Abstract

Several authors have suggested the existence of a relationship between breast cancer and meningioma occurring in the same patient. I describe four patients who had both of these neoplasms and present findings that dispute the implied relationship between the two.

Abstract

We have reported a case of primary thrombosis of the axillary/subclavian vein, also known as the Paget-Schroetter syndrome, complicated by pulmonary embolus. It was successfully treated, along with the pulmonary embolus, with streptokinase infusion.

Abstract

We have reported two cases of adenocarcinoma in a horseshoe kidney and their successful surgical treatment. Review of the literature suggests that transitional cell carcinoma and Wilms' tumor are seen more often than adenocarcinoma in horseshoe kidneys.

11. Use of a totally implantable drug delivery system in a university-affiliated community hospital.

Abstract

We reviewed our experience at the Western Reserve Care System with totally implantable drug delivery systems (IDDS) in cancer patients with vascular access problems. Fifty-one ports were placed in 50 patients. Forty-nine of the IDDS were placed under local anesthesia. One patient developed a hemothorax during placement. Two catheters were removed because of infection. Two catheters found to be occluded responded to flushing with streptokinase. All catheters remained functional up to the time of treatment completion or of the patient's death. The low morbidity and high success rates of IDDS should encourage placement early in the course of chemotherapy.
