Hydrogen embrittlement (HE) resistance is a significant concern in austenitic stainless steel (ASS) used for hydrogen transportation and storage. While microstructure-controlled methods to enhance HE resistance have been extensively studied in ferritic steels, comprehensive research on microstructure effects in ASS is lacking. In this study, two 316L ASSs with different microstructures were evaluated for HE resistance using electrochemical hydrogen charging. The steel with abundant in + orientations showed a significant elongation reduction after hydrogen charging. It revealed that, from the hydrogen permeation and thermal desorption analysis (TDA) results, effective diffusivity and activation energy of hydrogen were changed along the crystallographic orientation distributions. Also, transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) and twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) behavior affecting to the HE resistance preferentially formed in grains with and orientations rather than in those with orientation during plastic deformation. Therefore, the study suggests that reinforcing the microstructure is advantageous for improving HE resistance in 316L ASS.

Hydrogen embrittlement (HE) has arisen as one of main issues for developing high-strength lightweight steels. The precipitation of fine particles providing as stable H-trapping sites is preferred to overcome the intrinsic HE of high-strength steels. However, studies on HE in high-strength lightweight steels along with roles of B2 particles have not been reported yet. In this study, three Fe–0.8C–15Mn–7Al–(0,1,3)Cu duplex lightweight steels were fabricated, and their resistance to HE was evaluated. Roles of Cu addition were investigated by the loss of elongation measured from slow-strain-rate tensile tests and by the concentration and diffusivity of H measured from electrochemical H permeation tests. The Cu addition results in the decreased elongation loss and the lower concentration and effective diffusivity of reversible H, indicating the higher resistance to HE. The unraveled mechanism is that the Cu addition increases the fraction of austenite, where the diffusivity of H is much lower than ferrite, and decreases the strain localization along ferrite grains to reduce the internal diffusion of H during deformation. In addition, it promotes the formation of complex semi-coherent Cu-rich B2 particles, which provides misfit dislocations at interfaces as stable and irreversible H-trapping sites. The B2 particles preferentially nucleated at reversible sites such as grain boundaries and phase interfaces promote a transition from reversible to irreversible sites, which further reduces the diffusivity of H. The present work, thus, would suggest the Cu addition to enhance both tensile properties and resistance to HE for designing high-strength lightweight steels. Hydrogen embrittlement (HE) has arisen as a critical issue for the development of high strength steel. The austenite and Cu-rich precipitates can provide stable trapping sites for diffusible hydrogen, and thus improved the resistance to HE. But the research on the synergistic effect of Cu and austenite on HE in low carbon low alloy steel has not been actively reported. In this study, four steels with varying Cu addition (0-3 wt%) were fabricated, and their resistance to HE was evaluated. The role of Cu addition was investigated by the ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) value obtained from Charpy impact test and the loss of elongation measured from slow-strain-rate tensile (SSRT) test after hydrogen charging. Also, the hydrogen diffusivity and concentration were evaluated by electrochemical hydrogen permeation test. Cu addition resulted in a first decrease and subsequent increase of effective diffusion coefficient (D eff), elongation loss and DBTT, and the minimum value was achieved in steel with 1.5 wt% Cu addition, indicating a higher resistance to HE. The unraveled mechanism was that Cu addition increased the content of retained austenite, which impeded the diffusion of hydrogen during deformation. But the stability of retained austenite decreased when the content of retained austenite reached a high value, which led to martensitic transformation and accordingly increased HE susceptibility. Moreover, Cu addition promoted the formation of Cu-rich precipitates in which Cu cluster/bcc Cu-rich precipitate coherent/semi-coherent with matrix can be strong trapping sites for hydrogen, and fcc Cu-rich precipitate acted as weak trapping sites for hydrogen. In addition, a higher density of dislocations was found in the steel with 1.5 wt% Cu addition, which may contribute to lower D eff and higher density of hydrogen traps (N T). The present work suggested that Cu addition can enhance the resistance to HE during tensile and impact processes for the design of high strength steel. • Cu addition resulted in a first decrease and subsequent increase in D eff of hydrogen. • Cu addition increased the elongation rate and decreased DBTT of the steels after hydrogen embrittlement. • The resistance to HE during tensile and impact was determined by austenite, Cu-rich precipitates and dislocations. • The resistance to HE varied with the content and stability of austenite and the structure of Cu-rich precipitates.
