Ferricretes of the Middle Eocene Dammam Formation, Western Qatar, were investigated using petrographic and ore microscopy, IR TGA, XRD, and geochemical analyses. The ferricretes mainly consist of goethite, which is very varigated in habit and texture. Geochemical analyses show that the ferricretes consist of impure chemical sediments, iron hydroxides plus variable amounts of carbonate and siliciclastic materials. The ferricretes resemble with respect to texture, mineralogy and chemistry modem ferrous sediments described as verdine facies. The ferricretes found within the Midra Shale are indicative of a reducing environment of deposition to have occurred during the early Tertiary in the Dukhan Area. These duricrusts may also be used to put some constrains on the climatic conditions as these marine calcareous host rocks gradually emerged during the Late Tertiary and Quaternary. تم دراسة عناقيد الحديد المتواجدة ضمن تكوين الدمام من العصر الايوسيني الأوسط بواسطة المجهر المستقطب والعاكس ، الاشعة تحتا الحمراء، التفاضل الحراري والتحليل الكيميائي . تتكون العناقيد بشكل رئيسي من الجوثيت الذي يوجد على هيئات متعدده وبنيات مختلفة . تدل التحاليل الجيوكيميائية على احتواء الحاقيد على رسوبيات كيميائية، هيدروكسيدات الحديد وكميات مختلفة من الكربونات والمواد السليكاتية . تتشابة العناقيد من الناحية المعدنية والنسيجية والكييمائية مع الرسوبيات الحديدية كما وصفت تحت اسم سحنة النردين . تدل العناقيد الموجودة في طين المدرا على بيئة ترسيب مختزلة خلال العصر الثلاثي في منطقة دخان . كما تدل هذه العناقيد على الظروف المناخية حيث أن الصخور الكلسية الحاوية عليها قد صعدت للأعلى بانتظام خاجل العصر الثلاثي العلوي والعصر الرباعي.

The purpose of this study is to characterize urinary stones from the United Arab Emirates using mineralogical techniques and compare it with stones in nature. Twenty six urinary calculi were subjected to chemical analysis, XRD, DTA, TGA and polarizing microscopy. The results show that the calculi belong to one of the four groups; namely phosphate (struvite, dehrenite, podolite, and ammonium calcium phosphate hydrate) making 11.5 % of the stones. Oxalate (whewellite and minor weddellite) 38.5%, urates (uricite) 11.5 %, and mixed type 38.5 %. Common mineralogical methods like the use of polarizing microscopy and thermal analysis proved to be a sensitive tool in the investigation of urinary calculi and gave more information than chemical analysis. The role of dietary factors and climate are discussed in relation to renal stones in the United Arab Emirates. هدف هذه الدراسة هو تمييز حصى الكلى من دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة بواسطة التقنيات المستخدمة في دراسة المعادن ومقارنة أنسجتها مع الصخور في الطبيعية. لقد تم دراسة ستة وعشرين من حصى الكلى بتعريضها للتحاليل الكيميائية والأشعة السينية والحرارية والمجهر المستقطب. وقد بينت النتائج أن الحصى تتكون من 4 مجموعات هي: مجموعة الفوسفات ( ستروفيت، يهرنيت ، بودوليت، وفوسفات امونيا الكالسيوم المائية) وتشكل ما نسبته 11,5% من مجموع الحصى، مجموعة الاكسالات (وهولايت وقليل من الودلايت) وتشكل 38,5 % ، ثم مجموعة اليوريا (يوريكيت) وتشكل 11,5 % من المجموع ثم مجموعة مشتركة التركيب وتشكل 38,5% . أن التقنيات المستخدمة في دراسة المعادن مثل استخدام المجهر المستقطب والتحليل الحراري قد قدمت نتائج دقيقة ومفصلة أكثر مقارنة مع طرق التحليل الكيميائي للحصى. لقد تم مناقشة عوامل التغذية والمناخ وتأثيرها على تكون الحصى في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة.

Large amounts of aeolian sand occur in the southeastern coastal zone of Qatar Peninsula as sand dunes accumulated in a vast sand field locally called " Niqyan Qatar ". The present work, carried out on a sand dune belt of this field near Mesaied Industrial City, revealed the distribution of heavy minerals shows a regional variability induced by provenance and local variability reflecting genetic differences. The studied dune sands are rich in shells of pelecypods, with the light mineral assemblage including quartz, feldspar, calcite, gypsum and halite. On the other hand, the heavy minerals are found to consist of two mineral assemblages : (a) stable mineral assemblage, which includes zircon, tourmaline and rutile and (b) unstable heavy mineral assemblage, which includes garnet, epidote, pyroxene, amphibole and A12Si05-polymorphs. Some of these minerals originate in igneous rocks, others originate in metamorphic rocks, while some minerals can be formed in both types of rocks. The aeolian sands forming the studied dunes have transported by the prevailing norhtwesterly Al-Shamal wind crossing the Arabian landmass. During periods of low sea level relative to the present, when the Gulf of Salwa was dry land. Further sands result from erosion and abrasion of the Tertiary rocks exposed on the Surface of Qatar by the still prevailing northwesterly wind toward the southeastern part of the country. These are believed to represent the most important sources of the heavy minerals in these dune sands. تتراكم كميات كبيرة من الرمال المسافية في جنوب شرقي النطاق الساحلي لقطر وذلك في حقل رملي يسمى محلياً باسم نقيان قطر ، لقد دلت الدراسة الحالية علي حزام من هذه الكثبان الرملية في منطقة مسعيد الصناعية أن توزيع المعادن الثقيلة متغير إقليميا بتأثيرات محلية وخارجية تعود إلى فروقات أصلية . تتكون رمال الكثبان من أصداف المحاريات مختلطة بمعادن خفيفة من الكوارتز ، الفلسبار ، الكالسيت ، الجبس والهاليت ، بينما تتضمن المعادن الثقيلة مجموعتين من المعادن : معادن ثابتة وتشمل الزركون ، التورمالين والروتيل ومعادن غير ثابتة وتشمل البيروكسين ، الامفيبول ، الابيدوت ، الجارنت ، الاباتيت ، الاندالوسيت والكيانيت . بعض هذه المعادن تتواجد في الصخور النارية والبعض الأخر في الصخور المتحولة وبعضها قد يتواجد في كلا النوعين من الصخور ، لقد تم نقل الرمال المكونة للكثبان في منطقة الدراسة بواسطة الرياح ذات الاتجاه الشمال الغربي والمعروفة باسم رياح الشمال وذلك خلال فترة انخفاض مستوى البحر مقارنة بالوقت الحالي ، وذلك في فترة انغلاق خليج سلوى . بعض الرمال تكونت أيضاً نتيجة عمليات الجوية والتعرية لصخور العصر الثلاث المحلية بواسطة الرياح الشمالية السائدة في دولة قطر. .

The raw materials, clinkers and cements from different cement factories in the United Arab Emirates have been investigated using polarizing microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and chemical analyses. The chemical and mineralogical analyses indicate that the local raw materials are suitable for cement industry. Geological review shows that there is a good potential for industrial-grade local occurrences of limestone, marl, gypsum and iron oxide, that may be used in place of imported similar commodites. لقد تم دراسة المواد الخام والكلنكر والإسمنت من عدة مصانع أسمنت بدولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة وذلك باستخدام المجهر المستقطب والأشعة السينية والمجهر الماسح الإلكتروني والتحليل الكيميائي. لقد دلت الدراسات المعدنية والكيميائية على جودة الخامات المحلية لصناعة الإسمنت ، كما أن الدراسات الجيولوجية المتوفرة تدل على وجود خامات محلية صناعية من الحجر الجيري والماسي (الطفلة) والجبس واكاسيد الحديد والتي يمكن أن تحل محل الخامات المستوردة والمماثلة لها.

Most of the Arabian countries produce bad quality and dusty blackboard chalk. Good quality and dustless blackboard chalk are usually imported from Europe, China, Taiwan and the United States of America. The essential raw materials for the production of blackboard chalk include chalk variety of limestone and gypsum or anhydrite. These materials are available in large quantities, especially in the Tertiary sediments in most of the Arabian countries. Investigations on the factors which affect chalk production indicate that the amount of water and the percentages of calcium carbonate, gypsum and binders as well as the grain size of the different components are the controlling factors in the production of blackboard chalk. تنتج معظم الدول العربية نوعيات رديئة من طباشير الكتابة في حين يتم استيراد كميات كبيرة من الطباشير الجيد والصحي من أوروبا والصين وأمريكا . أن اْهم المواد الخام اللازمة لصناعة الطباشير والتي تشمل الحجر الجيري والطباشيري والجبس أو الانهيدريت متوفرة بكثرة في الدول العربية خاصة في صخور العصر الثلاثي . لقد تم دراسة العوامل المؤثرة على صناعة وجودة الطباشير وتبين أن نسبة الماء والمعادن الأخرى مثل الكالسيت والجبس والمواد اللاحمة وكذلك حجم الحبيبات تلعب دوراً أساسياً في صناعة الطباشير من النوعية الجيدة .
