14. Early Life Environmental Factors Associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder Symptoms in Children at Age 2 Years: A Birth Cohort Study

Abstract

Mounting evidence finds that early life environmental factors increased the probability of autism spectrum disorder. We estimated prospective associations between early life environmental factors and autism spectrum disorder symptoms in children at the age of 2 years in a population-derived birth cohort, the Barwon Infant Study. Autism spectrum disorder symptoms at the age of 2 years strongly predicted autism spectrum disorder diagnosis by the age of 4 years (area under curve = 0.93; 95% CI (0.82, 1.00)). After adjusting for child's sex and age at the time of behavioural assessment, markers of socioeconomic disadvantage, such as lower household income and lone parental status; maternal health factors, including younger maternal age, maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index, higher gestational weight gain and prenatal maternal stress; prenatal alcohol; environmental air pollutant exposures, including particulate matter < 2.5 [mu]m at birth, child secondhand tobacco smoke exposure at 12 months, dampness/mould and home heating with oil, kerosene or diesel heaters at 2 years postnatal. Lower socioeconomic indexes for area, later birth order, higher maternal prenatal depression, and maternal smoking frequency had a dose-response relationship with autism spectrum disorder symptoms. Future studies on environmental factors and autism spectrum disorder should consider the reasons for the socioeconomic disparity and the combined impact of multiple environmental factors through common mechanistic pathways. 22. Performance of variable and function selection methods for estimating the non-linear health effects of correlated chemical mixtures: a simulation study

Abstract

Statistical methods for identifying harmful chemicals in a correlated mixture often assume linearity in exposure-response relationships. Non-monotonic relationships are increasingly recognised (e.g., for endocrine-disrupting chemicals); however, the impact of non-monotonicity on exposure selection has not been evaluated. In a simulation study, we assessed the performance of Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), Bayesian additive regression trees (BART), Bayesian structured additive regression with spike-slab priors (BSTARSS), and lasso penalised regression. We used data on exposure to 12 phthalates and phenols in pregnant women from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to simulate realistic exposure data using a multivariate copula. We simulated datasets of size N = 250 and compared methods across 32 scenarios, varying by model size and sparsity, signal-to-noise ratio, correlation structure, and exposure-response relationship shapes. We compared methods in terms of their sensitivity, specificity, and estimation accuracy. In most scenarios, BKMR and BSTARSS achieved moderate to high specificity (0.56--0.91 and 0.57--0.96, respectively) and sensitivity (0.49--0.98 and 0.25--0.97, respectively). BART achieved high specificity ($\geq$ 0.96), but low to moderate sensitivity (0.13--0.66). Lasso was highly sensitive (0.75--0.99), except for symmetric inverse-U-shaped relationships ($\leq$ 0.2). Performance was affected by the signal-to-noise ratio, but not substantially by the correlation structure. Penalised regression methods that assume linearity, such as lasso, may not be suitable for studies of environmental chemicals hypothesised to have non-monotonic relationships with outcomes. Instead, BKMR and BSTARSS are attractive methods for flexibly estimating the shapes of exposure-response relationships and selecting among correlated exposures.

Abstract

This bibliometric study employs a rigorous approach to scrutinize and visually represent the existing body of literature on indoor air quality (IAQ). Utilizing the Scopus collection database, we conducted an exhaustive exploration of published research literature in the IAQ field. The study involves a thorough visual analysis using Harzing's Publish and Perish and VOSviewer software programs, examining parameters such as citations, publication year, journals, authors, research institutions, countries, and research topics. A total of 1729 pieces of literature related to IAQ research from 2018 to 2023 were retrieved. The dominant formats were articles and conference papers, underscoring their significance in IAQ documentation. Primary subject areas included "Engineering" and "Environmental Science," highlighting the multidisciplinary nature of IAQ studies. The upward trend in IAQ publications, reaching 330 articles in 2023, emphasizes the growing importance of this field. However, citation impact varied, emphasizing the need to assess research quality alongside quantity. Global distribution identified leading countries, including the United States, China, and the United Kingdom, which were also top contributors in co‐authorship and country‐level analyses. The top journals were "Building and Environment" and "Sustainable Cities and Society," showcasing varying publication and citation powers. Notable impactful articles in the IAQ domain were led by Agarwal et al. and Van Tran, Park, and Lee. Keyword co‐occurrence analysis identified thematic clusters, with keywords such as "Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)," "Air Quality," and "Indoor Air Pollution" dominating the literature. Through a comprehensive analysis of published literature, this study provides a visual representation of studies with significant contributions to the IAQ field, offering insights into its development and changes from 2018 to 2023. Abstract

The association of air pollution and greenspace with respiratory pathogen acquisition and respiratory health was investigated in a community-based birth-cohort of 158 Australian children. Weekly nasal swabs and daily symptom-diaries were collected for 2-years, with annual reviews from ages 3-7-years. Annual exposure to fine-particulate-matter (PM2.5), nitrogen-dioxide (NO2), and normalised-difference-vegetation-index (NDVI) was estimated for pregnancy and the first 2-years-of-life. We examined rhinovirus, any respiratory virus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Haemophilus influenzae detections in the first 3-months-of-life, age at initial pathogen detection, wheezing in the first 2-years, and asthma at ages 5-7-years. Our findings suggest that higher NDVI was associated with fewer viral and M. catarrhalis detections in the first 3-months, while increased PM2.5 and NO2 were linked to earlier symptomatic rhinovirus and H. influenzae detections, respectively. However, no associations were observed with wheezing or asthma. Early-life exposure to air pollution and greenspace may influence early-life respiratory pathogen acquisition and illness. Abstract

Background and objective: The association between air pollution and poor respiratory health outcomes is well established. Children are particularly at risk from air pollution, especially during the prenatal period as their organs and systems are still undergoing crucial development. This study investigated maternal exposure to air pollution during pregnancy and oxidative stress (OS), inflammation, and infant lung function at 4 weeks of age. Methods: Data from the Barwon Infant Study were available for 314 infants. The exposure to NO2 and PM2.5 were estimated. Infant lung function (4 weeks) was measured by multiple-breath washout. Glycoprotein acetyls (GlycA) (36 weeks prenatal), cord blood, and OS biomarkers were measured in maternal urine (28 weeks). A genetic pathway score for OS (gPFSox) was calculated. Linear regression was used and potential modification by the OS genotype was tested. Results: There was no relationship between maternal exposure to air pollution and infant lung function, or with GlycA or OS during pregnancy. We found an association in children with a genetic propensity to OS between NO2 and a lower functional residual capacity (FRC) (β = −5.3 mls, 95% CI (−9.3, −1.3), p = 0.01) and lung clearance index (LCI) score (β = 0.46 turnovers, (95% CI 0.10, 0.82), p = 0.01). Conclusion: High prenatal exposure to ambient NO2 is associated with a lower FRC and a higher LCI score in infants with a genetic propensity to oxidative stress. There was no relationship between maternal exposure to air pollution with maternal and cord blood inflammation or OS biomarkers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introduction Extremely preterm births (EPT), require complex decision making and significant medical interventions. While environmental factors such as ambient temperature extremes have been associated with preterm births, little is known of the environmental associations with EPT births. The objective of this study is to explore whether ambient temperature is associated with increased risk of EPT birth. Methods Birth records for 315,226 infants born in Queensland Australia (2007-2015) were matched to average maximum and minimum temperature for the last month of pregnancy. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated using a generalised linear model. Population attributable risk was calculated for a 5% reduction in maximum temperature. Results Each one degree increase in maximum [aOR 1.03 (95% CI 1.01, 1.05)] and minimum temperature [aOR 1.02 (95% CI 1.01, 1.04)] was associated with an increase in odds for EPT birth. Increased odds for EPT births was found for maternal smoking [aOR 1.46 (95% CI 1.23, 1.72)], increasing plurality [OR 6.38 (95% CI 5.48, 7.42)] and stillbirth [aOR 342.99 (95% CI 295.53, 398.06)]. When stratified by birth status, the association was only found for live births. Discussion Higher temperatures are associated with small increases in the odds of delivering an infant in the EPT period. The risk may be enhanced for women who smoke during pregnancy.
