18. Benthic Invertebrates on the Move: A Tale of Ocean Warming and Sediment Carbon Storage

Abstract

Ongoing effects of climate change create a dual challenge of shifting distributions of organisms and concerns about the fate of organic carbon in nature. Marine sediments store vast amounts of organic carbon, but the fate of that material hinges on the biology of organisms associated with the seafloor and how they influence rates of carbon decomposition and burial. Shifts in large megafauna that disturb and thus help to oxygenate sediments could have important ramifications regarding whether sediments release or store carbon for long periods of time. We consider snow crab and lobster, two commercially important seafloor species in the Northeastern Atlantic, and the potential effects of ongoing changes in their distributions and that of their fisheries for future climate scenarios. These ongoing biogeographic shifts, considered in tandem with areas of seabed legislatively protected from fishing impacts and thus not confounded by cumulative effects of fishing gear disturbance, offer an opportunity to study how newly arrived species that disturb large areas of the seafloor might influence the global carbon cycle.

Abstract

Global biodiversity policy is at a crossroads. Recent global assessments of living nature (1, 2) and climate (3) show worsening trends and a rapidly narrowing window for action. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has recently announced that none of the 20 Aichi targets for biodiversity it set in 2010 has been reached and only six have been partially achieved (4). Against this backdrop, nations are now negotiating the next generation of the CBD's global goals [see supplementary materials (SM)], due for adoption in 2021, which will frame actions of governments and other actors for decades to come. In response to the goals proposed in the draft post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) made public by the CBD (5), we urge negotiators to consider three points that are critical if the agreed goals are to stabilize or reverse nature's decline. First, multiple goals are required because of nature's complexity, with different facets—genes, populations, species, deep evolutionary history, ecosystems, and their contributions to people—having markedly different geographic distributions and responses to human drivers. Second, interlinkages among these facets mean that goals must be defined and developed holistically rather than in isolation, with potential to advance multiple goals simultaneously and minimize trade-offs between them. Third, only the highest level of ambition in setting each goal, and implementing all goals in an integrated manner, will give a realistic chance of stopping—and beginning to reverse—biodiversity loss by 2050.

Abstract

The article explores the use of otolith geochemistry as a natural tag and factors that affects its success. The authors observed the use of otolith geochemistry on juvenile rainbow smelt Osmerus mordax with the use of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and isotope ratio monitoring mass spectrometry. They found that there was variation in otolith element ratios and isotope ratios among locations and were able to get an 83% cross-validated accuracy through quadratic discriminant function analysis. They conclude that the result of the study prove the link between geochemical otolith signatures with estuarine structure.

Abstract

The article reports on the result of a study which investigates the effect of moderate flow on postlarval swimming behaviour and settlement of American lobster Homarus americanus postlarvae. Result shows that postlarvae in flow were more likely to encounter bottom substrate than postlarvae in still water. In addition, behavioural observations indicates that postlarval behaviour is modified by flow. It suggests that spatial and temporal differences in flow may affect the lobster settlement behaviour and should therefore be considered when examining and predicting settlement patterns.

34. Canadian Healthy Oceans Network (CHONe): An Academic–Government Partnership to Develop Scientific Guidelines for Conservation and Sustainable Usage of Marine Biodiversity

Abstract

The Canadian Healthy Oceans Network (CHONe) research program formed to unite leading academic and government researchers with managers from Canada's national resource agencies to address an urgent need for better scientific information on marine biodiversity in Canada's Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic waters. Specifically, the network is producing diverse scientific products to inform policy commitments in conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity resources. A common disconnect between science-driven research and policy application results in a dearth of science information relevant to specific decisions that cannot wait for knowledge to accumulate. To narrow this gap, CHONe research structures around three interlinking and integrated themes of marine biodiversity, ecosystem function, and population connectivity. CHONe products span from baseline maps, databases, and barcodes as tools to understand processes and monitor future change; spatial and temporal predictive tools to maximize knowledge on biodiversity patterns; analytical and sampling tools to characterize and assess biodiversity and habitat relationships, decision-making frameworks for sustainable, integrated ocean management; new findings on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning relationships; to specific advice, data input, models, and frameworks for current ocean planning efforts. El programa de la Red Canadiense de Ecosistemas Saludables (RCES) fue concebido para unificar a líderes académicos e investigadores de gobierno con manejadores de recursos de las agencias federales del Canadá, con el fin de lograr un mejor entendimiento de la información científica concerniente a la biodiversidad marina en el Pacífico, Atlántico y Ártico canadienses. En específico, la red está generando diversos productos para informar los compromisos políticos en temas de conservación y uso sostenible de la biodiversidad marina. La desconexión entre la investigación científica dirigida y su aplicación en políticas públicas, resulta en una falta de información científica relevante para tomar decisiones cuya resolución no puede esperar a la acumulación de conocimientos. Para reducir esta brecha, la investigación llevada a cabo en la RCES se estructura en tres tópicos integrados y entrelazados: biodiversidad marina, funcionamiento de ecosistemas y conectividad entre poblaciones. Los productos derivados de la RCES van desde mapas de líneas base, bases de datos y códigos de barras como herramienta para comprender procesos y monitorear cambios en el futuro; herramientas predictivas para maximizar el conocimiento de los patrones espaciales y temporales de la diversidad, herramientas analíticas y de muestreo para caracterizar y evaluar la relación entre hábitat y biodiversidad; marcos conceptuales para la toma de decisiones en el contexto del manejo integral y sustentable del océano, nuevos hallazgos sobre biodiversidad y funcionamiento de ecosistemas; hasta la emisión de sugerencias específicas, suplemento de datos, modelos y sistemas de información para apoyar los esfuerzos de ordenación marina.

Abstract

Frontiers in Marine Science launched the Marine Ecosystems Ecology (FMARS-MEE) section in 2014, with a paper that identified eight grand challenges for the discipline (Borja, 2014). Since then, this section has published a total of 370 papers, including 336 addressing aspects of those challenges. As editors of the journal, with a wide range of marine ecology expertise, we felt it was timely to evaluate research advances related to those challenges; and to update the scope of the section to reflect the grand challenges we envision for the next 10 years. This output will match with the United Nations (UN) Decade on Oceans Science for Sustainable Development (DOSSD; Claudet et al., 2020), UN Decade of Ecosystems Restoration (DER; Young and Schwartz, 2019), and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs; Visbeck et al., 2014). info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion
