- Abstract
ABSTRACTMolecular sequence analyses of specimens previously identified as Cirrulicarpussp. in the southeastern Brazil (Espírito Santo coast), indicated that they are more closely related to the genus Meredithiathan to the genus Cirrulicarpus. The new species Meredithia dichotomais herein proposed to accommodate this uncommon and endemic taxon, morphologically characterized by an erect, narrow, strap-shaped thallus, up to 16 cm long, mostly dichotomously branched, with regular constrictions, densely to moderately filamentous medulla, with occasional ganglionic cells, and an expanded medullary region in the basal transverse sections, resembling a midrib in surface view. The species is also supported by the sequence divergence from its congeners: ≥4.3% and 2.2% in the COI-5P and rbcL markers, respectively. Meredithia dichotomadiffers from other 11 species of the genus by its dimensions and general habit, never forming expanded blades. This is a new genus record for Brazil and the first species of Meredithiaknown to occur in the western South Atlantic, increasing the known diversity in the red algal family Kallymeniaceae.

- Abstract
ABSTRACTThe number of newly described species has increased since the addition of molecular data to taxonomic studies, revealing that species considered widely distributed by morphological and anatomical studies are often comprised of complexes of several distinct species. This study reports on a new turf-forming species of Digeneafrom the Greater Caribbean (South Florida and eastern Cuba), previously identified as D. simplexbased on morpho-anatomical characters, but shown through DNA sequences to be a distinct species. Digenea nana sp. nov. is characterized by its small brush appearance, small dimensions (2.5 cm high and 0.6 mm wide), long determinate branches reaching 15 mm in length (its most striking feature) and 11–12 pericentral cells. Digenea nanais distinct from all its congeners, showing sequence divergences of 3.5–5.0% in COI-5P and 1.7–2.7% in rbcL. The species resolved as sister to D. rafaelii(genetic distance of about 3.5% and 1.7% in COI-5P and rbcL respectively) from Pacific Mexico, and can be easily distinguished by morpho-anatomical characters. Digenea nanais the seventh species in the genus worldwide. Given the presumed wide distribution of D. simplex, based solely on morpho-anatomy, and the number of cryptic and pseudo-cryptic species recently described, further integrative molecular and morpho-anatomical studies are likely to reveal new taxa.

- Abstract
The shortage of reliable primary taxonomic data limits the description of biological taxa and the understanding of biodiversity patterns and processes, complicating biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary studies. This deficit creates a significant taxonomic impediment to biodiversity research and conservation planning. The taxonomic impediment and the biodiversity crisis are widely recognized, highlighting the urgent need for reliable taxonomic data. Over the past decade, numerous countries worldwide have devoted considerable effort to Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), which called for the preparation of a working list of all known plant species by 2010 and an online world Flora by 2020. Brazil is a megadiverse country, home to more of the world's known plant species than any other country. Despite that, Flora Brasiliensis, concluded in 1906, was the last comprehensive treatment of the Brazilian flora. The lack of accurate estimates of the number of species of algae, fungi, and plants occurring in Brazil contributes to the prevailing taxonomic impediment and delays progress towards the GSPC targets. Over the past 12 years, a legion of taxonomists motivated to meet Target 1 of the GSPC, worked together to gather and integrate knowledge on the algal, plant, and fungal diversity of Brazil. Overall, a team of about 980 taxonomists joined efforts in a highly collaborative project that used cybertaxonomy to prepare an updated Flora of Brazil, showing the power of scientific collaboration to reach ambitious goals. This paper presents an overview of the Brazilian Flora 2020 and provides taxonomic and spatial updates on the algae, fungi, and plants found in one of the world's most biodiverse countries. We further identify collection gaps and summarize future goals that extend beyond 2020. Our results show that Brazil is home to 46,975 native species of algae, fungi, and plants, of which 19,669 are endemic to the country. The data compiled to date suggests that the Atlantic Rainforest might be the most diverse Brazilian domain for all plant groups except gymnosperms, which are most diverse in the Amazon. However, scientific knowledge of Brazilian diversity is still unequally distributed, with the Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado being the most intensively sampled and studied biomes in the country. In times of “scientific reductionism”, with botanical and mycological sciences suffering pervasive depreciation in recent decades, the first online Flora of Brazil 2020 significantly enhanced the quality and quantity of taxonomic data available for algae, fungi, and plants from Brazil. This project also made all the information freely available online, providing a firm foundation for future research and for the management, conservation, and sustainable use of the Brazilian funga and flora.

This study builds on recent treatments of the marine red algal family Gracilariaceae (Gracilariales) focusing in detail on Hydropuntia and Crassiphycus. Species in these two genera often present identification problems due to high levels of morphologial similarity among genetically distinct species, and high levels of phenotypic plasticity, leading to pseudocryptic speciation and homoplasies. In order to resolve long standing problems, clarify some species concepts and better understand the evolution of the group, we performed phylogenetic analyses of all plastid rbcL DNA sequences available for known Hydropuntia and Crassiphycus species, including newly sequenced specimens. Our results revealed the presence of potentially undescribed species, the existence of strong phylogeographic patterns below and above the species level and helped re-delineate morphologically similar taxa. New detailed morphological descriptions for three common yet poorly known Western Atlantic species are provided: C. secundus, C. usneoides and H. rangiferina. H. rangiferina from the Indo- Pacific is a distinct species from the true H. rangiferina and represents a putative undescribed species. We also provide a time-calibrated phylogeny for the six genera in the Gracilariales to identify past geological and climatic processes associated with their origin and diversification. - Abstract
ABSTRACTA small red alga was isolated into culture from rhodoliths collected on the Piauí coast, northeastern Brazil. Molecular data from the plastid-encoded rbcL gene, combined with morphological and ultrastructural evidence, demonstrated that it belongs to the genus Rhodachlyaand supports the proposal of a new species, R. westii. The new species was characterised by basal and erect uniseriate filaments, cells with parietal H-shaped or lobed plastids with one or two prominent pyrenoids, absence of unicellular hairs, and with monosporangia sessile or on branched stalks. Ultrastructure revealed pit plugs with two cap layers without a cap membrane, typical of Rhodachlyales. In our rbcL phylogeny, R. westii sp. nov. was recovered in a well-supported clade containing R. hawaiianaand R. madagascarensis(generitype) with interspecific divergence ranging from 5% to 10%, respectively. Characters previously used for species-level taxonomy (e.g. cell dimensions, number of pyrenoids and presence or absence of colourless hairs) are often plastic and overlap. We conclude that Rhodachlyaspecies can be accurately identified only based on DNA sequence data and their geographic distribution. Rhodachlya westiibecomes the third species of the genus, representing the first record in the Atlantic Ocean. Our data suggest that the genus is probably widely distributed. In view of the scarcity of reliable morphological features available for comparison, molecular-assisted alpha taxonomy is needed for uncovering the long-overlooked diversity in this red algal group.

- Abstract
ABSTRACTCalliblepharis occidentaliswas originally described from northeastern Brazil and later reduced to synonymy with C. fimbriatafrom South Africa. It was later reinstated, but phylogenetic relationships with other congeners and several morphological characters remain poorly understood. In the present article, topotype specimens of C. occidentaliswere reinvestigated using molecular, morphological and anatomical data, and its phylogenetic position was inferred on the basis of rbcL and SSU rRNA. Calliblepharis occidentaliswas characterised mainly by the axial filament surrounded by medullary cells, weakly developed rosettes in the outer cortex and carposporophytes with central columns. Our molecular phylogeny showed that C. occidentalisis distinct from C. fimbriata(rbcL divergence of 4.5%). Relationships among the 10 species currently assigned to Calliblepharisremain unresolved and whether they form a monophyletic clade is uncertain. Our results suggest that this genus is composed of five morphological groups, here called Calliblepharis sensu lato, based on vegetative and reproductive features such as type of placentation in the carposporophyte, axial filament arrangement and formation of rosettes. The morphological groups might represent different genera, but this hypothesis needs to be tested with better resolved phylogenies based on more comprehensive gene datasets.

- Abstract
Abstract:A new species of Gracilaria, G. suzannae sp. nov., is described on the basis of detailed morphological, anatomical and molecular evidence from recent collections from intertidal reefs of northeastern Brazil. Diagnostic features of the new species include: tufted and tough thalli with subdichotomous, alternate to irregular branches; some branches incurved, with discrete marginal teeth, giving thalli a dentate to lacerate appearance in the upper parts; an abrupt transition of cell size between cortical and medullary regions; spermatangial conceptacles of the textoriitype; and mature cystocarps with inconspicuous inner pericarp and few tubular nutritive filaments, particularly in basal portions. Universal plastid amplicon sequences of G. suzannaeformed a distinct group within the genus Gracilaria, with intraspecific divergence of 0.24%. In the rbcL analysis, G. suzannaewas recovered as sister to a well-supported clade containing G. occidentalisfrom the United States, with interspecific divergence of 1.3%. Unlike our specimens, the thallus habit of G. occidentalisis repeatedly forked, with smooth margins and rounded apices. Furthermore, G. suzannaewas phylogenetically positioned close to a major clade composed of Indo-Pacific flat species with lobed, spiny or denticulate margins, all of which diverged 1.1 to 4.8% from G. suzannae. Gracilaria suzannaebecomes the 16th flat species of Gracilariareported for Brazil.
