Abstract

This article describes the possible factors that can introduce discrepancies between measurements and three-dimensional EM simulations of millimeter-wave (mm-wave) antennas. The effects of the choice of the simulation solver, the relative permittivity and the homogeneity of the substrate material, the manufacturing tolerance, and the measurement errors are discussed. It is concluded that a fair comparison between measurements and simulations of mm-wave antennas can only be made if all these possible causes of discrepancies are taken into account. 9. Polymer optical fibre network for feeding wireless LAN antenna stations

Abstract

A novel method is presented to transport microwave signals over graded-index polymer optical fibre (GIPOF) networks feeding radio access points in high-capacity wireless LANs. It relies on optical frequency multiplying, by sweeping a laser wavelength over a number of free spectral ranges of a simple periodic optical filter at the access points. It enables a cost-effective system implementation, and easy upgrading by offering data signal transparency. Microwave frequencies at several tens of GHz carrying multi-point digital data signal constellation formats such as QPSK and QAM are achievable in GIPOF networks with a reach of several hunderds of metres.

Abstract

Using a novel optical frequency multiplication technique, microwave signal carriers exceeding 20-GHz are delivered to a significantly simplified remote radio access unit fed by a multimode fibre link having modal bandwidth below 2-GHz. Measurement results show that the remotely generated carriers have very narrow linewidths below 20-Hz. Thus existing in-building silica multimode fibre infrastructure, and the emerging polymer optical fibres may be used to not only transport fixed data services such as gigabit Ethernet but also to transparently distribute in-doors, signals of present WLANs as well as future broadband WLAN services leading to significant system-wide cost reduction

Abstract

A novel system concept is presented to transport microwave signals over an in-house graded index polymer optical fibre network, in order to feed the radio access points in high-capacity wireless LANs. By employing optical frequency multiplying, the network's intrinsically limited bandwidth is overcome. The feasibility of this concept to carry data at several hundreds of Mbit/s speed for various microwave signal formats at carrier frequencies in the tens of GHz range is shown. The concept enables cost-effective system implementation and easy upgrading by offering data signal transparency. It can readily be integrated with other system technologies such as wired Gigabit Ethernet in a single multi-service in-house polymer optical fibre network.

Abstract

Background/purpose: Millimeter-wave reflectometry is a potentially interesting technique to analyze the human skin in vivo in order to determine the water content locally in the skin. Purpose of this work is to investigate the possibility of skin-tissue differentiation. In addition, it addresses the influence of the pressure of the probe on the skin, the influence of an air gap between probe and skin as well as the influence of a bandage between probe and skin., Methodology: Reflection coefficients at various positions on the skin are measured in the 40-60 GHz range and the examined effects are quantified in terms of magnitude and phase of the reflection coefficient. Also, the possibility to perform tissue differentiation is quantified., Results: It is indicated that differentiation of skin tissue can be performed on the basis of the magnitude of the reflection coefficient provided that no air gap exists between probe and skin. The influence of probe pressure can be substantial, in particular for phase measurements. The presence of an air gap between probe and skin reduces the differentiation capability of the considered measurement technique, whereas a bandage between probe and skin did not significantly affect the differentiation power., Conclusion: The results of this work confirm the potential of millimeter-wave reflectometry for determination of the water content in skin tissue which may lead to interesting applications as early detection of skin cancer and through-bandage monitoring of wounds., (© 2012 John Wiley & Sons A/S.)
