected by applying magnitude shifts obtained through iterative fitting with stellar population synthesis models. We compute photo-z with a customised version of LePhare, using a set of templates optimised for the J-PAS filter-set. We analyse the accuracy of miniJPAS photo-z and their dependence on multiple quantities using a subsample of 5,266 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts from SDSS and DEEP, that we find to be representative of the whole r<23 miniJPAS sample. Formal uncertainties for the photo-z that are calculated with the \delta\chi^2 method underestimate the actual redshift errors. The odds parameter has the stronger correlation with |Dz|, and accurately reproduces the probability of a redshift outlier (|Dz|>0.03) irrespective of the magnitude, redshift, or spectral type of the sources. We show that the two main summary statistics characterising the photo-z accuracy for a population of galaxies (snmad and \eta) can be predicted by the distribution of odds in such population, and use this to estimate them for the whole miniJPAS sample. At r<23 there are 17,500 galaxies/deg^2 with valid photo-z estimates, of which 4,200 are expected to have |Dz|<0.003 (abridged)., Comment: 25 pages, 32 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

We present ~0.15'' spatial resolution imaging of SHiZELS-14, a massive (M*~10^11 M_sol), dusty, star-forming galaxy at z=2.24. Our rest-frame ~1kpc-scale, matched-resolution data comprise four different widely used tracers of star formation: the H-alpha emission line (from SINFONI/VLT), rest-frame UV continuum (from HST F606W imaging), the rest-frame far-infrared (from ALMA), and the radio continuum (from JVLA). Although originally identified by its modest H-alpha emission line flux, SHiZELS-14 appears to be a vigorously star-forming (SFR~1000 M_sol/yr) example of a submillimeter galaxy, probably undergoing a merger. SHiZELS-14 displays a compact, dusty central starburst, as well as extended emission in $\rm{H}\alpha$ and the rest-frame optical and FIR. The UV emission is spatially offset from the peak of the dust continuum emission, and appears to trace holes in the dust distribution. We find that the dust attenuation varies across the spatial extent of the galaxy, reaching a peak of at least A_H-alpha~5 in the most dusty regions, although the extinction in the central starburst is likely to be much higher. Global star-formation rates inferred using standard calibrations for the different tracers vary from ~10-1000 M_sol/yr, and are particularly discrepant in the galaxy's dusty centre. Our goal is to estimate the star formation main sequence (SFMS) and the star formation rate density (SFRD) at z <= 0.017 (d < 75 Mpc) using the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) first data release, that probes 897.4 deg2 with twelve optical bands. We extract the Halpha emission flux of 805 local galaxies from the J-PLUS filter J0660, being the continuum level estimated with the other eleven J-PLUS bands, and the dust attenuation and nitrogen contamination corrected with empirical relations. Stellar masses (M), Halpha luminosities (L), and star formation rates (SFRs) were estimated by accounting for parameters covariances. Our sample comprises 689 blue galaxies and 67 red galaxies, classified in the (u-g) vs (g-z) color-color diagram, plus 49 AGN. The SFMS is explored at log M > 8 and it is clearly defined by the blue galaxies, with the red galaxies located below them. The SFMS is described as log SFR = 0.83 log M - 8.44. We find a good agreement with previous estimations of the SFMS, especially those based on integral field spectroscopy. The Halpha luminosity function of the AGN-free sample is well described by a Schechter function with log L* = 41.34, log phi* = -2.43, and alpha = -1.25. Our measurements provide a lower characteristic luminosity than several previous studies in the literature. The derived star formation rate density at d < 75 Mpc is log rho_SFR = -2.10 +- 0.11, with red galaxies accounting for 15% of the SFRD. Our value is lower than previous estimations at similar redshift, and provides a local reference for evolutionary studies regarding the star formation history of the Universe., Comment: 26 pages. Future astrophysical surveys such as J-PAS will produce very large datasets, which will require the deployment of accurate and efficient Machine Learning (ML) methods. In this work, we analyze the miniJPAS survey, which observed about 1 deg2 of the AEGIS field with 56 narrow-band filters and 4 ugri broad-band filters. We discuss the classification of miniJPAS sources into extended (galaxies) and point-like (e.g. stars) objects, a necessary step for the subsequent scientific analyses. We aim at developing an ML classifier that is complementary to traditional tools based on explicit modeling. In order to train and test our classifiers, we crossmatched the miniJPAS dataset with SDSS and HSC-SSP data. We trained and tested 6 different ML algorithms on the two crossmatched catalogs. As input for the ML algorithms we use the magnitudes from the 60 filters together with their errors, with and without the morphological parameters. We also use the mean PSF in the r detection band for each pointing. We find that the RF and ERT algorithms perform best in all scenarios. When analyzing the full magnitude range of 1521). The differences between the inherent stellar populations (SPs) of LAEs and LBGs are a key factor in understanding early galaxy formation and evolution. We have run a set of SP burst-like models for a sample of 1,558 sources at $3.4

From the approximately $\sim$3,500 planetary nebulae (PNe) discovered in our Galaxy, only 14 are known to be members of the Galactic halo. Nevertheless, a systematic search for halo PNe has never been performed. In this study, we present new photometric diagnostic tools to identify compact PNe in the Galactic halo by making use of the novel 12-filter system projects, J-PLUS (Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey) and S-PLUS (Southern-Photometric Local Universe Survey). We reconstructed the IPHAS (Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) Photometric H${\alpha}$ Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane) diagnostic diagram and propose four new ones using i) the J-PLUS and S-PLUS synthetic photometry for a grid of photo-ionisation models of halo PNe, ii) several observed halo PNe, as well as iii) a number of other emission-line objects that resemble PNe. All colour-colour diagnostic diagrams are validated using two known halo PNe observed by J-PLUS during the scientific verification phase and the first data release (DR1) of S-PLUS and the DR1 of J-PLUS. By applying our criteria to the DR1s ($\sim$1,190 deg$^2$), we identified one PN candidate. However, optical follow-up spectroscopy proved it to be a H II region belonging to the UGC 5272 galaxy. Here, we also discuss the PN and two H II galaxies recovered by these selection criteria. Finally, the cross-matching with the most updated PNe catalogue (HASH) helped us to highlight the potential of these surveys, since we recover all the known PNe in the observed area. The tools here proposed to identify PNe and separate them from their emission-line contaminants proved to be very efficient thanks to the combination of many colours, even when applied -like in the present work- to an automatic photometric search that is limited to compact PNe., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication at A&A

We present the photometric calibration of the twelve optical passbands observed by the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS). The proposed calibration method has four steps: (i) definition of a high-quality set of calibration stars using Gaia information and available 3D dust maps; (ii) anchoring of the J-PLUS gri passbands to the Pan-STARRS photometric solution, accounting for the variation of the calibration with the position of the sources on the CCD; (iii) homogenization of the photometry in the other nine J-PLUS filters using the dust de-reddened instrumental stellar locus in (X - r) versus (g - i) colours, where X is the filter to calibrate. The zero point variation along the CCD in these filters was estimated with the distance to the stellar locus. Finally, (iv) the absolute colour calibration was obtained with the white dwarf locus. We performed a joint Bayesian modelling of eleven J-PLUS colour-colour diagrams using the theoretical white dwarf locus as reference. This provides the needed offsets to transform instrumental magnitudes to calibrated magnitudes outside the atmosphere. The uncertainty of the J-PLUS photometric calibration, estimated from duplicated objects observed in adjacent pointings and accounting for the absolute colour and flux calibration errors, are ~19 mmag in u, J0378 and J0395, ~11 mmag in J0410 and J0430, and ~8 mmag in g, J0515, r, J0660, i, J0861, and z. We present an optimized calibration method for the large area multi-filter J-PLUS project, reaching 1-2% accuracy within an area of 1 022 square degrees without the need for long observing calibration campaigns or constant atmospheric monitoring. In a framework where galaxies mostly migrate on the colour-magnitude diagram from star-forming to quiescent, the green valley is considered a transitional galaxy stage. The details of the processes that drive galaxies from star-forming to passive systems still remain unknown. We developed a method that estimates empirically the star formation quenching times-scales of green valley galaxies, assuming an exponential decay model of the SFH and through a combination of narrow and broad bands from J-PLUS and GALEX. We correlate these quenching time-scales with the presence of bars. We find that the J-PLUS colours F0395-g and F0415-g are sensitive to different SFH, showing, a clear correlation with the Dn(4000) and H-delta,A spectral indices. We find that quenching time-scales obtained with our new approach are in agreement with those determined using spectral indices. We also find that galaxies with high bar probability tend to quench their star formation slowly. We conclude that: 1) J-PLUS filters can be used to measure quenching timescales in nearby green valley galaxies; and 2) the resulting star formation quenching time-scales are longer for barred green valley galaxies. Considering that the presence of a bar indicates that more violent processes (e.g., major mergers) are absent in host galaxies, we conclude that the presence of a bar can be used as a morphological signature for slow star formation quenching., Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) CO($J=2-1$) observations of two main-sequence star-forming galaxies at $z\sim1.47$ taken from the High-Z Emission Line Survey (HiZELS). These two systems have been previously reported to be molecular gas rich $f_{\rm H_2} \equiv M_{\rm H_2}/(M_{\rm H_2} + M_\star) \sim 0.8$. We carried out a follow-up study to resolve, at $\sim$kpc-scales, the CO emission. These new observations are combined with our earlier ALMA observations (sensitive to diffuse CO emission) and compared with our previous H$\alpha$-based study at matched spatial resolution. One target is marginally resolved in CO(2-1), showing complex dynamics with respect to the ionised gas traced by H$\alpha$. While the other source is spatially resolved, enabling a detailed exploration of its internal dynamical properties. In this system, both gaseous phases show similar spatial extension, rotation velocities and velocity dispersions ($V_{\rm rot} \sim \sigma_v \sim 100$\,km\,s$^{-1}$) suggesting a rotational velocity to velocity dispersion ratio consistent with unity. By comparing the ionized and molecular gas tracers through the use of a two-dimensional kinematic model, we estimate a median depletion time $\tau_{\rm dep}=2.3 \pm 1.2$\,Gyr for the galaxy as a whole. This value is in agreement with the average $\tau_{\rm dep}$ value observed in local star-forming galaxies at similar spatial scales. Using a thick-disk dynamical modelling, we derive a dynamical mass $M_{\rm dyn} = (1.59\pm0.19) \times 10^{11}$\,$M_\odot$ within $\approx 6$\,kpc. This suggests a dark matter fraction ($f_{\rm DM} \equiv M_{\rm DM}/M_{\rm dyn}$) of $0.59\pm0.10$, in agreement with the average $f_{\rm DM}$ value derived from stacked rotation curve analysis of galaxies at similar redshift range., Comment: 15 Pages, 9 Figures and 4 Tables. Ultracool dwarfs (UCDs) are objects with spectral types equal or later than M7. Most of them have been discovered using wide-field imaging surveys. The Virtual Observatory (VO) has proven to be of great utility to efficiently exploit these astronomical resources. We aim to validate a VO methodology designed to discover and characterize UCDs in the J-PLUS photometric survey. J-PLUS is a multiband survey carried out with the wide angle T80Cam optical camera mounted on the 0.83-m telescope JAST/T80 in the Observatorio Astrof\'isico de Javalambre. In this work we make use of the Internal Data Release (IDR) covering 528 deg$^2$. We complement J-PLUS photometry with other catalogues in the optical and IR using VOSA, a VO tool that estimates physical parameters from the spectral energy distribution fitting to collections of theoretical models. Objects identified as UCDs are distinguished from background M giants and highly reddened stars using parallaxes and proper motions from Gaia DR2. We identify 559 UCDs, ranging from i=16.2 to 22.4 mag, of which 187 are candidate UCDs not previously reported in the literature. This represents an increase in the number of known UCDs of about 50% in the studied region of the sky, particularly at the faint end of our sensitivity, which is interesting as reference for future wide and deep surveys such as Euclid. Three candidates constitute interesting targets for exoplanet surveys because of their proximity (<40 pc). We also analyze the kinematics of UCDs in our catalogue and find evidence that it is consistent with a Galactic thin-disk population, except for 6 objects that might be members of the thick disk. The results obtained validate the proposed methodology, which will be used in future J-PLUS and J-PAS releases. We present new deep ALMA and HST/WFC3 observations of MASOSA and VR7, two luminous Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) at $z=6.5$, for which the UV continuum level differ by a factor four. No IR dust continuum emission is detected in either, indicating little amounts of obscured star formation and/or high dust temperatures. MASOSA, with a UV luminosity M$_{1500}=-20.9$, compact size and very high Ly$\alpha$ EW$_{0}\approx145$ A, is undetected in [CII] to a limit of L$_{\rm [CII]}<2.2\times10^7$ L$_{\odot}$ implying a metallicity $Z\lesssim0.07 Z_{\odot}$. Intriguingly, our HST data indicates a red UV slope $\beta=-1.1\pm0.7$, at odds with the low dust content. VR7, which is a bright (M$_{1500}=-22.4$) galaxy with moderate color ($\beta=-1.4\pm0.3$) and Ly$\alpha$ EW$_0 = 34$ A, is clearly detected in [CII] emission (S/N=15). VR7's rest-frame UV morphology can be described by two components separated by $\approx1.5$ kpc and is globally more compact than the [CII] emission. The global [CII]-UV ratio indicates $Z\approx0.2 Z_{\odot}$, but there are large variations in the UV-[CII] ratio on kpc scales. We also identify diffuse, possibly outflowing, [CII]-emitting gas at $\approx 100$ km s$^{-1}$ with respect to the peak. VR7 appears assembling its components at a slightly more evolved stage than other luminous LAEs, with outflows already shaping its direct environment at $z\sim7$. Our results further indicate that the global [CII]-UV relation steepens at SFR $<30$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, naturally explaining why the [CII]-UV ratio is anti-correlated with Ly$\alpha$ EW in many, but not all, observed LAEs., Comment: Main text 19 pages, 16 figures. We present adaptive optics assisted integral field spectroscopy of 34 star-forming galaxies at $z$ = 0.8-3.3 selected from the HiZELS narrow-band survey. We measure the kinematics of the ionised interstellar medium on $\sim$1 kpc scales, and show that the galaxies are turbulent, with a median ratio of rotational to dispersion support of $v$/$\sigma$=0.82$\pm$0.13. We combine the dynamics with high-resolution rest-frame optical imaging and extract emission line rotation curves. We show that high-redshift star-forming galaxies follow a similar power-law trend in specific angular momentum with stellar mass as that of local late type galaxies. We exploit the high resolution of our data and examine the radial distribution of angular momentum within each galaxy by constructing total angular momentum profiles. Although the stellar mass of a typical star-forming galaxy is expected to grow by a factor $\sim$8 in the $\sim$5 Gyrs between $z$$\sim$3.3 and $z$$\sim$0.8, we show that the internal distribution of angular momentum becomes less centrally concentrated in this period i.e the angular momentum grows outwards. To interpret our observations, we exploit the EAGLE simulation and trace the angular momentum evolution of star forming galaxies from $z$$\sim$3 to $z$$\sim$0, identifying a similar trend of decreasing angular momentum concentration. This change is attributed to a combination of gas accretion in the outer disk, and feedback that preferentially arises from the central regions of the galaxy. We analyse maps of the spatially-resolved nebular emission of $\approx$1500 star-forming galaxies at $z\approx0.6$-$2.2$ from deep KMOS and MUSE observations to measure the average shape of their rotation curves. We use these to test claims for declining rotation curves at large radii in galaxies at $z\approx1$-$2$ that have been interpreted as evidence for an absence of dark matter. We show that the shape of the average rotation curves, and the extent to which they decline beyond their peak velocities, depends upon the normalisation prescription used to construct the average curve. Normalising in size by the galaxy stellar disk-scale length after accounting for seeing effects ($R_{\rm{d}}^{\prime}$), we construct stacked position-velocity diagrams that trace the average galaxy rotation curve out to $6R_{\rm{d}}^{\prime}$ ($\approx$13 kpc, on average). Combining these curves with average HI rotation curves for local systems, we investigate how the shapes of galaxy rotation curves evolve over $\approx$10 Gyr. The average rotation curve for galaxies binned in stellar mass, stellar surface mass density and/or redshift is approximately flat, or continues to rise, out to at least $6R_{\rm{d}}^{\prime}$. We find a trend between the outer slopes of galaxies' rotation curves and their stellar mass surface densities, with the higher surface density systems exhibiting flatter rotation curves. Drawing comparisons with hydrodynamical simulations, we show that the average shapes of the rotation curves for our sample of massive, star-forming galaxies at $z\approx0$-$2.2$ are consistent with those expected from $\Lambda$CDM theory and imply dark matter fractions within $6R_{\rm{d}}$ of at least $\approx60$ percent., Comment: 32 pages, 21 figures including appendices. We construct Tully-Fisher relations (TFRs), from large samples of galaxies with spatially-resolved H$\alpha$ emission maps from the K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) Redshift One Spectroscopic Survey (KROSS) at $z\approx1$. We compare these to data from the Sydney-Australian-Astronomical-Observatory Multi-object Integral-Field Spectrograph (SAMI) Galaxy Survey at $z\approx0$. We stringently match the data quality of the latter to the former, and apply identical analysis methods and sub-sample selection criteria to both to conduct a direct comparison of the absolute $K$-band magnitude and stellar mass TFRs at $z\approx1$ and $z\approx0$. We find that matching the quality of the SAMI data to that of KROSS results in TFRs that differ significantly in slope, zero-point and (sometimes) scatter in comparison to the corresponding original SAMI relations. These differences are in every case as large or larger than the differences between the KROSS $z\approx1$ and matched SAMI $z\approx0$ relations. Accounting for these differences, we compare the TFRs at $z\approx1$ and $z\approx0$. For disk-like, star-forming galaxies we find no significant difference in the TFR zero-points between the two epochs. This suggests the growth of stellar mass and dark matter in these types of galaxies is intimately linked over this $\approx8$ Gyr period., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The deep, near-infrared narrow-band survey HiZELS has yielded robust samples of H-alpha emitting star-forming galaxies within narrow redshift slices at z = 0.8, 1.47 and 2.23. In this paper, we distinguish the stellar mass and star-formation rate (SFR) dependence of the clustering of these galaxies. At high stellar masses (M/M_sol>2x10^10), where HiZELS selects galaxies close to the so-called star-forming main sequence, the clustering strength is observed to increase strongly with stellar mass (in line with the results of previous studies of mass-selected galaxy samples) and also with SFR. These two dependencies are shown to hold independently. At lower stellar masses, however, where HiZELS probes high specific SFR galaxies, there is little or no dependence of the clustering strength on stellar mass, but the dependence on SFR remains: high-SFR low-mass galaxies are found in more massive dark matter haloes than their lower SFR counterparts. We argue that this is due to environmentally driven star formation in these systems. We apply the same selection criteria to the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. We find that, in EAGLE, the high-SFR low-mass galaxies are central galaxies in more massive dark matter haloes, in which the high SFRs are driven by a (halo-driven) increased gas content., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures; accepted by MNRAS

We investigate the morphology of the [CII] emission in a sample of "normal" star-forming galaxies at $5

Combining the catalogue of galaxy morphologies in the COSMOS field and the sample of H$\alpha$ emitters at redshifts $z=0.4$ and $z=0.84$ of the HiZELS survey, we selected $\sim$ 220 star-forming bulgeless systems (S\'ersic index $n \leq 1.5$) at both epochs. We present their star formation properties and we investigate their contribution to the star formation rate function (SFRF) and global star formation rate density (SFRD) at $z < 1$. For comparison, we also analyse H$\alpha$ emitters with more structurally evolved morphologies that we split into two classes according to their S\'ersic index $n$: intermediate ($ 1.5 < n \leq 3 $) and bulge-dominated ($n > 3$). At both redshifts the SFRF is dominated by the contribution of bulgeless galaxies and we show that they account for more than 60% of the cosmic SFRD at $z < 1$. The decrease of the SFRD with redshift is common to the three morphological types but it is stronger for bulge-dominated systems. Star-forming bulgeless systems are mostly located in regions of low to intermediate galaxy densities ($\Sigma \sim 1 - 4$ Mpc$^{-2}$) typical of field-like and filament-like environments and their specific star formation rates (sSFRs) do not appear to vary strongly with local galaxy density. Only few bulgeless galaxies in our sample have high (sSFR $>$ 10$^{-9}$ yr$^{-1}$) and these are mainly low-mass systems. Above $M_* \sim 10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$ bulgeless are evolving at a "normal" rate (10$^{-9}$ yr$^{-1} <$ sSFR $<$10$^{-10}$ yr$^{-1}$) and in the absence of an external trigger (i.e. mergers/strong interactions) they might not be able to develop a central classical bulge., Comment: 14 page, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present spectroscopic follow-up observations of CR7 with ALMA, targeted at constraining the infrared (IR) continuum and [CII]$_{158 \mu \rm m}$ line-emission at high spatial resolution matched to the HST/WFC3 imaging. CR7 is a luminous Ly$\alpha$ emitting galaxy at $z=6.6$ that consists of three separated UV-continuum components. Our observations reveal several well-separated components of [CII] emission. The two most luminous components in [CII] coincide with the brightest UV components (A and B), blue-shifted by $\approx 150$ km s$^{-1}$ with respect to the peak of Ly$\alpha$ emission. Other [CII] components are observed close to UV clumps B and C and are blue-shifted by $\approx300$ and $\approx80$ km s$^{-1}$ with respect to the systemic redshift. We do not detect FIR continuum emission due to dust with a 3$\sigma$ limiting luminosity L$_{\rm IR} (T_d = 35 \rm \, K) < 3.1\times10^{10}$ L$_{\odot}$. This allows us to mitigate uncertainties in the dust-corrected SFR and derive SFRs for the three UV clumps A, B and C of 28, 5 and 7 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. All clumps have [CII] luminosities consistent within the scatter observed in the local relation between SFR and L$_{\rm [CII]}$, implying that strong Ly$\alpha$ emission does not necessarily anti-correlate with [CII] luminosity. Combining our measurements with the literature, we show that galaxies with blue UV slopes have weaker [CII] emission at fixed SFR, potentially due to their lower metallicities and/or higher photoionisation. Comparison with hydrodynamical simulations suggests that CR7's clumps have metallicities of $0.1<\rm Z/Z_{\odot}<0.2$. The observed ISM structure of CR7 indicates that we are likely witnessing the build up of a central galaxy in the early Universe through complex accretion of satellites., Comment: 17 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

We analyse the velocity dispersion properties of 472 z~0.9 star-forming galaxies observed as part of the KMOS Redshift One Spectroscopic Survey (KROSS). The majority of this sample is rotationally dominated (83 +/- 5% with v_C/sigma_0 > 1) but also dynamically hot and highly turbulent. After correcting for beam smearing effects, the median intrinsic velocity dispersion for the final sample is sigma_0 = 43.2 +/- 0.8 km/s with a rotational velocity to dispersion ratio of v_C/sigma_0 = 2.6 +/- 0.1. To explore the relationship between velocity dispersion, stellar mass, star formation rate and redshift we combine KROSS with data from the SAMI survey (z~0.05) and an intermediate redshift MUSE sample (z~0.5). While there is, at most, a weak trend between velocity dispersion and stellar mass, at fixed mass there is a strong increase with redshift. At all redshifts, galaxies appear to follow the same weak trend of increasing velocity dispersion with star formation rate. Our results are consistent with an evolution of galaxy dynamics driven by disks that are more gas rich, and increasingly gravitationally unstable, as a function of increasing redshift. Finally, we test two analytic models that predict turbulence is driven by either gravitational instabilities or stellar feedback. We present dynamical measurements from the KMOS (K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph) Deep Survey (KDS), which is comprised of 77 typical star-forming galaxies at z $\simeq$ 3.5 in the mass range 9.0 < log(M$_{\star}$/M$_{\odot}$) < 10.5. These measurements constrain the internal dynamics, the intrinsic velocity dispersions ({\sigma}$_{int}$) and rotation velocities (V$_{C}$) of galaxies in the high redshift Universe. The mean velocity dispersion of the galaxies in our sample is {\sigma}$_{int}$ = $70.8^{+3.3}_{-3.1}$ km s$^{-1}$, revealing that the increasing average {\sigma}$_{int}$ with increasing redshift, reported for z $\lesssim2$, continues out to z $\simeq$ 3.5. Only 34 $\pm$ 8% of our galaxies are rotation-dominated (V$_{C}$/{\sigma}$_{int}$ > 1), with the sample average V$_{C}$/{\sigma}$_{int}$ value much smaller than at lower redshift. After carefully selecting comparable star-forming samples at multiple epochs, we find that the rotation-dominated fraction evolves with redshift with a z$^{-0.2}$ dependence. The rotation-dominated KDS galaxies show no clear offset from the local rotation velocity-stellar mass (i.e. V$_{C}$-M$_{\star}$) relation, although a smaller fraction of the galaxies are on the relation due to the increase in the dispersion-dominated fraction. These observations are consistent with a simple equilibrium model picture, in which random motions are boosted in high redshift galaxies by a combination of the increasing gas fractions, accretion efficiency, specific star-formation rate and stellar feedback and which may provide significant pressure support against gravity on the galactic disk scale., Comment: main body 25 pages, 8 figures

We present clustering analyses of identically-selected star-forming galaxies in 3 narrow redshift slices (at z=0.8, z=1.47 and z=2.23), from HiZELS, a deep, near-infrared narrow-band survey. The HiZELS samples span the peak in the cosmic star-formation rate density, identifying typical star-forming galaxies at each epoch. Narrow-band samples have well-defined redshift distributions and are therefore ideal for clustering analyses. We quantify the clustering of the three samples, and of H-alpha luminosity-selected subsamples, initially using simple power law fits to the two-point correlation function. We extend this work to link the evolution of star-forming galaxies and their host dark matter halos over cosmic time using sophisticated dark matter halo models. We find that the clustering strength, r0, and the bias of galaxy populations relative to the clustering of dark matter increase linearly with H-alpha luminosity (and, by implication, star-formation rate) at all three redshifts, as do the host dark matter halo masses of the HiZELS galaxies. The typical galaxies in our samples are star-forming centrals, residing in halos of mass M_halo ~ a few times 10^12M_solar. We find a remarkably tight redshift-independent relation between the H-alpha luminosity scaled by the characteristic luminosity, L(H-alpha)/L(H-alpha)*(z), and the minimum host dark matter halo mass of central galaxies. This reveals that the dark matter halo environment is a strong driver of galaxy star-formation rate and therefore of the evolution of the star-formation rate density in the Universe., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures. We present dynamical measurements for 586 H-alpha detected star-forming galaxies from the KMOS (K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph) Redshift One Spectroscopic Survey (KROSS). The sample represents typical star-forming galaxies at this redshift (z=0.6-1.0), with a median star formation rate of ~7 Msol/yr and a stellar mass range of log[M/Msol]~9-11. We find that the rotation velocity-stellar mass relationship (the inverse of the Tully-Fisher relationship) for our rotationally-dominated sources (v/sigma>1) has a consistent slope and normalisation as that observed for z=0 disks. In contrast, the specific angular momentum (j; angular momentum divided by stellar mass), is ~0.2-0.3 dex lower on average compared to z=0 disks. The specific angular momentum scales as M^[0.6+/-0.2], consistent with that expected for dark matter (i.e., proportional to M^[2/3]). We find that z~0.9 star-forming galaxies have decreasing specific angular momentum with increasing Sersic index. Visually, the sources with the highest specific angular momentum, for a given mass, have the most disk-dominated morphologies. This implies that an angular momentum-mass-morphology relationship, similar to that observed in local massive galaxies, is already in place by z~1., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present adaptive optics (AO) assisted SINFONI integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy of eleven H$\alpha$ emitting galaxies selected from the High-Z Emission Line Survey (HiZELS). We obtain spatially resolved dynamics on ~kpc-scales of star-forming galaxies (stellar mass M$_\star$ = 10$^{9.5-10.5}$ M$_\odot$ and star formation rate SFR = 2-30 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) near the peak of the cosmic star-formation rate history. Combining these observations with our previous SINFONI-HiZELS campaign, we construct a sample of twenty homogeneously selected galaxies with IFU AO-aided observations -- the `SHiZELS' survey, with roughly equal number of galaxies per redshift slice, at $z$ = 0.8, 1.47, and 2.23. We measure the dynamics and identify the major kinematic axis by modelling their velocity fields to extract rotational curves and infer their inclination-corrected rotational velocities. We explore the stellar mass Tully-Fisher relationship, finding that galaxies with higher velocity dispersions tend to deviate from this relation. Using kinemetry analyses we find that galaxy interactions might be the dominant mechanism controlling the star-formation activity at $z$ = 2.23 but they become gradually less important down to $z$ = 0.8. Metallicity gradients derived from the [NII]/H$\alpha$ emission line ratio show a median negative gradient for the SHiZELS survey of $\Delta$log(O/H)/$\Delta$R = -0.026$\pm$0.008 dex kpc$^{-1}$. We find that metal-rich galaxies tend to show negative gradients, whereas metal-poor galaxies tend to exhibit positive metallicity gradients. This result suggests that the accretion of pristine gas in the periphery of galaxies plays an important role in replenishing the gas in `typical' star-forming galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 16 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables

We investigate the properties of $z$=2.23 H$\alpha$ and [OIII]$\lambda$5007 emitters using the narrow-band-selected samples obtained from the High-$z$ Emission Line Survey (HiZELS: Sobral et al. 2013). We construct two samples of the H$\alpha$ and [OIII] emitters and compare their integrated physical properties. We find that the distribution of stellar masses, dust extinction, star formation rates (SFRs), and specific SFRs, is not statistically different between the two samples. When we separate the full galaxy sample into three subsamples according to the detections of the H$\alpha$ and/or [OIII] emission lines, most of the sources detected with both H$\alpha$ and [OIII] show ${\rm log(sSFR_{UV})}$$\gtrsim$-9.5. The comparison of the three subsamples suggests that sources with strong [OIII] line emission tend to have the highest star-forming activity out all galaxies that we study. We argue that the [OIII] emission line can be used as a tracer of star-forming galaxies at high redshift, and that it is especially useful to investigate star-forming galaxies at $z$$>$3, for which H$\alpha$ emission is no longer observable from the ground., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Large Early Galaxy Census (LEGA-C) is a Public Spectroscopic Survey of $\sim3200$ $K$-band selected galaxies at redshifts $z=0.6-1.0$ with stellar masses M_star > 1e10M_sun, conducted with VIMOS on ESO's Very Large Telescope. The survey is embedded in the COSMOS field ($R.A. = 10h00$; $Dec.=+2\deg$). The 20-hour long integrations produce high-$S/N$ continuum spectra that reveal ages, metallicities and velocity dispersions of the stellar populations. LEGA-C's unique combination of sample size and depth will enable us for the first time to map the stellar content at large look-back time, across galaxies of different types and star-formation activity. Observations started in December 2014 and are planned to be completed by mid 2018, with early data releases of the spectra and value-added products. Content: We present the results from $Suzaku$ observations of the merging cluster of galaxies CIZA J2242.8+5301 at $z$=0.192. Aims. To study the physics of gas heating and particle acceleration in cluster mergers, we investigated the X-ray emission from CIZA J2242.8+5301, which hosts two giant radio relics in the northern/southern part of the cluster. Methods. We analyzed data from three-pointed Suzaku observations of CIZA J2242.8+5301 to derive the temperature distribution in four different directions. Results: The Intra-Cluster Medium (ICM) temperature shows a remarkable drop from 8.5$_{-0.6}^{+0.8}$ keV to 2.7$_{-0.4}^{+0.7}$ keV across the northern radio relic. The temperature drop is consistent with a Mach number ${\cal M}_n=2.7^{+0.7}_{-0.4}$ and a shock velocity $v_{shock:n}=2300_{-400}^{+700}\rm\,km\,s^{-1}$. We also confirm the temperature drop across the southern radio relic. However, the ICM temperature beyond this relic is much higher than beyond the northern one, which gives a Mach number ${\cal M}_s=1.7^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ and shock velocity $v_{shock:s}=2040_{-410}^{+550}\rm \,km\,s^{-1}$. These results agree with other systems showing a relationship between the radio relics and shock fronts which are induced by merging activity. We compare the X-ray derived Mach numbers with the radio derived Mach numbers from the radio spectral index under the assumption of diffusive shock acceleration in the linear test particle regime. For the northern radio relic, the Mach numbers derived from X-ray and radio observations agree with each other. Based on the shock velocities, we estimate that CIZA J2242.8+5301 is observed approximately 0.6 Gyr after core passage. CR7 is the brightest $z=6.6 \, {\rm Ly}\alpha$ emitter (LAE) known to date, and spectroscopic follow-up by Sobral et al. (2015) suggests that CR7 might host Population (Pop) III stars. We examine this interpretation using cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. Several simulated galaxies show the same "Pop III wave" pattern observed in CR7. However, to reproduce the extreme CR7 ${\rm Ly}\alpha$/HeII1640 line luminosities ($L_{\rm \alpha/He II}$) a top-heavy IMF and a massive ($>10^{7}{\rm M}_{\odot}$) PopIII burst with age $<2$ Myr are required. Assuming that the observed properties of ${\rm Ly}\alpha$ and HeII emission are typical for Pop III, we predict that in the COSMOS/UDS/SA22 fields, 14 out of the 30 LAEs at $z=6.6$ with $L_{\alpha} >10^{43.3}{\rm erg}\,{\rm s}^{-1}$ should also host Pop III stars producing an observable $L_{\rm He II}>10^{42.7}{\rm erg}\,{\rm s}^{-1}$. As an alternate explanation, we explore the possibility that CR7 is instead powered by accretion onto a Direct Collapse Black Hole (DCBH). Our model predicts $L_{\alpha}$, $L_{\rm He II}$, and X-ray luminosities that are in agreement with the observations. In any case, the observed properties of CR7 indicate that this galaxy is most likely powered by sources formed from pristine gas. We present a detailed multi-wavelength study (from rest-frame UV to far-IR) of narrow-band (NB) selected, star-forming (SF) H$\alpha$ emitters (HAEs) at $z \sim 2.23$ taken from the High Redshift(Z) Emission Line Survey (HiZELS). We find that HAEs have similar SED-derived properties and colors to $sBzK$ galaxies and probe a well-defined portion of the SF population at $z \sim 2$. This is not true for Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs), which are strongly biased towards blue, less massive galaxies (missing a significant percentage of the SF population). Combining our H$\alpha$ observations with matched, existing Ly$\alpha$ data we determine that the Ly$\alpha$ escape fraction ($f_{\rm esc}$) is low (only $\sim$ 4.5\% of HAEs show Ly$\alpha$ emission) and decreases with increasing dust attenuation, UV continuum slope, stellar mass, and star formation rate (SFR). This suggests that Ly$\alpha$ preferentially escapes from blue galaxies with low dust attenuation. However, a small population of red and massive LAEs is also present in agreement with previous works. This indicates that dust and Ly$\alpha$ are not mutually exclusive. Using different and completely independent measures of the total SFR we show that the H$\alpha$ emission is an excellent tracer of star formation at $z \sim 2$ with deviations typically lower than 0.3 dex for individual galaxies. We find that the slope and zero-point of the HAE main-sequence (MS) at $z \sim 2$ strongly depend on the dust correction method used to recover SFR, although they are consistent with previous works when similar assumptions are made., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We describe the far-infrared (FIR; rest-frame 8--1000\mu m) properties of a sample of 443 H\alpha-selected star-forming galaxies in the COSMOS and UDS fields detected by the HiZELS imaging survey. Sources are identified using narrow-band filters in combination with broad-band photometry to uniformly select H\alpha\ (and [OII] if available) emitters in a narrow redshift slice at z = 1.47+/-0.02. We use a stacking approach in Spitzer, Herschel (from PEP and HerMES surveys) and AzTEC images to describe their typical FIR properties. We find that HiZELS galaxies with observed H\alpha\ luminosities of ~ 10^{8.1-9.1} Lo have bolometric FIR luminosities of typical LIRGs, L_FIR ~ 10^{11.48+/-0.05} Lo. Combining the H\alpha\ and FIR luminosities, we derive median SFR = 32+/-5 Mo/yr and H\alpha\ extinctions of A(H\alpha) = 1.0+/-0.2 mag. Perhaps surprisingly, little difference is seen in typical HiZELS extinction levels compared to local star-forming galaxies. We confirm previous empirical stellar mass (M*) to A(H\alpha) relations and the little or no evolution up to z = 1.47. For HiZELS galaxies, we provide an empirical parametrisation of the SFR as a function of (u-z)_rest colours and 3.6\mu m photometry. We find that the observed H\alpha\ luminosity is a dominant SFR tracer when (u-z)_rest ~< 0.9 mag or when 3.6\mu m photometry > 22 mag (Vega) or when M* < 10^9.7 Mo. We do not find any correlation between the [OII]/H\alpha\ and FIR luminosity, suggesting that this emission line ratio does not trace the extinction of the most obscured star-forming regions. The luminosity-limited HiZELS sample tends to lie above of the so-called `main sequence' for star-forming galaxies, especially at low M*. This work suggests that obscured star formation is linked to the assembly of M*, with deeper potential wells in massive galaxies providing dense, heavily obscured environments in which stars can form rapidly., Comment: abridged abstract

Observations of the high redshift Universe through narrow-band filters have proven very successful in the last decade. The 4-meter VISTA telescope, equipped with the wide-field camera VIRCAM, offers a major step forward in wide-field near-infrared imaging, and in order to utilise VISTA's large field-of-view and sensitivity, the Dark Cosmology Centre provided a set of 16 narrow-band filters for VIRCAM. These NB118 filters are centered at a wavelength near 1.19 micron in a region with few airglow emission lines. The filters allow the detection of Halpha emitters at z = 0.8, Hbeta and [OIII] emitters at z ~ 1.4, [OII] emitters at z = 2.2, and Ly-alpha emitters at z = 8.8. Based on guaranteed time observations of the COSMOS field we here present a detailed description and characterization of the filters and their performance. In particular we provide sky-brightness levels and depths for each of the 16 detector/filter sets and find that some of the filters show signs of some red-leak. We identify a sample of 2 x 10^3 candidate emission-line objects in the data. Cross-correlating this sample with a large set of galaxies with known spectroscopic redshifts we determine the "in situ" passbands of the filters and find that they are shifted by about 3.5-4 nm (corresponding to 30% of the filter width) to the red compared to the expectation based on the laboratory measurements. Finally, we present an algorithm to mask out persistence in VIRCAM data. We present results from a ~100 ks Chandra observation of the 2QZ Cluster 1004+00 structure at z = 2.23 (hereafter, 2QZ Clus). 2QZ Clus was originally identified as an overdensity of four optically-selected QSOs at z = 2.23 within a 15x15 arcmin^2 region. Narrow-band imaging in the near-IR revealed that the structure contains an additional overdensity of 22 z = 2.23 Halpha-emitting galaxies (HAEs), resulting in 23 unique z = 2.23 HAEs/QSOs. Our Chandra observations reveal that 3 HAEs in addition to the 4 QSOs harbor powerfully accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs), with 2-10 keV luminosities of ~(8-60) x 10^43 ergs/s and X-ray spectral slopes consistent with unobscured AGN. Using a large comparison sample of 210 HAEs in Chandra-COSMOS (C-COSMOS), we find suggestive evidence that the AGN fraction increases with local HAE galaxy density. The 2QZ Clus HAEs reside in a moderately overdense environment (a factor of ~2 times over the field), and after excluding optically-selected QSOs, we find the AGN fraction is a factor of ~3.5^+3.8_-2.2 times higher than C-COSMOS HAEs in similar environments. Using stacking analyses of the Chandra data and Herschel SPIRE observations at 250 um, we respectively estimate mean SMBH accretion rates (Mdot) and star-formation rates (SFRs) for the 2QZ Clus and C-COSMOS samples. We find that the mean 2QZ Clus HAE stacked 2-10 keV luminosity is QSO-like (~6-10 x 10^43 ergs/s), and the implied Mdot/SFR \sim (1.6-3.2) x10^-3 is broadly consistent with the local MBH/M* relation and z ~ 2 X-ray selected AGN. The C-COSMOS HAEs are on average an order of magnitude less X-ray luminous and have Mdot/SFR \sim (0.2-0.4) x10^-3, comparable to z ~ 1-2 star-forming galaxies with similar mean X-ray luminosities. We estimate that a periodic QSO phase with duty cycle ~2-8% would be sufficient to bring the star-forming galaxies onto the local MBH/M* relation., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

MOONS is a new conceptual design for a Multi-Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph for the Very Large Telescope (VLT), selected by ESO for a Phase A study. The baseline design consists of 1000 fibers deployable over a field of view of 500 square arcmin, the largest patrol field offered by the Nasmyth focus at the VLT. The total wavelength coverage is 0.8um-1.8um and two resolution modes: medium resolution and high resolution. In the medium resolution mode (R=4,000-6,000) the entire wavelength range 0.8um-1.8um is observed simultaneously, while the high resolution mode covers simultaneously three selected spectral regions: one around the CaII triplet (at R=8,000) to measure radial velocities, and two regions at R=20,000 one in the J-band and one in the H-band, for detailed measurements of chemical abundances. The grasp of the 8.2m Very Large Telescope (VLT) combined with the large multiplex and wavelength coverage of MOONS - extending into the near-IR - will provide the observational power necessary to study galaxy formation and evolution over the entire history of the Universe, from our Milky Way, through the redshift desert and up to the epoch of re-ionization at z>8-9. At the same time, the high spectral resolution mode will allow astronomers to study chemical abundances of stars in our Galaxy, in particular in the highly obscured regions of the Bulge, and provide the necessary follow-up of the Gaia mission. Such characteristics and versatility make MOONS the long-awaited workhorse near-IR MOS for the VLT, which will perfectly complement optical spectroscopy performed by FLAMES and VIMOS., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. (abridged) We present a clustering analysis of 370 high-confidence H-alpha emitters (HAEs) at z=2.23. The HAEs are detected in the Hi-Z Emission Line Survey (HiZELS), a large-area blank field 2.121um narrowband survey using the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) Wide Field Camera (WFCAM). Averaging the two-point correlation function of HAEs in two ~1 degree scale fields (United Kingdom Infrared Deep Sky Survey/Ultra Deep Survey [UDS] and Cosmological Evolution Survey [COSMOS] fields) we find a clustering amplitude equivalent to a correlation length of r_0=3.7+/-0.3 Mpc/h for galaxies with star formation rates of >7 M_sun/yr. The data are well-fitted by the expected correlation function of Cold Dark Matter, scaled by a bias factor: omega_HAE=b^2 omega_DM where b=2.4^{+0.1}_{-0.2}. The corresponding 'characteristic' mass for the halos hosting HAEs is log(M_h/[M_sun/h])=11.7+/-0.1. Comparing to the latest semi-analytic GALFORM predictions for the evolution of HAEs in a LCDM cosmology, we find broad agreement with the observations, with GALFORM predicting a HAE correlation length of ~4 Mpc/h. Motivated by this agreement, we exploit the simulations to construct a parametric model of the halo occupation distribution (HOD) of HAEs, and use this to fit the observed clustering. Our best-fitting HOD can adequately reproduce the observed angular clustering of HAEs, yielding an effective halo mass and bias in agreement with that derived from the scaled omega_DM fit, but with the relatively small sample size the current data provide a poor constraint on the HOD. Our results support the broad picture that 'typical' (~L*) star-forming galaxies have been hosted by dark matter haloes with M_h<10^12 M_sun/h since z~2, but with a broad occupation distribution and clustering that is likely to be a strong function of luminosity., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present the results of a narrow-band (H2S1, 2.121/0.021um) imaging search with WFCAM/UKIRT for H-alpha emitters around several potential signposts of rare (10^-7-10^-8 Mpc^-3) over-dense regions at z=2.23: an over-density of QSOs (2QZ cluster), a powerful, high-redshift radio galaxy (HzRG), and a concentration of submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) and optically faint radio galaxies (OFRGs). In total, we detect 137 narrow-band emitter candidates down to emission-line fluxes of 0.5-1 x 10^-16 erg s^-1 cm^-2, across a total area of 0.56 sq. degrees (2.1 x 10^5 comoving Mpc at z=2.23) in these fields. The BzK colours of the emitters suggest that at least 80% of our sample are likely to be H-alpha emitters (HAEs) at z=2.23. This is one of the largest HAE samples known at z>2. We find modest (~3-sigma) local over-densities of emitters associated with all the three targets. In the 2QZ cluster field, the emitters show a striking filamentary structure connecting four of the z=2.23 QSOs extending over 30Mpc (comoving). In the HzRG and SMG/OFRG fields, the structures appear to be smaller and seen only in the vicinities of the targets. The K-band magnitudes and the H-alpha equivalent widths of the emitters are weakly correlated with the over-density of the emitters: emitters in over-dense region are more evolved systems compared to those in under-dense regions at z=2.23. We find several examples of extended HAEs in our target fields, including a striking example with a spatial extent of 7.5 arcsec (60 kpc at z=2.23) in the 2QZ field, suggesting that these are relatively common in high-density regions. We conclude that narrow-band H-alpha surveys are efficient routes to map over-dense regions at high-z and thus to understand the relation between the growth of galaxies and their surrounding large-scale structures., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures, submitted to MNRAS

New results are presented, as part of the Hi-z Emission Line Survey (HiZELS), from the largest area survey to date (1.4 sq.deg) for Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) at z~9. The survey, which is primarily targeting H-alpha emitters at z<3, uses the Wide Field CAMera on the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope and a custom narrow-band filter in the J band and reaches a Lyman-alpha luminosity limit of ~10^43.8 erg/s over a co-moving volume of 1.12x10^6 Mpc^3 at z=8.96+-0.06. Only 2 candidates were found out of 1517 line emitters and those were rejected as LAEs after follow-up observations. The limit on the space density of bright LAEs is improved by 3 orders of magnitude, consistent with suppression of the bright end of the Lyman-alpha luminosity function beyond z~6. Combined with upper limits from smaller but deeper surveys, this rules out some of the most extreme models for high-redshift LAEs. The potential contamination of future narrow-band Lyman-alpha surveys at z>7 by Galactic brown dwarf stars is also examined, leading to the conclusion that such contamination may well be significant for searches at 7.7

New results from a large survey of H-alpha emission-line galaxies at z=0.84 using WFCAM/UKIRT and a custom narrow-band filter in the J band are presented as part of the HiZELS survey. Reaching an effective flux limit of 1e-16 erg/s/cm^2 in a comoving volume of 1.8e5 Mpc^3, this represents the largest and deepest survey of its kind ever done at z~1. There are 1517 potential line emitters detected across 1.4 sq.deg of the COSMOS and UKIDSS UDS fields, of which 743 are selected as H-alpha emitters. These are used to calculate the H-alpha luminosity function, which is well-fitted by a Schechter function with phi*=10^(-1.92+-0.10) Mpc^-3, L*=10^(42.26+-0.05)erg/s, and alpha=-1.65+-0.15. The integrated star formation rate density (SFRD) at z=0.845 is 0.15+-0.01 M_sun/yr/Mpc^3. The results robustly confirm a strong evolution of SFRD from the present day out to z~1 and then flattening to z~2, using a single star-formation indicator. Out to z~1, both the characteristic luminosity and space density of the H-alpha emitters increase significantly; at higher redshifts, L* continues to increase, but phi* decreases. The z=0.84 H-alpha emitters are mostly disk galaxies (82+-3%), while 28+-4% of the sample show signs of merger activity and contribute ~20% to the total SFRD. Irregulars and mergers dominate the H-alpha luminosity function above L*, while disks are dominant at fainter luminosities. These results demonstrate that it is the evolution of 'normal' disk galaxies that drives the strong increase in the SFRD from the current epoch to z~1, although the continued strong evolution of L* beyond z=1 suggests an increasing importance of merger activity at higher redshifts., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures.
