- Abstract
Purpose: To present the history of Slovenian libraries in Argentina: outline the work and organization of the libraries (whether they have a catalogue, how lending is done, what the opening hours are, etc.), characteristics of the users, borrowing, visits of the libraries, opinions what they would change in their library, and to present the importance of the libraries for the Slovenian community in the past and today. Methodology/approach: Literature review and fieldwork. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with respondents from 18 Slovenian libraries in Argentina, the data was content analysed. Results: The Slovenian community in Argentina is organized in associations, most of which have libraries, as do the umbrella organization of Slovenians in Argentina, Zedi njena Slovenija, and the Slovene language lectorates in Buenos Aires and Cordoba (eighteen libraries in total). Most libraries are in Buenos Aires, but they are also present in Mendoza, Bariloche, Rosario, Cordoba, and Paraná. Most libraries are community and school libraries. The librarians are mostly volunteers without librarian education. The libraries obtain their materials from Slovenia or through donations and inheritances. Most do not have a catalogue, do not keep records of borrowed books, their opening hours are usually during society events. They rarely or never organize events. The only service they offer is book lending, mostly to children, Slovenian school teachers and older members. Only the library in Bariloche is included in the COBISS system. The most vital libraries are those of the third-wave emigration associations, most of which were founded in the first decade after the Second World War. They are important for the preservation of Slovenian culture and language, but also have historical, archival and symbolic value for the community. Originality/practical implications: The first research on Slovenian libraries in Argentina. In addition to an overview of the history and situation of libraries, it also gives some guidelines for the future development of Slovenian emigrant libraries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the reign of Maria Theresia and her son Emperor Joseph II, Trieste was completely rebuilt and became an att ractive free tax port of the Habsburg Empire. From the beginning of the eighteenth century to the first decade of the twentieth century, the population of Trieste increased from 5,000 to 230,000 inhabitants with an incredible number of migrants coming from Central Europe and the Mediterranean coastal areas. The multiethnic middle class obtained a series of privileges never granted before to the nobility, and its status is recognisable through the passion for chamber music and symphonies of Wiener Klassik, played both in private and public concerts. With the help of Czech intellectuals and musicians, during the 1860s the native Slovenes established a group of societies in which Romantic music and national anthems or Lieder were played. This trend culminated in the foundation of the Narodni dom (National House) and the Glasbena matica ([Slovene] Music Society). At the same time, the Italian nationalists maintained partial control of the Opera house, and the German minority reacted with the Schillerverein, in which Julius Heller spent his energies in spreading the music of Romantic and late-Romantic authors. Despite the political clash, the three groups gave significant impulse to instrumental music, which has marked the culture of Trieste. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the article are analyzed cooperation of the Ukrainian and Slovenian deputies in the Vienna parliament as a part of the group -- "Slavic Christian national union". Functioning of the group was a consequence of common interests of its participants on national equality. The main stages of activity of the group and also the factors which had an impact on its efficiency are considered. This group was nearly only in the Austrian parliament for 1897--1900 which was on positions of national equality and protected the interests of Slavs. The activity of the group's deputies regarding the improvement of the socio-economic, cultural and educational situation of Ukrainians and Slovenians in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy was analyzed.

There are a small number of Slovenians living in Montenegro, but they are still very interesting to study. The first census of the population of Montenegro was carried out in 1879 during the reign of Prince Nikola. The first fairly accurate census data dates back to 1909, while later, modern censuses were carried out in three state-territorial contexts. Six censuses were conducted during the Kingdom of the SHS (1921 and 1931), six censuses during the SFRY (1948-1991) and two censuses during the independent Republic of Montenegro (2003 and 2011). The Slovenian population was already visible in the 1921 census, when 55 persons identified themselves as Slovenes. The first census in modern Montenegro counted 415 Slovenians, for whom demographic trends are desperate and represent a biological depopulation. In the last census in 2011, even fewer persons declared themselves Slovenes, 354, and the average age rose to 53.2 years. The present work provides a basic demographic analysis of Slovenians in the Republic of Montenegro and how the change in the country's legal status has affected the development of the Slovenian population and its organisation in the new state.

WORLD War I , *NATIONALISM , *POLITICAL reform , *SLOVENES , *EMPERORS , *CULTS , *RECOLLECTION (Psychology) ,AUSTRIAN history - Abstract
During the life of Franz Joseph, the Slovenes were undoubtedly one of the most loyal nations to the emperor. Slovene devotion, having grown into a worship of the imperial cult, found expression at a great variety of festivities and commemorations marking the jubilees of the emperor’s rule and his birthdays. However, their infinite allegiance began to crumble on the eve of the First World War, when in face of Franz Joseph’s reluctance to pursue radical political reforms, it gradually gave way to national consciousness and the struggle for equality, especially among the younger generations of intellectuals and politicians. Nevertheless, the Slovenes would continue to consider Franz Joseph as the symbol of existence and the “Father of the Nation” until his death in 1916. General shortages and political crisis, which, combined with military defeats, culminated in the disintegration of Austria-Hungary at the end of the war, changed the perception of the former sovereign and above all his public image, now propagandized by the new authorities. In Hinko Smrekar’s caricature, Franz Joseph was sent to hell and the visible symbols of the Habsburg rule were relegated to the dustbin of history. The onset of the Yugoslav period in Slovene history ushered in the use of textbooks with a view to indoctrinating the future generations, that is, the part of the population that did not have personal experience of living under the Habsburg scepter. In both royal and socialist Yugoslavia, the authors of textbooks sought to eliminate the image of Franz Joseph from learning contents and frame his rule in the diction “the emperor was,” “the court was,” etc. His name was systematically removed from practically all textbooks in the said period. Strikingly, however, the emperor was the subject of “forgetting” rather than demonization: in addressing the periods when Franz Joseph’s role could have been denigrated in line with both royal and socialist Yugoslav ideologies, textbooks simply sidelined rather than demonized him. The perception of Franz Joseph’s historical role began to change in the early 1980s, during the gradual disintegration of Yugoslavia, when literature rekindled the interest in the period of the monarchy and Franz Joseph, who returned to Slovene historical consciousness with his full name and reclaimed his symbolic role of the good old emperor [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents the basic demographic characteristics of Slovenes in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Hercegovina - BiH). A comparison of the 1991 and 2013 censuses is made. The dynamics of the number, territorial dispersion, gender, age and religious structure of Slovenes in the period before and after the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina are analyzed. The evacuation of 348 Slovenes from Sarajevo in November 1992 had a profound effect on the number, structure and territorial distribution of the Slovene population in the capital of BiH. Due to a more objective picture of Slovenes regarding their ethnicity, some other data is also included. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents the idea of a third unit in the Habsburg Monarchy prior to World War I as seen through the eyes of Slovenian liberals. The author presents the broader political context in which the concept emerged and then analyses the reactions of various political groups amid national tensions in the Balkans. Extracts of two liberal Slovenian newspapers, Edinost (Trieste) and Soča (Gorizia), are examined with respect to the key geopolitical dilemmas and interests of different stakeholders affected by the new geopolitical construct. It is argued that trialism was chiefly an attempt by Austria to curtail the power of Hungary. The majority of Slovenians and Croatians initially supported the idea because it implied their political emancipation. On the other side were the Hungarians, Italians and Serbs who saw the idea as a threat to their national interests. In terms of South Slavic relations, trialism represented a new battlefield for the Catholic and Orthodox visions of Yugoslavism. With further development of the concept, first and foremost due to Austria's ambitions to satisfy the Italians and leave Trieste and Gorizia outside of the imagined third unit, the idea introduced tension into Croatian–Slovenian relations and led to a fresh dispute in the Slovenian political sphere between liberals and conservatives. Finally, the advocates of trialism were unable to gain sufficient internal support within the Habsburg Monarchy, which thereby preserved the status quo and the dual regime until the monarchy's collapse during war.

Poglobitev v zgodovino oblikovanja norm knjižne slovenščine kaže, da sta bili v 19. stoletju odločilnega pomena dve stalnici: slovenskost in enotnost. Going deeper into the history of the formation of the norms of standard Slovene, it emerges that in the 19th century there were two crucial constants: Slovene identity and unity. This article elaborates already known findings about the important role played by Miklošič in the standardisation of the standard language through an analysis of certain norms that did not feature on the original list of new forms. Miklošič's theoretical views are identified and the conclusion is reached that many of his decisions were based on knowledge of development tendencies.

Magistrsko delo skuša prikazati razvoj pripadnostnih kostumov Slovencev in Rusov v devetnajstem stoletju. The thesis presents the development of the traditional costumes of Slovenes and Russians in 19th Century. The first part of the thesis presents theoretical points related to the theme of traditional costuming, such as fashion and clothing, nation, and cultural heritage. The thesis also presents the historical background as the development of the traditional costume in both nations is directly related to events in history. Therefore, the thesis introduces key events and persons who contributed to the national awakening and development of the Slovene nation living in the Austrian Empire at the time. To show their belonging, Slovenes wore pieces of clothing that were taken from the peasant costume, which further resulted in the development of the Slovene traditional costume. Compared to Slovenes, the Russian traditional costume developed earlier. Therefore, the thesis also contains a brief overview of Russian history with the most important events and persons who had a significant influence on the development of the traditional costume, with the special feature that the Russian women's costumes had various versions. The central part of the thesis shows the development of the traditional costumes and the description of the individual clothing pieces, accompanied by some images for an easier presentation. The second part of the thesis presents a comparison of the traditional costumes of the two nations. Hence, the thesis comparatively introduces the development of the two nations in connection with the development of clothing items, and its effect on the traditional costumes, which are still worn to this day with the purpose of showing belonging to the Slovene or Russian nation.

WORLD War II , *SLOVENES , *CROATS , *BRITISH people , *VOLUNTEERS - Abstract
This article focuses on the causes for the formation of the British commandos during the Second World War and in particular the functioning of the 10th Inter-Allied Commando, which included No. 7 (Yugoslav) Troop, mostly comprised of Slovenes. No. 7 Yugoslav Troop was formed to conduct military operations in the Mediterranean and the Adriatic. It was composed of selected volunteers from the Yugoslav Royal Guard Battalion who wanted to liberate their homeland alongside the Allies. From among the commandos trained and selected, the British planned to send at least twenty-three Slovenes and two Croats into combat, separately in two groups. The first group only ended up fighting on the Dalmatian islands in early 1944, whereas the other did not fight at all. The reason for this was that the majority wanted to join the Partisans and help them liberate Yugoslavia. No. 7 Yugoslav Troop did not entirely meet the British expectations. Because of the problems described, the Slovenian and Croatian commandos were withdrawn from Yugoslavia and their troop was disbanded on April 15th, 1944. The British authorities thus assigned them elsewhere, but ultimately eighteen of them succeeded in being included as members of the overseas brigades in dispatching aid to the Partisans from June 1944 onward. The fate of seven remains unknown. The literature on the overseas brigades only reveals that six of them continued as commandos in other British units. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Franc Miklošič was undoubtedly one of the most educated, internationally renowned and influential Slovene intellectuals of the second half of the nineteenth century and is foremost regarded as a philologist, linguist and one of the founders of Slavic studies. However, Miklošič's intellectual versatility also led to his engagement with history, ethnography, anthropology and law, predicated on interdisciplinary and comparative approaches. Apart from a few translations of Austrian legislation into Slovene, Miklošič did not devote himself to legal matters, with the exception of blood feud in Die Blutrache bei den Slaven (1887), one of the key works on the topic at the time. Although he agreed with the evolutionist and legal positivist views of his time on the State as the pinnacle of civilization, compared to the supposed chaos of prior societies (which continue to remain popular), in Blutrache Miklošič also presented the characteristics of the customary system of conflict resolution in kinship-based societies, which attest to the complexity of social relations in premodern Europe. It is with the help of Miklošič's work that this paper reconstructs the customary ritual of conflict resolution, which was known to all premodern European societies, and presents the attitude of his and later times towar ds blood feud. WORLD War I , *SLOVENES , *CROATS , *LITERARY sources , *RISK-taking behavior ,ITALIAN history - Abstract
The period between the end of October and the beginning of November 1918 was the first real historic moment, when the border between Italy and the newly emerging Yugoslav state - in the area of Venezia Giulia - was drawn. At the time, the Italian side had a great advantage. Based on primary sources and rich literature, the article analyzes the three most important political and legal-formal (rather than military) advantages, that Italy had against Slovenes and Croats in occupying Venezia Giulia at the end of World War I. Firstly, these were the promises made to Italy regarding the entering the World War I on the side of the Entente, by the 1915 London Memorandum. The Memorandum was not a legally-formally binding document. It was a political document, which was extremely important, even decisive, after the end of the war. In the context of these promises, the Italian side had steadily directed its policies before and after the fighting had ended, and demanded that the Allies (Great Britain and France) fully realize it; and in London and Paris, they did not want any resentments by Italy. Secondly, Italy was one of the winners of the war, while Slovenes and Croats were in a completely different position, because they were not even fully internationally recognized. This problem had its roots in the years during the war. The British and French did not take the risk to officially recognize the Yugoslav Committee, which would have been important for Slovenes and Croats. However, we can say that the British worked hard to find common grounds with the Serbian side (Nikola Pašić) and the Committee (Ante Trumbić). Additional complications occurred in Montenegro due to different views and preferences. This turned to an additional advantage for Italy and therefore a disadvantage for the Yugoslav idea, and also for the Slovenes and Croats in Venezia Giulia. Third, the great advantage were the conditions that Austria-Hungary had to accept at the end of the war (signed 3 November 1918). On the one hand, the conditions for Austria-Hungary were very restrictive, which meant that they offered great advantages to Italy. The terms stemmed from inter-war promises, though the latter were not mentioned in the "capitulation" text. Even when occupied onshore, the conditions were almost the same as promised under the 1915 London Memorandum. The only problem for Italy could have been the point 6, that refered to a joint occupation of the land. Additional favorable conditions for the Italian side were the maritime clauses, that were not mentioned in the Memorandum of 1915. All these advantages were mentioned in previous studies, but they have not been addressed in detail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article deals with the issue of incorporating young members of Slovene minorities in neighbouring countries into Slovenia’s diplomatic and foreign policy activities. The key precondition for this is the perception of Slovenia as their kin-state. The paper brings two main findings: the first is that a definition of kin-state as a unique concept is problematic, since it changes with different variables. The second finding refers to a concrete case study of young members of Slovene minorities in neighbouring countries, who have different contexts and perceptions of Slovenia (and Slovenehood). This means that Slovenia needs a comprehensive overhaul – and adaption to different conditions – of its own understanding of its ethnic minorities in the neighbouring countries if it wishes to include its young kin in Austria, Croatia, Hungary and Italy in its foreign policy and diplomacy. Ti namreč Slovenijo (in slovenstvo) razumejo v različnih kontekstih in predstavah.
