Abstract Background Increasing concern has recently been highlighted regarding crop damage due to extreme weather events caused by global warming and the increased production of ground-level ozone. Several studies have investigated rice growth in response to fertilization conditions under various environmental stress conditions; however, studies on growth development in response to fertilization conditions under combined high-temperature/ozone treatment conditions are scarce. In this study, we aimed investigate the growth and physiological development of rice under combined high temperature and ozone treatment conditions and to reveal the damage-mitigation effects of NPK fertilization treatments. Results The plants were treated with varying levels of NPK [N2 (N-P-K: 9.0-4.5-4.0 kg/a), P2 (4.5-9.0-4.0 kg/a), K2 (4.5-4.5-8.0 kg/a), and control (4.5-4.5-4.0 kg/10a).] under combined high-temperature (35 ℃) and ozone (150 pb) treatment conditions. Analysis of the growth metrics, including plant height, leaf age, dry weight, and the plant height/leaf age (PH/L) ratio were revealed that combined high-temperature/ozone treatment promoted the phenological development indicated by increasing leaf age but decreased the plant height and dry weight indicating its negative effect on quantitative growth. The effects of this combined high-temperature/ozone treatment on growth were alleviated by NPK fertilization, particularly in K2 treatment but worsened in N2 treatment. Visible damage symptoms in rice leaves induced by exposure to the combined stressors was also alleviated by the K2 treatment. At the physiological level, K2 treatment reduced the expression of OsF3H2, which is associated with antioxidant activity, suggesting that potassium improved stress tolerance. Additionally, expression of genes related to abscisic acid (ABA) metabolism showed increased OsNECD (ABA synthesis) and decreased OsCYP707A3 (ABA degradation) in the K2 treatment, promoting a stronger adaptive stress response. Stomatal conductance measurements indicated a slight increase under K2 treatment, reflecting enhanced regulation of stomatal function during stress. Conclusion The study highlights the potential of potassium fertilization to mitigate combined high-temperature and ozone stress in rice, suggesting it as a strategy to improve crop resilience and optimize fertilization. The findings offer insights into fertilization treatments and can guide future research on stress tolerance in crops.

IntroductionBorderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by interpersonal and emotional instabilities, recurring suicidal tendencies, and feelings of emptiness. Childhood adverse event is reported in 70%–80% of cases involving BPD. Furthermore, the deficiency in mentalization capacity plays a significant role in emotion dysregulation and social interaction problems within individuals with BPD. This study explored the relationship among childhood adverse experiences, mentalization capacity, and neurophysiological activity in patients with BPD.MethodsResting-state electroencephalography was used to identify the neural correlates associated with childhood adversity and mentalization deficits. The participants included 45 patients with BPD and 15 healthy controls.ResultsThe BPD group exhibited reduced alpha activity during eyes-closed rest, indicating heightened arousal even during relaxation. Correlations were found between the power spectral density (PSD) and mentalization capacity in the delta and theta ranges, suggesting an association between PSD and emotional awareness and expression. Gamma activity negatively correlated with psychic equivalence, implying a blurring of the boundaries between internal mental experiences and the external world.ConclusionThese findings offer insights into the pathophysiology of BPD, provide potential diagnostic markers, and suggest personalized treatment approaches based on mentalization traits.

Amputation changes the lives of patients and their families. Consequently, the patient must adapt to altered body function and image. During this adaptation process, psychological problems, such as depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder, can occur. The psychological difficulties of patients with amputation are often accepted as normal responses that are often poorly recognized by patients, family members, and their primary physicians. Psychological problems can interfere with rehabilitation and cause additional psychosocial problems. Therefore, their early detection and treatment are important. A multidisciplinary team approach, including mental health professionals, is ideal for comprehensive and biopsychosocial management. Mental health professionals could help patients set realistic goals and use adaptive coping styles. Psychiatric approaches should consider the physical, cognitive, psychological, social, and spiritual functions and social support systems before and after amputation. The abilities and limitations of physical, cognitive, psychological, and social functions should also be considered. To improve the patient’s adaptation, psychological interventions such as short-term psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness meditation, biofeedback, and group psychotherapy can be helpful.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the immediate stress and psychological impact experienced by healthcare workers and other personnel during the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Method: The sample consisted of 2554 hospital workers (i.e., physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and auxiliary staff members) who were working in Yeungnam University Hospital in Daegu, South Korea. The Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) was administered to the hospital workers twice over a 2 week interval. A high-risk group, identified on the basic of first total IES-R, was assessed further with the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) and the Clinical Global Impressions-Severity (CGIS) scale and was offered periodic psychiatric consultations on a telephone. Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of atosiban and ritodrine in pregnant women who were hospitalized for threatened preterm labor (TPL). Materials and methods: Diagnosis records of preterm labor and subsequent pregnancy-related records and medical records of newborns were extracted from the Clinical Data Warehouse of the Catholic Medical Center's affiliated hospital. Since 2009, cases of preterm labor diagnosed before 34 weeks of pregnancy for first-time mothers who delivered at any one of three hospitals and who received drug treatment for more than 2 days to delay delivery were included in the dataset. Based on characteristics of Korea's national health insurance system, the drug treatment after diagnosis of preterm labor could be classified into cases using only ritodrine (571 women), cases using only atosiban (244 women), and cases where ritodrine treatment was started and then changed to atosiban (275 women). Demographic factors, obstetric outcomes, neonatal outcomes of the two groups were analyzed. Results: The duration and maintenance of pregnancy were found to be similar between the two groups, although the initial cervical length was significantly shorter in the atosiban cohort (AC). Only in multifetal pregnancies, the maintenance of pregnancy was significantly longer in the AC. The total duration of pregnancy did not show any significant difference between the two groups regardless of singleton or multiple pregnancy. However, the distribution graph showed non-responders in the ritodrine cohort (RC). Our study showed a difference in neonatal birth weight of singleton between the two groups. The length of hospitalization and the NICU admission rate were also significantly higher in the RC for singleton. Although not significant, the proportion of numbers with an Apgar score less than 7 was higher in the RC. Neonatal death was more common in the RG (8 cases in AC and 18 cases in RC). Conclusions: Using atosiban for TPL is more effective than using ritodrine for maintaining pregnancy in the case of a multifetal pregnancy. In singleton pregnancies, neonatal outcomes of the atosiban group were superior to those of the ritodrine group. There seems to be a non-responder group when using ritodrine for TPL. Further studies are needed to determine causes of non-responders of ritodrine and effects of ritodrine on the fetus.

Background: Noninvasive cardiac radioablation is reported to be effective and safe for the treatment of ventricular tachycardia (VT). Objective: This study aimed to analyze the acute and long-term effects of VT radioablation. Methods: Patients with intractable VT or premature ventricular contraction (PVC)–induced cardiomyopathy were included in this study and treated using a single-fraction 25-Gy dose of cardiac radioablation. To quantitatively analyze the acute response after treatment, continuous electrocardiography monitoring was performed from 24 hours before to 48 hours after irradiation and at the 1-month follow-up. Long-term clinical safety and efficacy were assessed 1-year follow-up. Results: From 2019 to 2020, 6 patients were treated with radioablation for ischemic VT (n = 3), nonischemic VT (n = 2), or PVC-induced cardiomyopathy (n = 1). In the short-term assessment, the total burden of ventricular beats decreased by 49% within 24 hours after radioablation and further decreased by 70% at 1 month. The VT component decreased earlier and more dramatically than the PVC component (decreased by 91% and 57% at 1 month, respectively). In the long-term assessment, 5 patients showed complete (n = 3) or partial (n = 2) remission of ventricular arrhythmias. One patient showed recurrence at 10 months, which was successfully suppressed with medical treatment. The posttreatment PVC coupling interval was prolonged (+38 ms at 1 month). Ischemic VT burden decreased more markedly than nonischemic VT burden after radioablation. Conclusion: In this small case series of 6 patients, without a comparison group, cardiac radioablation appeared to decrease the intractable VT burden. A therapeutic effect was apparent within 1–2 days after treatment but was variable by etiology of cardiomyopathy.

Background Congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) is a common musculoskeletal disorder occurring at birth or in infancy. Purpose This study aimed to investigate the risk of comorbidities in CMT and explore the differences in neurodevelopmental outcomes between children who received physical therapy and those who did not. Methods Children with CMT born in 2008 and 2009 in Korea were included. CMT was defined as a primary diagnosis of congenital deformity of sternocleidomastoid muscle according to the International Classification of Diseases 10th revision. Here we investigated the associated neurological/musculoskeletal comorbidities of children with CMT versus those of the general population. We divided those with torticollis into treatment and nontreatment groups and assessed their developmental outcomes within both groups of children using the Korean-Ages and Stages Questionnaire (K-ASQ). Results Of the 917,707 children, 0.2% (n=1,719) were diagnosed with CMT. In children with torticollis, the prevalence of congenital hip deformities significantly increased to 4.5% (n=78). The prevalence of congenital head/spine deformities and other congenital malformations of the skull and facial bones increased to 2.6% (n=44), while the prevalence of congenital foot deformities was 2.4% (n=42). The risk ratio (RR) for delayed development based on the K-ASQ was higher for the total assessment (adjusted RR=0.97; 95% confidence interval, 0.93–0.99) in the CMT patients without physical therapy than in those with therapy. There was no significant intergroup difference in the assessment of each developmental area. Conclusion The prevalence of comorbid musculoskeletal deformities was higher in children with CMT than in the control group. The risk of developmental delay was higher in children who did not receive physical therapy than in those who did.

Abstract Background To evaluate pregnancy outcomes and the risk of adverse obstetrical outcomes of cesarean myomectomy (CM) compared with cesarean section (CS) only, and to investigate the trend of surgeons in choosing CM. Methods A retrospective cohort study was performed on all patients who underwent CS complicated by leiomyoma at two university hospitals between January 2010 and May 2020. All patients were categorized into the CM (341 women) or CS-only (438 women) group. We analyzed the demographic factors, obstetric factors, surgical outcomes, and possible risk factors for adverse outcomes between the two groups. Results Women who underwent CS only were significantly more likely to have a previous myomectomy and multiple leiomyoma history than women who underwent CM. The gestational age at delivery and pregnancy complications were significantly higher in the CS-only group. The mean size of the leiomyomas was larger in the CM group than in the CS-only group (5.8 ± 3.2 cm vs. 5.2 ± 3.1 cm, P = 0.005). The operation time and history of previous CS and preterm labor were higher in the CM group. The leiomyoma types differed between the two groups. The subserosal type was the most common in the CM group (48.7%), and the intramural type was the most common in the CS-only group. Patients in the CM group had fewer than three leiomyomas than those in the CS-only group. Preterm labor and abnormal presentation were relatively higher in the CM group than in the CS-only group, concerning leiomyoma presence. There were no significant differences in the preoperative and postoperative hemoglobin levels. The size of the leiomyoma (odds ratio [OR] = 1.162; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07–1.25; P 60 min (OR = 2.461; 95% CI: 1.45–4.15) were significant independent predictors of adverse outcomes after CM. Conclusions CM should be considered a reliable and safe approach to prevent the need for another surgery for remnant leiomyoma. Herein, surgeons performed CM when uterine leiomyomas were large, of the subserosal type, or few. Standardized treatment guidelines for myomectomy during CSs in pregnant women with uterine fibroids should be established.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the significance of fetal Doppler parameters in predicting adverse neonatal outcomes and the risk of cesarean delivery due to non-reassuring fetal status, in severe small for gestational age (SGA) fetuses of late preterm and term gestation.MethodsFetal brain and umbilical artery (UmA) Doppler parameters of cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) and UmA pulsatility index (PI) were evaluated in a cohort of 184 SGA fetuses between 34 and 41 weeks gestational age, who were less than the 5th percentile. The risks of neonatal morbidities and cesarean delivery due to non-reassuring fetal status were analyzed.ResultsUnivariate analysis revealed that abnormal CPR was significantly associated with cesarean delivery due to non-reassuring fetal status (P=0.018), but not with neonatal morbidities. However, abnormal CPR did not increase the risk of cesarean delivery due to non-reassuring fetal status in multivariate logistic regression analysis. BACKGROUND: The optimal functional evaluation of coronary artery stenosis in patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) has not been established. The objective of the study was to evaluate the instantaneous wave-free ratio (iFR) and fractional flow reserve (FFR) in patients with and without severe AS. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated 395 lesions in 293 patients with severe AS and 2257 lesions in 1882 patients without severe AS between 2010 and 2022 from a subgroup of the Interventional Cardiology Research In-Cooperation Society FFR Registry. All patients had FFR values, and iFR was analyzed post hoc using dedicated software only in lesions with adequate resting pressure curves (311 lesions in patients with severe AS and 2257 lesions in patients with nonsevere AS). RESULTS: The incidence of iFR ≤0.89 was 66.6% and 31.8% (P<0.001), while the incidence of FFR ≤0.80 was 45.3% and 43.9% (P=0.60) in the severe AS group and the nonsevere AS group, respectively. In the severe AS group, most lesions (95.2%) with iFR >0.89 had FFR >0.80, while 36.2% of lesions with iFR ≤0.89 had FFR >0.80. During a median follow-up of 2 years, FFR ≤0.80 was significantly associated with deferred lesion failure (adjusted hazard ratio, 2.71 [95% CI, 1.08-6.80]; P=0.034), while iFR ≤0.89 showed no prognostic value (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.31 [95% CI, 0.47-3.60]; P=0.60) in the severe AS group. Lesions with iFR ≤0.89 and FFR >0.80, in particular, were not associated with a higher rate of deferred lesion failure at 3 years compared with lesions with iFR >0.89 (15.4% versus 17.0%; P=0.58). CONCLUSIONS: This study suggested that FFR appears to be less affected by the presence of severe AS and is more associated with prognosis. iFR may overestimate the functional severity of coronary artery disease without prognostic significance, yet it can be useful for excluding significant stenosis in patients with severe AS. As higher plants are sessile organisms, they are unable to move to more favorable places; thus, they have developed the ability to survive under potentially detrimental conditions. Ubiquitination is a crucial post-translational protein modification and participates in abiotic stress responses in higher plants. In this study, we identified and characterized OsDIRP1 (Oryza sativa Drought-Induced RING Protein 1), a nuclear-localized putative RING E3 ubiquitin (Ub) ligase in rice (Oryza sativa L.). OsDIRP1 expression was induced by drought, high salinity, and abscisic acid (ABA) treatment, but not by low temperature (4°C) stress, suggesting that OsDIRP1 is differentially regulated by different abiotic stresses. To investigate its possible role in abiotic stress responses, OsDIRP1-overexpressing transgenic rice plants (Ubi:OsDIRP1-sGFP) were generated, and their phenotypes were analyzed. The T4 Ubi:OsDIRP1-sGFP lines showed decreased tolerance to drought and salt stress as compared to wild-type rice plants. Moreover, Ubi:OsDIRP1-sGFP progeny were less sensitive to ABA than the wild-type during both germination and post-germination growth. In contrast, Ubi:OsDIRP1-sGFP plants exhibited markedly higher tolerance to prolonged cold (4°C) treatment. These results suggest that OsDIRP1 acts as a negative regulator during drought and salt stress, whereas it functions as a positive factor during the cold stress response in rice.
