Abstract This study was conducted to provide evidence, using in vitro and in silico testing methods, regarding the adverse effects of iprodione, a representative dichlorophenyl dicarboxamide fungicide, on the endocrine system. In the present study, we used the HeLa9903 stably transfected transactivation assay (OECD TG 455), 22Rv1/MMTV_GR‒KO androgen receptor transcriptional activation assay (OECD TG 458), and toxicity prediction using VEGA QSAR. Our results showed that iprodione had no estrogen receptor antagonistic or androgen receptor agonistic effects; however, iprodione was determined to be an estrogen receptor agonist (log PC10 value is less than − 9) and androgen receptor antagonist (log IC30 value is − 4.58) without intrinsic toxicity against the human cell lines used in this study. VEGA QSAR was used to evaluate five substances with structures similar to that of iprodione. Among them, four chemicals were found to have positive androgen receptor and aromatase activities and have been observed to be developmental toxicants. These results suggest that iprodione regulates steroid hormone receptor interactions and is a potential reproductive toxicant.

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) gels create significant obstacles in industrial fiber spinning by forming insoluble networks that compromise solution stability and uniformity. This study investigates the rheological properties of PAN/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solutions, examining how aging time, moisture content, and polymer concentration affect gelation behavior. Dynamic rheological analysis revealed that both physical and chemical crosslinks play crucial roles in gel formation, with gelation accelerating markedly when moisture content exceeds 3% and aging progresses. Under heat treatment at 80 °C, samples with increased moisture content demonstrated rapid transitions to solid-like states, indicating a critical moisture threshold for enhanced gelation kinetics. Additionally, reductions in polymer concentration disrupted physical crosslink density, thereby mitigating gel formation. These results underscore the importance of precisely controlling moisture and concentration parameters in PAN solutions to stabilize solution properties and minimize gel formation, thus enhancing process efficiency and quality in PAN-based carbon fiber production.

Monostromatic algae, Monostroma and Gayralia, are taxonomically complex, with several nomenclatural changes over the past years owing to indistinguishable morphological features. Several Monostroma species were recently transferred to the genus Gayralia based on their ontogeny and molecular analysis. There is no record of the occurrence of Gayralia in Korea, whereas three species of Monostroma have been reported. We conducted a molecular analysis based on the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region of the specimens from Jeju, Korea, that we considered to be included in the genus Monostroma. The specimens from this study and five sequences of Monostroma nitidum downloaded from the GenBank were conspecific with Gayralia kuroshiensis from Japan but distinct from the M. nitidum syntype from Australia. G. kuroshiensis has a single, expanded, laminar, monostromatic thallus that is light to mid-green. The thallus thickness in the marginal regions was similar to that of G. kuroshiensis from Japan, with an undulate shape and no marginal teeth. The cells in surface view were in groups of two, rectangular to polygonal in shape, with one to three pyrenoids per cell. Based on the morphological and molecular analyses, we report a new record of G. kuroshiensis in Korea.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are probiotic microorganisms widely used for their health benefits in the food industry. However, recent concerns regarding their safety have highlighted the need for comprehensive safety assessments. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the safety of L. bulgaricus IDCC 3601, isolated from homemade plain yogurt, via genomic, phenotypic, and toxicity-based analyses. L. bulgaricus IDCC 3601 possessed a single circular chromosome of 1,865,001 bp, with a GC content of 49.72%, and 1910 predicted coding sequences. No virulence or antibiotic resistance genes were detected. Although L. bulgaricus IDCC 3601 exhibited antibiotic resistance to gentamicin and kanamycin, this resistance is an intrinsic feature of this species. L. bulgaricus IDCC 3601 did not produce biogenic amines and did not exhibit hemolytic activity. Phenotypic analysis of enzyme activity and carbohydrate fermentation profiles revealed the metabolic features of L. bulgaricus IDCC 3601. Moreover, no deaths or abnormalities were observed in single-dose oral toxicity tests, suggesting that L. bulgaricus IDCC 3601 has no adverse effect on human health. Finally, L. bulgaricus IDCC 3601 inhibited the growth of potential carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. Therefore, our results suggest that L. bulgaricus IDCC 3601 is a safe probiotic strain for human consumption.

Anammox, a reaction in which microorganisms oxidize ammonia under anaerobic conditions, is used in the industry to remove ammonium from wastewater in an environmentally friendly manner. This process does not produce intermediate products such as nitrite or nitrate, which can act as secondary pollutants in soil and water environments. For industrial applications, anammox bacteria should be obtained from the environment and cultivated. Anammox bacteria generally exhibit a slow growth rate and may not produce a large number of cells due to their anaerobic metabolism. Additionally, their habitats appear to be limited to specific environments, such as oxidation-reduction transition zones. Consequently, most of the anammox bacteria that are used or studied originate from marine environments. In this study, anammox bacterial evidence was found in rice paddy soil and cultured under various conditions of aerobic, microaerobic, and anaerobic batch incubations to determine whether enrichment was possible. The anammox-specific gene (hzsA) and microbial community analyses were performed on the incubated soils. Although it was not easy to enrich anammox bacteria due to co-occurrence of denitrification and nitrification based on the chemistry data, potential existence of anammox bacteria was assumed in the terrestrial paddy soil environment. For potential industrial uses, anammox bacteria could be searched for in rice paddy soils by applying optimal enrichment conditions.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a progressive liver disease that can progress to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), NASH-related cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). NAFLD ranges from simple steatosis (or nonalcoholic fatty liver [NAFL]) to NASH as a progressive form of NAFL, which is characterized by steatosis, lobular inflammation, and hepatocellular ballooning with or without fibrosis. Because of the complex pathophysiological mechanism and the heterogeneity of NAFLD, including its wide spectrum of clinical and histological characteristics, no specific therapeutic drugs have been approved for NAFLD. The heterogeneity of NAFLD is closely associated with cellular plasticity, which describes the ability of cells to acquire new identities or change their phenotypes in response to environmental stimuli. The liver consists of parenchymal cells including hepatocytes and cholangiocytes and nonparenchymal cells including Kupffer cells, hepatic stellate cells, and endothelial cells, all of which have specialized functions. This heterogeneous cell population has cellular plasticity to adapt to environmental changes. During NAFLD progression, these cells can exert diverse and complex responses at multiple levels following exposure to a variety of stimuli, including fatty acids, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Therefore, this review provides insights into NAFLD heterogeneity by addressing the cellular plasticity and metabolic adaptation of hepatocytes, cholangiocytes, hepatic stellate cells, and Kupffer cells during NAFLD progression.

Abstract The terpolymer (PFS–GMA–TFEMA) was prepared and coated on silica waveguide for polymeric optical overclad. In our study, athermal characteristics were realised by adjusting the coefficient of negative thermal expansion of the synthesised terpolymer overclad, and the positive thermo‐optic coefficient of the silica thin film. The measured values were −1.11 × 10–4 /K and 0.79 × 10–5 /K (dn/dT). The thermal properties according to the temperature change indicated that the wavelength had shifted by about 0.15 nm from 20 to 90°C, with little change over 50°C. When the temperature increased, the wavelength shift of the silica/terpolymer hybrid arrayed waveguide grating was −0.002 nm/°C, compared to the 0.01 nm/°C of silica arrayed waveguide grating. Terpolymer overclad arrayed waveguide grating showed a centre wavelength loss of 5.334 dB, loss uniformity of 0.864 dB, a polarisation dependent loss of 0.162 dB, and a non‐adjacent crosstalk of −31.67 dB.

The skin sensitization potential of agrochemicals can be assessed using laboratory methods such as the keratinocyte activation assay so that their use in regulatory toxicology might replace experimental animal testing. Here, we evaluated the skin sensitization potential of 11 agrochemicals by using an antioxidant response element–nuclear factor erythroid 2 luciferase assay in KeratinoSens and LuSens cells and applying a skin sensitization adverse outcome pathway (AOP). The KeratinoSens and LuSens assays consistently evaluated the skin sensitization potential of 10/11 agrochemicals with reference to animal testing databases. Benomyl, pretilachlor, fluazinam, terbufos, butachlor, and carbosulfan were correctly detected as sensitizers, and glufosinate ammonium, oxiadiazon, tebuconazole, and etofenprox were correctly detected as non-sensitizers. For diazinon, the skin sensitizing potential was positive in the KeratinoSens assay but not in the LuSens assay. These results suggest that the evaluation of in vitro skin sensitization using the AOP mechanism can be applied to assess active agrochemicals.

Abiotic stresses extensively reduce agricultural crop production globally. Traditional breeding technology has been the fundamental approach used to cope with abiotic stresses. The development of gene editing technology for modifying genes responsible for the stresses and the related genetic networks has established the foundation for sustainable agriculture against environmental stress. Integrated approaches based on functional genomics and transcriptomics are now expanding the opportunities to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying abiotic stress responses. This review summarizes some of the features and weblinks of plant genome databases related to abiotic stress genes utilized for improving crops. The gene-editing tool based on clustered, regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) has revolutionized stress tolerance research due to its simplicity, versatility, adaptability, flexibility, and broader applications. However, off-target and low cleavage efficiency hinder the successful application of CRISPR/Cas systems. Computational tools have been developed for designing highly competent gRNA with better cleavage efficiency. This powerful genome editing tool offers tremendous crop improvement opportunities, overcoming conventional breeding techniques’ shortcomings. Furthermore, we also discuss the mechanistic insights of the CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing technology. This review focused on the current advances in understanding plant species’ abiotic stress response mechanism and applying the CRISPR/Cas system genome editing technology to develop crop resilience against drought, salinity, temperature, heavy metals, and herbicides.

An increasing number of studies have demonstrated that genetic differentiation and cryptic diversity in the sea occur over considerably smaller spatial scales than previously comprehended, considering the wide distribution range of many morphologically defined macroalgal species. However, knowledge of the turf-forming red alga Caulacanthus is incomplete regarding its species diversity, as well as genetic differentiation within the genus. We analyzed Caulacanthus specimens from the NW Pacific, NE Pacific, Central Pacific, SW Pacific, SE Indian, NE Atlantic, and SE Atlantic Ocean using mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI-5P), plastid ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (rbcL), and Rubisco spacer (rbcL-S). The objectives of this study were to 1) determine the number of species that exhibit the morphology of C. ustulatus, 2) investigate the present distribution pattern of Caulacanthus species, and 3) estimate the degree of genetic connectivity between the populations of Caulacanthus species from different regions. Our results revealed molecular evidence that the genus Caulacanthus comprises of at least seven species with deep genetic divergence, which is indicative of not only a strong geographical subdivision but also a relatively long temporal discontinuity. Most species exhibited limited geographic distribution, showing considerable genetic divergence in the populations isolated by distance. Our study provides evidence of a greater evolutionary independence of Caulacanthus populations, which have undergone a series of allopatric diversification events.

Abstract Following the permanent shutdown of Kori Unit 1 in June 2017, the Republic of Korea has been preparing for full‐scale decommissioning work. In addition, the design life of 12 units will expire by 2030. If decommissioning begins without initially extending the lifespan of nuclear reactors, massive amounts of decommissioning wastes will be generated in a short period. The total amount of radioactive wastes generated during the dismantling of a pressurized water reactor is estimated as 6200 tons, and approximately 70% of the total radioactive wastes are classified as metal wastes. Self‐disposal through the decontamination of contaminated metals can contribute to the economic feasibility of decommissioning nuclear power plants because it can reduce the disposal cost of medium‐ and low‐level radioactive wastes. Therefore, this study evaluated the possibility of self‐disposal of steam generators that may occur during future decommissioning. The radioactivity analysis data on transferring the replaced steam generator of Hanul Unit 1 were used as the source term. The decontamination factor was calculated by applying 200 units from 1200 to 2000, and the radiation dose was evaluated using the RESRAD‐RECYCLE code. Consequently, the single‐nuclide concentration and sum of the allowable concentration fraction for mixed radionuclides at a decontamination factor of 1400 were below the regulatory requirements; however, the dose evaluation results exceeded the allowable dose in some scenarios. The decontamination factor was 2000, when the dose evaluation results for all scenarios met the regulatory requirements.

This paper develops a method to obtain multivariate kernel functions for density estimation problems in which the density function is defined on compact support. If domain-specific knowledge requires certain conditions to be satisfied at the boundary of the support of an unknown density, the proposed method incorporates the information contained in the boundary conditions into the kernel density estimators. The proposed method provides an exact kernel function that satisfies the boundary conditions, even for small samples. Existing methods primarily deal with a one-sided boundary in a one-dimensional problem. We consider density in a two-sided interval and extend it to a multi-dimensional problem.

Modern plant pathology relies on bioinformatics approaches to create novel plant disease diagnostic tools. In recent years, a significant amount of biological data has been generated due to rapid developments in genomics and molecular biology techniques. The progress in the sequencing of agriculturally important crops has made it possible to develop a better understanding of plant–pathogen interactions and plant resistance. The availability of host–pathogen genome data offers effective assistance in retrieving, annotating, analyzing, and identifying the functional aspects for characterization at the gene and genome levels. Physical mapping facilitates the identification and isolation of several candidate resistance (R) genes from diverse plant species. A large number of genetic variations, such as disease-causing mutations in the genome, have been identified and characterized using bioinformatics tools, and these desirable mutations were exploited to develop disease resistance. Moreover, crop genome editing tools, namely the CRISPR (clustered regulatory interspaced short palindromic repeats)/Cas9 (CRISPR-associated) system, offer novel and efficient strategies for developing durable resistance. This review paper describes some aspects concerning the databases, tools, and techniques used to characterize resistance (R) genes for plant disease management.

Purpose Hysteroscopy can be used both to diagnose and to treat intrauterine pathologies. It is well known that hysteroscopy helps to improve reproductive outcomes by treating intrauterine pathologies. However, it is uncertain whether hysteroscopy is helpful in the absence of intrauterine pathologies. This study aimed to confirm whether hysteroscopy improves the reproductive outcomes of infertile women without intrauterine pathologies. Methods We conducted a systematic review of 11 studies retrieved from Ovid-MEDLINE, Ovid-Embase, and the Cochrane Library. Two independent investigators extracted the data and used risk-of-bias tools (RoB 2.0 and ROBINS-I) to assess their quality. Results Diagnostic hysteroscopy prior to in vitro fertilization (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) was associated with a higher clinical pregnancy rate (CPR) and live birth rate (LBR) than non-hysteroscopy in patients with recurrent implantation failure (RIF) (odds ratio, 1.79 and 1.46; 95% confidence interval, 1.40–2.30 and 1.08–1.97 for CPR and LBR, respectively) while hysteroscopy prior to first IVF was ineffective. The overall meta-analysis of LBR showed statistically significant findings for RIF, but a subgroup analysis showed effects only in prospective cohorts (odds ratio, 1.40 and 1.47; 95% confidence interval, 0.62–3.16 and 1.04–2.07 for randomized controlled trials and prospective cohorts, respectively). Therefore, the LBR should be interpreted carefully and further research is needed. Conclusion Although further research is warranted, hysteroscopy may be considered as a diagnostic and treatment option for infertile women who have experienced RIF regardless of intrauterine pathologies. This finding enables nurses to educate and support infertile women with RIF prior to IVF/ICSI.

Background We investigated RNA sequencing-based transcriptome profiling and the transformation of mature osteoblasts into bone lining cells (BLCs) through a lineage tracing study to better understand the effect of mechanical unloading on bone loss. Methods Dmp1-CreERt2(+):Rosa26R mice were injected with 1 mg of 4-hydroxy-tamoxifen three times a week starting at postnatal week 7, and subjected to a combination of botulinum toxin injection with left hindlimb tenotomy starting at postnatal week 8 to 10. The animals were euthanized at postnatal weeks 8, 9, 10, and 12. We quantified the number and thickness of X-gal(+) cells on the periosteum of the right and left femoral bones at each time point. Results Two weeks after unloading, a significant decrease in the number and a subtle change in the thickness of X-gal(+) cells were observed in the left hindlimbs compared with the right hindlimbs. At 4 weeks after unloading, the decrease in the thickness was accelerated in the left hindlimbs, although the number of labeled cells was comparable. RNA sequencing analysis showed downregulation of 315 genes in the left hindlimbs at 2 and 4 weeks after unloading. Of these, Xirp2, AMPD1, Mettl11b, NEXN, CYP2E1, Bche, Ppp1r3c, Tceal7, and Gadl1 were upregulated during osteoblastogenic/osteocytic and myogenic differentiation in vitro. Conclusion These findings demonstrate that mechanical unloading can accelerate the transformation of mature osteoblasts into BLCs in the early stages of bone loss in vivo. Furthermore, some of the genes involved in this process may have a pleiotropic effect on both bone and muscle.

Abstract Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains are distinct from general Staphylococcus strains with respect to the composition of the membrane, ability to form a thicker biofilm, and, importantly, ability to modify the target of antibiotics to evade their activity. The agr gene is an accessory global regulator of gram-positive bacteria that governs virulence or resistant mechanisms and therefore an important target for the control of resistant strains. However, the mechanism by which agr impacts resistance to β-lactam antibiotics remains unclear. In the present study, we found the Δagr mutant strain having higher resistance to high concentrations of β-lactam antibiotics such as oxacillin and ampicillin. To determine the influence of variation in the microenvironment of cells between the parental and mutant strains, fatty acid analysis of the supernatant, total lipids, and phospholipid fatty acids were compared. The Δagr mutant strain tended to produce fewer fatty acids and retained lower amounts of C16, C18 fatty acids in the supernatant. Phospholipid analysis showed a dramatic increase in the hydrophobic longer-chain fatty acids in the membrane. To target membrane, we applied several surfactants and found that sorbitan monolaurate (Span20) had a synergistic effect with oxacillin by decreasing biofilm formation and growth. These findings indicate that agr deletion allows for MRSA to resist antibiotics via several changes including constant expression of mecA, fatty acid metabolism, and biofilm thickening.

BackgroundRecently, lineage-tracing studies demonstrated that parathyroid hormone and anti-sclerostin antibody (Scl-Ab) can convert bone lining cells (BLCs) into active osteoblasts. However, BLCs might also be differentiated into other lineages. Here we investigated whether BLCs could differentiate into bone marrow adipocytes (BMAds) and whether Scl-Ab could suppress this process.MethodsDmp1-CreERt2:mTmG mice were injected with 0.5 mg of 4-hydroxytamoxifen once weekly from postnatal week 4 to week 8. The mice were treated with either vehicle or rosiglitazone for 8 weeks (weeks 12–20). Moreover, they were administered either vehicle or Scl-Ab (50 mg/kg) twice weekly for 4 weeks (weeks 16–20, N = 4–6/group). We chased the GFP+ cells from the endosteal surface to the bone marrow (BM) of the femur. Using immunohistochemical staining, the numbers of perilipin+ or GFP+/perilipin double+ cells in the BM were quantified. In addition, serum N-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen (P1NP) levels were measured at each time point, and bone mass was analyzed at 20 weeks using micro-computed tomography.ResultsScl-Ab administration significantly reversed the decreases in bone parameters induced by rosiglitazone. Plump GFP+ cells, presumably active osteoblasts, and extremely flat GFP+ cells, presumably BLCs, were present on the endosteal surface of the femur at 8 and 12 weeks, respectively, in line with prior findings. When we chased the GFP+ cells, rosiglitazone significantly increased the number of GFP/perilipin double+ BMAds compared to the effects of the vehicle (P < 0.001), and overlapping Scl-Ab administration decreased the number of GFP/perilipin double + BMAd compared to rosiglitazone alone (P < 0.001). In addition, we found that osteoblast lineage cells such as BLCs might express PPARγ on immunohistochemical staining. When rosiglitazone was administered to Rip-Cre:mTmG mice, GFP+ cells were not present on the endosteal surface or in the BM of the femur; however, they were present in the pancreas.ConclusionBLCs could be sources of BMAds, and rosiglitazone could stimulate the differentiation of osteoblast lineage cells into BMAds. Suppression of the differentiation of osteoblast lineage cells into BMAds might contribute to anabolic effects resulting from the pharmacologic inhibition of sclerostin.

Purpose: The microenvironment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) with extensive desmoplastic stroma contributes to aggressive cancer behavior. Angiotensin system inhibitors (ASIs) reduce stromal fibrosis and are a promising therapeutic strategy. The purpose of this study was to examine how ASIs affected the oncological results of patients who had their PDAC removed. Materials and Methods: A retrospective assessment was conducted on the clinicopathological and survival data of patients who received curative resection for PDAC at Severance Hospital between January 2012 and December 2019. Results: A total of 410 participants (228 male and 182 female), with a median follow-up period of 12.8 months, were included in this study. Patients were divided into three groups, based on ASI use and history of hypertension: group 1, normotensive and never used ASI (n=210, 51.2%); group 2, ASI non-users with hypertension (n=50, 12.2%); and group 3, ASI users with hypertension (n=150, 36.6%). The three groups did not differ significantly in terms of age, sex, kind of operation, T and N stages, or adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapy. Moreover, there was no discernible difference in disease-free survival between those who used ASI and those who did not (p=0.636). The 5-year overall survival (OS) rates in groups 1, 2, and 3 were 52.6%, 32.3%, and 38.0%, respectively. However, the OS rate of ASI users was remarkably higher than that of non-users (p=0.016). Conclusion: In patients with resected PDAC, ASI is linked to longer survival rates. Furthermore, for individuals with hypertension, ASI in conjunction with conventional chemotherapy may be an easy and successful treatment option. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ordered and disordered mesoporous structures were synthesized by a self-assembly method using a mixture of phenolic resin and petroleum-based mesophase pitch as the starting materials, amphiphilic triblock copolymer F127 as a soft template, hydrochloric acid as a catalyst, and distilled water as a solvent. Then, mesoporous carbons were obtained via autoclave method at low temperature (60 °C) and then carbonization at a relatively low temperature (600 °C), respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses revealed that the porous carbons with a mesophase pitch content of approximately 10 wt% showed a highly ordered hexagonal mesostructure with a highly uniform pore size of ca. 5.0 nm. In addition, the mesoporous carbons prepared by self-assembly and low-temperature autoclave methods exhibited the amorphous or crystalline carbon structures with higher specific surface area (SSA) of 756 m2/s and pore volume of 0.63 cm3/g, depending on the synthesis method. As a result, mesoporous carbons having a high SSA were successfully prepared by changing the mixing ratio of mesophase pitch and phenolic resin. The electrochemical properties of as-obtained mesoporous carbon materials were investigated. Further, the OMC-meso-10 electrode delivered the maximum SC of about 241 F/g at an applied current density of 1 A/g, which was higher than those of the MC-10 (~104 F/g) and OMC-20 (~115 F/g).

The aim of this study was to derive determinants that affect the behavior associated with using self-order kiosks among fast-food restaurant consumers through the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology model, and to analyze the moderating effect of consumers’ difference age (difference between individuals’ cognitive age and chronological age) among the variables. From December 1 to 30, 2019, a survey was conducted on 316 customers using four different fast-food restaurants in the Seoul Station. The results showed that the higher the price value, social influence, performance expectancy, and hedonic motivation, the higher the behavioral intention of ordering through the kiosk; furthermore, the higher the difference age, the higher the behavioral intention of using a kiosk. Therefore, fast-food restaurant operators need to ensure that customers who are unfamiliar with using kiosks can order and make payments through kiosks with minimal effort and reasonable price value.

PURPOSE: To examine effects of a postnatal care program on self-efficacy, self-management, and glycemic control in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). METHODS: A non-equivalent control group non-synchronized quasi-experimental design was used. Sixty-two women with GDM were enrolled and assigned to either an experimental group (n=30) or a control group (n=32). The experimental group received an intervention which was postnatal care program for women with GDM. The postnatal care program for GDM included an individual education with leaflet and mobile web-based video with three times of telephone counseling. Effects of the intervention were measured with self-efficacy, self-management questionnaire, and a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (75g OGTT). Statistical significance was examined using independent t-test and χ2-test. RESULTS: Although there was no significant difference in 75g OGTT (χ2=.11, p=.748) or self-management (t=−1.28, p=.206), there was a statistically significant increase in self-efficacy (t=−2.02, p=.048) in the experimental group compared to that in the control group. CONCLUSION: A postnatal care program is needed for women with GDM to improve their self-efficacy. Further studies are warranted to improve self-management and glycemic control through tailored education for GDM postpartum women.

Lemierre syndrome is characterized by anaerobic bacterial infection in the head and neck and clinical or radiological evidence of internal jugular vein thrombophlebitis. The most common pathogens are Fusobacterium species, particularly Fusobacterium necrophorum. Septic emboli resulting from infected thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein leads to metastatic infections involving lung, liver, kidney, bone and central nervous system. The accurate diagnosis and treatment is important because it may be associated with a high mortality rate if untreated. We present a case of 28-year-old man with an atypical history for the diagnosis of Lemierre syndrome, which showed no definite evidence of internal jugular thrombophlebitis.

Abstract Background Carbon monoxide (CO) is one of the primary components of emissions from light-duty vehicles, and reportedly comprises 77% of all pollutants emitted in terms of concentration. Exposure to CO aggravates cardiovascular disease and causes other health disorders. The study was aimed to assess the negative effects by injecting different amounts of CO concentration directly to human volunteers boarding in the car. Methods Human volunteers were exposed to CO concentrations of 0, 33.2, and 72.4 ppm, respectively during the first test and 0, 30.3, and 48.8 ppm respectively during the second test while seated in the car. The volunteers were exposed to each concentration for approximately 45 min. After exposure, blood pressure measurement, blood collection (carboxyhemoglobin [COHb] analysis), medical interview, echocardiography test, and cognitive reaction test were performed. Result In patients who were exposed to a mean concentration of CO for 72.4 ± 1.4 ppm during the first exposure test and 48.8 ± 3.7 ppm during the second exposure test, the COHb level exceeded 2%. Moreover, the diastolic blood pressure was decreased while increasing in CO concentration after exposure. The medical interview findings showed that the degree of fatigue was increased and the degree of concentration was reduced when the exposed concentration of CO was increased. Conclusion Although the study had a limited sample size, we found that even a low concentration of CO flowing into a car could have a negative influence on human health, such as change of blood pressure and degree of fatigue.

This study aims to analyze the moderating effect of gender on the relationship between technology readiness and willingness to continue using self-service kiosks in fast-food restaurants among middle-aged and older consumers. We conducted a survey from 1 May to 30 May 2020 among 320 consumers born in or before 1980 who only used kiosks in fast-food restaurants. The findings are as follows: First, the more innovative and optimistic the consumer, the more they are willing to continue using kiosks, whereas the more discomfort the consumer feels, the less likely they are to continue using them. Second, among technology readiness factors, a sense of insecurity does not have a significant effect on the willingness to continue to use kiosks. Third, among innovative consumers, men were found to be more likely to continue using kiosks than women. Thus, fast-food restaurant managers need to know that men and women perceive technology-based self-service differently.

Red radish (Raphanus sativus L.) cultivars are a rich source of health-promoting anthocyanins and are considered a potential source of natural colorants used in the cosmetic industry. However, the development of red radish cultivars via conventional breeding is very difficult, given the unusual inheritance of the anthocyanin accumulation trait in radishes. Therefore, molecular markers linked with radish color are needed to facilitate radish breeding. Here, we characterized the RsTT8 gene isolated from four radish genotypes with different skin and flesh colors. Sequence analysis of RsTT8 revealed a large number of polymorphisms, including insertion/deletions (InDels), single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and simple sequence repeats (SSRs), between the red-fleshed and white-fleshed radish cultivars. To develop molecular markers on the basis of these polymorphisms for discriminating between radish genotypes with different colored flesh tissues, we designed four primer sets specific to the RsTT8 promoter, InDel, SSR, and WD40/acidic domain (WD/AD), and tested these primers on a diverse collection of radish lines. Except for the SSR-specific primer set, all primer sets successfully discriminated between red-fleshed and white-fleshed radish lines. Thus, we developed three molecular markers that can be efficiently used for breeding red-fleshed radish cultivars.

Inferring phylogeographic patterns of macroalgal species is essential for understanding the population structure and for the conservation of macroalgal species. In this study, the phylogeographic patterns of two co-distributed macroalgal species along the coast of Korea and Japan, Pachymeniopsis lanceolata and Pachymeniopsis elliptica, were analyzed. Pachymeniopsis lanceolata (215 specimens from 36 sites) and P. elliptica (138 specimens from 24 sites), using the plastid rbcL gene, are characterized by fifteen and six haplotypes, respectively. Mitochondrial COI-5P gene sequences revealed a low variation for both species. An analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA), pairwise FST comparisons, and haplotype networks based on the rbcL data suggest a weak genetic differentiation of both species. The shared haplotypes (P. lanceolata: LR01; P. elliptica: ER01) found in the entire sampling range indicate that these two Pachymeniopsis species can disperse over long distances along the coast of Korea and Japan. Despite the similar phylogeographic pattern, our results suggest that P. lanceolata has a higher genetic diversity, with a wider distribution along the Korean Peninsula than P. elliptica. Moreover, it is adapted to low sea surface temperatures and survived in more of the available habitats during periods of climatic change, whereas P. elliptica is less adaptable and more susceptible to environmental disturbance. This phylogeographic study provides a rationale for the conservation of the wild Pachymeniopsis population.
