My ongoing research is concerned with the experiences of persons who migrated to Gothenburg from Salla and other municipalities in the province of Lapland in the 1960s-70s. I am examining the environment in which they grew up in Finnish Lapland, and the way this background was reflected in their lifestyle in their new homeland. I am further looking into their key experiences of being a Gothenburg Finn.7 One of these experiences is the topic for this paper: vacations in Finland. The focus is on the thoughts and experiences at individual level, and in my analyses I will be trying to piece together their worldview." The study is based almost exclusively on interview material. I have at my disposal 62 interviews, half of which I made myself. The interviewees had migrated to Sweden at different times. The one who had spent the longest uninterrupted period in Sweden had gone there in 1955 and the most recent in 1979. The majority of the interviewees had migrated to Sweden between 1962 and 1974, and 1967-1970 were peak years. Although I did not know the year of migration when I fixed the interview, the data well represents the peak years in the statistics. The same applies to the age of the interviewees on migration: the youngest woman had migrated to Sweden without her parents when she was 14, and the oldest at the age of 37. The ages of the men on migration varied between 16 and 39. Most of the interviewees had been under the age of 25 when they migrated to Sweden. In addition to the interviewees, I have used material in the press, oral history collected by The Archives of The Finnish Minority in Sweden in Stockholm, and the diary of and letters received in Sweden by a young girl who migrated from Salla to Gothenburg. Ruotsalainen etnologi Alf Arvidsson on hyödyntänyt riittiteoriaa tarkastellessaan elämäkerrallisessa haastattelussa esiin tulevia kerronnallisia kokonaisuuksia,joiden aiheena on muuttamiseen liittyvä siirtymä. Tällaiset, kertojan kannalta merkittäviä muutoksia sisältävät kertomukset muodostuvat samanlaisista jaksoista kuin siirtymäriitit. Ne rakentuvat irtautumisesta, välitilasta ja liittymisestä uuteen. Tehdessäni haastatteluja 1960–1970-luvulla Göteborgiin muuttaneiden lappilaisten keskuudessa huomasin, että myös heidän elämänkulkujaan voi tarkastella irtautumisen, välitilan ja uuteen liittymisen kautta. Muuttopäätös ja muuttomatka edustavat irtautumista ja alkuvaiheet työn ja kodin etsinnässä uudessa kotimaassa edustavat välitilaa. Liittyminen uuteen on monilla ollut pitkä prosessi, joka on saattanut päättyä paluumuuttoon. Silloin ei liittymistä ole tapahtunut. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastelen yhtä ryhmää ruotsinsuomalaisia, Göteborgissa 1960-80-luvuilla asuneita perheellisiä, työssäkäyviä, Lapin läänin alueelta kotoisin olevia naisia. Artikkeli perustuu Göteborgissa keräämääni haastatteluaineistoon. Olen poiminut keräämästäni aineistosta nimenomaan ne haastattelut, joissa haastateltava on ollut kodin ulkopuolella työssä käyvä nainen ja hänellä on ollut alle kouluikäisiä lapsia. Kotona työskennelleitä naisia ei tässä artikkelissa käsitellä, ei myöskään naisia, joilla ei ollut lapsia tai joiden lapset olivat Ruotsiin muutettaessa tai työelämään siirryttäessä jo kouluikäisiä. Tarkoitus on pohtia, miten naiset selvisivät jokapäiväisestä elämästään palkkatyön ja perheenäidin rooleissa. Aineistoa lähestyn viidentoista elämäkertaesimerkin kautta. Henkilöiden nimet on muutettu, mutta paikannimiä ja työnantajien nimiä ei. Elämäkerrat esitetään kronologisessa järjestyksessä haastateltavan syntymävuoden mukaan. Ensimmäinen kertoja on syntynyt 1930-luvun alussa ja viimeinen 1960-luvun puolivälissä. Ajallisesti kuvaukset sijoittuvat 1960-luvulta 1990-luvulle pääpainon ollessa 1970-luvussa., Elämän muotoja. Avsikten med denna artikel är att visa på och analysera drag som kännetecknade levnadssättet för den yrkesgrupp, som uppstod som en följd av skogsindustrins expansion, i skogsbygden kring Kemi älv i det finska Lappland. Det viktigaste källmaterialet för denna undersökning är de traditionsuppteckningar som insamlats bland skogs- och flottningsarbetare. Jag har själv gjort intervjuer, och dessutom har jag haft tillgång till material som samlats in bland skogs- och flottningsarbetare i form av frågelistor och skrivartävlingar. De intervjuer jag själv har gjort är från 1983-1995. Vid Åbo universitet samlades skogs- och flottningsarbetares minnen åren 1959 och i960, i Finska Litteratursällskapet år 1969 och i Rovala, som sysslar med settlementsarbete, åren 1987 och 1989. The Finnish lumberjacks engaged in the felling and floating of timber also had ways of indicating their status in the community: their dress, kit and nicknames provided a clue to their skills and social status, and the work site observed an invisible social "town plan".4 The way people spoke and their use of time and space on the logging and floating work sites of Lapland were governed by many unwritten laws to which the new worker gradually became socialised. Here I wish to concentrate on one aspect of the manifestation of social identity, namely what members of the community could deduce from a person's outward appearance. What did a hat, scarf, trousers or kit bag say about their bearer? The group chosen for examination consists of loggers and floaters working in Finnish Lapland in the early 20th century. As my source material I have used interviews, oral history recorded in archives, works of literature and photographs. None of the sources give a clear indication of outward appearance; instead the information is hidden in references and clues that are difficult to find, as the social history written into subordinate clauses. Metsä- ja uittotyöntekijöillä on erityinen asema kansatieteen historiassa. Tukkilaiset ovat sahaja rautatietyöläisten ohella ensimmäinen ryhmä, jonka talonpoikaiskulttuuriin viehättyneet kansatieteilijät hyväksyivät tutkimuksensa kohteeksi. Agraarin ihannointi oli kuitenkin vielä niin vahvasti läsnä, että näiden ammattiryhmien tutkimisen tarpeellisuutta perusteltiin nimenomaan sillä, että heidän elämäntapansa oli agraarin ja modernin välimaastossa. Keskeinen henkilö suomalaisen kansatieteen näköalan laajentumisessa oli Ruotsissa väitellyt professori Ilmar Talve. Virkaanastujaisesitelmässään vuonna 1963 hän viitoitti tien kaupunkikansatieteen ja työväenkulttuurin tutkimukselle. Mutta miksi Kuningasjätkä? En lainkaan ihmettele sitä, että Rovaniemen elokuvateatterin sali on illasta toiseen täynnä. Onhan Kuningasjätkässä aiheena isien ja isoisien ja ehkä omakin työ. Mutta se, että helsinkiläisnuoret (ja vanhat) katsovat Kuningasjätkää on vaikeampi selittää. Ilmiötä tuskin kannattaa selittää kuluneilla klisheillä suomalaisten metsäsuhteesta. Pikemminkin elokuvan viehätyksen taustalta voi löytää suomalaiseen urbaaniin kulttuuriin olennaisesti kuuluvan juonteen, maaseudun nostalgisoinnin. Tukkilaisten myyttinen asema suomalaisessa yhteisössä on kaikille tuttu. Kuningasjätkässä voi nauttia elokuvaan kuuluvan sankarihahmon lisäksi maaseudun maisemista ja hiljaisuudesta. While writing my thesis on floating in Finnish Lapland, I was amazed to discover that the first floating workers' dwellings built in Lapland bore very little resemblance to the local rural buildings. Knowing that forestry had been - especially in its early days when virgin resource areas had to be found - an international industry, I started looking for parallels in the camp architecture of other areas. In my paper I will first take a general look at forestry in the northern regions with particular reference to migration, and then debate the question of how the migratory character of the forest industry was reflected in the material culture of forest work, especially the dwellings of forest workers., Also published in the book The Road Taken more...
