The bifurcated inlet examined in this study (which is one of several being considered in the High Speed Research (HSR) Program) was chosen based upon paper trade studies of axisymmetric, single sided, and bifurcated inlets. For a given compression ratio and mass flow a bifurcated inlet weighs less than a single sided inlet. An axisymmetric inlet has less bleed requirements than 2D inlets but has trouble matching transonic airflow requirements without going to a variable diameter centerbody. The bifurcated inlet was selected as one of the candidates because of its ability to match airflow schedules. The inlet examined in this study, the Two Stage Supersonic Inlet (TSSI), was a candidate mixed compression bifurcated inlet. It has a novel concept to aid in inlet stability. This concept was tested in the 10x10 wind tunnel at NASA Glenn. CFD tools were used to predict and interpret the experimental results.

Full 3D Navier-Stokes computational results are presented for compressible flows within nondiffusing and diffusing S-ducts. The present study provides an understanding of the performance characteristics of typical S-ducts with attached and separated flows and provides a frame of reference for future computational fluid dynamic studies of internal flows with strong secondary flows. The predicted results, which were obtained using both H- and O-grids, are compared with the experimental wall pressures, static and total pressure fields, and velocity vectors. In addition, computed boundary-layer thickness, velocity profiles in wall coordinates and skin friction values are presented. The inviscid contributions to the secondary flows are quantified. The S-duct entrance Mach number was 0.6, and the Reynolds number was 1.76 x 10 exp 6 based on the upstream duct diameter.

The flow inside a model exhaust configuration was studied using both experimental and computational techniques. The hardware was tested at the NASA Lewis Research Center's Powered Lift Facility at tailpipe total pressure to ambient static pressure ratios ranging from 1.0 to 5.0. The flow simulations were obtained using the two 3-D Navier-Stokes CFD codes run on the Lewis Cray Y-MP computer. Both codes produced oscillatory solutions due to the inflow boundary condition reflecting acoustic waves. The CFD solutions correctly predicted the flow separation along the inside elbow of the takeoff and also along the walls of the ventral duct. Mass flow rates were overpredicted due to underprediction of the turbulent energy dissipation and subsequent total pressure loss.

Major objectives of the NASA High-Alpha Technology Program are the accurate prediction of the internal (inlet) aerodynamics of an aircraft operating at attitudes of up to 60 deg pitch and 10 deg yaw and the calibration of CFD codes for predicting the internal performance of inlets. Numerical results are presented for the three cases of a full-scale model, a 20-percent scale model at design mass flow, and a scale model at reduced mass flow; attention is given to the effects of Reynolds number. All three cases are at 30 deg angle of attack and zero deg yaw. The results thus obtained are helpful to experimentalists in determining some of their instrumentation requirements.

The PARC3D code was used to compute the compressible turbulent flow within a three dimensional, nondiffusing S-duct. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the capability of the computational fluid dynamics computer program PARC3D to model flow in a typical diffusing subsonic S-duct, with strong secondary flows. This evaluation is needed to provide confidence in the analysis of aircraft inlets, which have similar geometries. The performance predictions include total pressure profiles, static pressures, velocity profiles, boundary layer data, and skin friction data. Flow in the S-duct is subsonic, and the boundary layers are assumed to be turbulent. The results for both H and O grid solutions, are compared with existing test data.

Flow in a generic ventral nozzle system was studied experimentally and analytically with a block version of the PARC3D computational fluid dynamics program (a full Navier-Stokes equation solver) in order to evaluate the program's ability to predict system performance and internal flow patterns. Measurements showed about 5.5-percent flow-turning loss, reasonable nozzle performance coefficients, and a significant aftward axial component of thrust due to flow turning more than 90 deg. Flow behavior into and through the ventral duct is discussed and illustrated with paint streak flow visualization photographs. PARC3D flow visualization images are shown for comparison with the paint streak photographs. Modeling and computational issues encountered in the analytical work are discussed.
