This study examined a state-wide, policy-directed teacher evaluation model implemented across public schools and educator preparation programs. Such models are grounded in a theory of action that situates teacher learning within social relationships, yet does not account for the complexity of systems. Results challenge policy's implicit theory that an evaluation model can function as a boundary object to create a common understanding of good teaching and positively impact teacher professional practice. We found contradictory evidence that the model served as a boundary object that facilitated shared sensemaking as mediated understandings of good teaching collided with expectations in classroom contexts.

Teacher educators often encourage technology integration as a means to improve education. However, the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the acceleration of more invasive technologies offering quick "fixes" in schools and society. Building on the assumption that technologies are not neutral and neither are the societies into which they are introduced, we offer an ecological and critical vision whereby teacher educators might critically inquire with their students into downsides and harms of technologies as they work toward more educational and just futures. Teacher educators can encourage future and in-service teachers can enact a civics of technology by rejecting their role as passive users of technologies and acting as citizens who make informed decisions for more humane and just classrooms and communities. The authors share their efforts through the recently launched Civics of Technology project to create critical community and offer edtech audits as an illustrative example of practice.

Google is a multinational technology company whose massive advertising profits have allowed them to expand into many areas, including education. While the company has increasingly faced public scrutiny, the use of Google software and hardware in schools has often resulted in little debate. In this paper, we conduct a technoethical audit of Google to address ethical, legal, democratic, economic, technological, and pedagogical concerns educators, students, and community members might consider. We describe how Google extracts personal data from students, skirts laws intended to protect them, targets them for profits, obfuscates the company's intent in their Terms of Service, recommends harmful information, and distorts students' knowledge. We propose that educators and scholars more closely interrogate the tools of Google and other technology companies to move toward more democratic and just uses of technology in schools.
