Abstract

Background: This study examines the effect of a Theory of Mind (ToM) intervention on ToM abilities and social–emotional functioning in adolescents with developmental language disorder (DLD) or who are deaf/hard of hearing (D/HH). It emphasizes the importance of self‐reflection and measurement for personal growth. The research design incorporates both subjective and objective measures to evaluate the intervention's efficacy. Aims: To investigate the impact of the ToM intervention on ToM abilities and social–emotional functioning in adolescents with DLD or who are D/HH. It hypothesizes that participants in the intervention groups will show improved ToM and social–emotional functioning compared with those in the control groups. Methods & Procedures: Adolescents with DLD or who are D/HH were recruited through collaboration with educational institutions. The study utilized a pre‐/post‐test design, assigning participants to either the intervention or the control group. The ToM intervention involved targeted activities to enhance ToM abilities. ToM abilities and social–emotional functioning were assessed using standardized tests and self‐report questionnaires. Statistical analyses compared outcomes between the intervention and no intervention groups. Outcomes & Results: The findings reveal subjective improvements in social–emotional functioning among the D/HH intervention group. However, no significant effects on objective ToM measures were observed. These results highlight the need for further investigation and refinement of interventions in these areas. Future research should focus on improving intervention strategies and exploring additional objective measures to gain a comprehensive understanding of the intervention's impact on ToM and social–emotional functioning in this population. Conclusions & Implications: The ToM intervention shows subjective benefits in improving social–emotional functioning among D/HH adolescents. However, it does not yield significant effects on objective ToM measures. These findings emphasize the ongoing need to refine interventions targeting ToM abilities and social–emotional functioning in this population. Future studies should explore alternative strategies and incorporate additional objective measures to enhance understanding and outcomes. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on this subject: Before this study, it was known that ToM interventions have the potential to enhance ToM abilities. However, the specific effects of such interventions on subjective and objective measures for ToM and social–emotional functioning in adolescents with DLD or who are D/HH remained unclear, necessitating further research. What this paper adds to the existing knowledge: This study adds to the existing knowledge by demonstrating subjective improvements in social–emotional functioning among adolescents who are D/HH and underwent a ToM intervention. However, no significant effects on objective ToM measures were observed. These findings highlight the need for refining interventions and exploring additional measures to better understand the intervention's impact. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work?: The subjective improvements in social–emotional functioning observed in this study have important clinical implications. 9. Clinical presentation and outcome of acute respiratory illnesses in South African children during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

Introduction: It is unknown if African children with acute respiratory tract infections (ARIs) caused by SARS-CoV-2 have higher morbidity and mortality. We investigated the presentation and outcomes of ARIs in children with real-time polymerase chain reaction (rt-PCR) confirmed SARS-CoV-2 compared with those who had a negative SARS-CoV-2 rt-PCR. Methods: Cross-sectional study of children aged 0-13 years old admitted with an ARI from May 5, 2020, to December 5, 2020, at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. We collected data on clinical presentation, disease severity and outcomes and included results of routinely collected respiratory virus testing if performed. Chest radiographs (CXR) were reviewed by 2 blinded external experts. Upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) was defined as respiratory symptoms without tachypnoea/respiratory distress. Lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) was defined as respiratory symptoms with tachypnea and/or respiratory distress. Results: 176 children were included; 38 (21.6%) SARSCoV-2 rt-PCR positive (Table 1). LRTI was diagnosed in 31 (80%) of SARS-CoV-2 positive children and 102 (74%) of negative children (p=0.43). There were no SARS-CoV-2 related deaths. In multivariable analyses SARS-CoV-2 positive children: were more likely to be female (OR 2.68, 95% CI 1.18 – 6.07) had lower WAZ scores (OR 0.77, 95% CI 0.63- 0.93) The VERDI project (101045989) is funded by the European Union were more likely to have fever (OR 3.56, 95% CI 1.54-8.24) but less likely to have cough (OR 0.27, 95% CI 0.11-0.66) were not more likely to have a comorbid condition were not more likely to need respiratory support, but if required this was needed for longer time period (OR 1.1, 95% CI 1.01 – 1.20) Conclusion: This study provides further evidence of severe COVID-19 infection among young South African children, with high morbidity and health resource implications.

Abstract

Background Nivolumab (NIVO) alone or with ipilimumab (COMBO) immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) prior to curative surgery has shown promising results in multiple tumor types. We completed a phase Ib/II study with neoadjuvant NIVO or COMBO in resectable head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and show safety, efficacy and correlative biomarker results. Methods 32 stage II-IVB HNSCC patients indicated for curative (salvage) surgery were treated with NIVO (240mg, weeks 1&3, N=6) or NIVO (240mg, weeks 1&3) + IPI (1mg/kg, week 1, N=26) prior to surgery in week 5. Imaging was performed at baseline and week 4. AEs were reported in terms of CTCAE. Pathological response (pR) was defined as % change in viable tumor cells from baseline to on-treatment; ≥90% pR was considered (near-) complete response (pCR). WES and RNAseq were performed on paired tumor biopsies. Results 32 (31 HPV-negative) patients started treatment (stage II n=3, III n=8, IVA-B n=11, recurrent disease n=10). 6 patients included with recurrent disease had had previous (C)RT. 1 patient discontinued ICB after one course due to patient’s preference. Surgery was not postponed in any patient. 3/32 patients did not undergo surgery: 1 due to unresectable PD and 2 due to reasons unrelated to ICB or disease. Grade 3-4 irAEs in 11/32 patients were well manageable. (Near-)pCR in the primary tumor was seen in 9/29 evaluable patients (31%). Another 31% of patients had 20-89% pR.
