Abstract Purpose This study estimated the prevalence of and factors associated with secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, and assessed attitudes and knowledge about SHS among pregnant women in Cairo, Egypt. Methods Pregnant women in the third trimester were recruited to participate in a survey assessing tobacco smoking and SHS exposure during their current pregnancy. Participants were recruited from three antenatal clinics in Cairo, Egypt, from June 2015 to May 2016. We examined differences in sociodemographic characteristics and SHS exposure, attitudes, and knowledge by smoking/SHS status. We used multivariable ordinary least squares regression to examine the association between husbands’ smoking and pregnant women’s mean daily hours of SHS exposure, adjusting for women’s smoking status, age group, education, and urban (vs. suburban/rural) residence. Results Of two hundred pregnant women aged 16–37 years, about two-thirds (69%) had a husband who smoked tobacco. During their current pregnancy, most women reported being non-smokers (71%), and 38% of non-smokers reported being SHS-exposed. Non-smokers exposed to SHS tended to live in more rural areas and have husbands who smoked in the home. INTRODUCTION: A major site of secondhand smoke exposure for children and adults is the home. Few studies have evaluated the impact of e-cigarette or hookah use on home air quality, despite evidence finding toxic chemicals in secondhand e-cigarette aerosols and hookah smoke. We assessed the effect of e-cigarette and hookah use on home air quality and compared it with air quality in homes where cigarettes were smoked and where no smoking or e-cigarette use occurred. METHODS: Non-smoking homes and homes where e-cigarettes, hookah or cigarettes were used were recruited in the New York City area (n=57) from 2015 to 2019. Particulate matter with diameter less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5), black carbon and carbon monoxide (CO) were measured during a smoking or vaping session, both in a primary smoking room and in an adjacent secondary room where no smoking or vaping occurred. Log transformed data were compared with postanalysis of variance Tukey simultaneous tests. RESULTS: Use of hookah significantly increased PM2.5 levels compared with non-smoking homes, in both the primary and secondary rooms, while use of e-cigarettes increased PM2.5 levels only in primary rooms. Additionally, in-home use of hookah resulted in greater CO concentrations than the use of cigarettes in primary rooms. CONCLUSIONS: Use of e-cigarettes or hookah increases air pollution in homes. For hookah, increases in PM2.5 penetrated even into rooms adjacent to where smoking occurs. Extending smoke-free rules inside homes to include e-cigarette and hookah products is needed to protect household members and visitors from passive exposure to harmful aerosols and gases.

BackgroundTobacco smoking using a hookah (i.e., waterpipe) is a global epidemic. While evidence suggests that sexual minorities (SM) have higher odds of hookah use compared to heterosexuals, little is known about their hookah use patterns and transitions. We sought to examine transitions between hookah smoking and use of other tobacco and electronic (e-) products among SM adults aged 18 years of age and older versus their heterosexual counterparts.MethodsWe analyzed nationally representative data of ever and current hookah smokers from Wave 1 (2013-2014; ever use n = 1014 SM and n = 9462 heterosexuals; current use n = 144 SM and n = 910 heterosexuals) and Wave 2 (2014-2015; ever use n = 901 SM and n = 8049 heterosexuals; current use n = 117 SM and n = 602 heterosexuals) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study. Rationale: The Southeast Asian tuberculosis burden is high, and it remains unclear if urban indoor air pollution in this setting is exacerbating the epidemic. Objectives: To determine the associations of latent tuberculosis with common urban indoor air pollution sources (secondhand smoke, indoor motorcycle emissions, and cooking) in Southeast Asia. Methods: We enrolled child household contacts of patients with microbiologically confirmed active tuberculosis in Vietnam, from July 2017 to December 2019. We tested children for latent tuberculosis and evaluated air pollution exposures with questionnaires and personal aerosol sampling. We tested hypotheses using generalized estimating equations. Measurements and Main Results: We enrolled 72 patients with tuberculosis (27% with cavitary disease) and 109 of their child household contacts. Latent tuberculosis was diagnosed in 58 (53%) household contacts at baseline visit. Background and aims: Usually non-daily smokers do not consider themselves smokers, and they are at a higher level of health risks due to smoking compared to non-smokers. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of non-daily smoking (NDS) and its associated factors among university students. Methods: This cross-sectional web-based study was performed in Tabriz, Iran. A proportional random sample of 3666 students from all universities of Tabriz were recruited from July to August, 2019, and an online questionnaire was used to collect data. Predictors of NDS were investigated using a multiple logistic regression model. Results: A total of 15.7% and 7.8% of the students were daily and NDSs, respectively. Compared to the non-smokers, the NDSs were more likely to exhibit high-risk behaviors such as substance abuse (odd ratio [OR]=2.96; 95% CI: 2.12-4.13), alcohol drinking (OR=2.54; 95% CI: 1.78-3.62), hookah smoking experience (OR=9.30; 95% CI: 6.06-14.25), and regular hookah use (OR=24.22; 95% CI: 14.86-39.46). Compared to daily smokers, NDSs were more likely to be female gender (OR=0.16; 95% CI: 0.10-0.24), denial of being a smoker (OR=11.69; 95% CI: 6.86-19.91), not addicted to nicotine (OR=10.02; 95% CI: 4.21-23.85), and less likely to have an intention for quitting in recent months (OR=2.27; 95% CI: 1.28-4.04). Conclusion: Non-daily smokers do not consider themselves smokers and have no intention to quit smoking. They are more prone to present high-risk health behaviors. Health policymakers should pay more attention to NDSs while planning smoking cessation programs.

Background Electronic hookah (e-hookah) vaping has increased in popularity among youth, who endorse unsubstantiated claims that flavored aerosol is detoxified as it passes through water. However, e-hookahs deliver nicotine by creating an aerosol of fine and ultrafine particles and other oxidants that may reduce the bioavailability of nitric oxide and impair endothelial function secondary to formation of oxygen-derived free radicals. Methods and Results We examined the acute effects of e-hookah vaping on endothelial function, and the extent to which increased oxidative stress contributes to the vaping-induced vascular impairment. Twenty-six healthy young adult habitual hookah smokers were invited to vape a 30-minute e-hookah session to evaluate the impact on endothelial function measured by brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD). To test for oxidative stress mediation, plasma total antioxidant capacity levels were measured and the effect of e-hookah vaping on FMD was examined before and after intravenous infusion of the antioxidant ascorbic acid (n=11). Background and aimsBuilding on published work1 establishing concurrent validity of a self-report tobacco dependence (TD) index among users of different tobacco products in Wave 1 (W1) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study, the current study examines prospective relationships with tobacco use behaviors to establish predictive validity of the TD index. Hypotheses suggested high levels of W1 TD would be associated with persistent tobacco use at Wave 2 (W2).ParticipantsA U.S. nationally representative sample of 32,320 adult W1 and W2 interviews focused on 11,615 W1 adults who were current established tobacco users and completed the W2 interview.FindingsHigher TD scores and greater changes in TD scores were associated with greater quantity and frequency of tobacco use at the W2 interview for Cigarette Only (n = 7068), Smokeless (smokeless or snus pouches) Only (n = 772), Cigarette plus E-Cigarette (n = 592), and Multiple Products (n = 1866) users, although not significantly so for E-Cigarette Only (n = 367), Cigar Only (traditional, cigarillo, or filtered) (n = 584), or Hookah Only (n = 366) users. Higher TD was associated with decreased odds of successful quitting for Cigarette and Multiple Product users. Higher TD was associated with increased odds of a quit attempt for those in the Hookah and Multiple Products user groups and was not associated with quit attempts or deceased odds of quit success among exclusive E-Cigarette, Cigar, Smokeless and Cigarette plus E-Cigarette users.ConclusionSupport for the predictive validity of the PATH Study measures of adult TD will enable regulatory investigations of TD across several tobacco products.

Objectives. Survey items used in surveillance systems to assess the use of emerging products like hookah and electronic inhalant devices (EIDs) may not match definitions used by high-risk populations. This qualitative study explored how African American youth and young adults (YYAs) (1) use hookah and EIDs and (2) identify patterns in the ways they describe and organize these products. Design. Individual in-person interviews were conducted among a sample of continuation high school and vocational school students in southern California. Participation was limited to those who had ever tried at least one tobacco product, self-identified as African American, and were between the ages of 14 and 26 years (n = 28). We conducted a content analysis to identify patterns in perceptions and use of these products. Results. African American YYAs recognized and described traditional hookah based on physical attributes, but for EIDs, including e-cigarettes, e-hookah, and vape pens, YYAs focused on reasons for using the product. Three primary categories emerged for reasons YYA used specific products: nicotine content and quitting, social facilitation, and use with marijuana. E-cigarettes were identified as quitting aids and as having nicotine but were not considered addictive. The term hookah recalled both the traditional and electronic pen-type products for YYAs. The terms vapes, hookah, wax pens, and others are used in the context of describing product use with marijuana. Conclusions. A better understanding of why African American YYAs use these products is needed to develop better measures for accurate rates of use, uncover differences in use between product types, and to develop effective prevention messaging.

BackgroundHookah smoking is marketed to youth as a harmless alternative to cigarettes. Although cigarette smoking acutely impairs endothelial function, the effect of smoking fruit-flavored hookah tobacco is unknown. Because charcoal traditionally is used to heat the hookah tobacco in the waterpipe, hookah smoke delivers tobacco toxicants and nicotine plus charcoal combustion products: not only carbon-rich nanoparticles, oxidants that may destroy nitric oxide and impair endothelial function, but also large amounts of carbon monoxide (CO), a putative vasodilator molecule.MethodsTo test the acute effect of hookah smoking on endothelial function, in young adult hookah smokers (n=30, age 26±1 years, mean±SE), we measured plasma nicotine, exhaled CO, and brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) before and after charcoal-heated hookah smoking. To remove the effect of charcoal combustion, the same measurements were performed when the same flavored hookah tobacco product was heated electrically (n=20). As a positive internal control, we studied age-matched cigarette smokers (n=15) who smoked 1 cigarette. To isolate the effect of the CO boost on FMD, hookah smokers (n=8) inhaled a 0.1% CO gas mixture to approximate their CO boost achieved with charcoal-heated hookah smoking.ResultsNicotine levels increased similarly with all types of smoking, whereas exhaled CO increased 9- to 10-fold more after charcoal-heated hookah than after either electrically heated hookah or cigarette smoking. ABSTRACT Objective: To estimate the prevalence of current commercial cigarette smoking, as well as those of e-cigarette and hookah experimentation and current use among adults (≥ 18 years of age) in Brazil. Methods: This study was based on a countrywide cross-sectional telephone-based survey conducted in 2022. The sample was designed to be representative of the five macroregions in Brazil and included 1,800 individuals from each of the regions. Telephone numbers, using a random digit dialing procedure, were proportionally selected for each direct distance dialing code in each region and then electronically validated (i.e., 900 cell and 900 landline phone numbers per region). Information on current commercial cigarette smoking (regardless of frequency/amount), as well as lifetime history of or current e-cigarette and hookah use (regardless of amount), were collected. Results: The prevalence of lifetime history of e-cigarette and hookah use was identical (7.3%; 95% CI: 6.0-8.9), whereas the prevalence of current commercial cigarette smoking was 12.2% (95% CI: 10.4-14.1). Young adults (18-24 years) had the highest prevalence of e-cigarette experimentation (19.7%; 95% CI: 15.1-17.0) and hookah experimentation (17%; 95% CI: 12.2-23.2). E-cigarette and hookah use was more common in the Central-West region and among those with a high level of education, whereas current commercial cigarette smoking was more common among those with a lower level of education. Individuals who used the three forms of nicotine delivery corresponded to 1.5% of the sample (nearly 2 million individuals based on the estimated size of the Brazilian adult population). Conclusions: Surveillance is essential for the monitoring and prevention of these new forms of nicotine consumption.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the level of knowledge of Physical Therapy academics about the effects of hookah, to relate the level of knowledge with the sociodemographic profile and with the period of study. METHODS: Crosssectional and analytical study, conducted with 153 students from a private university in Goiás. The instruments used were a form with sociodemographic data and a questionnaire with 20 objective questions, 18 about the effects of hookah on health, and 2 about the role of health professionals in tobacco control. RESULTS: Knowledge was higher on issues related to health problems caused by hookah smoking, lung diseases caused by toxic agents and infectious diseases transmitted through the mouthpiece. Regarding tar and nicotine levels, and the influence of continuous use of hookah on the development of Diabetes Mellitus and infertility, knowledge was lower. Most recognize the importance of the role of health professionals in tobacco control. The mean of correct answers of academics with partners and those with a monthly family income of up to 4 minimum wages was significantly higher (p = 0.01), while the period of study did not affect the results. CONCLUSION: Students have low knowledge about the effects of hookah in relation to relevant issues, which raises the need to review the syllabus and pedagogical objectives of related disciplines, with a view to better prepare the student to effectively play their role in tobacco control. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of and factors associated with experimentation with and current use of water pipes and e-cigarettes among medical students. Methods: This was a cross-sectional multicentric study involving a convenience sample of students from medical schools in most Brazilian geographic regions. Information about experimentation with and current use of conventional cigarettes, water pipes, and e-cigarettes; beliefs and attitudes toward tobacco products; religiosity; and demographics were collected by means of an online structured questionnaire. We used descriptive statistics and logistic regression to analyze the association of those factors. Results: Our sample comprised 700 individuals from four Brazilian regions. Prevalence of experimentation with and current use of cigarettes, water pipes, and e-cigarettes were, respectively, 39.1% and 7.9%; 42.6% and 11.4%; and 13.1% and 2.3%. Water pipe experimentation was higher among those who had a sibling (adjusted OR = 2.64; 95% CI, 1.24-5.61) or friends (adjusted OR = 2.33; 95% CI, 1.63-3.31) who smoke. The same occurred regarding e-cigarette experimentation: siblings (adjusted OR = 2.76; 95% CI, 1.17-6.50) and friends (adjusted OR = 2.47; 95% CI, 1:45-4.22). Curiosity and scent/taste were the major reasons for water pipe use and e-cigarette experimentation. Although 93% of the responders learned about health damages of smoking during medical school classes, 51.4% reported having experimented with at least one of these tobacco products. Most responders who reported feeling the presence of God/the Holy Spirit in their lives were never experimenters of water pipes (59.2%) or e-cigarettes (55.3%). Conclusions: There is a high prevalence of experimentation with tobacco products among medical students whose siblings or friends smoke, despite their knowledge about smoking harms. Tobacco smoking and exposure to tobacco secondhand smoke (SHS) can cause lung cancer. We determined uptake of NNK (4-(Methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone), a tobacco specific potent pulmonary carcinogen, in hookah smokers and non-smokers exposed to hookah tobacco SHS. We analyzed data from a community-based convenience sample of 201 of adult (aged ≥18 years) exclusive hookah smokers (n = 99) and non-smokers (n = 102) residing in San Diego County, California. Participants spent an average of three consecutive hours indoors, in hookah lounges or private homes, where hookah tobacco was smoked exclusively. IntroductionLesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals smoke at rates 1.5-2 times higher than the general population, but less is known about LGB consumption of other tobacco products (OTPs) and gender differences. OTP use among young adult LGB bar patrons and the relationship among past quit attempts, intention to quit, and binge drinking with OTP use was examined.MethodsA cross-sectional survey of young adults (aged 18-26) in bars/nightclubs in seven U.S. cities between 2012 and 2014 (N=8,010; 1,101 LGB participants) was analyzed in 2016. Logistic regressions examined current use of five OTPs (cigarillos, electronic cigarettes, hookah, chewing tobacco, and snus) and sexual minority status, adjusting for demographics and comparing LB women and GB men with their heterosexual counterparts.ResultsLGB bar/nightclub patrons used all OTPs more than their heterosexual counterparts. LB women were more likely than heterosexual women to use cigarillos, electronic cigarettes, hookah, chew, and snus. GB men were more likely than heterosexual men to smoke cigarillos, electronic cigarettes, hookah, and use chew and snus. Past-year quit attempt was associated with increased odds of electronic cigarette use in men and women, and increased odds of dual use (cigarettes and OTPs) among men. Intention to quit was negatively associated with dual use among women. Binge drinking was associated with increased use of all OTPs across genders.ConclusionsLGB bar-going young adults are at higher risk for OTP use than their heterosexual counterparts. Objective: Although several biologic, psychosocial, and behavioral factors have been linked to postpartum depressive symptoms, studies examining the association between non-cigarette tobacco products and symptoms of postpartum depression are currently lacking. This study examined the association between hookah use and postpartum depressive symptoms., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System 2016-2020. Self-reported data on hookah use in the last 2 years and maternal mental health were captured using a structured questionnaire. Approximately 8.2% of the participants reported postpartum depressive symptoms and 4.1% reported hookah use in the past 2 years. Compared with those without postpartum depressive symptoms, participants with postpartum depressive symptoms were more likely to be hookah users (5.5% vs 4.0%, P < 0.001). After adjustment for confounders, the odds of having postpartum depressive symptoms were significantly higher among participants who used a hookah in the past 2 years compared with non-users; adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) 1.20 (1.03-1.40); P = 0.022., Conclusion: In a large, population-based sample of US women, hookah use in the past 2 years significantly increased the odds of having postpartum depressive symptoms, independent of potential confounders. Background: There is an increasing popularity of waterpipe tobacco smoking (WTS) in youth and even inathletes worldwide. Despite the existence of evidence of the harmful effects of hookah smoke on varioussystems of the body, especially the cardiovascular system, its simultaneous effect with exercise training hasnot been well studied. We assessed the effects of WTS exposure with/without swimming exercise on bloodpressure (BP), and heart histology and mechanical performance in male Wistar rats.Methods: The animals were divided into 4 groups of sedentary control (CTL), waterpipe tobacco smoking (S),mild endurance swimming exercise training (Ex), and waterpipe smoking plus exercise (S + Ex). Theduration of WTS and exercise was 8 weeks.Findings: BP and heart rate (HR) did not show a significant difference among the groups. WTS increased theTNF-α level of the heart (P < 0.05 vs. CTL) and cardiac tissue lesions (P < 0.05 vs. CTL), and reduced +dP/dtmax, -dp/dt max, and heart contractility indices (P < 0.01, P < 0.01, and P < 0.05, respectively, vs. CTL andEx groups). It also increased the Tau index (P < 0.05 vs. CTL; P < 0.01 vs. Ex groups) of the left ventricle.However, the combination of exercise and WTS reduced the TNF-α level, improved the heart activity ofsuperoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase enzymes, and prevented the negative effects of smoking on heartfunction and morphology.Conclusion: Mild exercise prevents WTS-induced left ventricular systolic and diastolic dysfunction partly viaimprovement of antioxidants and attenuation of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Vaping has risen substantially in recent years, particularly among young adults. Electronic (e-) hookahs are a newer category of vaping devices touted as safer tobacco alternatives. Although e-hookah vaping acutely reduces endothelial function, the role of nicotine and the mechanisms by which it may impair endothelial function remain understudied. In a randomized crossover study, we investigated the acute effects of vaping e-hookah, with and without nicotine, as compared with sham on endothelial function assessed by brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD), among 18 overtly healthy young adults. To determine the role of changes in circulating factors in plasma on endothelial cell function, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were cultured with participants' plasma, and acetylcholine-stimulated nitric oxide (NO) production and basal reactive oxygen species (ROS) bioactivity were assessed. Plasma nicotine was measured before and after the sessions. E-hookah vaping with nicotine, which acutely increased heart rate (HR) by 8 ± 3 beats/min and mean arterial pressure (MAP) by 7 ± 2 mmHg (means ± SE; P < 0.05), decreased endothelial-dependent FMD by 1.57 ± 0.19%Δ ( P = 0.001), indicating impairment in endothelial function. Vaping e-hookah without nicotine, which mildly increased hemodynamics (HR, 2 ± 2 beats/min and MAP 1 ± 1 mmHg; P = ns), did not significantly impair endothelial function. No changes were observed after sham vaping. HUVECs cultured with participants' plasma after versus before e-hookah vaping with nicotine, but not without nicotine or sham vaping, exhibited reductions in endothelial cell NO bioavailability and increases in ROS bioactivity ( P < 0.05). Plasma nicotine concentrations increased after vaping e-hookah with nicotine (6.7 ± 1.8 ng/mL; P = 0.002), whereas no changes were observed after vaping e-hookah without nicotine or sham ( P = ns). Acute e-hookah vaping induces endothelial dysfunction by impairing NO bioavailability associated with increased ROS production, and these effects are attributable to nicotine, not to nonnicotine constituents, present in the flavored e-liquid. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Despite safety claims heavily advertised by the hookah tobacco industry, acute e-hookah vaping induces in vivo endothelial dysfunction by impairing ex vivo NO bioavailability associated with increased ROS production. These effects are attributable to nicotine, not to nonnicotine constituents, present in the flavored e-liquid.

Background: The rising prevalence of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) and hookah use among youth raises questions about medical trainees' views of these products. We aimed to investigate medical trainees' knowledge and attitudes toward e-cigarette and hookah use., Methods: We used data from a large cross-sectional survey of medical trainees in Brazil, the United States, and India. We investigated demographic and mental health aspects, history of e-cigarettes and tobacco use, knowledge and attitudes toward e-cigarettes and hookah, and sources of information on e-cigarettes and hookah. Although all medical trainees were eligible for the original study, only senior students and physicians-in-training were included in the present analysis., Results: Of 2,036 senior students and physicians-in-training, 27.4% believed e-cigarette use to be less harmful than tobacco smoking. As for hookah use, 14.9% believed it posed a lower risk than cigarettes. More than a third of trainees did not acknowledge the risks of passive e-cigarette use (42.9%) or hookah smoking (35.1%). Also, 32.4% endorsed e-cigarettes to quit smoking, whereas 22.5% felt ill equipped to discuss these tobacco products with patients. Fewer than half recalled attending lectures on these topics, and their most common sources of information were social media (54.5%), Google (40.8%), and friends and relatives (40.3%)., Conclusions: Medical trainees often reported incorrect or biased perceptions of e-cigarettes and hookah, resorted to unreliable sources of information, and lacked the confidence to discuss the topic with patients. Aims: The global prevalence of waterpipe tobacco smoking is increasing. Although the cardiorespiratory, renal, and reproductive effects of waterpipe smoking (WPS) are well-documented, there is limited knowledge regarding its adverse impact on the liver. Therefore, our study aimed to assess the effects and potential mechanisms of WPS inhalation for one or four weeks on the liver., Main Methods: Mice were exposed to WPS for 30 min per day, five days per week, while control mice were exposed to clean air., Key Findings: Analysis using light microscopy revealed the infiltration of immune cells (neutrophils and lymphocytes) accompanied by vacuolar hepatic degeneration upon WPS inhalation. At the four-week timepoint, electron microscopy analysis demonstrated an increased number of mitochondria with a concomitant pinching-off of hepatocyte plasma membranes. WPS exposure led to a significant rise in the activities of liver enzymes alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase in the bloodstream. Additionally, WPS inhalation elevated lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species levels and disrupted the levels of the antioxidant glutathione in liver tissue homogenates. The concentration of proinflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1β, was significantly increased in the WPS-exposed group. Background: This systematic review evaluated the available medical literature on the prevalence and trends of waterpipe tobacco smoking among adolescents and youth in jurisdictionally representative populations., Methods: PubMed, Embase, and Scopus were searched for relevant studies from inception until 31 December 2022 that reported the burden of waterpipe smoking among adolescents and youth (10-24 years of age). We extracted qualitative data on the demographic characteristics, burden, and correlates of waterpipe smoking (PROSPERO ID: CRD42022310982)., Results: A total of 2,197 articles were screened and 62 were included in the analysis. The majority (29) of the studies was from the United States of America and there were no studies from the south-east Asian region. The prevalence of ever waterpipe smoking among the 10-24 years age group was noted to be 18.16% (95% CI, 18.03-18.29). The prevalence of current (30-day) waterpipe smoking was 6.43% (95% CI, 6.34-6.50). The age of initiation of waterpipe smoking was variable. The prevalence of waterpipe smoking was higher among males, among those who belong to the high- and middle-income groups, and among university students. The common risk factors of waterpipe smoking included cigarette smoking, alcohol, and substance use. Waterpipe smoking resulted in increased susceptibility to the use of conventional forms of tobacco (e.g. smoking) among those who were never smokers., Conclusion: Waterpipe smoking usage was significantly high among adolescents and young adults. Developing regulatory guidelines for water-pipe smoking, surveillance of its use, intervention, and specific policy frameworks may be considered a public health priority.

Aim: To measure trends in the use of various smoking products among children and adolescents from 2016 to 2023., Method: The data is based on seven waves of the "Präventionsradar", a school-based epidemiological study in grades 5 to 10. The primary endpoints of the study were the lifetime and monthly prevalence of the use of tobacco cigarettes, e-cigarettes, shisha and the use of at least two of these smoking products (combined use). Prevalence estimates are based on logistic regression models., Results: The analysis was based on 94,127 questionnaires. The sex ratio was balanced (49% female), mean age was 13 years (SD=1.8). In 2022/2023, the lifetime prevalence of smoking tobacco cigarettes was 18.8% (95% CI 18.1-19.5), of e-cigarettes 23.5% (95% CI 22.8-24.3), of shisha 14.0% (95% CI 13.4-14.7) and combined use 19.0% (95% CI 18.3-19.7). The monthly prevalence of smoking tobacco cigarettes was 5.9% (95% CI 5.5-6.4), of e-cigarettes 7.0% (95% CI 6.5-7.4), of shisha 3.2% (95% CI 2.8-3.5) and combined use 4.8% (95% CI 4.4-5.2). The following trends in lifetime prevalence have emerged since 2016: tobacco cigarettes (-3.0 percentage points), e-cigarettes (+1.8 percentage points), shisha (-9.2 percentage points), combined use (-2.7 percentage points). In the years of the COVID-19 pandemic, youth smoking decreased and rose again post-COVID with the exception of shisha., Discussion: The use of smoking products in adolescence occurs frequently. Over the observational period, a trend reversal towards e-cigarettes as the most popular product among children and young people is most likely. In addition, the combined use of several smoking products has become a common pattern of consumption. Introduction: The increasing prevalence of waterpipe tobacco smoking (WTS) and its detrimental effects on memory function have been reported. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of moderate-intensity endurance exercise on the detrimental effects of WTS on learning and spatial memory in rats., Aims and Methods: Animals were divided into the Control group (CTL), the exercise group (Ex) which trained for 8 weeks, the WTS group (Wp) exposed to smoke inhalation (30 minutes per day, 5 days each week, and for 8 weeks), and the group that did exercise training and received waterpipe smoke together (Ex + Wp). Thereafter, learning and spatial memory were assessed by the Morris water maze test and hippocampal molecular measurements were done., Results: Waterpipe smoke significantly impaired learning and spatial memory, decreased expression of neurotrophic factors IGF-1 and BDNF (p < .01 and p < .05 vs. CTL group, respectively), increased BAX to BCL-2 ratio (p < .001 vs. CTL group) in hippocampal tissue, and increased the percent of damaged neurons in the hippocampal CA1 area (p < .05 vs. CTL group). Combination of exercise training with WTS prevented learning and spatial memory disturbances and recovered expression of neurotrophic factors IGF-1 (p < .05 vs. Wp group), decreased BAX to BCL-2 ratio (p < .001 vs. Wp group), and reduced percentage of damaged neurons (p < .05 vs. Wp group)., Conclusions: Findings suggest that moderate-intensity endurance exercise training can ameliorate learning and memory impairment caused by waterpipe smoke in rats. This effect partly results from increasing the expression of neurotrophic factors BDNF and IGF-1 and correcting pro/anti-apoptotic proteins balance in the hippocampal tissue., Implications: The popularity of WTS especially among youth is increasing. We assessed the effect of hookah smoke with/without exercise on learning and memory. Hookah smoke leads to CA1-neural injury and impairs learning and memory in rats. A combination of exercise training with hookah smoke attenuates these complications. This positive effect of exercise is partially mediated by the balancing of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and also the BAX to BCL-2 ratio, a significant predictor of cell susceptibility to apoptosis. Tobacco smoking with a water pipe or hookah is increasing globally. There are millions of water pipe tobacco smokers worldwide, and in the United States, water pipe use is more common among youth and young adults than among adults. The spread of water pipe tobacco smoking has been abetted by the marketing of flavored tobacco, a social media environment that promotes water pipe smoking, and misperceptions about the addictive potential and potential adverse health effects of this form of tobacco use. There is growing evidence that water pipe tobacco smoking affects heart rate, blood pressure regulation, baroreflex sensitivity, tissue oxygenation, and vascular function over the short term. Long-term water pipe use is associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease. Several harmful or potentially harmful substances present in cigarette smoke are also present in water pipe smoke, often at levels exceeding those found in cigarette smoke. Water pipe tobacco smokers have a higher risk of initiation of cigarette smoking than never smokers. Future studies that focus on the long-term adverse health effects of intermittent water pipe tobacco use are critical to strengthen the evidence base and to inform the regulation of water pipe products and use. The objectives of this statement are to describe the design and operation of water pipes and their use patterns, to identify harmful and potentially harmful constituents in water pipe smoke, to document the cardiovascular risks of water pipe use, to review current approaches to water pipe smoking cessation, and to offer guidance to healthcare providers for the identification and treatment of individuals who smoke tobacco using water pipes. Background: The prevalence of waterpipe smoking among women in southern Iran is significantly higher than women in other regions of Iran. We aimed to explore the effect of several demographic factors, knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy and social norms on a successful cessation of waterpipe smoking in the marginalized women of Bandar Abbas city, in the south of Iran., Methods: This case-control study was conducted in 2022 among 731 women (246 subjects who successfully quit waterpipe smoking in the case group and 485 who smoked waterpipe in the control group). A cluster sampling method was used to collect the required data through face-to-face interviews and a researcher-made questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of demographic information, behavioral information about waterpipe smoking and knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy and social norms. The data were analyzed in STATA 14 using univariate and multivariate regression analyses., Results: The mean and standard deviation of age was 39.24 ± 11.93 and 37.18 ± 13.57 in the control and case groups, respectively. With an increase of one score in social norm (OR: 1.046), the odds of cessation were increased for 4%. With an increase of one score in self-efficacy (OR: 1.152), the odds of cessation were increased for 15%. With an increase of one score in knowledge (OR: 1.064), the odds of cessation were increased for 6%. With an increase of one score in attitude (OR: 1.215) the odds of cessation were increased for 21%., Conclusion: The present findings revealed personal and interpersonal influential factors in successful waterpipe cessation. Women's knowledge can be increased and their attitude can be changed. Background: Shisha smoking is a growing health concern in most countries and this habit of smoking tobacco is on the increase in Nigeria. It is on the rise among youths along with proliferation of clubs, bars and hotels all over the country. The increased use in Nigeria can be attributed to easy access to tobacco products., Objective: To determine the prevalence of Shisha smoking and evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practice of Shisha smoking among university undergraduates at a private university in Nigeria., Methods: In 2021, a cross-sectional online study was carried out among university students at Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, Nigeria, using a self-administered questionnaire., Results: Overall, a total of 446 students took part in the study (115 males, 321 females) with mean age of 19.7 ± 2.9. The prevalence of Shisha smoking amongst the study respondents was 4.6%. About 25.0% of those that smoked shisha stated that they have been trying to quit with none of them seeking professional help. The mean knowledge score was 6.1 ± 2.6. The knowledge of shisha was highest among females and year 6 students. A little over half of the study respondents did not know that Shisha smoking was associated with cancers (52.8%) or that Shisha contained tobacco (58.3%). On the average, the study participants had very good attitude towards Shisha smoking with an average attitude score of 3.4 ± 0.4. The best attitude score was seen in females and year 6 students. The difference was not statistically significant. (p>0.05)., Conclusion: The habit of shisha smoking occurs among youths who may be unaware of the tobacco content and increasing evidences of possible health risks. BACKGROUND: Young adults consider shisha (water-pipe) less harmful than other smoking methods, but it has been reported to expose its users to excess levels of tobacco. This study sought to determine the prevalence, knowledge and factors associated with shisha use among university students in Buea, Cameroon. METHODS: Consenting participants were included in a cross-sectional study. Knowledge was assessed using a knowledge summary score and logistic regression used to identify factors associated with shisha smoking. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: There were 1,008 student participants; 509 (50.9%) were female. The mean age was 22.9 ± 3.1 years. The prevalence of shisha smoking was 26% (95% CI 23.3-28.8). Most respondents had good knowledge about shisha (59.2%). Poor knowledge about shisha (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 2.37, 95% CI 1.57-3.59)], living in a hostel (aOR 2.00, 95% CI 1.29-3.11), friends' use of shisha (aOR 5.41, 95% CI 3.03-10.43) and alcohol consumption (aOR 1.91, 95% CI 1.24-2.94) were associated with shisha smoking. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of shisha smoking among university students in Buea is high; about one-quarter of the students have poor knowledge about its harmful health effects. There is an increasing need for sensitisation of these young adults to the harmful effects of tobacco smoking.

Bac kgro und: The present study assessed the immediate respiratory effects of water-pipe smoking (WPS) specifically focusing on tidal breathing examining Impulse Oscillometry (IOS), Control of Breathing (CoB) and exhaled CO (eCO) among young healthy adults. Metho ds: A cross-over study design with sample size of 50 young healthy smokers was used. All measurements were taken immediately pre and post a Control and Experimental session. Repeated analysis of variance (ANOVA) and log-transformations were used for comparisons between pre-post and sessions. Significance was set to p<0.05. Res ults : During the Experimental session, TI/TE, TI/Ttot (p<0.001), P0.1 (p=0.005) and P0.1/(VT/TI) (p=0.021) increased significantly while TE/Ttot decreased (p=0.003) post WPS. IOS parameters ?5, R5, R10, R20 and fdr all increased significantly immediately post WPS (p<0.001) as did eCO and COHb (p<0.001). Concl usion : A 30-minute session of WPS altered respiratory mechanics expressed by the increased large and peripheral airways resistance, control of breathing expressed by increased P0.1 and modified the tidal breathing pattern.
