Abstract

Physical properties of terrains encountered by the Curiosity rover during the rst 360 sols of operations have been inferred from analysis of the scour zones produced by Sky Crane Landing System engine plumes, wheel touch down dynamics, pits produced by Chemical Camera (ChemCam) laser shots, rover wheel traverses over rocks, the extent of sinkage into soils, and the magnitude and sign of rover-based slippage during drives. Results have been integrated with morphologic, mineralogic, and thermophysical properties derived from orbital data, and Curiosity-based measurements, to understand the nature and origin of physical properties of traversed terrains. The hummocky plains (HP) landing site and traverse locations consist ofmoderately to well-consolidated bedrock of alluvial origin variably covered by slightly cohesive, hard-packedbasaltic sand and dust, with both embedded and surface-strewn rock clasts. Rock clasts have been addedthrough local bedrock weathering and impact ejecta emplacement and form a pavement-like surface in whichonly small clasts (5 to 10 cm wide) have been pressed into the soil during wheel passages. The beddedfractured (BF) unit, site of Curiositys rst drilling activity, exposes several alluvial-lacustrine bedrock unitswith little to no soil cover and varying degrees of lithication. Small wheel sinkage values (1 cm) for both HPand BF surfaces demonstrate that compaction resistance countering driven-wheel thrust has been minimaland that rover slippage while traversing across horizontal surfaces or going uphill, and skid going downhill,have been dominated by terrain tilts and wheel-surface material shear modulus values.

Abstract

Going to Mars The Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft containing the Curiosity rover, was launched from Earth in November 2011 and arrived at Gale crater on Mars in August 2012. Zeitlin et al. (p. 1080 ) report measurements of the energetic particle radiation environment inside the spacecraft during its cruise to Mars, confirming the hazard likely to be posed by this radiation to astronauts on a future potential trip to Mars. Williams et al. (p. 1068 , see the Perspective by Jerolmack ) report the detection of sedimentary conglomerates (pebbles mixed with sand and turned to rock) at Gale crater. The rounding of the rocks suggests abrasion of the pebbles as they were transported by flowing water several kilometers or more from their source.

Abstract

Mars' Atmosphere from Curiosity The Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument on the Curiosity rover that landed on Mars in August last year is designed to study the chemical and isotopic composition of the martian atmosphere. Mahaffy et al. (p. 263 ) present volume-mixing ratios of Mars' five major atmospheric constituents (CO 2 , Ar, N 2 , O 2 , and CO) and isotope measurements of 40 Ar/ 36 Ar and C and O in CO 2 , based on data from one of SAM's instruments, obtained between 31 August and 21 November 2012. Webster et al. (p. 260 ) used data from another of SAM's instruments obtained around the same period to determine isotope ratios of H, C, and O in atmospheric CO 2 and H 2 O. Agreement between the isotopic ratios measured by SAM with those of martian meteorites, measured in laboratories on Earth, confirms the origin of these meteorites and implies that the current atmospheric reservoirs of CO 2 and H 2 O were largely established after the period of early atmospheric loss some 4 billion years ago.

Abstract

International audience; "Jake_M," the first rock analyzed by the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer instrument on the Curiosity rover, differs substantially in chemical composition from other known martian igneous rocks: It is alkaline (>15% normative nepheline) and relatively fractionated. Jake_M is compositionally similar to terrestrial mugearites, a rock type typically found at ocean islands and continental rifts. By analogy with these comparable terrestrial rocks, Jake_M could have been produced by extensive fractional crystallization of a primary alkaline or transitional magma at elevated pressure, with or without elevated water contents. The discovery of Jake_M suggests that alkaline magmas may be more abundant on Mars than on Earth and that Curiosity could encounter even more fractionated alkaline rocks (for example, phonolites and trachytes).

Abstract

Samples from the Rocknest aeolian deposit were heated to ~835°C under helium flow and evolved gases analyzed by Curiosity’s Sample Analysis at Mars instrument suite. H 2 O, SO 2 , CO 2 , and O 2 were the major gases released. Water abundance (1.5 to 3 weight percent) and release temperature suggest that H 2 O is bound within an amorphous component of the sample. Decomposition of fine-grained Fe or Mg carbonate is the likely source of much of the evolved CO 2 . Evolved O 2 is coincident with the release of Cl, suggesting that oxygen is produced from thermal decomposition of an oxychloride compound. Elevated δD values are consistent with recent atmospheric exchange. Carbon isotopes indicate multiple carbon sources in the fines. Several simple organic compounds were detected, but they are not definitively martian in origin.

Analysis of the soil with the Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) x-ray diffraction (XRD) instrument revealed plagioclase (~An57), forsteritic olivine (~Fo62), augite, and pigeonite, with minor K-feldspar, magnetite, quartz, anhydrite, hematite, and ilmenite. The minor phases are present at, or near, detection limits. The soil also contains 27 ± 14 weight percent x-ray amorphous material, likely containing multiple Fe 3+ - and volatile-bearing phases, including possibly a substance resembling hisingerite. The crystalline component is similar to the normative mineralogy of certain basaltic rocks from Gusev crater on Mars and of martian basaltic meteorites. The amorphous component is similar to that found on Earth in places such as soils on the Mauna Kea volcano, Hawaii.

30. Soil Climate Monitoring Project in the Ross Island Region of Antarctica

Abstract

Relatively little is known about soil climate in Antarctica. The purpose of our research was to describe a cooperative soil climate monitoring project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys and other ice-free areas of the Ross Island Region of Antarctica. There are seven soil climate stations that monitor air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, and soil moisture and temperature in which hourly measurements are recorded. The initial project objective, in 1999, was to determine the impact of fuel spills on the biological, chemical, and physical properties of Antarctic soils, which was lead by Landcare Research of New Zealand. When the initial project ended in 2002, the control sites were continued as long-term monitoring stations. At each site, soils were described and sampled for characterization analyses. The soils are coarse textured with significant amounts and sizes of coarse fragments throughout the profile with little soil development (or horizonation). Mean annual air temperatures (MAAT) range from -17 to -24°C. The mean annual soil temperatures (MAST) range from -14.6 to -23.5°C. The average maximum thaw depth ranged from 5.5 cm to more than 85 cm. Average active layer water contents are low and tend to increase with depth. The data, soil descriptions, soil characterization data, and station records from this project are available through the National Soil Survey Center's web page (http://soils.usda.gov/survey/scan/; verified 22 June 2009). As long as the project continues, annual maintenance and data retrieval are necessary. The importance of this project is that it provides NRCS an opportunity to gather data in an area sensitive to global climate change.

31. Experimental Determination of the Volumetric Properties of NaCl Solutions to 253 K

Abstract

The densities of 0.00858−6.0141 mol·kg-1 NaCl solutions were determined between 253 and 293 K with a capillary-tube densitometer. Among the data were the first density determinations of supercooled NaCl solutions. The greatest inaccuracy of the measured densities for the entire data set was 200 μg·cm-3. Our densities were close to those calculated with the equation of state for the NaCl−H2O system of Archer. Apparent molal volumes of NaCl(aq) were calculated and fitted to the Pitzer equations, yielding estimated apparent molal volumes at infinite dilution and Pitzer volumetric parameters to 258 K. The values of these parameters from 273 to 298 K were in good agreement with the data of Rogers and Pitzer. From our experimental data we were able to calculate densities of very dilute to saturated sodium chloride solutions at temperatures down to 258 K.

32. Flanged Acrylic Plastic Hemispherical Shells for Undersea Systems—Part 2: Static and Cyclic Fatigue Life Under Hydrostatic Loading

Abstract

Over 25 acrylic plastic windows with t/Ri = 0.364 in the shape of hemispherical domes with equatorial flanges have been thermoformed from flat sheets and tested under short term, long term, and cyclic pressure loading at 65–75°F ambient temperature. Two kinds of flanges with O-ring grooves on the bearing surfaces were experimented with: Type 1, a flat lip with a rounded heel and instep, and Type II, a conical lip with a rounded heel. The 14,500 psi short term critical pressure of hemispherical windows with t/Ri = 0.364 was found to be independent of the equatorial flange configuration. Both the static and cyclic fatigue lives of the windows were also found to be independent of equatorial flange configuration. In either case, the maximum acceptable working pressure for 65–75°F temperature range was found to be 1000 psi. Only by elimination of the O-ring groove in the bearing surface of the window flange and the use of a thin neoprene bearing gasket between the arylic flange and the steel is it possible to extend the working pressure to 2000 psi for 65–75°F temperature range. Operating the flanged windows at pressures in excess of the safe working pressures shown above will generate fatigue cracks in the bearing surface of the flange in less than 1000 pressure cycles; at 5000 psi pressure the cyclic fatigue life decreases to less than 100 cycles.

33. Spherical Shell Sector Acrylic Plastic Windows with 12,000 ft Operational Depth for Submersible Alvin

Abstract

It has been found that the 90-deg plane conical frustum windows with t/Di = 0.7 ratio in ALVIN submersible can be replaced with 90-deg t/Di = 1 spherical shell sector windows without any modification of window seat flanges. The 90-deg spherical shell sector windows with t/Di = 1.0 possess not only a higher short term critical pressure but also develop more uniform stress distribution during a typical dive to 12,000 ft than the t/Di = 0.7 acrylic conical frustum windows that they replace. The 90-deg t/Di = 1.0 spherical shell sector windows (1) withstood, without catastrophic failure, 100 hr sustained loading to 20,000 psi, (2) 33 pressure cycles of 7-hr duration to 13,500 ft depth without any signs of fatigue, and (3) experienced less than 15,000 μin. strain during a simulated typical prooftest dive to 13,500 ft depth. The 90-deg t/Di = 1 spherical shell sector window presents a 50 percent larger view in water than a 90-deg t/Di = 0.7 conical frustum window that it replaces. This permits the observer inside the submersible to cover visually more ocean bottom during a single pass along the bottom and thus decreases the cost of a typical bottom search mission for a submersible.

Abstract

Accumulated solids associated with the operation of aerated and facultative lagoons in cold climates were investigated to determine (1) the rate and extent of solids accumulation, (2) the characteristics of the accumulated solids, (3) the potential for in situ stabilization of the accumulated solids, and (4) the effect of lime treatment upon the pathogenic population and subsequent solids drying on sand and soil beds. Accumulated sludges from the Logan and Corinne, Utah, facultative lagoons and the Palmer and Galena, Alaska, partial-mix-aerated lagoons were studied. The rates of accumulation, determined by in situ measurement of the sludge layer in each lagoon, were found to vary with lagoon type and specific operational and environmental conditions. The solids characteristics, determined for samples upon collection and for samples in cold storage over time, were found to be generally comparable to those of conventional primary sludges. Sludge samples were stored for an extended period at temperatures that model winter conditions at the lagoon bottom and were periodically tested to determine if changes were occurring in basic sludge characteristics. With the exception of bacterial concentration reduction no significant changes were observed, indicating that in situ stabilization of the sludge is probably not occurring in the actual lagoons under low temperature conditions. Aerobic and anaerobic digestion studies were also performed with these sludge samples and are reported elsewhere.

Abstract

The feasibility of a slow-infiltration land treatment system as an alternative to advanced waste treatment of wastewater was studied using six outdoor test cells. Wastewater was applied to forage grasses by spray irrigation. Parameters studied were wastewater application rate, effect of pretreatment and soil type and seasonal effects on the treatment system. Activated sludge pretreatment of the applied wastewater did not improve the overall quality of the product water from this slow-infiltration system. The uptake of nutrients by forage grasses accounted for significant removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from applied wastewater during the growing season. Other renovative mechanisms, namely nitrification/denitrification of applied nitrogen and phosphorus immobilization and fixation by the soils may have accounted for further renovation of the applied effluents.

Abstract

Lysimeters constructed of polyacrylic and fitted with either a porous nylon membrane or a porous ceramic cup were tested for their adsorption characteristics with respect to Pb, Cr, Cu, As, Cd, Co, Mn, Ni, and Zn. Laboratory tests were conducted at pH 4, 5, and 6 using metalconcentrations that are representative of natural soil solutions. The ceramic lysimeters significantly lowered the concentrations of Cd, Co, Mn, Ni, and Zn, and almost completely removed Pb, Cr, Cu, and As from solution. The nylon lysimeters had virtually no effect on metal concentrations at pH 4 to 5, and only slightly decreased the concentrations of As, Cr, Cu, and Pb at pH 6. Based on field experience, an optimized design of the nylon lysimeter is presented using double nylon membranes to improve the mechanical resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

48. Physical Performance and Activity in Older Prostate Cancer Survivors in Comparison with Population-based Matched Controls.

Abstract

Background and Objective: Whether radical prostate cancer treatment affects long-term physical performance and physical activity in older men is not known. We aimed to compare physical performance and self-reported physical activity between relapse-free older prostate cancer survivors and population-based controls., Methods: A single-centre, cross-sectional study including 109 men aged ≥70 yr receiving robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (61.5%) or external beam radiotherapy (38.5%) between 2014 and 2018 was conducted. Population-based matched (age, gender, and education) controls ( n  = 327) were drawn from the Trøndelag Health Study. The primary (the Short Physical Performance Battery [SPPB] summary score) and secondary (gait speed, grip strength, one-legged balance, and the self-reported Physical Activity Index) outcomes were compared between survivors and controls by adjusted linear mixed models., Key Findings and Limitations: The SPPB score, gait speed, and Physical Activity Index did not differ between survivors (mean age 78.3 yr, mean time since treatment 52.9 mo) and controls (mean age 78.2 yr). Survivors had slightly poorer grip strength (regression coefficient [RC] -5.81, p  < 0.001, 95% confidence interval [CI] -7.46; -4.17) and one-legged balance (RC -4.36, p  < 0.001, 95% CI -6.72; -2.00; adjusted models), but the clinical significance is uncertain. Small sample size and potential selection of the fittest survivors are limitations that may reduce the generalisability of our findings., Conclusions and Clinical Implications: 3 to 8 yr after radical prostate cancer treatment, older men's overall physical performance and physical activity level were comparable with those of matched controls. This suggests that the treatment had little impact on functional status., Patient Summary: In this study, we investigated physical function in older men several years after they had undergone curatively intended treatment for prostate cancer in comparison with men in a general population of the same age and education. We found that physical function was similar, except slightly poorer grip strength and balance on one leg in men treated for prostate cancer. Purpose: Information about outcomes of particular relevance to older prostate cancer survivors is limited. This study aimed to compare health, activities of daily living (ADL), and use of health care services between survivors and matched controls., Methods: A single-centre study on men treated for prostate cancer with curative intent at the age ≥ 70 years 2 to 7 years earlier. Controls matched on age and education were drawn (1:3) from the Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT) in Norway. Self-reported general health, independence in ADL and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), hospital admissions and emergency room visits were compared by estimating non-adjusted and adjusted (age, education, comorbidity, cohabitant status and pack years of smoking) regression models., Results: The majority of both survivors (N = 233) and controls (N = 699) reported good (58.7% vs. 62.7%) or very good (11.2% vs. 6.8%) health and independence in ADL (95.6% vs. 96.3%) and IADL (82.7% vs. 81.9%). Hospital admission was reported by 17.3% vs. 18.2% and emergency room visit by 23.6% vs. 26.7%. Regression models showed no significant differences between survivors and controls., Conclusions: Older prostate cancer survivors reported similar health, independence in ADL and use of emergency room and hospital admissions as matched controls., Implications for Cancer Survivors: This study shows that survivors after curatively intended treatment of prostate cancer have as good health as matched controls, indicating that many patients tolerate such treatment well despite being of old age and that current practice for selection of patients offered such treatment is appropriate., (© 2024. Abstract

Objective: We aimed to investigate the associations between age at radical prostate cancer treatment and long-term global quality of life (QoL), physical function (PF), and treatment-related side effects., Material and Methods: This single-center, cross-sectional study included men treated for localized prostate cancer with robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) or external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) in 2014-2018. Global QoL and PF were assessed by the European Organisation of Research and Treatment in Cancer Quality of life Questionnaire-C30 (QLQ-C30), side effects by the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite (EPIC-26). Adjusted linear regression models were estimated to assess associations between age (continuous variable) at treatment and outcomes. QLQ-C30 scores were compared to normative data after dividing the cohort in two groups, <70 years and ≥70 years at treatment., Results: Of 654 men included, 516 (79%) had undergone RARP, and 138 (21%) had undergone EBRT combined with androgen deprivation therapy for 93%. Mean time since treatment was 57 months. Median age at treatment was 68 (min-max 44-84) years. We found no statistically significant independent association between age at treatment and global QoL, PF or side effects, except for sexual function (regression coefficient [RC] -0.77; p < 0.001) and hormonal/vitality (RC 0.30; p = 0.006) function. Mean QLQ-C30 scores were slightly poorer than age-adjusted normative scores, for men <70 years (n = 411) as well as for men ≥70 years (n = 243) at treatment, but the differences were not beyond clinical significance., Conclusions: In this cohort of prostate cancer survivors, age at treatment had little impact on long-term QoL and function. Due to the cross-sectional design, short term impact or variation over time cannot be ruled out.
