The Science in Action series is designed to teach practical science concepts to special-needs students. It is intended to develop students' problem-solving skills by teaching them to observe, record, analyze, conclude, and predict. This document contains a student workbook which deals with basic principles of physical science. Six separate units include: (1) what is energy; (2) burning fuels; (3) fuels from under the ground; (4) electricity; (5) solving energy problems; and (6) what can you do. The units consist of basic introductory information and questions, worksheets, a self-checking quiz, and instructions for experiments. A cumulative test is provided at the end of the workbook, along with a glossary. The teachers guide (which is included) explains how to use the workbook, together with teaching suggestions and enrichment activities for each unit. (TW)

This assembly program, designed for presentation at schools or community centers, is a form of community outreach which is an economically viable way of increasing the impact of limited personnel and resources as well as enhancing school science curricula in new and exciting ways. The program contains demonstrations and audience participation techniques that actively involve people in learning about science. This presenter's guide includes a script covering the topics of electricity and magic, electric cells, solar cells, electric generators, static electricity and transformers. Also include are descriptions of the experiments, an outline of the demonstrations, suggestions for the transportation of and setting up of materials, and hints on large-group presentation techniques. Demonstrations and materials include: fiber optics model of an atom; manual generator; wind, water and steam generator; balloon demonstration; and D-C transformers. (JHR)

The 21st century has seen a growing movement in the United States towards the adoption of engineering and technology as a complement to science education. Motivated by this shift, this article offers insights into engineering education for grades P-12, based on a landscape review of 263 empirical research studies spanning the two decades from January 2000 to June 2021. These insights are organized around three core themes: (1) students’ understandings, skills, and attitudes about engineering and technology; (2) effective methods of P-12 engineering education; and (3) benefits of P-12 engineering education. The insights are captured in the form of evidence-based claims summarized as a set of ten findings. The findings start with the recognition that students at all age levels in the United States—though not in many other countries—have narrow conceptions of technology and engineering. A key finding is that for students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, it is important to develop their interest at an early age. Several findings address effective strategies for engaging students in engineering, both in schools and in afterschool and summer programs. These include generalizable teaching methods suitable across a wide range of educators and students, as well as topical approaches around specific themes such as the design of robots, or biomedical devices. One of the most encouraging findings is that multiple methods have successfully addressed a major social inequity: improving the attitudes, STEM skills, and career aspirations of girls, students of color, and students from low-income families. The last group of findings addresses the benefits of engineering education including not only increased knowledge and skills, but also lifelong skills such as teamwork, communication, and creativity, as well as persistence, motivation, self-confidence, and STEM identity. The concept of controlled experimentation is a skill that all students leaving high school should master. Teachers often attempt to find exciting and fun methods to expose students to this valuable skill. This science activity guide allows students to construct model rockets in an attempt to improve their abilities to conduct controlled experiments. (ZWH)
