Abstract

The barrel calorimeter is part of the new spectrometer installed in Hall D at Jefferson Lab for the GlueX experiment. The calorimeter was installed in 2013, commissioned in 2014 and has been operating routinely since early 2015. The detector configuration, associated Monte Carlo simulations, calibration and operational performance are described herein. The calorimeter records the time and energy deposited by charged and neutral particles created by a multi-GeV photon beam. It is constructed as a lead and scintillating-fiber calorimeter and read out with 3840 large-area silicon photomultiplier arrays. Particles impinge on the detector over a wide range of angles, from normal incidence at 90 degrees down to 11.5 degrees, which defines a geometry that is fairly unique among calorimeters. The response of the calorimeter has been measured during a running experiment and performs as expected for electromagnetic showers below 2.5 GeV. We characterize the performance of the BCAL using the energy resolution integrated over typical angular distributions for $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ production of $\sigma_E/E$=5.2\%/$\sqrt{E(\rm{GeV})} \oplus$ 3.6\% and a timing resolution of $\sigma$\,=\,150\,ps at 1\,GeV., Comment: 46 pages, 33 figures

Abstract

The performance of the GlueX Forward Calorimeter was studied using a small version of the detector and a variable energy electron beam derived from the Hall B tagger at Jefferson Lab. For electron energies from 110 MeV to 260 MeV, which are near the lower-limits of the design sensitivity, the fractional energy resolution was measured to range from 20% to 14%, which meets the design goals. The use of custom 250 MHz flash ADCs for readout allowed precise measurements of signal arrival times. The detector achieved timing resolutions of 0.38 ns for a single 100 mV pulse, which will allow timing discrimination of photon beam bunches and out-of-time background during the operation of the GlueX detector., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures, submitted to NIMA

Abstract

We report on the measurement of the neutron radiation hardness of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) manufactured by Hamamatsu Corporation in Japan and SensL in Ireland. Samples from both companies were irradiated by neutrons created by a 1 GeV electron beam hitting a thin lead target at Jefferson Lab Hall A. More tests regarding the temperature dependence of the neutron radiation damage and self-annealing were performed on Hamamatsu SiPMs using a calibrated Am-Be neutron source from the Jefferson Lab Radiation Control group. As the result of irradiation both dark current and dark rate increase linearly as a function of the 1 MeV equivalent neutron fluence and a temperature dependent self-annealing effect is observed., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:physics/0211118

Abstract

We report the first extraction of the pion-nucleon multipoles near the production threshold for the $n\pi^+$ channel at relatively high momentum transfer ($Q^2$ up to 4.2 $\rm{GeV^2}$). The dominance of the s-wave transverse multipole ($E_{0+}$), expected in this region, allowed us to access the generalized form factor $G_1$ within the light-cone sum rule (LCSR) framework as well as the axial form factor $G_A$. The data analyzed in this work were collected by the nearly $4\pi$ CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) using a 5.754 $\rm{GeV}$ electron beam on a proton target. The differential cross section and the $\pi-N$-multipole $E_{0+}/G_D$ were measured using two different methods, the LCSR and a direct multipole fit. The upgrade of the CEBAF Accelerator at Jefferson Lab to 12 GeV will deliver high luminosity and high quality beams, which will open unique opportunities for studies of the quark and gluon structure of hadrons in the valence region. Abstract

High quality polarized electron beams at Jefferson Lab make possible precision measurements of hadronic properties in the regime of strongly interacting QCD. We will describe a few programs at Jefferson Lab that are making measurements that link the basic static properties of hadrons to their quark sub-structure. For example, parity-violating electron proton elastic scattering probes the spatial distribution of strange quarks in the nucleon. The nucleon-Delta transition form factors give us information about the deformation of nucleons and Deltas. Finally, new high statistics measurements of photons scattering off proton and deuteron targets are used to set upper limits on the production of exotic baryons with strangeness S=+1. 14. JLab: Probing Hadronic Physics with Electrons and Photons

Abstract

Precision measurements of the structure of nucleons and nuclei in the regime of strong interaction QCD are now possible with the availability of high current polarized electron beams, polarized targets, and recoil polarimeters, in conjunction with modern spectrometers and detector instrumentation. The physics at JLab will be highlighted using two recent measurements of general interest. The ratio of the proton electric to magnetic form factors indicates the importance of the role of angular momentum in the structure of the nucleon. The existence of 5-quark configurations in the ground state wavefunctions of hadrons is confirmed by a narrow peak attributed to an exotic baryon with strangeness S=+1. Abstract

Generalized parton distributions provide a unifying framework for the interpretation of exclusive reactions at high $Q^2$. The most promising reaction for the investigation of these distributions is the hard production of photons using Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS). This reaction can be accessed experimentally by determining the production asymmetry using polarized electrons on a proton target. Pioneering experiments with CLAS and HERMES have produced the first measurements of this asymmetry. We will review the current experimental program to study DVCS at Jefferson Lab. Abstract

Background: Ki‐67 is an index of proliferative activity and is an established predictive and prognostic marker in multiple malignancies. However, its prognostic relevance in multiple myeloma (MM) is unclear. We investigated the relationship between Ki‐67 expression and survival outcomes in MM in the era of novel therapies. Methods: We interrogated our database to identify patients with MM, newly diagnosed between July 1, 2013 and December 31, 2020, with Ki‐67 expression assessed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) on bone marrow biopsies. Using an established threshold of 5% we defined Ki‐67low (≤5%) and Ki‐67high (>5%) subgroups for association with progression‐free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Results: Of 167 patients included: 53 (31.7%) had Ki‐67high and 114 had Ki‐67low. More patients with R‐ISS 3 had Ki‐67high (22.2% vs. 9.7%). The gain of 1q21 was overrepresented in the Ki‐67high group (28% vs. 8%). Median PFS in the Ki‐67low group was 3.1 years, and in the Ki‐67high group 1.6 years (log‐rank p <.001, HR: 1.9). Median OS was not reached in the Ki‐67low vs. 4.8 years in the Ki‐67high cohort (HR: 1.9; log‐rank test: p =.018). In the multivariable modeling, after adjusting for other risk factors, HR for Ki‐67high versus Ki‐67low was 2.4 (p <.001) for PFS and 2.1 (p =.026) for OS. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that a high Ki‐67 index (>5%) is an independent prognostic marker associated with worse OS and PFS in newly diagnosed MM. IHC staining for Ki‐67 on bone marrow biopsies could be easily adopted as a prognostic biomarker for MM in economically constrained healthcare settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Primary cutaneous diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, leg type (PCDLBCL-LT) is an exceedingly rare extra-nodal variant of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) with an aggressive natural history that often manifests as red cutaneous tumour lesions on the lower extremities. Additionally, with the chemoresistant nature of PCDLBCL-LT and the relatively poor prognosis, many patients experience disease relapse and thus, novel treatment paradigms are needed for salvage therapy. PET/CT 13 months after starting therapy shows continued CR, and the patient remains in remission clinically at 20 months. After four cycles of therapy, an interim PET/CT scan demonstrated a CR with no hypermetabolic uptake to indicate active, recurrent, or metastatic disease. [Extracted from the article]

24. GlueX: Photoproduction of Hybrid Mesons

Abstract

The goal of the GlueX experiment [1] is to provide critical data to help understand the soft gluonic field responsible for binding quarks in hadrons. Hybrid mesons, and in particular exotic hybrid mesons, provide the ideal laboratory for testing QCD in the confinement regime since these mesons explicitly manifest the gluonic degrees of freedom. Photoproduction is expected to be particularly effective in producing exotic hybrids but there is little data on the photoproduction of light mesons. GlueX will use the new 12-GeV electron beam to produce a 9-GeV beam of linearly polarized photons using the technique of coherent bremsstrahlung. A solenoid-based hermetic detector is under construction, which will be used to collect data on meson production and decays. These data will also be used to study the spectrum of conventional mesons, including the poorly understood excited vector mesons. This talk will describe the latest theoretical developments [2] to help understand how the data of hybrid mesons can provide insights into the fundamental theory of strong interactions.

Abstract

5 pages, 6 figures; The beam spin asymmetry (BSA) in the exclusive reaction ep->ep pi0 was measured with the CEBAF 5.77 GeV polarized electron beam and Large Acceptance Spectrometer(CLAS). The xB, Q2, t and phi dependences of the pi0 BSA are presented in the deep inelastic regime. The asymmetries are fitted with a sin(phi) function and their amplitudes are extracted. Overall, they are of the order of 0.04 - 0.11 and roughly independent of t. This is the signature of a non-zero longitudinal-transverse interference. The implications concerning the applicability of a formalism based on generalized parton distributions, as well as the extension of a Regge formalism at high photon virtualities, are discussed.

39. Development of Silicon Photomultipliers and their Applications to GlueX Calorimetry.

Abstract

The GlueX experiment is a photoproduction experiment in Hall D at Jefferson Lab that is being commissioned for use with the new 12 GeV accelerator. The purpose of the experiment is to search for Hybrid mesons, which are mesons with quark and gluon degrees of freedom. The barrel calorimeter of GlueX is instrumented with 4000 large-area (1.2 × 1.2 cm2) silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). These photon sensors have properties similar to vacuum photomultipliers, but are unaffected by high magnetic fields. In our experiment they operate in magnetic fields exceeding 1T. After extensive tests with a variety of sensors, we chose the S12045(X) custom SiPM arrays manufactured by Hamamatsu Corporation, also known as multi-pixel photon counters (MPPCs). We will give an overview of this new technology as well as the experience gained during two commissioning periods with beam. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Understanding the structure of baryons in terms of the fundamental interaction of the constituent quarks and gluons is one of the challenges in strong interaction physics. This interaction is governed by Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). However, solutions of this theory in the non-perturbative domain of the interaction are extremely difficult to achieve. In inelastic electron scattering, very little is known about exclusive hadron production purely contributed to a lack of knowledge. The γN interaction is recognized for being a powerful method for investigating hadrons and the mysteries that still exist within the strong interaction. From reactions with the nucleon, the strong interaction can be tested through the amplitudes of the N and Δ resonances. More specifically, if an electromagnetic interaction is well known then the intermediate resonance states may be evaluated through pion photoproduction. To gain more detailed insight into this interaction, we look to probe the baryon structure of Δ and the meson structure of the pion through photon scattering off a deuteron producing two pions in the final state. The photoproduction processes on the deuteron will be used to investigate known baryon resonances in the proton-pion channel. The two pion final state will be investigated for unraveling new information in to the rho decay at threshold. We want to explore both final states interactions to search for “missing” states that are predicted by quark models but have not yet been found experimentally. Using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS), the hadronic products are detected in coincidence with the scattered photon. This makes it possible to measure the differential cross section and the decay angular distribution for the production of two and three pion final states. The measured cross sections will contribute significantly and push the knowledge of the strong interaction to the next level. We propose to use the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) to study the two pion channel from the EG3 data set, for Δ++ (1232) production. We look to investigate the exclusive reaction of γd→pπ+π-(n), extracting the relevant cross sections to comparable data sets. This reaction is produced using a high intensity photon beam incident on a deuterium target. These measurements provide unique and coherent results from tagged photons over a broad range of energy, and represent the only pion production data above 5 GeV at this present time.
