This study aims to clarify the current concept of performing rhinoplasty in patients with possible body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). The primary objective was to investigate the validity and evolution over time of the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Questionnaire-Aesthetic Surgery (BDDQ-AS) before and after surgery. Together with the BDDQ-AS, also the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation scale, FACE-Q nose and nostrils, and Utrecht questionnaire (UQ) were used for convergent validation. In this prospective study, 187 patients completed these patient-reported outcome measures at four time points: at the preoperative consultation and postoperatively at 3, 6 and 12 months. The preoperative BDDQ-AS positivity rate was as high as 55.1%. Postoperatively, there was a highly significant decrease in the odds of scoring positive on the BDDQ-AS. At the preoperative consultation, positively screened patients were less satisfied with the esthetics of their noses with worse scores on UQ, FACE-Q nose, and visual analog scale. The preoperative differences in outcome measure ratings disappeared postoperatively, except for the FACE-Q nostrils, which surprisingly showed better values in BDDQ-AS positive patients. Younger age and absence of nasal trauma were statistically significant covariates associated with positive BDDQ-AS screening. Due to the overwhelming decrease in positive BDDQ-AS outcomes after surgery, a positive screening result on the BDDQ-AS should not be interpreted as a formal contraindication for surgery. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder characterized by repetitive episodes of partial or complete obstruction of the upper airway during sleep. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a method used as a first-line treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, intolerance and resistance to CPAP can limit its long-term effectiveness. Alternative treatments are available, such as Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs), positional therapy, upper airway surgery, and maxillomandibular osteotomy. However, often less efficient in reducing the apnea-hypopnea index, the higher tolerance of and compliance to alternative treatment has resulted in the adequate treatment of OSA in CPAP-intolerant patients. This paper describes the protocol of a prospective single-center cohort study including adult patients with moderate to severe OSA (15 events/h ≤ apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) < 65 events/h) that failed to comply with CPAP therapy. Selected patients will be invited to the clinic to explore alternative treatment options where DISE will be a first step in further identifying upper airway collapse during sleep. By exploring alternative treatment options in CPAP-intolerant patients and systematically documenting their treatment paths, an algorithm can be defined to better guide patients towards personalized treatment for OSA. The follow-up is aimed at 5 years with an inclusion of 170 patients per year, including a drop-out rate of 15%. Purpose: Clinical experience shows complaints similar to LARS not only after rectal surgery, but even after other types of colorectal surgery. Our aim was to investigate the occurrence of LARS after several types of colorectal surgery and its impact on quality of life., Methods: We included adult patients who underwent colorectal surgery at our centre from January 2016 until March 2019, regardless of indication. A questionnaire was sent evaluating LARS and quality of life., Results: The questionnaire was answered by 119 patients. We noticed highest LARS-score after rectum surgery (26.1), but also surprisingly higher LARS-score after right-sided colectomy (21.0) compared to left-sided colectomy (16.4). We report lowest quality of life after rectal surgery, but higher quality of life in left colectomy compared to right colectomy., Conclusion: LARS-score did not significantly correlate with type of procedure; however, higher LARS-scores were noted after right-sided colectomy compared to left-sided colectomy with similar impact on quality of life. We suggest CORS (colorectal resection syndrome) as a more suiting conceptual name instead of LARS to describe functional bowel complaints after colorectal surgery., (© 2023.
