Poor handwriting has been shown to be associated with developmental disorders such as Developmental Coordination Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, autism, and learning disorders. Handwriting difficulties could lead to academic underachievement and poor self-esteem. Therapeutic intervention has been shown to be effective in treating children with poor handwriting, making early identification critical. The SOS test (Systematic Screening for Handwriting Difficulties) has been developed for this purpose. A child copies a sample of writing within 5 min. Handwriting quality is evaluated using six criteria and writing speed is measured. The Dutch SOS test was administered to 860 Flemish children (7-12 years). Inter- and intrarater reliability was excellent. Test-retest reliability was moderate. A correlation coefficient of 0.70 between SOS and "Concise Assessment Methods of Children Handwriting" test (Dutch version) confirmed convergent validity. The SOS allowed discrimination between typically developing children and children in special education, males and females, and different age groups. (Contains 4 figures and 2 tables.)

Formal testing of 3 year old children is a new feature in the revised version of the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (Movement ABC-2). Our study evaluated the reliability and explored the clinical applicability of the Movement ABC-2 Test in this young age group. A total of 50 typically children were given two trials of the test within a one to two week interval by two physical therapists: same assessor (n = 28 children) and different assessors (n = 22 children). Psychometric properties were evaluated by calculating internal consistency (Cronbach [alpha]), intra-class correlation (ICC), the standard error of measurement (SEM), the smallest detectable difference (SDD) and Kappa values for classification agreement. The results are promising for future implementation of the Movement ABC-2 in clinical practice. The children's performance was highly reproducible when tested by the same assessor (ICC 0.94). The SEM was 1.7 or 2.1 standard scores for 90% or 95% confidence intervals respectively, making the test sensitive enough to detect individual changes. If two different assessors tested the children the ICC was 0.76. In conclusion, the revised test can be applied to assess motor performance in typically developing 3-year old children. Future studies are needed to confirm if the same can be said for children with motor delays. (Contains 6 tables.)

The aim of this study was to investigate the convergent validity of the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (M-ABC) and the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2 (PDMS-2). Thirty-one 4- and 5-year-old children (mean age 4 years 11 months, SD 6 months), all recruited from a clinical setting, took part in the study. Children were tested on the M-ABC and the PDMS-2 in a counterbalanced order on the same occasion. The results showed that the total scores on the two tests correlated well (r[subscript s] = 0.76). However, when the ability of the two tests to identify children with difficulties was examined, agreement between them was low (K = 0.29), with the PDMS-2 being less sensitive to mild motor impairment in this population. Taken together, these findings suggest that clinicians need to be aware that, although measuring a similar construct, these tests are not interchangeable. (Contains 1 figure and 2 tables.)

This study examined consequences of the comorbidity of developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and learning disability (LD) for the severity and pattern of perceptual-motor dysfunction. Compared to children with only DCD, those with DCD and LD had poorer perceptual-motor ability, with particular difficulty performing manual dexterity and balance tasks. Results suggest these children show a distinctive pattern of perceptual-motor dysfunction. (Contains references.) (Author/DB)

This article describes development of the Test for Manual Dexterity in Visually Impaired Children. The test was used to chart manual skills of 66 Norwegian children with visual impairments and 67 controls, and found significant differences among sighted children, children with low vision, and children who were blind. Used writing tasks recorded on a computer-monitored XY tablet to differentiate between normal variations in psychomotor development and dysgraphia in 16 young children. Found that control of spatial accuracy, not allograph retrieval or size control, discriminated dysgraphic children from others. Poor writers were less accurate than proficient writers and did not catch up with peers within one year. (Author)

Walking adaptability is essential for children to participate in daily life, but no objective measurement tools exist. We determined psychometric properties of the Walking Adaptability Ladder test for Kids (WAL-K) in 6-12 year old children. In total, 122 typically developing (TD) children and 26 children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) completed the single and double run conditions of the WAL-K. Intra-rater, inter-rater and test-retest reliability were determined by ICCs and Smallest Detectable Change (SDC) in 53 TD children. Construct validity was determined by comparing WAL-K scores between 69 TD and all DCD children and correlating these scores with age and MABC-2 scores. ICCs for reliability varied between 0.76 and 0.99. Compared to the first test performance, WAL-K scores were lower (i.e., better) at retest. SDCs for test-retest reliability varied between 20.8 and 26.1% of the mean scores. WAL-K scores were significantly higher (i.e., worse) in DCD children compared to TD children (p < 0.001). Significant negative correlations were found with MABC-2 (-0.52 and −0.60) and age (-0.61 and −0.68). The WAL-K shows to be a valid, reliable and easy-to-use tool for measuring walking adaptability in children. Adding an extra practice trial may reduce the observed learning effect.
