Malaria and iron deficiency (ID) are common and interrelated public health problems in African children. Observational data suggest that interrupting malaria transmission reduces the prevalence of ID1. To test the hypothesis that malaria might cause ID, we used sickle cell trait (HbAS, rs334 ), a genetic variant that confers specific protection against malaria2, as an instrumental variable in Mendelian randomization analyses. HbAS was associated with a 30% reduction in ID among children living in malaria-endemic countries in Africa (n = 7,453), but not among individuals living in malaria-free areas (n = 3,818). Genetically predicted malaria risk was associated with an odds ratio of 2.65 for ID per unit increase in the log incidence rate of malaria. This suggests that an intervention that halves the risk of malaria episodes would reduce the prevalence of ID in African children by 49%.

Statistics - Methodology - Abstract
In this paper we set out general principles and develop geostatistical methods for the analysis of data from spatio-temporally referenced prevalence surveys. Our objective is to provide a tutorial guide that can be used in order to identify parsimonious geostatistical models for prevalence mapping. A general variogram-based Monte Carlo procedure is proposed to check the validity of the modelling assumptions. We describe and contrast likelihood-based and Bayesian methods of inference, showing how to account for parameter uncertainty under each of the two paradigms. We also describe extensions of the standard model for disease prevalence that can be used when stationarity of the spatio-temporal covariance function is not supported by the data. We discuss how to define predictive targets and argue that exceedance probabilities provide one of the most effective ways to convey uncertainty in prevalence estimates. We describe statistical software for the visualization of spatio-temporal predictive summaries of prevalence through interactive animations. Finally, we illustrate an application to historical malaria prevalence data from 1334 surveys conducted in Senegal between 1905 and 2014., Comment: Extended version of the paper in press on International Statistical Review

- Abstract
A series of polycarbinol-siloxane surfactants with variations of two to six hydroxyl groups in the head structure and tri- and tetrasiloxane tail structures is synthesized, characterized and tested for foaming ability and fire suppression. The synthesis is practical, involving two steps, and produces products in high yield with good purity. The trisiloxane surfactants with 5 or 6 hydroxyl groups have sufficient water solubility, critical micelle concentrations, and display foaming ability levels to be effective in fire suppression testing. The tetrasiloxane surfactant with six hydroxyl groups was less soluble by a factor of 10 and did not exhibit sufficient foaming for effective fire suppression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Altered mental status (AMS) is a syndrome posing substantial burden to patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) in both prevalence and intensity. Unfortunately, ICU patients are often diagnosed merely with syndromic labels, particularly the duo of toxic–metabolic encephalopathy (TME) and delirium. Before applying a nonspecific diagnostic label, every patient with AMS should be evaluated for specific, treatable diseases affecting the central nervous system. This review offers a structured approach to increase the probability of identifying specific causal etiologies of AMS in the critically ill. We provide tips for bedside assessment in the challenging ICU environment and review the role and yield of common neurodiagnostic procedures, including specialized bedside modalities of diagnostic utility in unstable patients. We briefly review two common etiologies of TME (uremic and septic encephalopathies), and then review a selection of high-yield toxicologic, neurologic, and infectious causes of AMS in the ICU, with an emphasis on those that require deliberate consideration as they elude routine screening. The final section lays out an approach to the various etiologies of AMS in the critically ill. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the longstanding problems in universal algebra is the question of which finite lattices are isomorphic to the congruence lattices of finite algebras. This question can be phrased as which finite lattices can be represented as lattices of equivalence relations on finite sets closed under certain first order formulas. We generalize this question to a different collection of first-order formulas, giving examples to demonstrate that our new question is distinct. We then prove that every lattice $\m M_n$ can be represented in this new way. [This is an extended version of a paper submitted to \emph{Algebra Universalis}.], Comment: 6 pages. COLONY collapse disorder of honeybees ,MICROSPORIDIOSIS ,FUNGI ,INTRACELLULAR pathogens ,MICROSPORIDIA - Abstract
Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasites of the Fungal Kingdom that cause widespread infections in nature, with important effects on invertebrates involved in food production systems. The two microsporidian species Vairimorpha (Nosema) ceranae (and the less common Vairimorpha (Nosema) apis) can cause individual disease in honey bees and contribute to colony collapse. The efficacy, safety, and availability of fumagillin, the only drug currently approved to treat microsporidia infection in bees, is uncertain. In this review, we will discuss some of the most promising alternative strategies for the mitigation of Vairimorpha spp. with an emphasis on infection by V. ceranae, now the dominant species infecting bees. We will focus on pharmacologic interventions where the mechanism of action is known and examine both pathogen‐directed and host‐directed approaches. As limiting toxicity to host cells has been especially emphasized in treating bees that are already facing numerous stressors, strategies that disrupt pathogen‐specific targets may be especially advantageous. Therefore, efforts to increase the knowledge and tools for facilitating the discovery of such targets and pharmacologic agents directed against them should be prioritized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
A detailed study is presented of the expected performance of the ATLAS detector. The reconstruction of tracks, leptons, photons, missing energy and jets is investigated, together with the performance of b-tagging and the trigger. The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes, within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined. The study comprises a series of notes based on simulations of the detector and physics processes, with particular emphasis given to the data expected from the first years of operation of the LHC at CERN.

50. Accidental Injuries among Children in Day Care Centers and Family Day Care Homes.

- Abstract
For this study, information was obtained about accidential injuries among children in day care centers (DCC) and family day care homes (DCH) in North Carolina. An Accident Survey Questionnaire was used to report injuries that required treatment by a staff member, doctor, or nurse. Results of data analyses showed that: (1) falls were the leading cause of injuries in DCCs, and falls and human bites were the leading causes of injuries in DCHs; (2) the equipment most frequently associated with DCC injuries was playground climbing structures; (3) injuries for DCCs and DCHs were almost evenly divided among outdoor and indoor locations; (4) abrasions and cuts were the most commonly reported injuries overall; (5) the head and upper extremities were the most frequently injured parts; and (6) the two most hazardous days of the week were Thursday and Wednesday for both DCC and DCH. Results showed injury rates to be almost twice as high in DCHs as in DCCs; however, DCHs had a better record regarding severity of injuries. Data from previous investigations indicates that children may be safer in day care than they are at home or in other settings. (SH)
