Due to the unique colonial history of Alaska, Alaska Native peoples find themselves operating and engaging in a set of conditions that diverge from many experiences of Native peoples in the contiguous U.S. This paper explores some of those differences by tracking how questions of land and concerns about race were made together in Alaska from 1867-1899. I argue that the discursive formations of land definitions and the racialization of Alaska Native peoples as “of Asian descent” are mutually constitutive in ways that draw from prior configurations of racialization via geography. I do so by looking at racialized federal policy, geographical and geological surveys of land, and photographs of landscape as curated by Edward Curtis on the Harriman Alaska Expedition of 1899. Drawing from these materials, I argue that land and race in Alaska are co-constituted through law, geography, and popular culture and that the accumulation of these colonial impositions continues to inform the current political status of Alaska Native peoples and the ongoing dispossession of land.

The study of marginalia has not been widely discussed in social sciences research and occupies a marginal space in terms of methodological legitimacy. We highlight the value of paying attention to the ways in which participants "speak back" to the researcher. This paper draws on marginalia found in surveys written or drawn by young people in classrooms across South Wales, demonstrating how various notes and marks made spontaneously by participants can tell us something important and worthwhile about how young people engage with research. We position marginalia as a manifestation of complex power dynamics in the research process that illuminate participants' negotiation of complex and multiple subjectivities in the literal margins and between the lines of the survey pages. Whilst the sensitive and rigorous analysis of marginalia is fraught with ethical and methodological challenges, we argue that paying closer attention to marginalia presents an opportunity for deeper engagement with participants when undertaking survey research.

Children entering secure accommodation, also known as 'secure care', are prevented from exercising free choice over most aspects of everyday life. This paper focuses on the relationship between agency and violence during transference to and early time in secure accommodation. Sharing interview extracts from 11 young people with experience of secure care as children, we explore how the routine processes of 'suppressing' children's agency supports the emergence of violence. We argue that the manner of transfer to secure accommodation creates a violent encounter that forces children's emotion and agency to redirect and intensify onto the self and others as further violence. Summary: Unpaid carers were profoundly impacted by the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic and public health responses. In the UK, in March 2020, people identified as clinically extremely vulnerable and their household members were advised to "shield" for an initial 12-week period, which meant minimizing all contacts from outside the household and not leaving the house at all, unless in an emergency. In a modified form, shielding guidance remained in place until August 2020 and was reinstituted from December 2020 until April 1, 2021. This article, reporting on qualitative interviews with 47 unpaid carers in Wales, thematically analyzed using a coding framework, explores the experiences of unpaid carers affected by this shielding guidance and their wider implications for social work with unpaid carers in the future. Findings: Participants in our study described ways in which their caring role expanded, due to the need to provide additional practical and emotional support for loved ones who were shielding, and who lost access to other avenues of support. Some also described their caring role as becoming more involved and complex due to the declining health or self-care capacity of the person cared-for as a direct consequence of shielding restrictions. Alongside the increase in their caring responsibilities, carers reported losing access to important avenues of support for their own well-being. Applications: We draw on ecological systems theory to highlight the importance during care planning and management of exploring the carer's mesosystem to identify and optimize sustaining forces, and of attending to the microsystem involving the carer and person cared-for. Over centuries, Western desires of Arctic space have consistently worked to render icy locales of the North legible to an audience further south. In non‐Indigenous reportage, the Arctic has been framed through a dominating lens that narrates it as a 'natural region' or cryosphere where elemental qualities such as cold, ice, snow and darkness reign supreme. The cryosphere is often overwhelmingly dissected and demarcated not by Indigenous historical and ongoing claims to space, but instead through the documented presence of particular biota as they correlate to lines of latitude and/or cold temporalities (e.g., 'frozen for most of the year'). New descriptors such as 'Atlantification' are the latest in a line of tropes and descriptors being used to account and audit an Arctic that is said to be undergoing fundamental 'declinist' state‐change. Judged to be no longer satisfactorily described as a circumpolar region, rigidly defined by coldness north of the Arctic Circle, the Arctic's physical and environmental qualities are now being cultivated as a 'new Arctic'. Ice and cold are fundamental to the everyday working and spiritual lives of northern communities. We argue that there are timely opportunities for ice humanities scholars to be mindful of enduring inhumanities in the sense of erasing/dispossessing those who inhabit worlds where there are co‐relationalities with ice, multi‐species relationships, and multiple spatialities, seasonalities and temporalities that do not pivot around Euro‐American/global framings of time and space, geopolitical worlding and extractive capitalism.
