- Abstract
Machine learning systems are infiltrating our lives and are beginning to become important in our education systems. This article, developed from a synthesis and analysis of previous research, examines the implications of recent developments in machine learning for human learners and learning. In this article we first compare deep learning in computers and humans to examine their similarities and differences. Deep learning is identified as a sub-set of machine learning, which is itself a component of artificial intelligence. Deep learning often depends on backwards propagation in weighted neural networks, so is non-deterministic--the system adapts and changes through practical experience or training. This adaptive behaviour predicates the need for explainability and accountability in such systems. Accountability is the reverse of explainability. Explainability flows through the system from inputs to output (decision) whereas accountability flows backwards, from a decision to the person taking responsibility for it. Both explainability and accountability should be incorporated in machine learning system design from the outset to meet social, ethical and legislative requirements. For students to be able to understand the nature of the systems that may be supporting their own learning as well as to act as responsible citizens in contemplating the ethical issues that machine learning raises, they need to understand key aspects of machine learning systems and have opportunities to adapt and create such systems. Therefore, some changes are needed to school curricula. The article concludes with recommendations about machine learning for teachers, students, policymakers, developers and researchers.

- Abstract
The proliferation of new technologies has changed the way we live, learn, and work. The vision of the future includes a new machine age, where various technologies (sensors, communication, computation, and intelligence) will be embedded around, on, and in us; where humans will shape technology and technology will shape human interaction; and where technologies and humans will collaborate to discover and innovate. Without question, the U.S. workforce will need a new set of skills and competencies to succeed in the future work environments on this Frontier--which feels like it grows closer with each new technological advance--and to move our society forward as a global leader in the 21st century. To ensure the workforce is future-ready, our society will need to address existing challenges related to education for workforce development, economics, equity, and ethics. As our society works to understand and identify strategies to overcome these complex and interrelated challenges, two theories--the Psychology of Working Theory (PWT) and Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) -- can help us understand and attend to the following key factors in cultivating a future-ready workforce: (1) The importance of work to society; (2) why work is critical to human identity; (3) how youth develop their work identities; and (4) why we should be concerned about making sure that there is decent work for everyone. Both the PWT and SCCT theories argue that because career development is an iterative process that begins early and is nurtured through both in- and out-of school experiences, we need to start supporting STEM workforce development long before youth reach the undergraduate level. Drawing upon these theories, this paper explores the potential to build on the National Science Foundation (NSF) Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) program's successful use of a "helix" approach, which blends career and content learning to help young people master the foundational skills they will need for work success at the Human-Technology Frontier. - Abstract
This article provides an introduction for the special issue of the "Journal of Science Education and Technology" focused on computational thinking (CT) from a disciplinary perspective. The special issue connects earlier research on what K-12 students can learn and be able to do using CT with the CT skills and habits of mind needed to productively participate in professional CT-integrated STEM fields. In this context, the phrase "disciplinary perspective" simultaneously holds two meanings: it refers to and aims to make connections between established K-12 STEM subject areas (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and newer CT-integrated disciplines such as computational sciences. The special issue presents a framework for CT integration and includes articles that illuminate what CT looks like from a disciplinary perspective, the challenges inherent in integrating CT into K-12 STEM education, and new ways of measuring CT aligned more closely with disciplinary practices. The aim of this special issue is to offer research-based and practitioner-grounded insights into recent work in CT integration and provoke new ways of thinking about CT integration from researchers, practitioners, and research-practitioner partnerships.

8. Computational Thinking Integration Patterns along the Framework Defining Computational Thinking from a Disciplinary Perspective
- Author

- Abstract
This paper describes analyses of the K-12 computational thinking (CT) integration activities collected at two NSF-funded workshops, "Developing an Interdisciplinary Framework for Integrating Computational Thinking in K-12 Science, Mathematics, Technology, and Engineering Education," held in August and November of 2017 at Education Development Center, Inc., in Waltham, Massachusetts. The workshops convened a working group of principal investigators, researchers, and educators from the National Science Foundation (NSF) ITEST (Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers) and STEM + C (STEM + Computing) funded projects to draft an interdisciplinary framework for integrating CT into K-12 education. The goal of this paper is to share that framework and our findings on promising learning progressions, gaps that exist in the collected set of activities, specific advances in STEM fields that were made possible through CT, and suggested ways that CT integration in K-12 can evolve to reach what the CT integration framework proposes as five "computational thinking integration elements" or "CTIEs". This framework is designed to help educators see ways to engage students in CT within disciplinary learning. The analyses and findings may benefit STEM and computing education fields by elucidating the target of CT as used within CT-integrated STEM fields.

- Abstract
With the increasing relevance of information and communication technologies (ICT) and the global transition towards the knowledge society, school systems and higher education now face increasing challenges involved in preparing students for successful participation in the knowledge society. In many countries, this is leading to manifold efforts and changes in national policies concerning ICT integration into education systems. This paper outlines four challenges concerning the design, implementation, and evaluation of national policy: (1) creating future ready policy, (2) achieving systemic perspectives in stakeholders, (3) promoting commitment to learning from policy, and (4) developing and implementing supportive processes. The paper shares an international perspective on these four major challenges and proposes strategy perspectives and solutions, as well as tactics that could be applied to advance a nation's educational system empowered by technology.

19. Workforce Education Models for K-12 STEM Education Programs: Reflections On, and Implications For, the NSF ITEST Program
- Author
-
Reider, David, Knestis, Kirk, and Malyn-Smith, Joyce
- Abstract
This article proposes a STEM workforce education logic model, tailored to the particular context of the National Science Foundation's Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) program. This model aims to help program designers and researchers address challenges particular to designing, implementing, and studying education innovations in the ITEST program, considering ongoing needs and challenges in STEM workforce education in the USA. It is grounded in conceptual frameworks developed previously by teams of ITEST constituents, for their part intended to frame STEM career education, consider how people select and prepare for STEM careers, and reinforce the important distinction between STEM content and STEM career learnings. The authors take a first step in what they hope will be an ongoing discussion and research agenda by test-fitting assumptions of the model to exploratory case studies of recent NSF ITEST projects. Brief implications for future research and other considerations are provided.

22. Arguing for Computer Science in the School Curriculum
- Author
-
Fluck, Andrew, Webb, Mary, Cox, Margaret, Angeli, Charoula, Malyn-Smith, Joyce, Voogt, Joke, and Zagami, Jason
- Abstract
Computer science has been a discipline for some years, and its position in the school curriculum has been contested differently in several countries. This paper looks at its role in three countries to illustrate these differences. A reconsideration of computer science as a separate subject both in primary and secondary education is suggested. At EDUsummIT 2015 it was argued that the major rationales for including computer science as a subject in the K-12 curriculum are economic, social and cultural. The paper explores these three rationales and also a beneficence matrix to assist curriculum designers. It also argues computer science is rapidly becoming critical for generating new knowledge, and should be taught as a distinct subject or content area, especially in secondary schools. - Abstract
This document is a practical manual to assist community-based organizations and coalitions in using voluntary industry skill standards in programs preparing people for success in the workplace and further education. The following are among the topics covered in the manual's six sections: (1) developing and maintaining systems (things partners can give to and get from the system, ways of organizing and managing systems to ensure their success); (2) planning and operating programs (preparing students for multiple future options, serving a variety of populations and needs, strengthening programs through work-based learning); (3) creating curriculum (structuring curricula to prepare students for workplace success, integrating skill standards); (4) creating instructional strategies (instructional strategies commonly used to prepare people for career success, support mastery of tasks and development of competencies, and support contextualized learning); (5) enhancing professional development (professional development approaches to prepare learners for success in the workplace and improve teachers' capacities); and (6) using assessment methods (standards-based assessment, assessment in real-life contexts). Appended are the following: list of the original pilot voluntary industry skills standards projects; resource directory of case studies and examples; list of additional relevant national organizations; bibliography which contains 58 related readings; and list of project advisory board members. 36. A Comparative Study of the Verbal Interaction and Concerns of Center Student Teachers with Non-Center Student Teachers.

Smith, Joyce M.
- Abstract
Two specific questions were addressed in the study: (1) Do student teachers from randomly selected in-center situations verbally interact with students differently than randomly-selected non-center student teachers? and (2) Do cente student teachers have concerns that are different from those of non-center student teachers? Data was gathered from the Teachers Concerns Checklist and the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire completed by both groups of student teachers. Non-center student teachers were placed in metropolitan school settings with no enrichment program input from the university. The teacher education center student teachers participated in a program consisting of: (1) content seminars on discipline, reinforcement strategies, and questioning techniques; (2) an orientation day to acquaint the student teacher with the center prior to the student teaching experience and to facilitate placement with the cooperating teacher; (3) analysis of their teaching through the use of audio and video tapes several times during the teaching experience; (4) individualized student teaching programs through the use of objectives that were summarized as a basis for their final evaluation; and (5) daily contact with the center coordinator while at work for supervision and counsel. A final consideration in placing this research in perspective is the lack of a well-developed program at the teacher education center used for this research. Results indicate that in order to make a significant difference, a teacher education program needs to provide experiences that will result in behavioral changes. (MM)

38. Subtest Estimates of the WISC Full Scale IQ's for Children.

- Abstract
An intensive analysis of the relative value of using the Vocabulary and Block Design subtests of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) to predict Full Scale IQ based on six verbal and five performance WISC subtests was conducted. The tests were administered to 1,310 6 to 11 year old Anglo, Negro, and Mexican-American school children. Separate analyses were performed by sex, age, and socioeconomic level for each of the ethnic groups. The findings support the results from other studies, that is, that Mexican-American children do relatively better on the performance than on the verbal tests. It is noted that the size of the standard error of estimated Full Scale IQ for the Vocabulary and Block Design subtests could lead to misclassifications of individuals in predicting IQ scores of less than 85, 80, and 70 for diagnostic purposes. However, it is suggested that both scores could be used to provide estimated IQ scores for groups of individuals. It is concluded that no other combination of two WISC subtests would have produced better overall predictions for all three ethnic groups. The sum of the scaled scores for the Vocabulary and Block Design subtests correlated .880 with Full Scale IQ. (Author)
