Abstract

The prevalance of pelvic floor problems is high within the female population. Transperineal ultrasound (TPUS) is the main imaging modality used to investigate these problems. Automating the analysis of TPUS data will help in growing our understanding of pelvic floor related problems. In this study we present a U-net like neural network with some convolutional long short term memory (CLSTM) layers to automate the 3D segmentation of the levator ani muscle (LAM) in TPUS volumes. The CLSTM layers are added to preserve the inter-slice 3D information. We reach human level performance on this segmentation task. Therefore, we conclude that we successfully automated the segmentation of the LAM on 3D TPUS data. This paves the way towards automatic in-vivo analysis of the LAM mechanics in the context of large study populations.

Abstract

At present, operators address the explosive growth of mobile data demand by densification of the cellular network so as to reduce the transmitter-receiver distance and to achieve higher spectral efficiency. Due to such network densification and the intense proliferation of wireless devices, modern wireless networks are interference-limited, which motivates the use of interference mitigation and coordination techniques. In this work, we develop a statistical framework to evaluate the performance of multi-tier heterogeneous networks with successive interference cancellation (SIC) capabilities, accounting for the computational complexity of the cancellation scheme and relevant network related parameters such as random location of the access points (APs) and mobile users, and the characteristics of the wireless propagation channel. We explicitly model the consecutive events of canceling interferers and we derive the success probability to cancel the n-th strongest signal and to decode the signal of interest after n cancellations. When users are connected to the AP which provides the maximum average received signal power, the analysis indicates that the performance gains of SIC diminish quickly with n and the benefits are modest for realistic values of the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR). We extend the statistical model to include several association policies where distinct gains of SIC are expected: (i) minimum load association, (ii) maxi- mum instantaneous SIR association, and (iii) range expansion. Numerical results show the effectiveness of SIC for the considered association policies. 28. Speed-of-sound compensated photoacoustic tomography for accurate imaging

Abstract

In most photoacoustic (PA) measurements, variations in speed-of-sound (SOS) of the subject are neglected under the assumption of acoustic homogeneity. Biological tissue with spatially heterogeneous SOS cannot be accurately reconstructed under this assumption. We present experimental and image reconstruction methods with which 2-D SOS distributions can be accurately acquired and reconstructed, and with which the SOS map can be used subsequently to reconstruct highly accurate PA tomograms. We begin with a 2-D iterative reconstruction approach in an ultrasound transmission tomography (UTT) setting, which uses ray refracted paths instead of straight ray paths to recover accurate SOS images of the subject. Subsequently, we use the SOS distribution in a new 2-D iterative approach, where refraction of rays originating from PA sources are accounted for in accurately retrieving the distribution of these sources. Both the SOS reconstruction and SOS-compensated PA reconstruction methods utilize the Eikonal equation to model acoustic wavefront propagation, which is solved using a high accuracy fast marching method (HAFMM). We validate the new reconstruction algorithms using numerical phantoms. For experiments we use the PER-PACT method which can be used to simultaneously acquire SOS and PA data from subjects. We test the reconstruction algorithms using experimental data acquired with the PER-PACT setup from challenging physical phantoms. The results show that it is important to take SOS inhomogeneities into account. The iterative reconstruction algorithms, that model acoustic refractive effects, yield artifact-free highly accurate images. Our approach of using the hybrid measurement method and the new reconstruction algorithms, is successful in substantially improving the quality of PA images with a minimization of blurring and artefacts., Comment: Accepted Medical Physics (American Association of Physicists in Medicine). Abstract

Patients suffering from pectus excavatum often experience psychosocial distress due to perceived anomalies in their physical appearance. The ability to visually inform patients about their expected aesthetic outcome after surgical correction is still lacking. This study aims to develop an automatic, patient-specific model to predict aesthetic outcome after the Nuss procedure. Patients prospectively received preoperative and postoperative 3-dimensional optical surface scanning of their chest during the Nuss procedure. A prediction model was composed based on nonlinear least squares data-fitting, regression methods and a 2-dimensional Gaussian function with adjustable amplitude, variance, rotation, skewness, and kurtosis components. Morphological features of pectus excavatum were extracted from preoperative images using a previously developed surface analysis tool to generate a patient-specific model. Prediction accuracy was evaluated through cross-validation, utilizing the mean root squared deviation and maximum positive and negative deviations as performance measures. The prediction model was evaluated on 30 (90% male) prospectively imaged patients. The model achieved an average root mean squared deviation of 6.3 ± 2.0 mm, with average maximum positive and negative deviations of 12.7 ± 6.1 and -10.2 ± 5.7 mm, respectively, between the predicted and actual postoperative aesthetic result. Our developed 2-dimensional Gaussian model based on 3-dimensional optical surface images is a clinically promising tool to predict postsurgical aesthetic outcome in patients with pectus excavatum. Prediction of the aesthetic outcome after the Nuss procedure potentially improves information provision and expectation management among patients. Further research should assess whether increasing the sample size may reduce deviations and improve performance.
