Search

Binary supermassive black holes (BSBHs) are expected to be a generic byproduct from hierarchical galaxy formation. The final coalescence of BSBHs is thought to be the loudest gravitational wave (GW) siren, yet no confirmed BSBH is known in the GW-dominated regime. While periodic quasars have been proposed as BSBH candidates, the physical origin of the periodicity has been largely uncertain. Here we report discovery of a periodicity (P=1607$\pm$7 days) at 99.95% significance (with a global p-value of ~$10^{-3}$ accounting for the look elsewhere effect) in the optical light curves of a redshift 1.53 quasar, SDSS J025214.67-002813.7. Combining archival Sloan Digital Sky Survey data with new, sensitive imaging from the Dark Energy Survey, the total ~20-yr time baseline spans ~4.6 cycles of the observed 4.4-yr (restframe 1.7-yr) periodicity. The light curves are best fit by a bursty model predicted by hydrodynamic simulations of circumbinary accretion disks. The periodicity is likely caused by accretion rate modulation by a milli-parsec BSBH emitting GWs, dynamically coupled to the circumbinary accretion disk. A bursty hydrodynamic variability model is statistically preferred over a smooth, sinusoidal model expected from relativistic Doppler boost, a kinematic effect proposed for PG1302-102. Furthermore, the frequency dependence of the variability amplitudes disfavors Doppler boost, lending independent support to the circumbinary accretion variability hypothesis. Given our detection rate of one BSBH candidate from circumbinary accretion variability out of 625 quasars, it suggests that future large, sensitive synoptic surveys such as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time may be able to detect hundreds to thousands of candidate BSBHs from circumbinary accretion with direct implications for Laser Interferometer Space Antenna., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS, 17 pages, 9 figures

In our ongoing study of eta Carinae's light echoes, there is a relatively bright echo that has been fading slowly, reflecting the 1845-1858 plateau of the eruption. A separate paper discusses its detailed evolution, but here we highlight one important result: the H-alpha line shows extremely broad emission wings that reach -10,000km/s to the blue and +20,000km/s to the red. The line profile shape is inconsistent with electron scattering wings, indicating high-velocity outflowing material. These are the fastest outflow speeds ever seen in a non-terminal massive star eruption. The broad wings are absent in early phases of the eruption, but strengthen in the 1850s. These speeds are two orders of magnitude faster than the escape speed from a warm supergiant, and 5-10 times faster than winds from O-type or Wolf-Rayet stars. Instead, they are reminiscent of fast supernova ejecta or outflows from accreting compact objects, profoundly impacting our understanding of eta Car and related transients. This echo views eta Car from latitudes near the equator, so the high speed does not trace a collimated polar jet aligned with the Homunculus. Combined with fast material in the Outer Ejecta, it indicates a wide-angle explosive outflow. The fast material may constitute a small fraction of the total outflowing mass, most of which expands at 600 km/s. We present multi-epoch photometry and spectroscopy of a light echo from eta Carinae's 19th century Great Eruption. This echo shows a steady decline over a decade, sampling the 1850s plateau of the eruption. Spectra show the bulk outflow speed increasing from 150 km/s at early times, up to 600 km/s in the plateau. Later phases also develop remarkably broad emission wings indicating mass accelerated to more than 10,000 km/s. Together with other clues, this provides direct evidence for an explosive ejection. This is accompanied by a transition from narrow absorption lines to emission lines, often with broad P Cygni profiles. These changes imply that the pre-1845 luminosity spikes are distinct from the 1850s plateau. The key reason for this change may be that shock interaction dominates the plateau. The spectral evolution of eta Car closely resembles that of UGC2773-OT, which had clear signatures of shock interaction. We propose a 2-stage scenario for eta Car's eruption: (1) a slow outflow in the decades before the eruption, driven by binary interaction that produced a dense equatorial outflow, followed by (2) explosive energy injection that drove CSM interaction, powering the plateau and sweeping slower CSM into a fast shell that became the Homunculus. We discuss how this sequence could arise from a stellar merger in a triple system, leaving the eccentric binary seen today. We present 888 visual-wavelength spectra of 122 nearby type II supernovae (SNe II) obtained between 1986 and 2009, and ranging between 3 and 363 days post explosion. In this first paper, we outline our observations and data reduction techniques, together with a characterization based on the spectral diversity of SNe~II. A statistical analysis of the spectral matching technique is discussed as an alternative to non-detection constraints for estimating SN explosion epochs. The time evolution of spectral lines is presented and analysed in terms of how this differs for SNe of different photometric, spectral, and environmental properties: velocities, pseudo-equivalent widths, decline rates, magnitudes, time durations, and environment metallicity. Our sample displays a large range in ejecta expansion velocities, from $\sim9600$ to $\sim1500$ km s$^{-1}$ at 50 days post explosion with a median H$_{\alpha}$ value of 7300 km s$^{-1}$. This is most likely explained through differing explosion energies. Significant diversity is also observed in the absolute strength of spectral lines, characterised through their pseudo-equivalent widths. This implies significant diversity in both temperature evolution (linked to progenitor radius) and progenitor metallicity between different SNe~II. Around 60\% of our sample show an extra absorption component on the blue side of the H$_{\alpha}$ P-Cygni profile ("Cachito" feature) between 7 and 120 days since explosion. Studying the nature of Cachito, we conclude that these features at early times (before $\sim35$ days) are associated with \ion{Si}{2} $\lambda6355$, while past the middle of the plateau phase they are related to high velocity (HV) features of hydrogen lines., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 112 pages, 153 figures, 9 tables

We present a novel approach for creating science-ready catalogs through a software infrastructure developed for the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We integrate the data products released by the DES Data Management and additional products created by the DES collaboration in an environment known as DES Science Portal. Each step involved in the creation of a science-ready catalog is recorded in a relational database and can be recovered at any time. We describe how the DES Science Portal automates the creation and characterization of lightweight catalogs for DES Year 1 Annual Release, and show its flexibility in creating multiple catalogs with different inputs and configurations. Finally, we discuss the advantages of this infrastructure for large surveys such as DES and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. The capability of creating science-ready catalogs efficiently and with full control of the inputs and configurations used is an important asset for supporting science analysis using data from large astronomical surveys., Comment: The second paper of the series about the DES Science Portal, submitted to the Astronomy & Computing journal. N103B is a Type Ia supernova remnant (SNR) projected in the outskirt of the superbubble around the rich cluster NGC 1850 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We have obtained H$\alpha$ and continuum images of N103B with the $\textit{Hubble Space Telescope}$ ($\textit{HST}$) and high-dispersion spectra with 4m and 1.5m telescopes at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. The $\textit{HST}$ H$\alpha$ image exhibits a complex system of nebular knots inside an incomplete filamentary elliptical shell that opens to the east where X-ray and radio emission extends further out. Electron densities of the nebular knots, determined from the [S II] doublet, reach 5300 cm$^{-3}$, indicating an origin of circumstellar medium, rather than interstellar medium. The high-dispersion spectra reveal three kinematic components in N103B: (1) a narrow component with [N II]6583/H$\alpha$ $\sim$ 0.14 from the ionized interstellar gas associated with the superbubble of NGC 1850 in the background, (2) a broader H$\alpha$ component with no [N II] counterpart from the SNR's collisionless shocks into a mostly neutral ambient medium, and (3) a broad component, $\Delta V$ $\sim$ 500 km s$^{-1}$, in both H$\alpha$ and [N II] lines from shocked material in the nebular knots. The Balmer-dominated filaments can be fitted by an ellipse, and we adopt its center as the site of SN explosion. We find that the star closest to this explosion center has colors and luminosity consistent with a 1 $M_\odot$ surviving subgiant companion as modelled by Podsiadlowski. We present the first results of the High cadence Transient Survey (HiTS), a survey whose objective is to detect and follow up optical transients with characteristic timescales from hours to days, especially the earliest hours of supernova (SN) explosions. HiTS uses the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) and a custom made pipeline for image subtraction, candidate filtering and candidate visualization, which runs in real-time to be able to react rapidly to the new transients. We discuss the survey design, the technical challenges associated with the real-time analysis of these large volumes of data and our first results. In our 2013, 2014 and 2015 campaigns we have detected more than 120 young SN candidates, but we did not find a clear signature from the short-lived SN shock breakouts (SBOs) originating after the core collapse of red supergiant stars, which was the initial science aim of this survey. Using the empirical distribution of limiting-magnitudes from our observational campaigns we measured the expected recovery fraction of randomly injected SN light curves which included SBO optical peaks produced with models from Tominaga et al. (2011) and Nakar & Sari (2010). From this analysis we cannot rule out the models from Tominaga et al. (2011) under any reasonable distributions of progenitor masses, but we can marginally rule out the brighter and longer-lived SBO models from Nakar & Sari (2010) under our best-guess distribution of progenitor masses. We present cosmological constraints from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) using a combined analysis of angular clustering of red galaxies and their cross-correlation with weak gravitational lensing of background galaxies. We use a 139 square degree contiguous patch of DES data from the Science Verification (SV) period of observations. Using large scale measurements, we constrain the matter density of the Universe as Omega_m = 0.31 +/- 0.09 and the clustering amplitude of the matter power spectrum as sigma_8 = 0.74 +/- 0.13 after marginalizing over seven nuisance parameters and three additional cosmological parameters. This translates into S_8 = sigma_8(Omega_m/0.3)^{0.16} = 0.74 +/- 0.12 for our fiducial lens redshift bin at 0.35

The ESSENCE survey discovered 213 Type Ia supernovae at redshifts 0.1 < z < 0.81 between 2002 and 2008. We present their R and I-band photometry, measured from images obtained using the MOSAIC II camera at the CTIO 4 m Blanco telescope, along with rapid-response spectroscopy for each object. We use our spectroscopic follow-up observations to determine an accurate, quantitative classification and a precise redshift. Through an extensive calibration program we have improved the precision of the CTIO Blanco natural photometric system. We use several empirical metrics to measure our internal photometric consistency and our absolute calibration of the survey. We assess the effect of various potential sources of systematic bias on our measured fluxes, and we estimate that the dominant term in the systematic error budget from the photometric calibration on our absolute fluxes is ~1%., Comment: (40 pages, 21 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS)

We present spectroscopic confirmation of two new lensed quasars via data obtained at the 6.5m Magellan/Baade Telescope. The lens candidates have been selected from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and WISE based on their multi-band photometry and extended morphology in DES images. Images of DES J0115-5244 show two blue point sources at either side of a red galaxy. Our long-slit data confirm that both point sources are images of the same quasar at $z_{s}=1.64.$ The Einstein Radius estimated from the DES images is $0.51$". DES J2200+0110 is in the area of overlap between DES and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Two blue components are visible in the DES and SDSS images. The SDSS fiber spectrum shows a quasar component at $z_{s}=2.38$ and absorption compatible with Mg II and Fe II at $z_{l}=0.799$, which we tentatively associate with the foreground lens galaxy. The long-slit Magellan spectra show that the blue components are resolved images of the same quasar. The Einstein Radius is $0.68$" corresponding to an enclosed mass of $1.6\times10^{11}\,M_{\odot}.$ Three other candidates were observed and rejected, two being low-redshift pairs of starburst galaxies, and one being a quasar behind a blue star. These first confirmation results provide an important empirical validation of the data-mining and model-based selection that is being applied to the entire DES dataset., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, 2 tables, MNRAS subm. The science goals for ground-based large-area surveys, such as the Dark Energy Survey, Pan-STARRS, and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, require calibration of broadband photometry that is stable in time and uniform over the sky to precisions of a per cent or better. This performance will need to be achieved with data taken over the course of many years, and often in less than ideal conditions. This paper describes a strategy to achieve precise internal calibration of imaging survey data taken in less than photometric conditions, and reports results of an observational study of the techniques needed to implement this strategy. We find that images of celestial fields used in this case study with stellar densities of order one per arcmin-squared and taken through cloudless skies can be calibrated with relative precision of 0.5 per cent (reproducibility). We report measurements of spatial structure functions of cloud absorption observed over a range of atmospheric conditions, and find it possible to achieve photometric measurements that are reproducible to 1 per cent in images that were taken through cloud layers that transmit as little as 25 per cent of the incident optical flux (1.5 magnitudes of extinction). We find, however, that photometric precision below 1 per cent is impeded by the thinnest detectable cloud layers. We present results from mid-IR spectroscopic observations of two young supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) done with the {\it Spitzer Space Telescope}. We imaged SNRs B0509-67.5 and B0519-69.0 with {\it Spitzer} in 2005, and follow-up spectroscopy presented here confirms the presence of warm, shock heated dust, with no lines present in the spectrum. We use model fits to {\it Spitzer} IRS data to estimate the density of the postshock gas. Both remnants show asymmetries in the infrared images, and we interpret bright spots as places where the forward shock is running into material that is several times denser than elsewhere. The densities we infer for these objects depend on the grain omposition assumed, and we explore the effects of differing grain porosity on the model fits. We also analyze archival {\it XMM-Newton} RGS spectroscopic data, where both SNRs show strong lines of both Fe and Si, coming from ejecta, as well as strong O lines, which may come from ejecta or shocked ambient medium. We use model fits to IRS spectra to predict X-ray O line strengths for various grain models and values of the shock compression ratio. For 0509-67.5, we find that compact (solid) grain models require nearly all O lines in X-ray spectra to originate in reverse-shocked ejecta. Porous dust grains would lower the strength of ejecta lines relative to those arising in the shocked ambient medium. In 0519-69.0, we find significant evidence for a higher than standard compression ratio of 12, implying efficient cosmic-ray acceleration by the blast wave. A compact grain model is favored over porous grain models. We present near and mid-infrared observations of the pulsar-wind nebula (PWN) B0540-69.3 and its associated supernova remnant made with the {\it Spitzer Space Telescope}. We report detections of the PWN with all four IRAC bands, the 24 $\mu$m band of MIPS, and the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS). We find no evidence of IR emission from the X-ray/radio shell surrounding the PWN resulting from the forward shock of the supernova blast wave. The flux of the PWN itself is dominated by synchrotron emission at shorter (IRAC) wavelengths, with a warm dust component longward of 20 $\mu$m. We show that this dust continuum can be explained by a small amount ($\sim 1-3 \times 10^{-3} \msun$) of dust at a temperature of $\sim 50-65$ K, heated by the shock wave generated by the PWN being driven into the inner edge of the ejecta. This is evidently dust synthesized in the supernova. We also report the detection of several lines in the spectrum of the PWN, and present kinematic information about the PWN as determined from these lines. Kinematics are consistent with previous optical studies of this object. Line strengths are also broadly consistent with what one expects from optical line strengths. We find that lines arise from slow ($\sim 20$ km s$^{-1}$) shocks driven into oxygen-rich clumps in the shell swept-up by an iron-nickel bubble, which have a density contrast of $\sim 100-200$ relative to the bulk of the ejecta, and that faster shocks ($\sim 250$ km s$^{-1}$) in the hydrogen envelope are required to heat dust grains to observed temperatures. (Abridged) We describe here the most ambitious survey currently planned in the optical, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). A vast array of science will be enabled by a single wide-deep-fast sky survey, and LSST will have unique survey capability in the faint time domain. The LSST design is driven by four main science themes: probing dark energy and dark matter, taking an inventory of the Solar System, exploring the transient optical sky, and mapping the Milky Way. LSST will be a wide-field ground-based system sited at Cerro Pach\'{o}n in northern Chile. The telescope will have an 8.4 m (6.5 m effective) primary mirror, a 9.6 deg$^2$ field of view, and a 3.2 Gigapixel camera. The standard observing sequence will consist of pairs of 15-second exposures in a given field, with two such visits in each pointing in a given night. With these repeats, the LSST system is capable of imaging about 10,000 square degrees of sky in a single filter in three nights. The typical 5$\sigma$ point-source depth in a single visit in $r$ will be $\sim 24.5$ (AB). The project is in the construction phase and will begin regular survey operations by 2022. The survey area will be contained within 30,000 deg$^2$ with $\delta<+34.5^\circ$, and will be imaged multiple times in six bands, $ugrizy$, covering the wavelength range 320--1050 nm. About 90\% of the observing time will be devoted to a deep-wide-fast survey mode which will uniformly observe a 18,000 deg$^2$ region about 800 times (summed over all six bands) during the anticipated 10 years of operations, and yield a coadded map to $r\sim27.5$. The remaining 10\% of the observing time will be allocated to projects such as a Very Deep and Fast time domain survey. We present images and light curves of the bipolar Planetary Nebula RPJ 053059-683542 that was discovered in the Reid-Parker AAO/UKST H-alpha survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The emission from this object appears entirely nebular, with the central star apparently obscured by a central band of absorption that bisects the nebula. The light curves, which were derived from images from the SuperMACHO project at CTIO, showed significant, spatially resolved variability over the period 2002 January through 2005 December. Remarkably, the emission from the two bright lobes of the nebula vary either independently, or similarly but with a phase lag of at least one year. The optical spectra show a low level of nebular excitation, and only modest N enrichment. Infrared photometry from the 2MASS and SAGE surveys indicates the presence of a significant quantity of dust. The available data imply that the central star has a close binary companion, and that the system has undergone some kind of outburst event that caused the nebular emission to first brighten and then fade. Further monitoring, high-resolution imaging, and detailed IR polarimetry and spectroscopy would uncover the nature of this nebula and the unseen ionizing source., Comment: Accepted for ApJ Letters; 6 pages

Motivated by the recognition that variation in the optical transmission of the atmosphere is probably the main limitation to the precision of ground-based CCD measurements of celestial fluxes, we review the physical processes that attenuate the passage of light through the Earth's atmosphere. The next generation of astronomical surveys, such as PanSTARRS and LSST, will greatly benefit from dedicated apparatus to obtain atmospheric transmission data that can be associated with each survey image. We review and compare various approaches to this measurement problem, including photometry, spectroscopy, and LIDAR. In conjunction with careful measurements of instrumental throughput, atmospheric transmission measurements should allow next-generation imaging surveys to produce photometry of unprecedented precision. Our primary concerns are the real-time determination of aerosol scattering and absorption by water along the line of sight, both of which can vary over the course of a night's observations., Comment: 41 pages, 14 figures. We describe the scientific motivation for achieving photometric precision and accuracy below the 1% level, and we present a calibration philosophy based on using calibrated detectors rather than celestial sources as the fundamental metrology reference. A description of the apparatus and methodology is presented, as well as preliminary measurements of relative system throughput vs. wavelength for the Mosaic imager at the CTIO Blanco 4m telescope. We measure the throughput of the optics, filter, and detector by comparing the flux seen by the instrument to that seen by a precisely calibrated monitor photodiode, using a tunable laser as the illumination source. This allows us to measure the transmission properties of the system, passband by passband, with full pupil illumination of the entire optical train. We present a set of 11 type Ia supernova (SN Ia) lightcurves with dense, pre-maximum sampling. These supernovae (SNe), in galaxies behind the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), were discovered by the SuperMACHO survey. The SNe span a redshift range of z = 0.11 - 0.35. Our lightcurves contain some of the earliest pre-maximum observations of SNe Ia to date. We also give a functional model that describes the SN Ia lightcurve shape (in our VR-band). Our function uses the "expanding fireball" model of Goldhaber et al. (1998) to describe the rising lightcurve immediately after explosion but constrains it to smoothly join the remainder of the lightcurve. We fit this model to a composite observed VR-band lightcurve of three SNe between redshifts of 0.135 to 0.165. These SNe have not been K-corrected or adjusted to account for reddening. In this redshift range, the observed VR-band most closely matches the rest frame V-band. Using the best fit to our functional description of the lightcurve, we find the time between explosion and observed VR-band maximum to be 17.6+-1.3(stat)+-0.07(sys) rest-frame days for a SN Ia with a VR-band Delta m_{-10} of 0.52mag. We present first results from an extensive survey of Magellanic Clouds supernova remnants (SNRs) with the Spitzer Space Telescope. We describe IRAC and MIPS imaging observations at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8, 24, and 70 microns of four Balmer-dominated Type Ia SNRs in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC): DEM L71 (0505-67.9), 0509--67.5, 0519--69.0, and 0548-70.4. None was detected in the four short-wavelength IRAC bands, but all four were clearly imaged at 24 microns, and two at 70 microns. A comparison of these images to Chandra broadband X-ray images shows a clear association with the blast wave, and not with internal X-ray emission associated with ejecta. Our observations are well described by 1-D shock models of collisionally heated dust emission, including grain size distributions appropriate for the LMC, grain heating by collisions with both ions and electrons, and sputtering of small grains. Model parameters are constrained by X-ray, optical, and far-ultraviolet observations. Our models can reproduce observed 70/24 micron flux ratios only by including sputtering, destroying most grains smaller than 0.03-0.04 microns in radius. We infer total dust masses swept up by the SNR blast waves, before sputtering, of order 0.01 solar masses, several times less than those implied by a dust/gas mass ratio of 0.3 percent as often assumed for the LMC. We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of 23 high redshift supernovae spanning a range of z=0.34-1.03, 9 of which are unambiguously classified as Type Ia. These supernovae were discovered during the IfA Deep Survey, which began in September 2001 and observed a total of 2.5 square degrees to a depth of approximately m=25-26 in RIZ over 9-17 visits, typically every 1-3 weeks for nearly 5 months, with additional observations continuing until April 2002. We give a brief description of the survey motivations, observational strategy, and reduction process. This sample of 23 high-redshift supernovae includes 15 at z>0.7, doubling the published number of objects at these redshifts, and indicates that the evidence for acceleration of the universe is not due to a systematic effect proportional to redshift. In combination with the recent compilation of Tonry et al. (2003), we calculate cosmological parameter density contours which are consistent with the flat universe indicated by the CMB (Spergel et al. 2003). Adopting the constraint that Omega_total = 1.0, we obtain best-fit values of (Omega_m, Omega_Lambda)=(0.33, 0.67) using 22 SNe from this survey augmented by the literature compilation. We show that using the empty-beam model for gravitational lensing does not eliminate the need for Omega_Lambda > 0. We present the results of a study of the host galaxies of high redshift Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). We provide a catalog of 18 hosts of SNe Ia observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) by the High-z Supernova Search Team (HZT), including images, scale-lengths, measurements of integrated (Hubble equivalent) BVRIZ photometry in bands where the galaxies are brighter than m ~ 25 mag, and galactocentric distances of the supernovae. We compare the residuals of SN Ia distance measurements from cosmological fits to measurable properties of the supernova host galaxies that might be expected to correlate with variable properties of the progenitor population, such as host galaxy color and position of the supernova. We find mostly null results; the current data are generally consistent with no correlations of the distance residuals with host galaxy properties in the redshift range 0.42 < z < 1.06. Although a subsample of SN hosts shows a formally significant (3-sigma) correlation between apparent V-R host color and distance residuals, the correlation is not consistent with the null results from other host colors probed by our largest samples. There is also evidence for the same correlations between SN Ia properties and host type at low redshift and high redshift. These similarities support the current practice of extrapolating properties of the nearby population to high redshifts pending more robust detections of any correlations between distance residuals from cosmological fits and host properties., Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in AJ

We report results from high resolution optical spectroscopy of three non-radiative galactic supernova remnants, RCW 86, Kepler's supernova remnant and SN 1006. We have measured the narrow component H-alpha line widths in Balmer-dominated filaments in RCW 86 and SN 1006, as well as the narrow component width in a Balmer-dominated knot in Kepler's SNR. The narrow component line widths measured in RCW 86 and Kepler's SNR show FWHM of 30-40 km/s, similar to what has been seen in other Balmer-dominated remnants. Of the remnants in our sample, SN 1006 is the fastest shock (~3000 km/s). The narrow component H-alpha and H-beta lines in this remnant have a FWHM of merely 21 km/s. Comparing the narrow component widths measured in our sample with those measured in other remnants shows that the width of the narrow component does not correlate in a simple way with the shock velocity. The High-z Supernova Search Team has discovered and observed 8 new supernovae in the redshift interval z=0.3-1.2. These independent observations, confirm the result of Riess et al. (1998a) and Perlmutter et al. (1999) that supernova luminosity distances imply an accelerating universe. More importantly, they extend the redshift range of consistently observed SN Ia to z~1, where the signature of cosmological effects has the opposite sign of some plausible systematic effects. Consequently, these measurements not only provide another quantitative confirmation of the importance of dark energy, but also constitute a powerful qualitative test for the cosmological origin of cosmic acceleration. We find a rate for SN Ia of 1.4+/-0.5E-04 h^3/Mpc^3/yr at a mean redshift of 0.5. We present distances and host extinctions for 230 SN Ia. These place the following constraints on cosmological quantities: if the equation of state parameter of the dark energy is w=-1, then H0 t0 = 0.96+/-0.04, and O_l - 1.4 O_m = 0.35+/-0.14. Including the constraint of a flat Universe, we find O_m = 0.28+/-0.05, independent of any large-scale structure measurements. Adopting a prior based on the 2dF redshift survey constraint on O_m and assuming a flat universe, we find that the equation of state parameter of the dark energy lies in the range -1.48-1, we obtain w<-0.73 at 95% confidence. Dynamical studies of superbubbles and Wolf-Rayet ring nebulae show discrepancies from the standard, adiabatic model for wind-blown bubbles. We therefore study the physical properties and kinematics of three candidate bubbles blown by single O stars, to evaluate whether these discrepancies are also found in these simpler objects. Our sample candidates are N44F, N44J, and N44M, in the outskirts of the HII complex N44 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We have obtained ground-based and HST emission-line images and high dispersion echelle spectra for these objects. From the Halpha luminosities and the [OIII]/Halpha ratios of these nebulae, we estimate the spectral types of the ionizing stars to be O7V, O9.5V and O9.5V for N44F, N44J, and N44M, respectively. We find that the observed expansion velocity of 12 km/s for N44F is consistent with the stellar wind luminosity expected from the central ionizing star, as predicted by the standard bubble model. The observed upper limits for the expansion velocities of N44J and N44M are also compatible with the expected values, within the uncertainties. We also report the discovery in N44F of strongly-defined dust columns, similar to those seen in the Eagle Nebula. The photoevaporation of these dense dust features may be kinematically important and may actually govern the evolution of the shell. The inclusion of photoevaporation processes may thus undermine the apparent agreement between the observed bubble dynamics and the simple adiabatic models., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures (jpg), to be published in AJ. We present an observational and theoretical study of the optical emission from nonradiative shocks in three supernova remnants: the Cygnus Loop, RCW 86 and Tycho. The spectra of these shocks are dominated by collisionally excited hydrogen Balmer lines which have both a broad component caused by proton-neutral charge exchange and a narrow component caused by excitation of cold neutrals entering the shock. In each remnant we have obtained the broad to narrow flux ratios of the Halpha and Hbeta lines and measured the Halpha broad component width. A new numerical shock code computes the broad and narrow Balmer line emission from nonradiative shocks in partially neutral gas. The Balmer line fluxes are sensitive to Lyman line trapping and the degree of electron-proton temperature equilibration. The code calculates the density, temperature and size of the postshock ionization layer and uses a Monte Carlo simulation to compute narrow Balmer line enhancement from Lyman line trapping. The initial fraction of the shock energy allocated to the electrons and protons (the equilibration) is a free parameter. Our models show that variations in electron-proton temperature equilibration and Lyman line trapping can reproduce the observed range of broad to narrow ratios. The results give 80%-100% equilibration in nonradiative portions of the NE Cygnus Loop (v_shock ~ 300 km/s), 40%-50% equilibration in nonradiative portions of RCW 86 (v_shock ~ 600 km/s) and <~ 20% equilibration in Tycho (v_shock ~ 2000 km/s). Our results suggst an inverse correlation between magnetosonic Mach number and equilibration in the observed remnants., Comment: 48 pages, including 12 figures

We present optical spectra, obtained with the Keck 10-m telescope, of two high-redshift type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) discovered by the High-z Supernova Search Team: SN 1999ff at z=0.455 and SN 1999fv at z~1.2, the highest-redshift published SN Ia spectrum. Both SNe were at maximum light when the spectra were taken. We compare our high-z spectra with low-z normal and peculiar SNe Ia as well as with SNe Ic, Ib, and II. There are no significant differences between SN 1999ff and normal SNe Ia at low redshift. We have measured the rest-frame B,V, and I-band light curves of a high-redshift type Ia supernova (SN Ia), SN 1999Q (z=0.46), using HST and ground-based near-infrared detectors. A goal of this study is the measurement of the color excess, E_{B-I}, which is a sensitive indicator of interstellar or intergalactic dust which could affect recent cosmological measurements from high-redshift SNe Ia. Our observations disfavor a 30% opacity of SN Ia visual light by dust as an alternative to an accelerating Universe. This statement applies to both Galactic-type dust (rejected at the 3.4 sigma confidence level) and greyer dust (grain size > 0.1 microns; rejected at the 2.3 to 2.6 sigma confidence level) as proposed by Aguirre (1999). The rest-frame $I$-band light cur ve shows the secondary maximum a month after B maximum typical of nearby SNe Ia of normal luminosi ty, providing no indication of evolution as a function of redshift out to z~0.5. We have used archival ROSAT data to present X-ray images of thirty-one supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We have classified these remnants according to their X-ray morphologies, into the categories of Shell-Type, Diffuse Face, Centrally Brightened, Point-Source Dominated, and Irregular. We suggest possible causes of the X-ray emission for each category, and for individual features of some of the SNRs., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures (9 figure files). We have obtained high-resolution HI observations of N44, one of the largest HII complexes in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The distribution and internal motions of the HI gas show dynamic effects of fast stellar winds and supernova blasts. Numerous HI holes are detected, with the most prominent two corresponding to the optically identified superbubbles Shell 1 and Shell 2. The HI gas associated with Shell 1 shows an expansion pattern similar to that of the ionized gas shell, but the mass and kinetic energy of the HI shell are 3--7 times those of the ionized gas shell. The total kinetic energy of the neutral and ionized gas of Shell 1 is still more than a factor of 5 lower than expected in a pressure-driven superbubble. It is possible that the central OB association was formed in a molecular cloud and a visible superbubble was not fully developed until the ambient molecular gas had been dissociated and cleared away. This hypothesis is supported by the existence of a molecular cloud toward N44 and the fact that the apparent dynamic age of the superbubble Shell 1 is much shorter than the age of its OB association LH47. Accelerated HI gas is detected at the supernova remnant 0523-679. The mass and kinetic energy in the associated HI gas are also much higher than those in the ionized gas of 0523-679. The High-Z Supernova Search is an international collaboration to discover and monitor type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) at $z > 0.2$ with the aim of measuring cosmic deceleration and global curvature. Our collaboration has pursued a basic understanding of supernovae in the nearby Universe, discovering and observing a large sample of objects, and developing methods to measure accurate distances with SN Ia. This paper describes the extension of this program to $z \geq 0.2$, outlining our search techniques and follow-up program. We have devised high-throughput filters which provide accurate two-color restframe $B$ and $V$ light curves of SN Ia, enabling us to produce precise, extinction-corrected luminosity distances in the range $0.25 < z < 0.55$. Sources of systematic error from K-corrections, extinction, selection effects, and evolution are investigated, and their effects estimated. We present photometric and spectral observations of SN 1995K, our program's first supernova, and use the data to obtain a precise measurement of the luminosity distance to the $z=0.479$ host galaxy. This object, when combined with a nearby sample of SN, yields an estimate for the matter density of the Universe of $\Omega_M = -0.2^{+1.0}_{-0.8}$ if $\Omega_\Lambda = 0$. For a spatially flat universe composed of normal matter and a cosmological constant, we find $\Omega_M = 0.4^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$, $\Omega_\Lambda = 0.6^{+0.4}_{-0.5}$. We demonstrate that with a sample of $\sim 30$ objects, we should be able to determine relative luminosity distances over the range $0 < z< 0.5$ with sufficient precision to measure $\Omega_M$ with an uncertainty of $\pm 0.2$., Comment: 51 pages, 14 figures, To Appear in the Astrophysical Journal

We present observations of 10 type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) between 0.16 < z < 0.62. With previous data from our High-Z Supernova Search Team, this expanded set of 16 high-redshift supernovae and 34 nearby supernovae are used to place constraints on the Hubble constant (H_0), the mass density (Omega_M), the cosmological constant (Omega_Lambda), the deceleration parameter (q_0), and the dynamical age of the Universe (t_0). The distances of the high-redshift SNe Ia are, on average, 10% to 15% farther than expected in a low mass density (Omega_M=0.2) Universe without a cosmological constant. Different light curve fitting methods, SN Ia subsamples, and prior constraints unanimously favor eternally expanding models with positive cosmological constant (i.e., Omega_Lambda > 0) and a current acceleration of the expansion (i.e., q_0 < 0). With no prior constraint on mass density other than Omega_M > 0, the spectroscopically confirmed SNe Ia are consistent with q_0 <0 at the 2.8 sigma and 3.9 sigma confidence levels, and with Omega_Lambda >0 at the 3.0 sigma and 4.0 sigma confidence levels, for two fitting methods respectively. Fixing a ``minimal'' mass density, Omega_M=0.2, results in the weakest detection, Omega_Lambda>0 at the 3.0 sigma confidence level. For a flat-Universe prior (Omega_M+Omega_Lambda=1), the spectroscopically confirmed SNe Ia require Omega_Lambda >0 at 7 sigma and 9 sigma level for the two fitting methods. A Universe closed by ordinary matter (i.e., Omega_M=1) is ruled out at the 7 sigma to 8 sigma level. We estimate the size of systematic errors, including evolution, extinction, sample selection bias, local flows, gravitational lensing, and sample contamination. We report the discovery of Balmer-dominated filaments along almost the complete periphery of the supernova remnant RCW 86 (also known as G 315.2-2.3 or MSH 14-63). Using the UM/CTIO Curtis Schmidt telescope, we obtained deep CCD images in the emission of Halpha and [S II], together with continuum images to remove stellar confusion. After continuum subtraction, we discovered a network of Halpha filaments reaching almost completely around the remnant. Most of the newly identified filaments show no corresponding [S II] emission, indicating that they belong to the peculiar ''Balmer-dominated'' class of filaments. Comparison of these Balmer filaments with existing radio and X-ray images of RCW 86 shows an overall similarity, although interesting differences are apparent upon detailed inspection. While further observations of these newly identified optical filaments may eventually provide more detailed information on the kinematics and distance to RCW 86, the distance currently remains uncertain. The large H II complex N11 in the Large Magellanic Cloud contains OB associations at several different stages in their life histories. We have obtained ROSAT PSPC and HRI X-ray observations, Curtis Schmidt CCD images, echelle spectra in H-alpha and [N II] lines, and IUE interstellar absorption line observations of this region. The central bubble of N11 has an X-ray luminosity a factor of only 3-7 brighter than predicted for an energy-conserving superbubble, making this the first detection of X-ray emission from a superbubble without a strong X-ray excess. The region N11B contains an extremely young OB association analogous to the central association of the Carina nebula, apparently still embedded in its natal molecular cloud. We find that N11B emits diffuse X-ray emission, probably powered by stellar winds. Finally, we compare the tight cluster HD32228 in N11 to R136 in 30 Dor. The Sombrero galaxy, NGC 4594, contains the most numerous globular cluster system of any nearby spiral. It is an ideal candidate in which to study the globular clusters and contrast them with those in Local Group spirals. Here we present B and I imaging from the CTIO Schmidt telescope which gives a field-of-view of 31' x 31'. Using DAOPHOT we have detected over 400 globular clusters and derived their magnitudes, B--I colors and photometric metallicities. We have attempted to separate our sample into disk and bulge/halo globular cluster populations, based on location in the galaxy. There is some evidence that the disk population is more metal--rich than the bulge/halo globular clusters, however contamination, dust reddening and small number statistics makes this result very tentative. We find that the median metallicity of the bulge/halo globular clusters is [Fe/H] = -0.8. This metallicity is consistent with previous estimates based on smaller samples. It is also similar to the metallicity predicted by the globular cluster metallicity -- galaxy luminosity relation. As with our Galaxy, there is no radial metallicity gradient in the halo globular clusters. We have used optical echelle spectra along with ROSAT and ASCA X-ray spectra to test the hypothesis that the southern portion of the N44 X-ray bright region is the result of a blowout structure. Three pieces of evidence now support this conclusion. First, the filamentary optical morphology corresponding with the location of the X-ray bright South Bar suggests the blowout description (Chu et al 1993). Second, optical echelle spectra show evidence of high velocity (~90 km/sec) gas in the region of the blowout. Third, X-ray spectral fits show a lower temperature for the South Bar than the main superbubble region of Shell 1. At 2.5 min southeast of SN 1987A, the Honeycomb Nebula Supernova remnant (SNR) is named after its interesting morphology, which consists of over ten loops with sizes of 2-3 pc. High-dispersion spectra of these loops show hemispheres expanding toward the observer at 100-300 km/s. Using archival data X-ray data and a combination of new and archival radio data, we find bright X-ray and nonthermal radio emisssion associated with the Honeycomb Nebula. New CCD images further show enhanced (S II) H-alpha ratios. These results confirm a model in which the Honeycomb Nebula is due to a supernova shock front, traveling toward the observer, encountering an intervening sheet of dense, but porous, interstellar gas. The bulk of the supernova remnant resides in a low-density cavity, and is not otherwise visible. The situation is similar to the hidden supernova remnants postulated for the X-ray bright superbubbles. The Honeycomb Nebula has an unusually steep radio spectral index (S(sub nu) is proportional to nu(exp -1.2)), normally associated with young SNRs.

We discovered two extended x-ray sources in a Roentgen Satellite (ROSAT) Positron Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) observation pointed at the H II region N9 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. These two sources are in the H II regions N4D and N9. The x-ray characteristics suggest that both might be supernova remnants (SNRs). Follow-up charge coupled device (CCD) images taken with interference filters show high (S II)/H-alpha ratios in the optical nebulae of these x-ray sources, confirming the presence of high velocity shocks commonly seen in SNRs. These two sources are also detected in the radio continuum at 8.55 and 4.75 GHz; both appear nonthermal compared to nearby H II regions. The confirmation of these two SNRs demonstrates that many SNRs in or near H II regions have been overlooked in previous surveys, and that the ROSAT x-ray survey combined with an optical CCD imaging survey of the Magellanic Clouds would provide the most effective way to uncover SNRs.

We present ROSAT high resolution x-ray images of two previously cataloged supernova remnants in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC): 0101-72.4 and 0104-72.3. These remnants were known to show optical, x-ray, and radio emission based on earlier observations: the present data show the first evidence for arcsecond-scale x-ray structure. There is no diffuse x-ray emission associated with the optically emitting shell in 0101-72.4; we set a 3 sigma upper limit of 7 x 10(exp 34) erg s(exp -1) on the 0.02-2 keV luminosity from the region. The x-ray emission comes instead from a weak pointlike object near the limb of the remnant. Optical observations of this source reveal a m(sub v) = 14.8 blue star with H alpha and H beta in emission; we identify this as a Be star in the SMC. No evidence for variability down to time scales of about 1 s was found in the ROSAT data; however, a comparison of the ROSAT and Einstein fluxes indicates possible long term variability by a factor of approximately 2 over several years. The other SNR, 0104-72.3, also contains a pointlike x-ray source with a blue optical counterpart (m(sub v) = 16.7) and H alpha emission. We tentatively identify this as a Be star as well. In addition to the point source there is weak diffuse x-ray emission from 0104-72.3 (L(sub x) approximately 1.4 x 10(exp 35) erg s(exp -1)), but the remnant's appearance in the x-ray band is considerably different from that in either the radio or optical band. We argue for a physical association between the supernova remnants (SNRs) and Be/x-ray stars. A large space velocity (greater than or approximately 100 km s(exp -1)) for the Be/x-ray binaries is required if the explosions that produced the remnants also formed the neutron stars in the binaries. Alternatively, the associations could be the result of common membership in OB associations in the SMC.

We present high-resolution spectra of the four Balmar-dominated supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). These data allow us to measure the width of the narrow component of H alpha emission in the nonradiative filaments present in these SNRs. We find that the widths range from 30 to 50 km/s FWHM, similar to the only previously measured width of a nonradiative shock filament, that of about 30 km/s in the NE Cygnus Loop. The line widths do not appear to scale with shock velocity. These observations severely limit the possible broadening mechanisms. We discuss several possibilities, the most promising of which is a precursor associtated with cosmic rays. Assuming a cosmic-ray precursor, we are able to place constraints on the cosmic-ray diffusion coefficient. Observations such as these may provide the best method currently available to probe cosmic-ray acceleration in SNR shock waves.

Spectra are presented for SN 1986J in NGC 891, observed 4 and 7 years after the explosion, and SN 1980K, observed 9 years after maximum light. A narrow-line and a broad-line component are noted in SN 1986J; these are respectively attributed to a circumstellar shell and the actual stellar interior (without hydrogen). SN 1980K continues to emit in very broad lines. Comparison with earlier observations suggests that this SN halted its exponential flux decline in the early 1980s, and is currently emitting at a constant rate. In both SNs studies, the identity of the energy source which sustains emission remains uncertain.
