2. Validating a TPACK Instrument for 7-12 Mathematics In-Service Middle and High School Teachers in the United States

Abstract

This study fills a gap with TPACK instrumentation by validating a survey instrument for use specifically with secondary mathematics in-service teachers in the United States using an instrument originally developed in Australia (Handal et al., 2012). A comparable national sample was surveyed in the U.S. to the original Australian instrumentation study. Findings revealed the factor structure of the Australian TPACK instrument differed when used in the U.S. and presents a new validated instrument (TPACK-M-US) for use with secondary mathematics in-service teachers in the U.S. We provide three sources of validity evidence (e.g. Instrument or Test Content, Internal Structure, Response Processes). Appropriate uses and interpretations are discussed in addition to the importance of validation research for educational settings.

7. Understanding the influences on quit motivation and smoking cessation in older smokers from deprived backgrounds

Abstract

There is little evidence regarding the optimal smoking cessation intervention for older smokers from deprived backgrounds. An increased understanding of behavioural influences on quit motivation and smoking cessation is needed to adapt smoking cessation interventions for this population. Older smokers from deprived backgrounds are seldom-heard and have an increased risk of a number of health conditions, including lung cancer. These individuals are eligible for targeted lung cancer screening yet are least likely to take part and for whom lung screening could offer a teachable moment for smoking cessation. Research was undertaken to identify factors influencing quit motivation and smoking cessation in the target population. PRIME was the main theory selected for use in the PhD. Findings from a systematic review demonstrated that there were limited data to identify the optimal form of behavioural smoking cessation intervention for the target population. However, intense multimodal behavioural counselling using incentives and peer facilitators, delivered in a community setting and tailored to individual needs indicated a positive impact on smoking outcomes. A crosssectional population based survey showed that interventions are needed to increase self-efficacy for quitting, dispel risk-minimising beliefs and target elements of previous quit attempts that were associated with motivation to stop smoking. Qualitative interviews with smokers who declined smoking cessation support at the time of a lung cancer screening demonstrated that the wider determinants of smoking, including a lack of social support, pre-existing health conditions and intense social isolation, impact an individual's quit motivation. Findings were used to develop a set of recommendations for adapting an existing smoking cessation intervention for the target population using the ADAPT guidance. Intensive behavioural support that incorporates referral to local health and wellbeing support could be implemented as a strategy to reduce the impact of the wider determinants of smoking in the target population and warrants further feasibility and pilot testing.

Abstract

There has been extensive discussion about gender gaps in representation and career advancement in the sciences. However, psychological science itself has yet to be the focus of discussion or systematic review, despite our field's investment in questions of equity, status, well-being, gender bias, and gender disparities. In the present article, we consider 10 topics relevant for women's career advancement in psychological science. We focus on issues that have been the subject of empirical study, discuss relevant evidence within and outside of psychological science, and draw on established psychological theory and social-science research to begin to chart a path forward. We hope that better understanding of these issues within the field will shed light on areas of existing gender gaps in the discipline and areas where positive change has happened, and spark conversation within our field about how to create lasting change to mitigate remaining gender differences in psychological science.

Abstract

Because powerful people's thinking is impactful, it is critical to understand how power affects cognition. We detail how recent empirical findings reveal that power often improves cognitive functioning. First, power increases controlled processing, in particular intentionality. Second, power improves executive functioning, leading individuals to exhibit better inhibition, working memory, and cognitive flexibility. Third, power increases abstract thinking. Synthesizing these last two points, we propose that high-power individuals' executive functions are enhanced due to their more abstract way of thinking. Both the greater social distance and reduced cognitive vigilance accompanying increased power could explain these effects. Finally, we note remaining questions, such as how much power's cognitive effects are driven by a subjective sense of power versus objective control.

Abstract

High-power people frequently receive compliments from subordinates, yet little is known about how high-power people respond to praise. The current research addresses this gap in the empirical literature by testing the primary hypothesis that high-power people discount others’ praise more than equal- and low-power people. Secondary hypotheses also tested whether high-power people’s tendency to discount positive feedback would paradoxically heighten negative perceptions of others. Evidence from two experiments (one preregistered) reveals that high-power participants discounted feedback from others more than low- and equal-power participants. However, high-power people’s tendency to discount feedback only produced negative partner perceptions when positive feedback, but not neutral feedback, was discounted. These results suggest that compliments may sometimes backfire and lead high-power people to discount praise and form negative impressions of subordinates.
