Abstract

HP3 – the Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package – is an experiment package on-board the upcoming NASA Mars Mission InSight (Interior Exploration Using Seismic Investigation, Geodesy, and Heat Transport).The InSight Mission will investigate the interior structure of Mars using seismoligical and geodetical measurements and quantify the planetary heat budget by measuring the surface planetary heat flow. InSight is scheduled to be launched in May 2018 and to land on Mars at end of November 2018. The main payloads of the InSight lander are a seismometer (SEIS), the HP3 heat flow probe, as well as the Rotation and Interior Structure Experiment (RISE). An ancillary sensor package consisting of atmospheric pressure and temperature sensors (APSS) as well as a magnetometer complement the payload. After landing on Mars the seismometer and HP3 will be deployed onto the Martian surface by the robotic arm of the lander. HP3 is the contribution of DLR (Deutsches zentrum für Luft und Raumfahrt, Germany) to the InSight mission. It is designed to determine the geothermal heat flux by penetrating down into the Martian surface to at least 3m, with the goal of reaching 5m depth. HP3 measures the thermal conductivity as function of depth during the penetration phase, and the thermal profile of the subsurface will be monitored for a full Martian year after reaching the final depth. HP3 is composed of the following subsystems: • A set of thermal sensors to determine thermal conductivity and subsurface temperature (TEM) • A self-penetrating probe (termed the mole) to emplace sensors in the subsurface • Two measurements suites to determine the depth of the thermal sensors (TLM & STATIL) • A radiometer to determine the surface temperature forcing (RAD) • The instrument main (backend) electronics (BEE) The HP3 deployable elements are housed inside a support structure, and electrical connections to the lander and BEE are provided by the HP3 supply tethers. The support structure also guides the mole during its initial penetration into the surface.The mole is a mechanically actuated force hammering device for soil penetration. It pulls a tether with thermal sensors and supply lines behind. By penetrating into the Martian subsurface the thermal sensors (TEM) will be deployed. The mole is equipped in its back part with the subsystem STATIL (STATIC Tilt Measurement Suite) which determines the mole inclination during the penetration. The length of paid-out tether is measured by the TLM subsystem (Tether Length Monitor). The path of the mole and the depth of the thermal sensors will be deterimed from the TLM and STATIL data. Abstract

The InSight lander will deliver geophysical instruments to Mars in 2018, including seismometers installed directly on the surface (Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure, SEIS). Routine operations will be split into two services, the Mars Structure Service(MSS) and Marsquake Service (MQS), which will be responsible, respectively, for defining the structure models and seismicity catalogs from the mission. The MSS will deliver a series of products before the landing, during the operations, and finally to the Planetary Data System(PDS) archive. Prior to the mission, we assembled a suite of a priori models of Mars,based on estimates of bulk composition and thermal profiles. Initial models during the mission will rely on modeling surface waves and impact-generated body waves independent of prior knowledge of structure. Later modeling will include simultaneous inversion of seismic observations for source and structural parameters. We use Bayesian inversion techniques to obtain robust probability distribution functions of interior structure parameters. Shallow structure will be characterized using the hammering of the heatflow probe mole, as well as measurements of surface wave ellipticity. Crustal scale structure will be constrained by measurements of receiver function and broadband Rayleigh wave ellipticity measurements. Core interacting body wave phases should be observable above modeled martian noise levels, allowing us to constrain deep structure. Normal modes of Mars should also be observable and can be used to estimate the globally averaged 1D structure, while combination with results from the InSight radio science mission and orbital observations will allow for constraint of deeper structure.

Abstract

After a flawless launch and a quiet half-year cruise to Mars, the InSight spacecraft landedsafely in Elysium Planitia on 26 November 2018 carrying a scientific payload focused on theexploration of the deep interior of the planet. The three core experiments are SEIS (SeismicExperiment for Interior Structure), a six-sensor, broad-band seismic instrument to detectglobal seismic/impact activity and use it to probe planetary structure; HP3 (Heat flow andPhysical Properties Package) for measuring the ground temperature/gradient, thermalconductivity and mechanical penetrability from the surface to 5 m depth; and RISE (Rotationand Interior Structure Experiment), a geodetic planetary rotation investigation usingsub-decimeter-scale precision tracking. These are augmented by APSS (Auxiliary PayloadSensor Suite), an environmental sensor suite comprising a pair of wind and air temperaturesensors (TWINS, Temperature and Winds for INSight), a pressure sensor (PS) and amagnetometer (IFG, InSight FluxGate); and an Instrument Deployment System(IDS), including a robotic arm, a mid-resolution color camera (IDC, InstrumentDeployment Camera) and a wide-angle color camera (ICC, Instrument ContextCamera), all of which additionally support geological investigations of the lander’ssurroundings. The landing site turns out to be remarkably well-suited for the deployment ofSEIS and HP3, and at the time of this writing (January 2019) SEIS is on the groundwith all sensors operating as designed and HP3 deployment is expected withinweeks. All of the other instruments have been successfully commissioned and arereturning science data.
