Abstract

The subsistence practices of Holocene communities living in the Nile Valley of Central Sudan are comparatively little known. Recent excavations at Khor Shambat, Sudan, have yielded well-defined Mesolithic and Neolithic stratigraphy. Here, for the first time, archaeozoological, palaeobotanical, phytolith and dental calculus studies are combined with lipid residue analysis of around 100 pottery fragments and comparative analysis of faunal remains and organic residues. This holistic approach provides valuable information on changes in adaptation strategies, from Mesolithic hunter-gatherers to Neolithic herders exploiting domesticates. A unique picture is revealed of the natural environment and human subsistence, demonstrating the potential wider value of combining multiple methods. Abstract

Shell middens are common finds recorded at Polish archaeological sites dating from the Neolithic to Iron Age; however, very little is known about the acquisition and exploitation of mussels by prehistoric communities. An archaeological feature discovered recently at Kiekrz (western Poland) has provided us with a rare opportunity to conduct complex research on a representative and large sample. Our study aimed to recognise the function of the pit, the character of the shell deposit, its chronology, the season of shell collection and environmental conditions that prevailed in the settlement's time. The investigations included multi-faceted analyses of archaeological finds (pottery, animal bones, and mollusc shells) and charcoal remains, δ13C and δ18O shell composition, and C14 dating. The results of the research indicate that the molluscs of Unio were deliberately collected for food c. 1500 cal. BC. They were probably harvested during late summer from the nearby lake. Then the molluscs were steamed in a kind of earth oven. Pine and oak wood from the immediate vicinity was used as firewood during the molluscs processing. Abstract

The region of the Lubusz Lakeland in western Poland where there are a lot of subglacial channels provides opportunity for multi-proxy palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. None of them has not been the object of a specific study. The developmental history of the palaeolakes and their vicinity in the subglacial trough Jordanowo-Niesulice, spanning the Late Glacial and beginning of the Holocene, was investigated using geological research, lithological and geomorphological analysis, geochemical composition, palynological and archaeological research, OSL and AMS-radiocarbon dating. Geological research shows varied morphology of subglacial channel where at least two different reservoirs functioned in the end of the Last Glacial period and at the beginning of the Holocene. Mostly during the Bølling-Allerød interval and at the beginning of the Younger Dryas there took place melting of buried ice-blocks which preserved the analysied course of the Jordanowo-Niesulice trough. The level of water, and especially depth of reservoirs underwent also changes. Palynological analysis shows very diversified course of the Allerød interval.

Abstract

With the increasing availability of data, geoscienceprovides many methods to model the spatial extentof various phenomena.Acquiring representative, highquality data is the most important criterion to assess thevalue of any spatial analysis, however, there are many situationsin which these criteria cannot be fulfilled. Archiveddata, collected in the past, for which analysis cannot berepeated or supplemented is a very common informationsource. Archaeological data collected at a regional extentduring years of field work and superficial observations arean additional example. Such data rarely provide representativesamples and are usually imbalanced; only very fewexamples contain useful data, while many examples remainwithout any archaeological traces. In spite of theselimitations archaeological information presented in theform of maps can be a useful and helpful tool to analysethe spatial patterns of some phenomena and, from a morepractical point of view, a tool to predict the location ofundiscovered occurrences. The primary goal of this paperis to present a methodology for modelling spatial patternsbased on imbalanced categorical data which do not fulfilthe criteria of spatial representation and incorporatesuncertainty in its decision process. This concept will bediscussed using a collection of Stone Age sites and set ofenvironmental variables from the postglacial lowlands inWestern Poland. We will propose a machine-learning systemwhich adopts CART through bootstrap simulation toincorporate uncertainty into the spatial model and utilisethat uncertainty in the decision-making process. Finally,we will describe the relationships between the model andenvironmental variables and present our results in cartographicform using the principles of decision-tree cartography.

Abstract

The stressful situation caused by the pandemic has become a powerful factor for the introduction of new methods and forms of education. The field of archaeological education was no exception. Creating online courses in archaeology and prehistory has its own specifics, which is manifested in the complexity of transmitting information about artefacts and field objects remotely. The project is to create a training course «Nature and society in Prehistoric Europe» through the creation of multimedia products such as video lectures, visual materials and online publications, which will widely present data and research results from Europe and Ukraine in particular. The main purpose of the course is to combine science and education through the interaction of student audiences with the professional environment by transmitting scientifically significant and relevant information about the interaction of society and nature from researchers to students and young scientists. In connection with the transfer of the learning process and the work of higher education institutions online, the project plans to develop multimedia materials that would provide professional delivery of knowledge and interaction between teacher and student. Priority objectives of the project: - Getting to know the professional cultures of the EU. In the course of the project implementation, the presentations and lectures of key speakers — leading scientists and teachers of European higher education institutions will be listened to and considered. Constant communication, joint seminars and consultations will allow better understanding and feeling the peculiarities of teaching practices in different European countries, to see the ethics of communication between teacher and student, to learn from the best methods of developing lectures and presentations. — Practices and principles of teaching in the EU. In the process of creating a multimedia course, students and young prehistorians will have direct communication with outstanding scientists and teachers in this field, which will ensure the direct transfer of scientific experience and information to students. — Foreign language learning and multilingual education. When creating a course at the seminars there will be communication in English. The participation of students and young scientists will help them to navigate in modern terminology and increase their ability to absorb information presented in a non-native language. — Online education. The result of the project will be an online product in the form of a multimedia course, a gallery of photos and digital illustrations and an online publication of a collection of scientific articles. This course establish close cooperation with representatives of educational institutions in France, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland and Ukraine, which will in the future create a consortium of teachers specializing in the interaction of nature and society in different historical epochs.
