Small format, medium resolution CCD cameras are at present widely used for industrial metrology applications. Large format, high resolution CCD cameras are primarily in use for scientific applications, but in due course should increase both the range of applications and the object space accuracy achievable by close range measurement. Slow scan, cooled scientific CCD cameras provide the additional benefit of additional quantisation levels which enables improved radiometric resolution. The calibration of all types of CCD cameras is necessary in order to characterize the geometry of the sensors and lenses. A number of different types of CCD cameras have been calibrated a the NASA Langley Research Center using self calibration and a small test object. The results of these calibration tests will be described, with particular emphasis on the differences between standard CCD video cameras and scientific slow scan CCD cameras.

Some techniques for laboratory calibration and characterization of video cameras used with frame grabber boards are presented. A laser-illuminated displaced reticle technique (with camera lens removed) is used to determine the camera/grabber effective horizontal and vertical pixel spacing as well as the angle of nonperpendicularity of the axes. The principal point of autocollimation and point of symmetry are found by illuminating the camera with an unexpanded laser beam, either aligned with the sensor or lens. Lens distortion and the principal distance are determined from images of a calibration plate suitably aligned with the camera. Calibration and characterization results for several video cameras are presented. Differences between these laboratory techniques and test range and plumb line calibration are noted.

This digital system improves an earlier video model deformation system that used high-resolution tube cameras and required the manual measurement of targets on video hardcopy images. The new system eliminates both the vibration-induced distortion associated with tube cameras and the manual readup of video images necessary in the earlier version. Camera calibration and data reduction procedures necessary to convert pixel image plane data from two cameras into wing deflections are presented. Laboratory tests to establish the uncertainty of the system with the geometry to be used are described.

Optical diagnostic techniques have not been as successful in the 0.3-Meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel as in conventional wind tunnels. This paper describes a simple shadowgraph experiment which allowed evacuation of the optical paths outside the test section. The results show that refractive index variations induced by temperature gradients outside the test section account for most of the image degradation. Earlier reports had erroneously attributed this degradation to inhomogeneities in the test section. Evacuation of the paths leading to and from the test section significantly improves the quality of flow visualization.

Having corrected for electronic distortion, the data are further corrected for lens distortion using the plumb line method. Examples of close-range photogrammetric data taken with video cameras corrected for both electronic and optical lens distortion are presented.

The photogrammetric approach was chosen because of its inherent rapid data recording of the entire object field. Video cameras are used to acquire data instead of film cameras due to the inaccessibility of cameras which must be housed within the cryogenic, high pressure plenum of this facility. Data reduction procedures and the results of tunnel tests at the NTF are presented.

Methods for increasing the radiant in light sheets used for vapor screen set-ups were investigated. Both high-pressure mercury arc lamps and lasers were considered. Pulsed operation of the air-cooled 1-kW lamps increased the light output but decreased reliability. An ellipsoidal mirror improved the output of the air-cooled lamps by concentrating the light but increased the complexity of the housing. Water-cooled-4-kW lamps coupled with high-aperture Fresnel lenses provided reasonable improvements over the air-cooled lamps. Fanned laser beams measurements of scattered light versus dew point made in conjunction with successful attempts to control the fluid injection. A number of smoke generators are described and test results comparing smoke and vapor screens are shown. Finally, one test included a periscope system to relay the image to a camera outside the flow.

Video cameras are used to acquire data instead of film cameras due to the inaccessibility of cameras which must be housed within the cryogenic, high pressure plenum of this facility. A rudimentary theory section is followed by a description of the video-based system and control measures required to protect cameras from the hostile environment. Preliminary results obtained with the same camera placement as planned for NTF are presented and plans for facility testing with a specially designed test wing are discussed.

The optical quality of gas in a cryogenic wind tunnel was determined by observing Sayce targets through different pathlengths of the medium. The data were used to determine the square wave response of the test gas. At conditions corresponding to 15 times ambient density, considerable decrease in response to higher spatial frequencies was noted even in the absence of flow. Under flow conditions, vibrations further degraded the response. The results are interpreted in terms of possible photogrammetric approaches to measure model deformation in large cryogenic facilities such as the National Transonic Facility.

Some of the uses of holographic interferometry at Langley Research Center both for flow visualization and for density field determinations are described and tests in cryogenic flows at the Langley 0.3-Meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel are discussed. Experimental and theoretical fringe shift data are compared.

Viewing problems associated with the measurement of model deformation in cryogenic wind tunnels are discussed. Tests were conducted in the Langley 0.3-Meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel to assess viewing capabilities thru the flow field. The effects of condensation and turbulent boundary layers are discussed and a modelling procedure for image degradation is described.

The use of a photographic pyrometer for nonintrusive measurement of high temperature surfaces in a wind tunnel test is described. The advantages of the pyrometer for measuring surfaces whose unique shape makes use of thermocouples difficult are pointed out. The use of computer operated densitometers or optical processors for the data reduction is recommended.

Moire fringe methods for detecting loose space shuttle tiles were investigated with a test panel consisting of a loose tile surrounded by four securely bonded tiles. The test panel was excited from 20 to 150 Hz with in-plane sinusoidal acceleration of 2 g (peak). If the shuttle orbiter can be subjected to periodic excitation of 1 to 2 g (peak) and rigid-body periodic displacements do not mask the change in the Moire pattern due to tile looseness, then the use of projected Moire fringes to detect out-of-plane rockin appears to be the most viable indicator of tile looseness since no modifications to the tiles are required.

The paper presents the measurements of linear triatomic carbon opacity (C3) made in a graphite tube furnace to extend the wavelength range of Brewer and Engelke (1962) to the 280-600 nm range. An electrooptical method was used to determine C3 absorption in argon at 2720 to 3060 K; a quartic polynomial regression expression was derived to provide a complete temperature profile from pyrometer measurements. The C3 spectra were plotted for several opacity levels. It was concluded that the extension of the spectral range to the near u.v. levels made it easier to identify C3 particles.

The mutual diffusion of two reacting gases is examined which takes place in a bath of inert gas atoms. Solutions are obtained between concentric spheres, each sphere acting as a source for one of the reactants. The calculational model is used to illustrate severe number density gradients observed in absorption experiments with alkali vapor. Severe gradients result when sq root k/D R is approximately 5 where k, D, and R are respectively the second order rate constant, the multicomponent diffusion constant, and the geometrical dimension of the experiment.

An electric arc heater was operated at 800 amperes and 100,000 pa (1 atm) with hydrogen, helium, and two mixtures of hydrogen and helium. A VUV-scanning monochromator was used to record the spectra from an end view while a second spectrometer was used to determine the plasma temperature using hydrogen continuum radiation at 562 nm. Except for pure helium, the plasma temperature was found to be too low to produce significant helium radiation, and the measured spectra were primarily the hydrogen spectra with the highest intensity in the pure hydrogen case. A radiation computer code was used to compute the spectra for comparison to the measurements and to extend the study to simulation of outer planet entry radiation. Conductive cooling prevented ablation of phenolic carbon material samples mounted inside the arc heater during a cursory attempt to produce radiation absorption by ablation gases.

Argon ion laser lines are used to excite fluorescence in a mixture of cesium and xenon. Excimer band fluorescence is observed at higher pressures (about 1 atm) while at lower pressures (several torr) a diffuse fluorescence due to the cesium dimer is observed whose character changes with exciting wavelength. The excimer fluorescence is shown to be directly related to the location of the exciting wavelength within previously measured Cs/Xe line shapes. This fact suggests that the excimer systems may be efficiently pumped through these line shapes. Qualitative energy-level schemes are proposed to explain the observations in both the excimer and dimer systems.

Line shapes for cesium broadened by xenon and neopentane have been measured in an absorption cell. The growth of the red satellites, both primary and secondary, were studied on the first five principal series doublets and on the first S-D forbidden doublet. An inversion scheme based on a nearest-neighbor density was employed to invert the measured line shapes and obtain difference potential estimates. It is apparent from the inversion scheme that minor inflections in the difference potential map into strong features in the frequency plane and that contrary to popular assumption, absolute extrema may not be necessary for satellite interpretation. Strength effects observed on the forbidden satellites also demonstrate that the radial dependence of the dipole moment must be accounted for in certain cases.

A description is given and calibration procedures are presented for an apparatus that is used to simulate aerodynamic radiant heating during planetary entry. The primary function of the apparatus is to simulate the spectral distribution of shock layer radiation and to determine absorption effects of simulated ablation products which are injected into the stagnation region flow field. An electric arc heater is used to heat gas mixtures that represent the planetary atmospheres of interest. Spectral measurements are made with a vacuum ultraviolet scanning monochromator.

Temperature profiles were measured for agron atmospheric pressure by using absolute line and continuum intensity and were compared with stark width and shift measurements. A detailed analysis of the engineering aspects of setting up for Abel inverting deta photographically is presented. The merits of using photographic detection and of using continuum radiation for temperature profile analysis are discussed. The importance of empirically determining the optical depth is emphasized by discrepancies between measured (two-path) and calculated estimates.
