Search

Non-virialized dark-matter axions may be present in the Milky Way halo in the form of low-velocity-dispersion flows. The Axion Dark Matter eXperiment performed a search for the conversion of these axions into microwave photons using a resonant cavity immersed in a strong, static magnetic field. The spread of photon energy in these measurements was measured at spectral resolutions of the order of 1 Hz and below. If the energy variation were this small, the frequency modulation of any real axion signal due to the orbital and rotational motion of the Earth would become non-negligible. Conservative estimates of the expected signal modulation were made and used as a guide for the search procedure. The photon frequencies covered by this search are 812$-$852 and 858$-$892 MHz, which correspond to an axion mass of 3.36$-$3.52 and 3.55$-$3.69 {\mu}eV. No axion signal was found, and limits were placed on the maximum local density of non-virialized axions of these masses., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

Van der Waals assembly of two-dimensional (2D) crystals continue attract intense interest due to the prospect of designing novel materials with on-demand properties. One of the unique features of this technology is the possibility of trapping molecules or compounds between 2D crystals. The trapped molecules are predicted to experience pressures as high as 1 GPa. Here we report measurements of this interfacial pressure by capturing pressure-sensitive molecules and studying their structural and conformational changes. Pressures of 1.2 +/- 0.3 GPa are found using Raman spectrometry for molecular layers of one nanometer in thickness. We further show that this pressure can induce chemical reactions and several trapped salts or compounds are found to react with water at room temperature, leading to 2D crystals of the corresponding oxides. This pressure and its effect should be taken into account in studies of van der Waals heterostructures and can also be exploited to modify materials confined at the atomic interfaces.

UHV dynamic force and energy dissipation spectroscopy in non-contact atomic force microscopy were used to probe specific interactions with composite systems formed by encapsulating inorganic compounds inside single-walled carbon nanotubes. It is found that forces due to nano-scale van der Waals interaction can be made to decrease by combining an Ag core and a carbon nanotube shell in the Ag@SWNT system. This specific behaviour was attributed to a significantly different effective dielectric function compared to the individual constituents, evaluated using a simple core-shell optical model. Energy dissipation measurements showed that by filling dissipation increases, explained here by softening of C-C bonds resulting in a more deformable nanotube cage. Thus, filled and unfilled nanotubes can be discriminated based on force and dissipation measurements. These findings have two different implications for potential applications: tuning the effective optical properties and tuning the interaction force for molecular absorption by appropriately choosing the filling with respect to the nanotube., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

We present results for the B_s meson decay constant f_{B_s} from simulations at three lattice spacings in the range a^{-1}=1.1 to 2.6 GeV using NRQCD heavy quarks and clover light quarks in the quenched approximation. We study scaling of this quantity and check the consistency between mesons decaying from rest and from a state with nonzero spatial momentum. The cancellation of power law contributions that arise in the NRQCD formulation of heavy-light currents is discussed. On the coarsest lattice the D_s meson decay constant f_{D_s} is calculated. Our best values for the decay constants are given by f_{B_s} = 187(4)(4)(11)(2)(7)(6) MeV and f_{D_s} = 223(6)(31)(38)(23)(9)(^{+3}_{-1}) MeV., Comment: 29 pages with 7 postscript figures, improved error analysis, version to appear in Physical Review D

We give results for the $B$ and the $D$ meson spectrum using NRQCD on the lattice in the quenched approximation. The masses of radially and orbitally excited states are calculated as well as $S$-wave hyperfine and $P$-wave fine structure. Radially excited $P$-states are observed for the first time. Radial and orbital excitation energies match well to experiment, as does the strange-non-strange $S$-wave splitting. We compare the light and heavy quark mass dependence of various splittings to experiment. Our $B$-results cover a range in lattice spacings of more than a factor of two. Our $D$-results are from a single lattice spacing and we compare them to numbers in the literature from finer lattices using other methods. We present lattice results for the spectrum of mesons containing one heavy quark and of baryons containing one or two heavy quarks. The calculation is done in the quenched approximation using the NRQCD formalism for the heavy quark. We analyze the dependence of the mass splittings on both the heavy and the light quark masses. Meson P-state fine structure and baryon hyperfine splittings are resolved for the first time. We fix the b quark mass using both M_B and M_{\Lambda_b}, and our best estimate is m_b^\MSbar(m_b^\MSbar) = 4.35(10)({}^{-3}_{+2})(10) GeV. We present results for the QCD matrix elements involved in semi-leptonic decays of B-mesons into pseudo scalar heavy light states. The application of NRQCD heavy quarks allows for quark masses around the physical b-quark. We investigate the dependence of the form factors on the external momenta and looked at the mass dependence at zero recoil. We propose a Monte Carlo algorithm to promote Kennedy and Kuti's linear accept/reject algorithm which accommodates unbiased stochastic estimates of the probability to an exact one. This is achieved by adopting the Metropolis accept/reject steps for both the dynamical and noise configurations. We test it on the five state model and obtain desirable results even for the case with large noise. We present comprehensive results for the spectrum and decay constants of hadrons containing a single b quark. The heavy quark is simulated using an $O(1/M)$ NRQCD action and the light quark using the $O(a)$ tadpole-improved clover action on gauge configurations containing two degenerate flavours of sea quarks at $\beta^{n_f=2}=5.6$ provided by the HEMCGC collaboration. We present detailed results for the lower lying $S$ and $P$ wave $B$ meson states and the $\Lambda_b$ baryon. We find broad agreement with experiment. In addition, we present results for the pseudoscalar and, for the first time, the vector decay constants fully consistent to $O(\alpha/M): f_B = 186(5)(stat)(19)(pert)(9)(disc)(13)(NRQCD)(+50)(a^{-1})MeV, f_B^* = 181(6) (stat)(18)(pert)(9)(disc)(13)(NRQCD)(+55)(a^{-1})MeV$ and $f_{B_s}/f_B = 1.14(2)(stat)(-2)(\kappa_s)$. We present an investigation of sea quark effects in the $B$ spectrum and decay constants. We compare our results with those from similar quenched simulations at $\beta^{n_f=0}=6.0$. For the spectrum, the quenched results reproduce the experimental spectrum well and there is no significant difference between the quenched and $n_f=2$ results. For the decay constants, our results suggest that sea quark effects may be large. We present new values for the $\bar{MS}$ masses of $b$ and $c$ quarks based on lattice NRQCD simulations of the $\Upsilon (b\bar{b})$ and $\psi (c\bar{c})$ systems. These include three measurements of the $b$ mass based on quenched simulations with lattice spacings ranging from 0.05fm to 0.15fm, which we find to be largely independent of lattice spacing. In addition, we find a consistent value from an unquenched simulation at 0.08fm., Comment: LATTICE98(heavyqk)

Preliminary results from an extensive lattice calculation of the B, B_c, and \Upsilon spectrum at quenched \beta = 6.0 are presented. A valence QCD theory is developed to study the valence quark properties of hadrons. To keep only the valence degrees of freedom, the pair creation through the Z graphs is deleted in the connected insertions; whereas, the sea quarks are eliminated in the disconnected insertions. This is achieved with a new ``valence QCD'' lagrangian where the action in the time direction is modified so that the particle and antiparticle decouple. The theory has the vector and axial $U(2N_F)$ symmetry in the particle-antiparticle space. Through lattice simulation, it appears that this is dynamically broken down to $U_q(N_F) \times U_{\bar{q}}(N_F)$. Furthermore, the lattice simulation reveals spin degeneracy in the hadron masses and SU(6) relations in the ratios of $F_A/D_A, F_S/D_S$, and $\mu^n/\mu^p$. This leads to an approximate $U_q(2N_F) \times U_{\bar{q}}(2N_F)$ symmetry which is the basis for the valence quark model. We find that the masses of N, $\Delta, \rho, \pi, a_1$, and $a_0$ all drop precipitously compared to their counterparts in the quenched QCD calculation. This is interpreted as due to the disapperance of the `constituent' quark mass which is dynamically generated through tadpole diagrams. Form the near degeneracy between N and $\Delta$ for the quark masses we have studied (ranging from one to four times the strange mass), we conclude that the origin of the hyper-fine splitting in the baryon is largely attibuted to the Goldstone boson exchanges between the quarks. We present results for the spectrum of b-bbar bound states in the quenched approximation for three different values of the lattice spacing. Results for spin-independent splittings are shown to have good scaling behaviour; spin-dependent splittings are more sensitive to discretisation effects. We present results for the spectrum of b-bbar bound states in the quenched approximation for three different values of the lattice spacing, in the range 0.05fm to 0.15fm. We find our results for spin-independent splittings in physical units to be independent of the lattice spacing, indicating the absence of systematic errors from discretisation effects. Spin-dependent splittings are more sensitive to the lattice spacing and higher order corrections to the action; we discuss the size of these effects and what can be done to arrive at a physical result., Comment: 35 pages, 7 figures. We present quenched results for B meson decay constants using NRQCD b quarks and O(a) tadpole improved clover light quarks. For the first time, one-loop matching factors between lattice and continuum currents are incorporated through O(\alpha/M) taking operator mixing fully into account. This includes an important O(\alpha a) discretization correction to the heavy-light axial vector current. We find f_B = 0.147(11)(^{+8}_{-12})(9)(6) MeV and f_{B_s}/f_B = 1.20(4)(^{+4}_{-0}). We present results on the spectrum of B and D mesons including radial excitations and discuss the pseudoscalar decay constant. The results are obtained at beta=5.7 in the quenched approximation using NRQCD for the heavy quark. We present a quenched lattice calculation of heavy-light meson decay constants, using non-relativistic (NRQCD) heavy quarks in the mass region of the $b$ quark and heavier, and clover-improved light quarks. The NRQCD Hamiltonian and the heavy-light current include the corrections at first order in the expansion in the inverse heavy quark mass. We study the dependence of the decay constants on the heavy meson mass $M$, for light quarks with the tree level ($c_{SW}$ = 1), as well as the tadpole improved clover coefficient. We compare decay constants from NRQCD with results from clover ($c_{SW}=1$) heavy quarks. Having calculated the current renormalisation constant $Z_A$ in one-loop perturbation theory, we demonstrate how the heavy mass dependence of the pseudoscalar decay constants changes after renormalisation. For the first time, we quote a result for $f_B$ from NRQCD including the full one-loop matching factors at $O(\alpha/M)$., Comment: 45 pages, latex, 24 postscript figures

We present a new determination of the strong coupling constant from lattice QCD simulations. We use four different short-distance quantities to obtain the coupling, three different (infrared) meson splittings to tune the simulation parameters, and a wide range of lattice spacings, quark masses, and lattice volumes to test for systematic errors. Our final result consists of ten different determinations of $\alpha^{(3)}_{P}(8.2 GeV)$, which agree well with each other and with our previous results. The most accurate of these, when evolved perturbatively to the $Z^0$ mass, gives $\alpha^{(5)}_{\msbar}(M_Z) = .1174(24)$. We present results for the spectrum and decay constants of B mesons from NRQCD using dynamical configurations at $\beta=5.6$ with two flavours of staggered fermions. We present a lattice investigation of the heavy-light meson decay constants using Wilson light quarks and NRQCD heavy quarks, partially including the effects of dynamical sea quarks. We calculate the pseudoscalar and vector decay constants over a wide range in heavy quark mass and are able to perform a detailed analysis of heavy quark symmetry. We find consistency between the extrapolation of the NRQCD results and the static case, as expected. We find the slope of the decay constants with $1/M$ is significantly larger than naive expectations and the results of previous lattice calculations. For the first time we extract the non-perturbative coefficients of the slope arising from the $O(1/M)$ heavy quark interactions separately and show the kinetic energy of the heavy quark is dominant and responsible for the large slope. In addition, we find that significant systematic errors remain in the decay constant extracted around the $B$ meson mass due to truncating the NRQCD series at $O(1/M)$. We estimate the higher order contributions to $f_B$ are approximately $20\%$; roughly the same size as the systematic errors introduced by using the Wilson action for light quarks., Comment: 30 pages, Latex, 14 postscript figures

We present a lattice investigation, partially including the effects of dynamical quarks, of the heavy-light mesons using NRQCD for the heavy quark and the Wilson action for the light quark. We performed an extensive calculation of the spectrum employing a multi-state, multi-exponential fitting analysis which enabled us to extract the $2S{-}1S$ splitting as well as the $^1P_1{-}\bar{S}$ and hyperfine splittings. The Wilson action introduces a large systematic error into the calculation, and within this uncertainty we obtain agreement with experiment. We performed a comprehensive calculation of the heavy-light meson mass, investigating three methods and their range of validity. The agreement found between these methods confirms that Lorentz invariance can be restored at this order in NRQCD by a constant shift to all masses. We calculated spectroscopic quantities over a wide range in heavy quark mass and were able to perform a detailed investigation of heavy quark symmetry around the $b$ quark mass. In particular, we extracted the nonperturbative coefficients of terms in the heavy quark expansion of the meson binding energy. We present first results for $B_c$ spectroscopy using Lattice Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD). For the NRQCD action the leading order spin-dependent and next to leading order spin-independent interactions have been included with tadpole-improved coefficients. We use multi-exponential fits to multiple correlation functions to extract ground and excited $S$ states and give accurate values for the $S$ state hyperfine splitting and the P state ($B^{**}_c$) fine structure, including the effects of $^1P_1/^3P_1$ mixing., Comment: 12 pages uuencoded latex file + 1 postscript figure

We present a lattice investigation of heavy-light mesons in the quenched approximation, using non-relativistic QCD for the heavy quark and a clover improved Wilson formulation for the light quark. A comprehensive calculation of the heavy-light spectrum has been performed for various heavy quark masses around the $b$. Our results for the $B_s-B_d$ splitting agree well with the experimental value. We find the $\Lambda_b-B$ splitting to be compatible with experiment, albeit with large error bars. Our $B^*-B$ splitting is slightly low, which could be explained as an effect of quenching. For the first time, we are able to estimate the mass of $P$ states at the $B$ and compare them with experiment., Comment: 24 pages, latex, 10 figures in uuencoded compressed postscript

We update our results for the heavy-heavy spectrum at $\beta$ = 5.7, using NRQCD. This includes a scaling comparison with the $\Upsilon$ spectrum at $\beta$ = 6.0 and first lattice predictions for the $B_c$ spectrum., Comment: 4 pages of uuencoded latex. Uses espcrc2.sty. Contribution to LAT95
