This article reports the first observation of the Moon and the Sun shadows in the sky distribution of cosmic-ray induced muons measured by the KM3NeT/ORCA detector. The analysed data-taking period spans from February 2020 to November 2021, when the detector had 6 Detection Units deployed at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, each composed of 18 Digital Optical Modules. The shadows induced by the Moon and the Sun were detected with a statistical significance of 4.2{\sigma} and 6.2{\sigma}, respectively, at their nominal position. This early result confirms the effectiveness of the detector calibration, in time, position and orientation and the accuracy of the event direction reconstruction. This also demonstrates the performance and the competitiveness of the detector in terms of pointing accuracy and angular resolution., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

The direct detection of dark matter constituents, in particular the weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), is central to particle physics and cosmology. In this paper we study WIMP induced transitions from isomeric nuclear states for two possible isomeric candidates: Ta 180 and Ho 166. The experimental setup, which can measure the possible decay of Ta 180 induced by WIMPs, was proposed. The corresponding estimates of the half-life of Ta 180 are given in the sense that the WIMP-nucleon interaction can be interpreted as ordinary radioactive decay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This work extends the idea of using a cyclotron-based antineutrino source for purposes of neutrino physics. Long baseline experiments suffer from degeneracies and correlations between , and the mass hierarchy. However, the combination of a superconducting cyclotron and a big liquid scintillator detector like JUNO in a medium baseline experiment, which does not depend on the mass hierarchy, may allow to determine whether the position of the mixing angle is in the lower octant or the upper octant. Such an experiment would improve the precision of the measurement to a degree which depends on the CP-phase.

The emfof cells Th|NThXn+ (1 − N)MX|MX||C, X2(g)and Th|NThXn+ (1 − N)[NYMY+ (1 − NY)MX]|MX|C, X2(g)in which Xis Cl, Br or I, Yis F, Cl or Br and Mis Li, Na, K, Cs or Na + K is measured as a function of temperature and mole fraction of ThXn(N) and MY(NY). From experimental observations MZThXn+Zdecomposition potentials and ThX4and ThCl2activity coefficients are calculated in the melts of XThX4+ (1 − X)ThX2+ MX(Xis a share of tetravalent thorium in equilibrium with metallic thorium in molten alkali halides). Expressions are obtained for their temperature dependences MZThCl2+Zand especially MZThCl4 + Zdecomposition potentials increase and ThClnand ThCl2activity coefficients decrease as the ionic potential of cations diminish in the series of alkali chlorides from LiCl to CsCl. Numbers Zof addends are evaluated. Complexing reactions of addition are shown to take place in melts containing thorium and two different kinds of halide anions. Addend numbers Zand conditional stability constants are found for complex compounds MZThXnYZformed by tetra (n= 4)- and divalent (n= 2) thorium. Equations are derived for their temperature dependence. The addend number reduces as temperature is raised. The complex thorium halide compound stability decreases as thorium valency, electronic polarizability of anions X−more ionic potential of anions Y−drop in the series of ThI4FZ−Z, ThBr4FZ−Z, ThCl4FZ−Z, ThI4ClZ−Z, ThI4BrZ−Z, ThBr4ClZ−Z, ThI2ClZ−Z, ThBr2ClZ−Z, ThI2BrZ−Z.

31. Thorium valency in molten alkali halides in equilibrium with metallic thorium

- Abstract
Metallic thorium is shown to corrode in molten alkali halides even in the absence of external oxidizing agents, alkali cations acting as oxidizing agents. Its corrosion rate grows in the series of alkali chlorides from LiCl to CsCl at constant temperature. Substituting halide anions for one another exerts a smaller influence, the rate rising slightly in going from chlorides to bromides and iodides, having the same alkali cations. Thorium valency is determined coulometrically, the metal being dissolved anodically in molten alkali halides and their mixtures. In fluoride melts it is equal to 4 but in chloride, bromide and iodide ones, as a rule, it has non-integral values between 4 and 2 which diminish as the temperature is raised, as the thorium concentration is lowered, as the radii of alkali cations decrease and those of halide anions increase. The emfof cells Th|N ThHln+ (1 − N) MHl|Mhl}C, Hl2(g)where Hlis Cl, Br or I, Mis Li, Na, K, Cs or Na + K, and N< 0.05, is measured as a function of concentration at several temperatures. Expressions are obtained for its concentration dependence. The emfgrows in the series of alkali chlorides from LiCl to CsCl, other conditions being equal. A method is suggested for finding predominant pairs of ThHl4, ThHl3and ThHl2in chloride, bromide and iodide metals that are in equilibrium with metallic thorium. From experimental data, ThHl4and ThHl2are ascertained to prevail over ThHl3. Equations are derived for temperature dependence of conditional equilibrium constants for disproportionation reactions of ThCl2in LiCl, NaCl, NaCl + KCl and CsCl, ThBr2in NaBr + KBr, and ThI2in NaI + KI.
