Purpose: This study aimed to assess the impact of oral nutritional supplements (ONS) on nutritional intake, body weight, and body composition in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients undergoing chemoradiotherapy. The study evaluated whether ONS could prevent treatment-related nutritional deterioration., Methods: This prospective observational pilot study included 30 HNC patients randomized into two groups: ONS (n = 15) and No ONS (n = 15). All participants underwent chemoradiotherapy, with the ONS group receiving 200 mL of a high-calorie, high-protein supplement twice daily. Nutritional status, including body weight, BMI, fat mass, fat-free mass, and bone mass, was assessed at three time points: baseline, mid-treatment, and end of treatment. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test, with a p -value of ≤0.05 considered statistically significant., Results: At baseline, there were no significant differences between the two groups in body weight, BMI, or body composition. By the end of radiotherapy, the No ONS group showed significant reductions in body weight ( p < 0.001), BMI ( p < 0.001), fat mass ( p < 0.001), and fat-free mass ( p < 0.001), while the ONS group maintained more stable nutritional parameters. Acute radiotherapy toxicities, including nausea, dysphagia, and oral mucositis, were not significantly different between the two groups., Conclusion: ONS effectively mitigates weight loss and preserves body composition in HNC patients undergoing chemoradiotherapy. While no significant reduction in radiation-induced toxicities was observed, the nutritional benefits of ONS support its use in preventing malnutrition in this patient population. Larger studies are needed to further validate these findings.

Nucleoli are the product of the activity of nucleolar organizer regions (NOR) in certain chromosomes. Their main functions are the formation of ribosomal subunits from ribosomal protein molecules and the transcription of genes encoding rRNA. The aim of the study was to determine the shape of nucleoli and analyse methylation in the gene RN28S in the spermatocytes of male Japanese quail (Coturnixjaponica) in two age groups. Nucleoli were analysed in cells of the first meiotic prophase. Their number and shape were determined and they were classified as regular, irregular or defragmented. In the cells of the young birds no defragmented nucleoli were observed, with regular and irregular nucleoli accounting for 97% and 3%, respectively. In the cells of older birds no regular nucleoli were observed, while irregular and defragmented nucleoli accounted for 37% and 67%, respectively. MSP (methylation-specific PCR) showed that the gene RN28S is methylated in both 15-week-old and 52-week-old quails. In recent years an association has been established between nucleolus morphology and cellular ageing processes.

The SCE test is often used as a sensitive and reliable technique in the biomonitoring of genotoxicity of mutagenic and carcinogenic agents. This study analysed the frequency of sister chromatid exchange in domestic horse chromosomes depending on the habitat and age of the analysed horses. The chromosome preparations were obtained from an in vitro culture of peripheral blood lymphocytes stained using the FPG technique. Both the habitat and the age significantly influence SCE frequency. A higher SCE incidence was observed in horses that lived in a large urban agglomeration than in those from the country. Also, a higher SCE incidence was identified in the group of horses above 6 years of age in comparison with the younger ones. Additionally, the frequency of SCEs in the first, second and third chromosomes and the X sex chromosome were analysed in detail. More exposed to the effect of environmental pollutants, the horses from the urban environment developed more double and triple SCEs in comparison with the village horses. The urban horses also developed quadruple SCEs, in addition to the less frequent exchanges.

The work was aimed at determining the number and morphology of nucleoli in the prophase of the first meiotic division in domestic cattle males. The use of AgNO₃ staining, commonly applied in cytogenetics for the identification of nucleolar organiser regions, made it possible to identify nucleoli in first-order spermatocytes. One nucleolus was identified in each analysed cell. Considerable morphological differentiation of the nucleoli during the prophase of the first meiotic division, particularly in leptotene, unobserved in other farm animal species, was noticed. Dark-hued grain-like structures were found within the disintegrating nucleoli, corresponding approximately or exactly to the number of the nucleolar organiser regions in the domestic cattle karyotype. Dark areas were identified in the selected prometaphase chromosomes. Their number corresponded with the number of active NORs defined in the domestic cattle karyotype.

Nucleoli are the product of nucleolus organizing region activity (NOR) of specific chromosomes. Their basic function is to synthetise ribosomal RNA precursors and promote the maturation and assemblage of preribosomal RNP molecules. Information on rRNA-coding gene activity can be provided by the analysis of the number and size of nucleoli in the prophase of the first meiotic division. The morphology and ultrastructure of a nucleolus depends, among others, on the species and cell growth cycle as well as the physiological and pathological state of an organism. The purpose of this research was to determine the number and size of nucleoli in the spermatocytes of the domestic chicken and the Japanese quail. Diverse numbers and sizes of nucleoli in the cells of the analysed birds were observed. 1-4 nucleoli were identified in chicken cells (1.91 +/- 0.63 on average) and 1-2 in quail cells (1.13 +/- 0.33 on average). For the total of 957 nucleoli observed in Gallus cells, 329 were classified as large and 628 as small. In Coturnix cells, 563 nucleoli were identified (66 large and 497 small ones). An analysis of the numbers and sizes of nucleoli can be performed at the cytogenetic level and serve as an alternative source of information on rRNA encoding gene and nucleolus organising region (NOR) activities.

The study was aimed at evaluating the frequency of spontaneous sister chromatid exchange in Polish White Improved goats (Capra hircus). The mean number of SCEs/cell was 2.73 +/- 1.84. The effect of sex and age on SCE incidence was also investigated. No statistically significant differences in the number of SCEs/cell were observed between the males and females. On the other hand, age was found to significantly influence SCE frequency. A lower SCE frequency was observed in younger goats. A positive correlation between chromosome length and SCE number was identified. The longer the chromosome, the more exchanges occurred. The highest number of SCEs was observed in the interstitial region, the lowest in the distal area.

The aim of the research was to compare the karyotypes of two goose species: the European domestic goose and the Asian goose on the basis of the karyotype of their interspecific cross-breed, using the RBG chromosome staining technique. The karyotype standard for Anseriformes has not been determined yet. The RBG technique is considered as one of the standard methods for analysing chromosomes. It is a dynamic method. The R bands appear during the cell growth cycle in the early S phase. The formation of the characteristic band configuration for each chromosome facilitates chromosome segregation and analysis. The mitotic chromosomes for experiments were obtained from an in vitro blood lymphocyte culture and stained according to the RBG technique. The first eight largest autosome pairs and the ZW sex chromosomes were analysed. No differences were found between the band patterns of the analysed chromosomes, except for the fourth autosome pair.

Lampbrush chromosomes (LBCs) present in bird oocytes are a new model in cytogenetics with particular significance for bird chromosome analysis. The fact that female birds are heterogametic makes it possible to observe both sex chromosomes in the form of decondensed structures typical of lampbrush chromosomes. A change in transcription activity associated with physiological processes in geese prior to and after the reproductive season is reflected in chromosome morphology. Lampbrush chromosomes obtained after the reproductive period have reduced side loops, sites of intensive transcriptional activity. However, noticeable characteristics in the chromosomes include inactive chromomeres. Chiasms, PBs, large side loops (ML) and telomeric loops (T, TLL, and GLL) are structures that undergo degradation latest after the termination of reproduction, and as a result, constitute the basis of identification of individual bivalents in different periods of the cell's transcriptional activity.

Chromosomal preparations obtained from an in vitro blood lymphocyte culture were RBG- and CBG-stained. The structures of nine and fourteen pairs of chromosomes were examined based on R bands and C bands, respectively. Ideograms of banded patterns of the analysed chromosomes were drawn. The sizes of individual constitutive heterochromatin blocks wereas measured. The morphology of the analysed chromosomes was assessed.

The synaptonemal complex (SC) is a protein structure which binds two homologues during prophase of the first meiotic division and assures the correct course of genetic recombination. The demonstration and identification of SCs in European domestic goose Anser anser was the aim of the current research. Standard techniques of SC identification do not allow for an analysis of their molecular structure. In meiotic cells of one-day-old nestlings and 17-week-old geese the haploid number of bivalents, darkly stained kinetochores and subtelomeric regions may be evidence for the presence of SCs. Experimental chromosome staining with the DAPI fluorochrome permitted the observation of the characteristic ladder-like structure of SCs and the course of synapsis formation within homologues from early leptotene to their degradation in late pachytene. The detailed molecular structure of synaptonemal complexes can be analysed with an electron or scanning microscope only. Because the bivalent is a direct result of the complex's presence, in the literature the presence of bivalents is equivalent to the term "synaptonemal complex". However, the bivalent and the SC are two different structures.

Chromosomal preparations obtained from an in vitro culture of blood lymphocytes were stained by means of the RBG and CBG banding techniques. The first nine pairs of chromosomes were analysed by the R banding technique, while fourteen pairs of chromosomes were analysed by the C banding technique. The localisation of R bands as well as the sizes and positions of constitutive heterochromatin blocks were determined. Ideograms of R and C banded patterns for the analysed chromosomes were drawn. The morphological make-up of the analysed chromosomes was assessed.

Chromosomal preparations obtained from in vitro blood lymphocyte cultures were RBG- and CBG-stained. The structures of nine and 14 pairs of chromosomes were analysed by the RBG and CBG chromosome banding techniques, respectively. The location of R bands, as well as the size and arrangement of constitutive heterochromatin blocks were determined. Ideograms of R and C banded patterns of the analysed chromosomes were drawn. The morphological makeup of the analysed chromosomes was assessed.

Chromosomal preparations obtained from an in vitro culture of blood lymphocytes were stained with the RBG and CBG techniques. The RBG technique enabled the analysis of the structure of nine pairs of chromosomes whereas the CBG technique - fourteen pairs ofchromosomes from the total ofeighty goose chromosomes. The morphology and the R and C banding patterns were described. The size and arrangement of the blocks of constitutive chromatin were determined. Ideograms of R and C banded patterns were drawn. The morphological structure of the analysed chromosomes was evaluated.
