Search

A coupling between Earths rotation and orbital angular momentum (OAM), known as the Sagnac effect, is observed in entangled neutrons produced using a spin echo interferometer. After correction for instrument systematics the measured coupling is within 5% of theory, with an uncertainty of 7.2%. The OAM in our setup is transverse to the propagation direction and scales linearly with wavelength (4 A - 12.75 A), hence the coupling can be varied, without mechanically rotating the device. Therefore, the systematic error is lower than in previous experiments. The detected transverse OAM of our beam corresponds to 4098 +- 295 hbar A-1, 5 orders of magnitude lower than in previous neutron experiments, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of using the Sagnac effect to definitively measure neutron OAM and paving the way towards observations of the quantum Sagnac effect

In 2018, the Greenland Telescope (GLT) started scientific observation in Greenland. Since then, we have completed several significant improvements and added new capabilities to the telescope system. The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a prime target for studying black hole accretion and jet formation^{1,2}. Event Horizon Telescope observations of M87 in 2017, at a wavelength of 1.3 mm, revealed a ring-like structure, which was interpreted as gravitationally lensed emission around a central black hole^3. Here we report images of M87 obtained in 2018, at a wavelength of 3.5 mm, showing that the compact radio core is spatially resolved. High-resolution imaging shows a ring-like structure of 8.4_{-1.1}^{+0.5} Schwarzschild radii in diameter, approximately 50% larger than that seen at 1.3 mm. The outer edge at 3.5 mm is also larger than that at 1.3 mm. This larger and thicker ring indicates a substantial contribution from the accretion flow with absorption effects in addition to the gravitationally lensed ring-like emission. The images show that the edge-brightened jet connects to the accretion flow of the black hole. Close to the black hole, the emission profile of the jet-launching region is wider than the expected profile of a black-hole-driven jet, suggesting the possible presence of a wind associated with the accretion flow., Comment: 50 pages, 18 figures, 3 tables, author's version of the paper published in Nature

High-energy physics is primarily concerned with uncovering the laws and principles that govern nature at the fundamental level. Research in this field usually relies on probing the boundaries of established physics, an undertaking typically associated with extreme energy and distance scales. It is therefore unsurprising that particle physics has traditionally been dominated by large-scale experimental methods often involving high energies, such as colliders and storage rings, cosmological and astrophysical observations, large-volume detector systems, etc. However, high-sensitivity measurements in smaller experiments, often performed at lower energies, are presently experiencing a surge in importance for particle physics for at least two reasons. First, they exploit synergies to adjacent areas of physics with recent advances in experimental techniques and technology. Together with intensified phenomenological explorations, these advances have led to the realization that challenges associated with weak couplings or the expected suppression factors for new physics can be overcome with such methods while maintaining a large degree of experimental control. Second, many of these measurements broaden the range of particle-physics phenomena and observables relative to the above set of more conventional methodologies. Combining such measurements with the conventional efforts above therefore casts both a wider and tighter net for possible effects originating from physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). This paper argues that this assessment points at a growing impact of such methods and measurements on high-energy physics, and therefore warrants direct support as particle-physics research. The Axion Resonant InterAction Detection Experiment (ARIADNE) is a collaborative effort to search for the QCD axion using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), where the axion acts as a mediator of spin-dependent forces between an unpolarized tungsten source mass and a sample of polarized helium-3 gas. Since the experiment involves precision measurement of a small magnetization, it relies on limiting ordinary magnetic noise with superconducting magnetic shielding. In addition to the shielding, proper characterization of the noise level from other sources is crucial. We investigate one such noise source in detail: the magnetic noise due to impurities and Johnson noise in the tungsten source mass., Comment: ARIADNE Collaboration

We present a search for possible spin dependent interactions of the neutron with matter through exchange of spin 1 bosons with axial vector couplings as envisioned in possible extensions of the Standard Model. This was sought using a slow neutron polarimeter that passed transversely polarized slow neutrons by unpolarized slabs of material arranged so that this interaction would tilt the plane of polarization and develop a component along the neutron momentum. The result for the rotation angle, $\phi'_{V_5} = [2.8\pm\,4.6(stat.)\pm\,4.0(sys.)]\times 10^{-5}~\mbox{rad/m}$ is consistent with zero. This result improves the upper bounds on the neutron-matter coupling $g_{A}^{2}$ from such an interaction by about three orders of magnitude for force ranges in the mm-$\mu$m regime., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

"Neutron Optics and Physics (NOP/ BL05)" at MLF in J-PARC is a beamline for studies of fundamental physics. The beamline is divided into three branches so that different experiments can be performed in parallel. These beam branches are being used to develop a variety of new projects. We are developing an experimental project to measure the neutron lifetime with total uncertainty of 1 s (0.1%). The neutron lifetime is an important parameter in elementary particle and astrophysics. Thus far, the neutron lifetime has been measured by several groups; however, different values are obtained from different measurement methods. This experiment is using a method with different sources of systematic uncertainty than measurements conducted to date. We are also developing a source of pulsed ultra-cold neutrons (UCNs) produced from a Doppler shifter are available at the unpolarized beam branch. We are developing a time focusing device for UCNs, a so called "rebuncher", which can increase UCN density from a pulsed UCN source. At the low divergence beam branch, an experiment to search an unknown intermediate force with nanometer range is performed by measuring the angular dependence of neutron scattering by noble gases. Finally the beamline is also used for the research and development of optical elements and detectors. For example, a position sensitive neutron detector that uses emulsion to achieve sub-micrometer resolution is currently under development. Since the ALMA North America Prototype Antenna was awarded to the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO), SAO and the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy & Astrophysics (ASIAA) are working jointly to relocate the antenna to Greenland. This paper shows the status of the antenna retrofit and the work carried out after the recommissioning and subsequent disassembly of the antenna at the VLA has taken place. The next coming months will see the start of the antenna reassembly at Thule Air Base. These activities are expected to last until the fall of 2017 when commissioning should take place. In parallel, design, fabrication and testing of the last components are taking place in Taiwan.

Neutron interferometry enables precision measurements that are typically operated within elaborate, multi-layered facilities which provide substantial shielding from environmental noise. These facilities are necessary to maintain the coherence requirements in a perfect crystal neutron interferometer which is extremely sensitive to local environmental conditions such as temperature gradients across the interferometer, external vibrations, and acoustic waves. The ease of operation and breadth of applications of perfect crystal neutron interferometry would greatly benefit from a mode of operation which relaxes these stringent isolation requirements. Here, the INDEX Collaboration and National Institute of Standards and Technology demonstrates the functionality of a neutron interferometer in vacuum and characterize the use of a compact vacuum chamber enclosure as a means to isolate the interferometer from spatial temperature gradients and time-dependent temperature fluctuations. The vacuum chamber is found to have no depreciable effect on the performance of the interferometer (contrast) while improving system stability, thereby showing that it is feasible to replace large temperature isolation and control systems with a compact vacuum enclosure for perfect crystal neutron interferometry.

The ALMA North America Prototype Antenna was awarded to the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) in 2011. SAO and the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy & Astrophysics (ASIAA), SAO's main partner for this project, are working jointly to relocate the antenna to Greenland to carry out millimeter and submillimeter VLBI observations. This paper presents the work carried out on upgrading the antenna to enable operation in the Arctic climate by the GLT Team to make this challenging project possible, with an emphasis on the unexpected telescope components that had to be either redesigned or changed. Five-years of inactivity, with the antenna laying idle in the desert of New Mexico, coupled with the extreme weather conditions of the selected site in Greenland have it necessary to significantly refurbish the antenna. We found that many components did need to be replaced, such as the antenna support cone, the azimuth bearing, the carbon fiber quadrupod, the hexapod, the HVAC, the tiltmeters, the antenna electronic enclosures housing servo and other drive components, and the cables. We selected Vertex, the original antenna manufacturer, for the main design work, which is in progress. The next coming months will see the major antenna components and subsystems shipped to a site of the US East Coast for test-fitting the major antenna components, which have been retrofitted. The following step will be to ship the components to Greenland to carry out VLBI and single dish observations. The possible existence of short-range forces between unpolarized and polarized spin-1/2 particles has attracted the attention of physicists for decades. These forces are predicted in various theories and provide a possible new source for parity (P) and time reversal (T) symmetry violation. We use an ensemble of polarized 3He gas in a cell with a 250 um thickness glass window to search for a force from scalar boson exchange over a sub-millimeter ranges. This interaction would produce a NMR frequency shift as an unpolarized mass is moved near and far from the polarized ensemble. We report a new upper bound on the product g_{s}g_{p}^{n} of the scalar couplings to the fermions in the unpolarized mass, and the pseudoscalar coupling of the polarized neutron in the 3He nucleus for force ranges from 1e-4 to 1e-2 m, which corresponds to a mass range of 2e-3 to 2e-5 eV for the scalar boson., Comment: 3 figures, submitted to PRL

Various theories beyond the Standard Model predict new particles with masses in the sub-eV range with very weak couplings to ordinary matter. A $P$-odd, $T$-odd, spin-dependent interaction between polarized and unpolarized matter is one such possibility. Such a monopole-dipole interaction can be induced by the exchange of spin-$0$ particles. The presence of a possible monopole-dipole interaction between fermion spins and unpolarized matter would cause an decreased transverse spin relaxation time $T_{2}$ for a confined gas of polarized nuclei. By reanalyzing previously existing data on the spin relaxation times of polarized $^3$He in gas cells with pressure in the millibar range and applying the well-established theory of spin relaxation for magnetic field gradients to gradients in a possible monopole-dipole field, we present new laboratory constraints on the strength and range of such an interaction.
