Abstract

Isotopic measurements at the micron scale using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) require an accurate control on the instrumental mass fractionation (IMF). The IMF correction is challenging since substantial mass fractionation can occur during both emission and detection processes. In this work, we report hydrogen isotopic measurements on a series of organic standards using polyatomic ions (CH-, CD-, C2H-, C2D-) with the NanoSIMS-50 instrument. We show that the D/H ratios resulting from the measurement of CD-/CH- and C2D-/C2H- ratios are close to the true D/H ratios of the samples over more than 3 decades and allow accurate hydrogen isotopic measurements to be performed in solid samples. Large secondary emission yields are usually associated with high electron affinities and correlate presently with low IMF effects. Moreover, we show that even when large variations in secondary ionic current are observed, an accurate isotopic ratio can still be inferred. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Solid solutions of transition elements in copper, nickel, cobalt, iron, and aluminum matrices were analyzed by observing secondary ion emissions under bombardment with 6.2-keV argon ions. Enchancement of the production of solute-element ions was observed. An ion emission model is proposed according to which the ion yield is governed by the probability of an atom leaving the metal in a preionized state. The energy distribution of the valence electrons of the solute atoms is the bases of the probability calculation.

Abstract

Abstract: Negative silicon ions sputtered from a set of olivines under Cs bombardment show useful yield UY variations depending on sample compositions. Those matrix effects are correlated with atomic concentrations of implanted cesium close to surface, which in turn depend on sputtering yields. It is shown that instrumental mass fractionations IMF on isotopes are depending on UY. A linear relationship between IMF and the inverse of Af, the Cs atomic fraction, is experimentally established for Si as well as a linear dependence of UY on Af. A model linking the two sets of experimental data is proposed. Measurement artefacts are reviewed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

37. Influence of temperature on the secondary ion emission of a monocrystalline aluminium target

Abstract

We have studied with a Slodzian's microanalyser in which the target is horizontal, the secondary ion emission of solid and liquid aluminium versus temperature from 300°K to 1000°K.We found an increase with temperature of the secondary emission in channeling directions and a decrease in the other directions. The behaviour of the clusters was also studied. We found no great difference between solid and liquid state for the clusters intensities. A slight difference is found in the energy distribution of secondary ions when the crystal is bombarded in different directions.

Abstract

Tris-hydroxymethyl-amino-methane telomers bearing a fluorinated end have recently been proposed as potential drug carriers. Using ion microscopy, we have investigated the cell uptake and subcellular distribution of a perfluorinated telomere, called F-TAC, in two cell lines, malignant murine B16 melanoma and normal rat skin fibroblasts. Single layer cell cultures on gold plates were incubated with F-TAC at different concentrations. Ion microscopy using mass spectrometry enabled the detection of Fluorine 19 atoms entering into F-TAC constitution. This microanalytical study showed an elective cytoplasmic localization of the molecule, wherein the distribution is relatively homogeneous. Within same culture and incubation conditions, intercellular variations in F-TAC content were very low. In the malignant line, the intracellular concentration remains practically identical when increasing F-TAC concentration in the culture medium above 0.2 mg/ml, indicating that the uptake phenomenon is saturable. In conclusion, the F-TAC telomer easily crosses the plasma membrane, however, it has difficulties in crossing the nuclear membrane. It is likely that intracellular penetration is essentially due to rapid endocytosis of the telomer.
