Abstract

We present the star cluster catalogs for 17 dwarf and irregular galaxies in the $HST$ Treasury Program "Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey" (LEGUS). Cluster identification and photometry in this subsample are similar to that of the entire LEGUS sample, but special methods were developed to provide robust catalogs with accurate fluxes due to low cluster statistics. The colors and ages are largely consistent for two widely used aperture corrections, but a significant fraction of the clusters are more compact than the average training cluster. However, the ensemble luminosity, mass, and age distributions are consistent suggesting that the systematics between the two methods are less than the random errors. When compared with the clusters from previous dwarf galaxy samples, we find that the LEGUS catalogs are more complete and provide more accurate total fluxes. Combining all clusters into a composite dwarf galaxy, we find that the luminosity and mass functions can be described by a power law with the canonical index of $-2$ independent of age and global SFR binning. The age distribution declines as a power law, with an index of $\approx-0.80\pm0.15$, independent of cluster mass and global SFR binning. This decline of clusters is dominated by cluster disruption since the combined star formation histories and integrated-light SFRs are both approximately constant over the last few hundred Myr. Finally, we find little evidence for an upper-mass cutoff ($<2\sigma$) in the composite cluster mass function, and can rule out a truncation mass below $\approx10^{4.5}$M$_{\odot}$ but cannot rule out the existence of a truncation at higher masses., Comment: 25 pages; 28 figures (Accepted to MNRAS)

3. Family history of cancer in relation to the risk of keratinocyte carcinoma plus another type of cancer: a case-control study

Abstract

BackgroundA personal history of keratinocyte carcinoma (KC) is associated with increased risk for other malignancies. To assess the role of inherited cancer predisposition we investigated if family history (FH) of skin cancer plus noncutaneous malignancy is associated with the risk of KC plus another type of cancer.MethodsThis clinic-based case-control study of non-Hispanic Caucasians had three age- and gender-matched groups: KC plus another cancer (n=49), KC only (n=50), and cancer-free controls (n=50). Patients were interviewed to assess FH in first-degree relatives of “skin cancer” and “cancer other than skin cancer.” Controls were the referent category for the risk of 1) KC only and 2) KC plus another cancer.ResultsWhen FH was categorized into a four-level variable and evaluated across the 3 study groups, compared to the control group a FH of skin plus noncutaneous malignancy was strongly associated with risk of KC only (OR 9.9; 95% CI 1.7-59.7) and KC plus another cancer (OR 9.8; 95% CI 1.7-57.0). The ORs for FH of skin cancer only were weaker and non-significant for both KC only (OR 4.3) and KC plus another cancer (OR 6.8). FH of noncutaneous malignancy only was null across groups.ConclusionsThe overall pattern of associations, especially the similar associations in patients with KC only and with KC plus another cancer, reinforce the known association between a family and personal history of KC but do not support a link between FH of skin plus noncutaneous malignancy and the KC cancer-prone phenotype.

Abstract

Weak electric fields guide cell migration, known as galvanotaxis/electrotaxis. The sensor(s) cells use to detect the fields remain elusive. Here we perform a large-scale screen using an RNAi library targeting ion transporters in human cells. We identify 18 genes that show either defective or increased galvanotaxis after knockdown. Knockdown of the KCNJ15 gene (encoding inwardly rectifying K(+) channel Kir4.2) specifically abolishes galvanotaxis, without affecting basal motility and directional migration in a monolayer scratch assay. Depletion of cytoplasmic polyamines, highly positively charged small molecules that regulate Kir4.2 function, completely inhibits galvanotaxis, whereas increase of intracellular polyamines enhances galvanotaxis in a Kir4.2-dependent manner. Expression of a polyamine-binding defective mutant of KCNJ15 significantly decreases galvanotaxis. Knockdown or inhibition of KCNJ15 prevents phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-triphosphate (PIP3) from distributing to the leading edge. Taken together these data suggest a previously unknown two-molecule sensing mechanism in which KCNJ15/Kir4.2 couples with polyamines in sensing weak electric fields.

Abstract

The quantum Hall (QH) effect in two-dimensional (2D) electrons and holes in high quality graphene samples is studied in strong magnetic fields up to 45 T. QH plateaus at filling factors $\nu=0,\pm 1,\pm 4$ are discovered at magnetic fields $B>$20 T, indicating the lifting of the four-fold degeneracy of the previously observed QH states at $\nu=\pm(|n|+1/2)$, where $n$ is the Landau level index. In particular, the presence of the $\nu=0, \pm 1$ QH plateaus indicates that the Landau level at the charge neutral Dirac point splits into four sublevels, lifting sublattice and spin degeneracy. The QH effect at $\nu=\pm 4$ is investigated in tilted magnetic field and can be attributed to lifting of the spin-degeneracy of the $n=1$ Landau level., Comment: 11 pages including 4 figures, to appear in PRL

Abstract

This paper presents octave-tunable resonators and filters with surface mounted lumped tuning elements. Detailed theoretical analysis and modeling in terms of tuning range and unloaded quality factor Qu are presented in agreement with simulated and measured results. Based on the models, a systematic design method to maximize tuning ratio and optimize Qu of the resonator is suggested. A resonator tuning from 0.5 to 1.1 GHz with Qu ranging from 90 to 214 is demonstrated using solid-state varactors. A two-pole filter with a tuning range of 0.5-1.1 GHz with a constant 3-dB fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 4 ± 0.1% and insertion loss of 1.67 dB at 1.1 GHz is demonstrated along with a three-pole filter with a tuning range of 0.58-1.22 GHz with a constant 3-dB FBW of 4 ± 0.2% and insertion loss of 2.05 dB at 1.22 GHz. The measured input third-order intermodulation is better than 17 dBm over the frequency range for the two-pole filter. © 2013 IEEE.

Abstract

Tension between individual and communal interests is endemic in neoliberal universities. As a group of 10 academics from a Business School in an Australian University, we employed the collective research method of memory-work to investigate how collegiality is experienced and learnt by academics. Although collegiality is employed to enable productivity and efficiency in the neoliberal university, our diverse yet intersecting experiences of collegiality diverged from this institutional construct. We shared and explored our memories of collegiality together during the COVID-19 pandemic and learnt how collegiality emerges through acts of care which produce feelings of support, visibility, and equality, thereby improving our wellbeing at work. We propose the concept of ‘collective collegiality’ as sitting alongside institutionalised notions of collegiality, representing a ‘counter space’ to performative notions of collegiality and enabling us to learn from each other how to navigate, survive, and even thrive, in the neoliberal academy. By enacting the lived experience of collective collegiality, we bring to light alternatives to neoliberal workplace ideals which may foster more organic, flexible workplaces and ways of working together.

The chapter explores the academic discussion on the airport as a place or non-place, a liminal space or space of transition, a space of mobility or immobility, a space shared with others, a space of surveillance and a space of consumption. It draws on literature from various fields of study including hospitality studies, sociology, anthropology, geography, mobility studies, transport studies and tourism management. In so doing, it demonstrates the complexity that is the modern airport experience for airline passengers. While the airport may be a symbol of global, postmodern nomadism, as social and cultural theorists propose, travellers may have a less grand view.

Abstract

Establishing the abundance and physical properties of regolith and boulders on asteroids is crucial for understanding the formation and degradation mechanisms at work on their surfaces. Using images and thermal data from NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft, we show that asteroid (101955) Bennu's surface is globally rough, dense with boulders, and low in albedo. The number of boulders is surprising given Bennu's moderate thermal inertia, suggesting that simple models linking thermal inertia to particle size do not adequately capture the complexity relating these properties. At the same time, we find evidence for a wide range of particle sizes with distinct albedo characteristics. Our findings imply that ages of Bennu's surface particles span from the disruption of the asteroid's parent body (boulders) to recent in situ production (micrometre-scale particles).

Abstract

Background: Healthcare is a major Australian employer and has a 75% female workforce1. Yet, here and internationally, women are underrepresented in healthcare leadership, failing to reflect our community or workforce1-3. Major barriers to change persist2-4. Healthcare lacks sector-wide, evidence-based, organisational approaches to drive effective change, leaving the burden to individuals to battle change alone4. Current efforts are adhoc, duplicative and of limited effectiveness and reach. Partnership, research and translation are urgently needed to deliver multifaceted organisational change for measurable improvement in equity4. Aim(s): We aim to create a national partnership across broad stakeholders and cross-sector academic expertise to codesign and deliver effective organisational change to AdvanceWomen in Healthcare Leadership (AWHL). Method(s): Stakeholder partnership, a shared vision, resourcing, evidence synthesis (systematic review, meta-synthesis and meta-ethnography), workshops, priority setting, qualitative research, codesign and implementation research with intervention, and evaluation, capturing and sharing learning for broad scale-up and impact. Result(s): Partnership across Professional Medical and Nursing Colleges including Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP), Australian Medical Association (AMA), leading health services, Government and academia (led by Monash University) has been established. A shared vision to advance women in healthcare leadership has been developed. Resourcing was obtained via partner contributions and a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Partnership Grant. Evidence synthesis identified evidence-based interventions and implementation strategies5. Codesign processes generated four research themes: Organisational Change Management; Leadership Development Programs; Nursing Leadership; and Role of Member Organisations (including RACP). Abstract

Marine heatwaves (MHWs), episodic periods of abnormally high sea surface temperature, severely affect marine ecosystems. Large marine ecosystems (LMEs) cover ~22% of the global ocean but account for 95% of global fisheries catches. Yet how climate change affects MHWs over LMEs remains unknown because such LMEs are confined to the coast where low-resolution climate models are known to have biases. Here, using a high-resolution Earth system model and applying a ‘future threshold’ that considers MHWs as anomalous warming above the long-term mean warming of sea surface temperatures, we find that future intensity and annual days of MHWs over the majority of the LMEs remain higher than in the present-day climate. Better resolution of ocean mesoscale eddies enables simulation of more realistic MHWs than low-resolution models. These increases in MHWs under global warming pose a serious threat to LMEs, even if resident organisms could adapt fully to the long-term mean warming.

45. The sustainability of gender norms: women over 30 and their physical appearance on holiday

Abstract

The present study examines women’s experiences of their physical appearance on holiday questioning whether gendered norms, focussed on the “ïdeal” body, are sustainable if women are to experience fully the health and wellness benefits promised in a holiday. While the research focus on body image has most often been adolescents and young women, this study explores the experiences of midlife and older women. Employing the feminist research method, memory-work, women individually wrote memories of recent experiences of physical appearance while on holiday and discussed them in collectives. The findings suggest that while some of the older women appear to have resisted societal directives for the body by focussing on what the body could do, rather than what the body looked like, for most, the dominant image of the body was oppressive with memories of appearance related to body weight/shape and clothing. The findings suggest that women, as they age, are confronted by gender, age and health discourses which are difficult to resist. Whether or not women can challenge core societal beliefs about appearance has implications for whether they can experience the freedom and lack of constraints popularly associated with a holiday.
