3. Finding the Rhythm: Teaching Choral Music during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic required choral music educators to abruptly shift their curriculums, expectations, and perspectives to effectively deliver content and meet their student's educational and emotional needs during this unprecedented time in education. This qualitative study highlights the voices of high school choral music educators to gain insight into the challenges they were facing and adjustments they were making one year into the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants also recognized some unexpected benefits of teaching choral music during the pandemic. By understanding the challenges of teaching during the pandemic and investigating the innovations in choral music education, educators can better prepare for post-pandemic instruction.

10. Mendelian or Multifactorial? Current Undergraduate Genetics Assessments Focus on Genes and Rarely Include the Environment

Abstract

Undergraduate genetics courses have historically focused on simple genetic models, rather than taking a more multifactorial approach where students explore how traits are influenced by a combination of genes, the environment, and gene-by-environment interactions. While a focus on simple genetic models can provide straightforward examples to promote student learning, they do not match the current scientific understanding and can result in deterministic thinking among students. In addition, undergraduates are often interested in complex human traits that are influenced by the environment, and national curriculum standards include learning objectives that focus on multifactorial concepts. This research aims to discover to what extent multifactorial genetics is currently being assessed in undergraduate genetics courses. To address this, we analyzed over 1,000 assessment questions from a commonly used undergraduate genetics textbook; published concept assessments; and open-source, peer-reviewed curriculum materials. Our findings show that current genetics assessment questions overwhelmingly emphasize the impact of genes on phenotypes and that the effect of the environment is rarely addressed. These results indicate a need for the inclusion of more multifactorial genetics concepts, and we suggest ways to introduce them into undergraduate courses.

20. Toward a Framework for Critical Racial Literacy

Abstract

Racial literacy was introduced in the early twenty-first century and has proliferated as a research framework and methodology. In education research specifically, racial literacy has been used as a foundation for empirical research and as a broader concept informing education practices. Mindful of this wide-ranging approach, a multidisciplinary team conducted a summative content analysis of extant education research explicitly drawing on racial literacy to survey the landscape of its applications and effects. We wanted to catalogue the ways racial literacy informs research in teaching and learning and how racial literacy might be used in 2020 and beyond. Evidence from this analysis illustrated varying ways researchers have viewed and appropriated racial literacy. From these findings, we consider implications of using racial literacy in education research and present an approach that moves towards a more unified and critical embodiment of racial literacy guided by the fact that Black lives and literacies matter.

21. Building Reengagement Readiness for Sustained Engagement in an Alternative High School

Abstract

There are ramifications for the educational loss that comes with student disengagement. Contemporary use of alternative high schools focuses on Tier III responses to intervention for disengaged students at comprehensive high schools. Alternative schools are affiliated with students disenfranchised by traditional educational institutions and are considered a subset of students that are not making adequate progress toward graduation (Lange & Sletten, 2002; Lehr et al., 2009.) Reengagement in an alternative setting is a solution that may be just a one-time opportunity as every attempt is significant to the individual behaviors presented (Cranston et al., 2016; Rittel & Webber, 1973). Staff encountering disengaged students may only have a one-time opportunity to resolve an issue that will reengage the student but, in turn, may open a new series of problems by their attending school. Disengaged students, in this study, are identified as "compliant," students who came to school every day yet failed to make sufficient credit-earning progress. Teachers of chronically disengaged learners can tell you nothing in the research explains how to reengage learners identified as "at-risk." Engagement, according to Sinatra et al. (2015), "is one of the hottest research topics in the field of educational psychology" (p.1). Unearthing the truth about why students disengage from learning and school is one of the most intractable problems of practice that researchers and educators have failed to address adequately. Yet, the front-line teacher must battle learner disengagement minute by minute during any given class period. The behaviors are affected by the lived reality of the individual student, such as adverse experiences that go beyond the present pandemic situation. Lawson and Lawson (2020) point out that disengagement trajectories stemming from adverse experiences can present themselves and create undesirable outcomes that lead to dropping out. The Action Research study applied the narratives of twelve students through the use of Cogenerative Dialogues. These dialogues allowed students to name the disengagement and provide insight into possible reengagement needs for promoting sustainable engagement. Additionally, the study used classroom observations, critical self-reflection, and collaborative conversations of six teachers working to reengage students at an alternative high school. 22. The University Classroom Observation Program: Connecting Middle and High School Teachers with University Instructors

Abstract

In the University Classroom Observation Program (UCOP), middle and high school teachers spend time on campus observing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) classes and engaging in discussions with colleagues and college instructors. The program provides a unique and reciprocal professional learning opportunity. Middle and high school teachers learn to use an observation protocol to collect data in STEM classrooms. These data serve as feedback for individual college instructors; help provide an aggregate snapshot of teaching throughout the university; and contribute to faculty professional learning opportunities, new teaching and learning initiatives, and the larger discipline-based education research (DBER) literature. UCOP offers middle and high school teachers discussion and networking opportunities to reflect on their own teaching and on ways to better prepare their students for college. Here we describe the program, articulate the benefits for stakeholders, reflect on lessons learned, and discuss important considerations for the development of similar programs. Abstract

Open educational resources, or OER, are teaching materials that reside in the public domain and are available under an open license. While the creation of high-quality materials and cyberinfrastructure to share these resources is important, OER are much more than static resource repositories. Vibrant OER communities function as collaboration hubs and often include librarians, instructional technologists, instructors, education researchers, funders, open-source software developers, and college administrators. Together, these individuals work as a community to respond to changes in the education landscape, support student learning impacts both in terms of cost savings and student retention, and solve issues related to broadly sharing open resources on the web. This essay provides general information about OER, describes communities developing OER for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education, and presents insights about sustainability challenges. The sustainability challenges are organized according to multiple dimensions: cultural and social, economic and financial, and technological and environmental. In addition, OER provide important opportunities to address and promote social justice and open and accessible education philosophies. Knowing more about the OER landscape, sustainability challenges, and educational justice opportunities can help instructors use and contribute to this growing movement to reshape the landscape of undergraduate education.

Abstract

Pediatric medulloblastoma (MB) is the most common solid malignant brain neoplasm, with Group 3 (G3) MB representing the most aggressive subgroup. MYC amplification is an independent poor prognostic factor in G3 MB, however, therapeutic targeting of the MYC pathway remains limited and alternative therapies for G3 MB are urgently needed. Here we show that the RNA-binding protein, Musashi-1 (MSI1) is an essential mediator of G3 MB in both MYC-overexpressing mouse models and patient-derived xenografts. MSI1 inhibition abrogates tumor initiation and significantly prolongs survival in both models. We identify binding targets of MSI1 in normal neural and G3 MB stem cells and then cross referenced these data with unbiased large-scale screens at the transcriptomic, translatomic and proteomic levels to systematically dissect its functional role. Comparative integrative multi-omic analyses of these large datasets reveal cancer-selective MSI1-bound targets sharing multiple MYC associated pathways, providing a valuable resource for context-specific therapeutic targeting of G3 MB.

Abstract

BackgroundThe first day of class helps students learn about what to expect from their instructors and courses. Messaging used by instructors, which varies in content and approach on the first day, shapes classroom social dynamics and can affect subsequent learning in a course. Prior work established the non-content Instructor Talk Framework to describe the language that instructors use to create learning environments, but little is known about the extent to which students detect those messages. In this study, we paired first day classroom observation data with results from student surveys to measure how readily students in introductory STEM courses detect non-content Instructor Talk.ResultsTo learn more about the instructor and student first day experiences, we studied 11 introductory STEM courses at two different institutions. The classroom observation data were used to characterize course structure and use of non-content Instructor Talk. The data revealed that all instructors spent time discussing their instructional practices, building instructor/student relationships, and sharing strategies for success with their students. After class, we surveyed students about the messages their instructors shared during the first day of class and determined that the majority of students from within each course detected messaging that occurred at a higher frequency. For lower frequency messaging, we identified nuances in what students detected that may help instructors as they plan their first day of class.ConclusionsFor instructors who dedicate the first day of class to establishing positive learning environments, these findings provide support that students are detecting the messages. Additionally, this study highlights the importance of instructors prioritizing the messages they deem most important and giving them adequate attention to more effectively reach students. Setting a positive classroom environment on the first day may lead to long-term impacts on student motivation and course retention. 48. 'ELO Design Challenge': Final Evaluation Report, 2017-2019

Abstract

High-quality afterschool and summer programming serve an important role in Nebraska communities. They engage students emotionally, intellectually, and socially (National Research Council, 2015). They provide safe and caring supervision for children who might otherwise be unsupervised outside of school hours, they also discourage negative behaviors, such as aggression and drug and alcohol use (Vandell, Reisner, & Pierce, 2007). They also present an opportunity to reinforce and enrich school day learning, hence, afterschool and summer programming have the potential to help students meet their academic goals. Research has shown that students in afterschool programs attend school more often, get better grades and test scores, make gains in reading and math, and improve their work habits and classroom behavior (Afterschool Alliance, 2014). The need for these types of programs is even more profound for students from low income families who typically lose two to three months in reading achievement and two months of math skills during the summer months (Alexander, Entwisle, & Steffel Olson, 2007). Yet despite these benefits, only 18% of Nebraska children participate in an afterschool program and only 19% of Nebraska families indicate that at least one child attended a summer enrichment program, although the demand for such programs is higher than our state's current capacity (Afterschool Alliance, 2014). Beatrice Public Schools received funding from the Nebraska Department of Education's Innovation Grant Phase I Developmental Grant fund to support an Expanded Learning Opportunity Design Challenge ("ELO Design Challenge"). The project is led by Beyond School Bells (BSB), statewide public-private partnership within the Nebraska Children and Families Foundation, with support from Nebraska Extension, educational advocates, and community stakeholders. The "ELO Design Challenge" is a statewide partnership to not only begin to close the gap between the demand for and access to high-quality afterschool and summer programing by creating five new programs in Nebraska communities, but also to serve as a prototype that would allow other Nebraska communities to develop economically viable models of summer and afterschool programming supporting K-8 students and school success. The long-term goal of the "ELO Design Challenge" is the creation of new models of ELO programming and enhancement of existing programs by providing K-8 students across Nebraska with additional hands-on, project-based learning opportunities enhancing student success. This report is an evaluation of the program.
