Wheel–rail surface damage in curves can be effectively reduced with a lower vehicle Primary Yaw Stiffness (PYS), while lowering PYS is detrimental to ride comfort and vehicle stability. This trade-off can be addressed by integrating hydraulic damping into primary suspension. However, work in this area only concentrated on comparing the effects of specific devices – the full potential of the hydraulic-damping-integrated primary suspension on combating the trade-off considering the whole parameter space is still unknown. Here we address this by making the following two contributions: (1) fully exploring the potential of hydraulic-damping-integrated primary suspension, on minimising the PYS while maintaining ride comfort; (2) systematically investigating the trade-off between the PYS reduction and suspension stroke requirement. Based on a case study using the Mark 4 Coach, this paper found that the optimal hydraulic-damping-integrated suspension can reduce PYS by 97% over the default without worsening comfort. This large reduction can potentially lead to a significant lifetime wheel-rail maintenance cost saving of approximately £42M for the fleet. If a larger suspension stroke is allowed, more cost saving can be achieved. These results provide motivation to conduct detailed engineering design studies to further examine the trade-off between financial benefits and design complexity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Groups of 5-year-olds, 10-year-olds, and adults completed either an episodic temporal generalization task, in which no stimuli were repeated, or a repeated standard temporal generalization task, in which there was a fixed standard that was repeated on every trial. Significant developmental improvements were found on both tasks. In both tasks, gradients of performance over two different stimulus ranges superimposed well when plotted on the same relative scale. Performance was similar for the adults and 10-year-olds across tasks, but the 5-year-olds performed better on the repeated standard task. These findings suggest that perceptual processes are a source of scalar variability in timing, and that there are developmental changes in levels of such variability.

Front-end module (FEM) readout and control are implemented as modular, high-density, reprogrammable functions in the PHENIX Multiplicity Vertex Detector. FEM control is performed by the heap manager, an FPGA-based circuit in the FEM unit. Each FEM has 256 channels of front-end electronics, readout, and control, all located on an MCM. Data readout, formatting, and control are performed by the heap manager along with 4 interface units that reside outside the MVD detector cylinder. This paper discusses the application of a generic heap manager and the addition of 4 interface module types to meet the specific control and data readout needs of the MVD. Unit functioning, interfaces, timing, data format, and communication rates will be discussed in detail. In addition, subsystem issues regarding mode control, serial architecture and functions, error handling, and FPGA implementation and programming will be presented.

A novel method for measuring dead time in nuclear pulse processing circuitry has been developed using the autocorrelation measurement capability of the Nuclear Weapons Inspection System (NWIS). Initially developed for active neutron interrogation of nuclear weapons and other fissile assemblies, NWIS employs a custom gallium arsenide application specific integrated circuit and a new signature analysis software package to simultaneously acquire and display the autocorrelation and cross-correlation spectra of up to five detector/electronics systems. The system operates at clock frequencies up to 1 GHz, permitting the collection of timing pulses in bins as narrow as 1 ns. In normal operation NWIS uses well characterized detectors and constant fraction discriminators, but it may also be configured to accept pulses from any circuit and to use the autocorrelation spectrum to accurately determine dead-time. Unlike traditional dead-time assessment techniques that typically require multiple sources and an assumed dead-time model, NWIS provides single-measurement assessment of circuit dead time and does not require an assumed dead-time model or a calibrated high count-rate source.

The system architecture and test results of the custom circuits and beam test system for the Multiplicity-Vertex Detector (MVD) for the PHENIX detector collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are presented in this paper. The final detector per-channel signal processing chain will consist of a preamplifier-gain stage, a current-mode summed multiplicity discriminator, a 64-deep analog memory (simultaneous read-write), a post-memory analog correlator, and a 10-bit 5 [[micro]seconds] ADC. The Heap Manager provides all timing control, data buffering, and data formatting for a single 256-channel multi-chip module (MCM). Each chip set is partitioned into 32-channel sets. Beam test (16-cell deep memory) performance for the various blocks will be presented as well as the ionizing radiation damage performance of the 1.2 [[micro]meter] n-well CMOS process used for preamplifier fabrication.
