Light is characterized by its electric field, yet quantum optics has revealed the importance of monitoring photon-photon correlations at all orders. We here present a comparative study of two experimental setups, composed of cold and warm Rubidium atoms, respectively, which allow us to probe and compare photon correlations up to the fourth order. The former operates in the quantum regime where spontaneous emission dominates, whereas the latter exhibits a temperature-limited coherence time. While both setups present almost-chaotic light statistics, we discuss how the access to different orders of photon correlations allows one to better characterize the mechanisms responsible for deviations from those statistics.

The distributed quantum information processing and hybridization of quantum platforms raises increasing demands on the quality of light-matter interaction and realization of efficient quantum interfaces. This becomes particularly challenging for needed states possessing fundamental quantum non-Gaussian (QNG) aspects. They correspond to paramount resources in most potent applications of quantum technologies. We demonstrate the generation of light with provably QNG features from a tunable warm atomic ensemble in a single-mode regime. The light is generated in a spontaneous four-wave mixing process in the presence of decoherence effects caused by a large atomic thermal motion. Despite its high sensitivity to any excess noise, a direct observability of heralded QNG light could be achieved due to a combination of a fast resonant excitation, large spectral bandwidth, and a low absorption loss of resonant photons guaranteed by the source geometry., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The quadrupole linear Paul trap is one of the key instruments in building highly stable atomic clocks. However, a frequency reference based on a single trapped ion is limited in stability due to the time needed for the interrogation cycle which cannot be further shortened. A promising strategy is the utilization of multiple trapped ions. The ions of the same kind then repulse each other with the Coulomb force, which is countered by the ponderomotive force of the time depended field in the trap. A few ions form a chain along the axis of a linear Paul trap. Adding more ions (a few tens or hundreds) gives rise to Coulomb crystals. We created an efficient simulation code which calculates the motion of such collections of ions in quasistatic radiofrequency fields of real linear quadrupole traps (including the micromotion). We include a model for laser cooling of the ions. The simulation tool can be used to study the formation and the dynamics of Coulomb crystals under conditions corresponding to various experimental set-ups.

Quantum non-Gaussian mechanical states from inherently nonlinear quantum processes are already required in a range of applications spanning from quantum sensing up to quantum computing with continuous variables. The discrete building blocks of such states are the energy eigenstates - Fock states. Despite the progress in their preparation, the remaining imperfections can still invisibly cause loss of the critical quantum non-Gaussian aspects of the phonon distribution relevant in the applications. We derive the most challenging hierarchy of quantum non-Gaussian criteria for the individual mechanical Fock states and demonstrate its implementation on the characterization of single trapped-ion oscillator states up to 10~phonons. We analyze the depth of quantum non-Gaussian features under mechanical heating and predict their application in quantum sensing. These results uncover that the crucial quantum non-Gaussian features are demanded to reach quantum advantage in the applications.

Laser cooled ions trapped in a linear Paul trap are long-standing ideal candidates for realizing quantum simulation, especially of many-body systems. The properties that contribute to this also provide the opportunity to demonstrate unexpected quantum phenomena in few-body systems. A pair of ions interacting in such traps exchange vibrational quanta through the Coulomb interaction. This linear interaction can be anharmonically modulated by an elementary coupling to the internal two-level structure of one of the ions. Driven by thermal energy in the passively coupled oscillators, which are themselves coupled to the internal ground states of the ions, the nonlinear interaction autonomously and unconditionally generates entanglement between the mechanical modes of the ions. We examine this counter-intuitive thermally induced entanglement for several experimentally feasible model systems, and propose parameter regimes where state of the art trapped ion systems can produce such phenomena. Generation of nonclassical light suitable for interaction with atoms corresponds to a crucial goal pursued across the broad quantum optics community. We present the generation of nonclassical photon pairs using the process of spontaneous four-wave mixing in warm atomic vapor with an unprecedentedly high degree of nonclassical photon correlations. We show how the unique combination of excitation of atoms in the proximity of the vapor cell viewport, single excitation laser beam, double-$\Lambda$ energy level scheme, auxiliary optical pumping, and particular optical filtering setups, allow for the spectral bandwidth of generated nonclassical light fields of up to $560 \pm 20$ MHz and low two-photon noise. We provide a quantitative analysis of particular noise mechanisms which set technological and fundamental limits on the observable photon correlations. The overall technological simplicity of the presented scheme together with the availability of spectrally matched quantum memories implementable with warm atomic vapors promises the feasibility of realization of GHz bandwidth on-demand nonclassical light sources and efficient quantum communication nodes., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

We demonstrate an optical frequency analysis method using the Fourier transform of detection times of fluorescence photons emitted from a single trapped 40Ca+ ion. The response of the detected photon rate to the relative laser frequency deviations is recorded within the slope of a dark resonance formed in the lambda-type energy level scheme corresponding to two optical dipole transitions. This approach enhances the sensitivity to the small frequency deviations and does so with reciprocal dependence on the fluorescence rate. The employed lasers are phase locked to an optical frequency comb, which allows for precise calibration of optical frequency analysis by deterministic modulation of the analyzed laser beam with respect to the reference beam. The attainable high signal-to-noise ratios of up to a MHz range of modulation deviations and up to a hundred kHz modulation frequencies promise the applicability of the presented results in a broad range of optical spectroscopic applications.

The demonstration of optical multipath interference from a large number of quantum emitters is essential for the realization of many paradigmatic experiments in quantum optics. However, such interference remains still unexplored as it crucially depends on the sub-wavelength positioning accuracy and stability of all emitters. We present the observation of controlled interference of light scattered from strings of up to 53~trapped ions. The light scattered from ions localized in a harmonic trapping potential is collected along the ion crystal symmetry axis, which guarantees the spatial indistinguishability and allows for an efficient scaling of the contributing ion number. We achieve the preservation of the coherence of scattered light observable for all the measured string sizes and nearly-optimal enhancement of phase sensitivity. The presented results will enable realization and control of directional photon emission, direct detection of enhanced quadrature squeezing of atomic resonance fluorescence, or optical generation of genuine multi-partite entanglement of atoms.

The generation and manipulation of entanglement between isolated particles has precipitated rapid progress in quantum information processing. Entanglement is also known to play an essential role in the optical properties of atomic ensembles, but fundamental effects in the controlled emission and absorption from small, well-defined numbers of entangled emitters in free space have remained unobserved. Here we present the control of the spontaneous emission rate of a single photon from a pair of distant, entangled atoms into a free-space optical mode. Changing the length of the optical path connecting the atoms modulates the emission rate with a visibility $V = 0.27 \pm 0.03$ determined by the degree of entanglement shared between the atoms, corresponding directly to the concurrence $\mathcal{C_{\rho}}= 0.31 \pm 0.10$ of the prepared state. This scheme, together with population measurements, provides a fully optical determination of the amount of entanglement. The vast majority of physical objects we are dealing with are almost exclusively made of atoms. Due to their discrete level structure, single atoms have proved to be emitters of light which is incompatible with the classical description of electromagnetic waves. We demonstrate this incompatibility for atomic fluorescence when scaling up the size of the source ensemble, which consists of trapped atomic ions, by several orders of magnitude. The presented measurements of nonclassical statistics on light unconditionally emitted from ensembles containing up to more than a thousand ions promise further scalability to much larger emitter numbers. The methodology can be applied to a broad range of experimental platforms focusing on the bare nonclassical character of single isolated emitters.

Quantum nonclassicality is the basic building stone for the vast majority of quantum information applications and methods of its generation are at the forefront of research. One of the obstacles any method needs to clear is the looming presence of decohorence and noise which act against the nonclassicality and often erase it completely. In this paper we show that nonclassical states of a quantum harmonic oscillators initially in thermal equilibrium states can be deterministically created by coupling it to a single two level system. This can be achieved even in the absorption regime in which the two level system is initially in the ground state. The method is resilient to noise and it may actually benefit from it, as witnessed by the systems with higher thermal energy producing more nonclassical states., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Nonclassical quantum effects gradually reach domains of physics of large systems previously considered as purely classical. We derive a hierarchy of operational criteria suitable for a reliable detection of nonclassicality of light from an arbitrarily large ensemble of independent single-photon emitters. We show, that such large ensemble can always emit nonclassical light without any phase reference and under realistic experimental conditions including incoherent background noise. Single atoms or atom-like emitters are the purest source of on-demand single photons, they are intrinsically incapable of multi-photon emission. To demonstrate this degree of purity we have realized a tunable, on-demand source of single photons using a single ion trapped at the common focus of high numerical aperture lenses. Our trapped-ion source produces single-photon pulses at a rate of 200 kHz with g$^2(0) = (1.9 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-3}$, without any background subtraction. The corresponding residual background is accounted for exclusively by detector dark counts. We further characterize the performance of our source by measuring the violation of a non-Gaussian state witness and show that its output corresponds to ideal attenuated single photons. Combined with current efforts to enhance collection efficiency from single emitters, our results suggest that single trapped ions are not only ideal stationary qubits for quantum information processing, but promising sources of light for scalable optical quantum networks., Comment: 7 pages plus one page supplementary material

Trapped ion crystals have proved to be one of the most viable physical implementations of quantum registers and a promising candidate for a scalable realization of quantum networks. The latter will require the development of an efficient interface between trapped ions and photons. We describe two research directions that are currently investigated to realize such photonic quantum interfaces in free space using high numerical aperture optics. The first approach investigates how strong focusing of light onto a single ion can increase the interaction strength to achieve efficient interaction between a photon and the ion. The second approach uses a probabilistic measurement on scattered photons to generate entanglement between two ions that could be used to distribute information in a quantum network. We experimentally demonstrate a programmable quantum gate that applies a sign flip operation to data qubit in an arbitrary basis fully specified by the quantum state of a two-qubit program register. Our linear-optical implementation is inspired by teleportation-based schemes for quantum computing and relies on multiphoton interference and coincidence detection. We confirm the programmability of the gate and its high-fidelity performance by carrying out full quantum process tomography of the resulting operation on data qubit for several different programs., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures
